Chapter 29
(Backstory before InuYasha was born)
Feudal Japan, an era of great mystery and great hardship. Like so many other countries that were starting to develop, these times were no different for Japan. Wars, famine, sickness and above all death played out here at very high numbers. And not just humans lived in this era but youkai or demons, as well. It was always believed however, that ALL youkai were considered evil and only desired the death of humans. Monks and priestesses would train in the art of killing these monsters in hopes of destroying the youkai species. There were a few humans that saw past this and believed that not all youkai were evil. And in truth even grew to love and mate with these youkai. As time progressed half youkai or hanyou's had been conceived and born into these troubled times. Even a princess fell under this very spell and fell in love with a very powerful youkai. And not just any youkai, the great Inu No Taisho, Toga. He was known to all youkai as the lord of the western lands. Many youkai had challenged him for this title and all had failed.
It was on a cold winter's night that the young princess Izayoi saw him. As she sat in her cold chambers, brushing out her long black hair. As she gazed up at the moon and stars outside her balcony. Her eyes were captivated by his god like appearance as he stood on the edge of a distance cliff. He was more than handsome and his kimono and armor were surely that of royalty. His kimono was white like purity as well as a design in light blue that calmed those who chose to admire its beauty and when he somehow noticed her. He too felt a pull in him like never before. Even from a great distance his eyes could tell she was his goddess. However it would be years from that night till they would meet again. His young heart was only in search of power, and with that he denied his true feelings. And upon his royal youkai heritage mated a full female daiyōkai and bared a son with her. However when he saw the human princess once more, his heart started to fall in love with her.
It was during the first days of spring not far from her royal castle, and as the now older princess picked flowers for her mother's grave. He saw her and in all her beauty, he was careful not to disturb her work in the small field of wildflowers. So Inu Taisho stood at the edge and watched. As he admired her he leaned down he picked up a pink flower and brought it to his nose and inhaled deeply. 'It matches her scent perfectly as well as her beauty.' He thought, before releasing the flower. Toga watched as the wind carried the flower and carefully placed it into her basket. He watched as she noticed the beautiful pink flower land and in that moment glanced up at him. Toga smiled and bowed before walking towards her, to his surprise she did not move and only smelled the flower. "Beautiful day princess." It surprised her that he knew of her ranking in the castle. Still she only smiled up at him as she now took hold of his offered hand to stand. "You are a beauty like none I've ever seen, please allow me to induce myself. My name is Toga, I'm also known as Inu No Taisho. I am the new lord of the western lands, by demon law. May I ask your name, my dearest princess?"
With a few blinks of her eyelashes she replied. "My name is Izayoi daughter of King Yuuto, it is very nice to meet you Toga." As she stood he admired her flowing dark hair and sparkling brown eyes. While she noticed his golden eyes and instantly found herself captivated by them. Neither spoke as they simply admired each other's different features. However like all great moments this too came to a bitter end, a distant calling of the princess's name ended the magical moment. "I am sorry, but I must go and you as well. The castle guards will surely kill a daiyōkai such as you...though I would like to see you again." Princess Izayoi said, as gracefully pick up her flower basket and walked away, but there was a moment's hesitation before she vanished from his view.
The absence only lasted a few days between Izayoi and Toga and soon they met everyday in the same field of wildflowers. Days turned into weeks and soon months, during this time more than love had blossomed between them. And a night of pure passion had transpired, and with it a child was conceived. Upon learning of this Toga focused only on Izayoi leaving the female daiyōkai and his first son this caused great problems among his royal standings in the youkai lands. Still his joining with Izayoi and love was never known to the humans in their castle. Until suspicion soon became known as the time of the child's birth neared. Toga sensed the coming danger and stole her away to his place of royalty. Still Izayoi's absence was not ignored and soon her father ordered she was found at all cost. And like every princess it was the custom for her to marry into royalty as well, but human not demon. King Yuuto paced the floor after his announcement to his army. The chosen prince set with his father just as impatient to meet his princess for the first time. "Please do not pace the floor King Yuuto, I'm sure the princess will show." Prince Kaito said with a peaceful smile, as he bowed to the King.
However the prince's father wasn't as polite. King Sora stood with a great dislike to all of the waiting that was taking place. "Do not bow to this man my son, he is surely holding out on us. Such lies of his daughter vanishing and not being able to find her." Sora was now face to face with King Yuuto, pure hatred covered his face as he spoke. "This is all a trick to get us to offer more money, well I'm not paying a single penny more to this kingdom even if she arrives this very second!" King Yuuto was very angry about his daughter's disappearance and now he was being accused of a crime he had not even thought of committing. We will return in two weeks if princess Izayoi is not found by then, consider our kingdoms at war. You will not make a mockery out of me or my son." With little respect to King Yuuto or any of his bystanders, King Sora pulled his katana on King Yuuto before leaving the castle. This was the signal promising his words to be set in motion. And war would surely happen if the princess didn't show.
