October came and passed and the excitement seemed to die down, at least if you weren't a Ravenclaw. Every time Teddy saw Lazarus Peakes, he was getting hyped up and praised by his peers. Rachel McIrwin and Kathy Thompson also contributed many giggles and sheepish smile in his direction, a gesture he returned with a wink towards them.
'How fickle could some girls be?' Teddy thought.
That being said, the creepy girl seemed to be having none of it. Teddy distinctly remembered Tuesday's lunch in the Great Hall where Lazarus clearly made some sort of flirtatious remark to her and she completely blew him off. She also noticed Teddy was staring at her and threw him a knowing glance. His pumpkin soup didn't seem as appetising anymore.
This was also the case on the actual day of the Gryffindor vs Slytherin Quidditch Match. Even though there was no realistic way Teddy could have played in this encounter, he still had a hard time watching from the Gryffindor stands and not picturing his godfather zooming about behind the snitch. That game resulted in a 270 – 130 victory for Gryffindor when their actual Seeker, Wilhelmina Quinn caught the Golden Snitch.
Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw had their first match towards the end of November. By this point, Teddy had redeemed himself in the eyes of his flying classmates, and had even proven his prowess in the discipline. But the damage was done and Lazarus was clearly getting insight from his team on ways to figuratively and literally soar above the competition.
The Ravenclaw stands erupted wildly as the new acquisition to the team waved to his adoring fans, adjusting his sunglasses as if to aim for "maximum coolness."
Even a few Hufflepuffs roared with delight, they were seeing history in the making after all. Teddy, Saffie, Castor and Lennox all limited themselves to a polite slow clap.
'Vilkommen! Vilkommen! That's welcome to all you monolinguists out there! Welcome to the second of what's sure to be a historical Quidditch season here at Hogwarts!' boomed a voice from the commentator box. 'I'm Jez Paine, your eyes and ears today! And mouth and nose should you so desire!'
'What does that even mean?' came another voice from the stand, this time a female one.
'It means, Belle, that we are entertainers, here to serve.'
'You are here to inform, Mr Paine!' rebutted the unmistakable voice of Professor McGonagall, always the eager Quidditch enthusiast.
'Right, right. Can we do the opening line?'
'If you must.'
'Alright! I'm Jez, this is Belle and together we're Jez and Belle! May the match begin!'
By the this point, the Snitch and Bludgers were well into circulation by this point, so all Madam Hooch had to do was toss the Quaffle and blow er whistle for the real start of the match.
'And the Quaffle is released! Iona Pott wasted no time there getting straight to it. Ravenclaw are in possession!' boomed Jez.
'Looks like she intends to pass straight to the new teammate, young Lazarus Peakes…' announced Belle.
'…which was exactly what Hufflepuff were counting on! What a swoop from Mark Macduff! Lacey Salvador is already in position to receive! Look at her go! Hufflepuff are already on the offensive with Ravenclaw trailing behind!'
Lacey Salvador was incredible to watch. All on her own she managed to dodge both Bludgers coming straight at her and dip down almost to ground level away from other players. Once she reached the hoops, she lobbed the Quaffle upwards and Toby Bradshaw smashed it towards one of the goal hoops!
'Oh, unlikely for Bradshaw there! Candy Stonewall saves the first shot at goal!' recounted Belle.
'Now Ravenclaw have the Quaffle. Callum Halinor has paired up passes with Pott to evade the Beaters' attention,' added Jez. 'Looks like finally the Quaffle goes to newcomer Peakes, who is on his own in the field. But wait! It seems like a Bludger is on its way to him – BUT NO! He is saved last minute by Trolius!'
Trolius Tugwood looked smugly at the crowd, proud that he'd just protected their star attraction, even if he did miss the shot he took afterwards.
It was rare for a match to go on with no goals for more than a few minutes, but Ian Halinor and Linda Hobbes were both incredible Keepers. Finally Mark Macduff from Hufflepuff managed to slip one past Halinor, then another, then the other Chasers began increasing the advantage, prompting Ravenclaw Captain Caleb Fawley to call for their 'Secret Plan.' That couldn't be good.
Ian scooped up the Quaffle and threw it to his brother. Callum tried to zoomed off, but Tilly Bridgit wasn't about to take chances. Her Bludger smacked straight into the younger Halinor, knocking the Quaffle out of his hands. Lacey Salvador was waiting underneath, but hadn't counted on what Belle called 'the sudden speedy stealth' of Lazarus.
'What's he doing?' wondered Jez. 'He appears to be shooting upwards. Yes, he's completely vertical, out of reach from the Beaters! Mark and Toby have no choice but to tail him as they go further up and up and… no! I don't believe it!'
Lazarus had just let go of the Quaffle, allowing it to plop down past his persecutors. Iona Pott is waiting underneath, one of few moving during this stunning moment on the pitch. Without a second's doubt, she smacks the Quaffle straight into one of the goal hoops. Poor Hobbes never saw what was coming. Ravenclaw had put points on the board.
'UNBELIEVABLE!' roared Jez.
'Ladies and gentlemen, we have just witnessed a first year player execute the Porskoff Ploy!' explained Belle. '50-10! Ravenclaw reduce the gap in the most spectacular way imaginable!'
'He's a natural! He's a legend! He's LAZARUS!' bellowed Jez.
The crowd erupted into an infuriating chant of 'Lazarus! Lazarus! Lazarus!' Clearly Teddy wasn't the only person driven insane by this chant. Things started to go horribly wrong on the pitch for the Hufflepuff team. Passes would miss, Bludgers wouldn't be deflected and goals wouldn't be stopped. Nothing worked as it should. Ravenclaw tied the score, then exceeded it. Even when Hufflepuff did score, they were shot down by the crowd with boos and insults. They had nothing going for them anymore.
