Chapter 28

Kagome felt the tension between her and InuYasha growing as the taxi neared Sango's. The night before she had agreed to start staying with him. However now she was starting to wonder if it was a good idea. She had wanted to speak with him ever since they left the office, but from how he was acting she chose not to say anything. Kagome would glance over at him from time to time and found he seemed deep in thought about something. 'What on earth happened after we left my office? And how did his shirt get burnt?' Kagome thought, as she looked out her window. She decided to do what came natural to her, and slowly she let her hand move close to his. And without looking placed her hand over his.

It took InuYasha a few minutes to realize Kagome was resting her hand on his. His thoughts were now on her and what might happen. "Damn, why did I let myself fall in love with her. Sesshomaru used her before to get to me and I'm sure he'll do it again. Why is this all happening now, I was starting to enjoy this place. Damn Sesshomaru, damn sword, but mostly I blame my damn father for all of this. Why did I have to be the son of Inu youkai?' All these thoughts only angered him more, he could feel his own youkai blood stirring with every thought. It was also during his time of thinking, InuYasha failed to notice they had arrived at Sango's place. When Kagome's hand slipped off of his, InuYasha grabbed her hand and pulled her tight against him. "I'm sorry Kagome for all of this."

Kagome was a bit surprised by InuYasha's action, still with a smile she returned his embrace. Though she wasn't sure how to respond to his words. 'What was he sorry for?' She wondered, as they separated. Still confused, Kagome told him she'd be right back with a few things and he could wait here. However he had to get away and make sure she stayed safe too.

With a heavy sigh, InuYasha got out of the taxi and moved to the driver's side door. With the window rolled down InuYasha paid the driver and told him to leave. Then walked away from Sango's place, feeling lower than he had ever felt before. "I'm sorry Kagome." InuYasha said to himself, as he looked back one last time. "it's better you stay with Sango. As much as I want to stay and protect you I know it's not possible. Sesshomaru isn't one to mess with and if you stay close to me he'll use you to get to me like he did before. I can't let that happen to you, but I will make sure Kouga and Kikyo stay away from you too." InuYasha knew he needed to find the Tessaiga and the old sword smith Tōtōsai. And as luck would have it, he wouldn't have to look for long.

InuYasha was only four blocks away from his place when he turned the corner and found the old man arguing with some strange woman. "Keh, figures. He's like all these old men around here, they always have to argue with a woman and it's probably over a cup of coffee being too hot or cold." Once he was close enough InuYasha gave a smartass shout to Tōtōsai. "Well it's about time I found you old man, I swear I don't know how you escape the old age home so often."

Both the woman and Tōtōsai looked towards InuYasha with a confused look. "What the hell are you talking about you poor excuse for a hanyou." Now it was InuYasha who was confused. Why would he let it out in the open with this woman close that he was a hanyou. "Oh don't look so surprised that I said that out loud. If you'd use your damn nose, you'd know she is a hanyou as well." With a bow Tōtōsai left the said woman and moved InuYasha to a less crowded area. "It's about time you returned. I've been holding onto this for awhile now." From inside his jacket he pulled a medium sized dagger. InuYasha's eyes widen when he realized it was actually the Tessiaga.

"How is it that the sword isn't well...a huge sword like before?" It was when InuYasha took the sword in his hand that it came to life and morphed into its true self. "What the hell?! How is it that by your hand, it's the size of a dagger? And now it's huge again, what kind of old geezer magic is this?" It was becoming more clear to Tōtōsai that he was going to have a lot of work to do with getting InuYasha to understand the Tessaiga's true powers. InuYasha needed to realize this sword was connected to him in more ways than one. "Spill old man tell me how to use this sword!"

Shaking his head incomplete disbelief of how this loud mouthed, overly rude and very disrespectful hanyou brat was the son of the great Toga. It always made Tōtōsai's head spin when he thought about it. "I think for you to truly understand this sword and it's power, plus the connection you have with it is for me to tell you the story of your father." Hearing mention of his father made InuYasha's stomach turn, he hated his father with a passion. "You claim you hate your father, but know nothing of him or your past. I feel you should understand that he loved you dearly and died protecting you."

InuYasha didn't want to listen and moved to leave, when the Tessaiga decided it was time to make its owner listen.

"What the hell?" InuYasha cursed trying to move the now heavy sword. The old man just laughed and began to tell the story of InuYasha's father and the past the young hanyou needed to hear to understand the fight that was fast approaching the western lands.