Faraway in his own domain, Toga had a special room made for his lovely new visitor. He wanted her to be comfortable, and relaxed. And most of all protected, the chances of their child's death was high in these times. And Toga knew Izayoi's father would surely try and find her. His clawed hand carefully cupped her cheek, worry showed brightly in his eyes. "I want you to rest my dearest. The youkai maidens sense you're close to birthing our child. I promise I'll stay close if I'm needed, still these maidens will take special care of you, I promise." Her hand now covered his as she smiled up at him. To her this youkai was more of a man than any human she had encountered. Izayoi was truly honored to have his child, even though she knew it would be hard.
It was on this night another had also arrived at the home of the great Toga, and one that was also his wife. Though Toga and Inukimi were married under royal laws, the love he once felt for her was not there anymore. Plus Inukimi harbored a hate for humans that was great especially towards Izayoi. Still there was also a youkai child that was conceived between them and when word of another wife and child, Inukimi became angry. Mother and teenage son made their way through the castle pushing away guards who tried stopping them, until... "What is the meaning of this intrusion Kimi-sama? How dare you barge into my castle like this, explain yourself!" Toga spoke in a low but vicious voice, as he exited the room Izayoi was in.
Her eyes held anger and hatred, her words were short and cut through Toga like a knife. "How dare I, barge into YOUR castle!? At one time this was my castle, and our son's home. It is you who took the side of humans and bedded with that wench!" Toga growled at Inukimi's words directed at Izayoi. "Oh yes growl about it, you know I'm right. The woman is pregnant and ready to give birth to your child. Tell me if it's a boy who will rule after your death? A half breed or your first son, a full youkai who is rightfully next to rule in your place?"
Toga stepped closer to Inukimi, his eyes now turning red and his teeth clenched tightly. "Inukimi, I will allow you to leave without a fight. However I will not allow you to disgrace my unborn child or his mother. Sesshomarū is my son as well and will be given what he deserves when he is of age and proven to me he is worthy." Toga saw the look of hate in his son's eyes when he said this. It was not Toga's wish to take anything from his first son, but he did not want Sesshomarū to carry hate towards humans. Turning his direction towards Sesshomarū, Toga placed a hand on his son's shoulder and told him those very words. Just before Toga finished, Sesshomarū brushed off his father's hand and went to his mother's side. "Very well." Toga said as he pointed towards the way out.
Both mother and son started to leave, but Inukimi said one last thing before leaving. "Karma will get you for this Toga, either way that woman and child will be your death." Toga gave a growl that shook the walls and once the rumbling had stopped another sound was soon heard.
The sound of footsteps running towards him caught his attention and in seconds three maidens had come and bowed before him. "My lord your wife is asking to see you before going to the birthing room. We must hurry, the child is very close." Toga bowed before hurrying off to his wife. He entered the room as if he was calm and showed not even a hint of worry. "Please hurry Lord Toga, we must prepare her immediately." Toga nodded and quickly made his way to her.
Kneeling down to his labouring wife, Toga took her hand before leaning down to kissing her forehead. "My dearest, it's soon time." Izayoi said, through the pain she was feeling.
"Yes I know dearest, come I will carry you to the birthing room." She smiled lovingly at him and allowed him to take her to the room. He could smell the many scents coming from her. They were overpowering his senses, still he did not stop. Carefully Toga laid her down, his clawed fingers slid through her hair as he moved his hand from the back of her head. Their eyes met, making it even harder for him to leave her side. But the maidens had a job to do and without resistance he moved away and left the room. He hated leaving her side, but men were forbidden inside the birthing room.
"And so it has begun." Toga glanced over at his trusted friend and sword smith and nodded yes. "Well then I guess we should prepare as well." The two left the area and began working on the fang that was taken from Toga's mouth. "This will keep the strong demon that flows through your new child's veins at bay. I pray they never needs to use it as a weapon." Toga agreed and began giving him orders.
"Tōtōsai, my dear old friend, I fear my time here among the living will not last much longer. Many enemies are after me as well as Izayoi, my new son or daughter will most likely suffer as well. Please watch over them for me in case I or Izayoi pass before them."
"Of course Toga, it is important that this child survives though. I fear if Sesshomarū has his way, youkai will rule over humans in such a way that they will parish." Tōtōsai said, as he handed Toga the fang necklace."
It was at this point in the story of InuYasha's that the hanyou stopped the old man. "So you mean to tell me that my father made me this fang, but couldn't raise his own son?"
Tōtōsai shook his head in disbelief. "InuYasha your father encountered great hardship after you were born. Your mother's father found your father's castle and raged war on the kingdom. Many lives were lost including your mother. Your father did his best to save you. It took all he had to find the woman who raised you. His body was greatly wounded from the battle, but he would not rest till he knew you were safe."
