Chapter Thirty-Four: The Rain

I'm sorry…

The passenger door opened and she tumbled out. As soon as her body hit the concrete, she crawled. She didn't care about her wet clothes or the cold seeping into her bones, or the pain pulsing through her leg.

I'm sorry…

I'm sorry…

I'm sorry…

The only two words her mind could render as it was shredding itself apart.

The tears left her body warmer than her blood. She choked on sobs with more violence than the gale tossing a net of her tangled hair over her face.

Seconds passed by, struggling to amount to minutes.

Yet she crawled at an agonizing pace. It was the fastest she could manage to get away. Away from her brother's grumbling mustang. Away from the gun, forgotten in Dr. Wynn's bloody lap.

Her injured leg was a dead weight she dragged through an inch deep puddle.

The wet asphalt beneath her palm scrubbed her blood stained fingers clean. But, she could still envision her red hands shaking, as they had forced pressure against Dr. Wynn's stomach until his life hollowed out of his eyes.

"I'm sorry…"

Her words were brittle and they shattered under the turbulent air.

Yet fragments of her sobs were heard by the Shape who stood a footstep behind her.
