Against all Odds
After listening to what his sons and Draco had to tell him, Dash Rendar was calling in those members of the Resistance cell who were possessing vessels equipped with cloaking devices.
He was surprised how many they actually had.
Those who would take part in the rescue mission assembled in the hangar bay of the base and got their last instructions.
Dash was standing on a crate and his offspring realized that he looked full of energy. This wasn't the man who was almost broken because of the loss of his beloved wife. The relentless mercenary was back. Their father was clearing his throat to get the attention of those gathered.
"The commander is brought to the Kashyyyk system and still onboard the First Order dreadnought. We will go in cloaked so they won't realize we're there. As I learned they also took Nomi's ship during the abduction. I hope that we are able to retrieve the Aquarius as well. But the commander's rescue is our main target. Keep this in mind during the whole mission. May the Force be with us."
He jumped down the crate and walked over to the Outrider followed by the triplets and Draco who had insisted to help make things right. Jaden and Tasherit were heading for the Trader's Luck, while the other pilots were heading for their own ships. All in all were 10 vessels and its pilots ready to take action.
Tarik was watching as they launched. The former smuggler and ambassador was now the one responsible to keep the base safe.
While the rescue team was on the way, Nomi was planning her escape route. She knew the layout of a First Order dreadnought since the Resistance captured the blueprints at some point. The best would be to crawl through the vents, until she would reach an Ysalamiri-free area. Odds were high that not the whole capital ship was equipped with those animals. Maybe it was only the cell block and the interrogation room where they were around. If she would have access to the Force it would make things much easier.
The commander took a deep breath when she felt that the Ysalamiri must have been fallen asleep. She summoned the Force and reached out with her hand, pulling the grate loose and let it glide smoothly to the floor. Grinning she Force leaped up, put the grate back in place and begun her crawl toward freedom. First it would be mandatory to get a weapon and then her lightsaber back, but this would be easy. She continued to crawl and had the numb feeling again which showed her that the creatures must be awake now. Cursing inwardly she made her way to the first point of separation. The Jedi Master turned to the left and almost cheered as she felt the Force after crawling a few more meters. She was right with her assumption that not the whole ship was full of the lizard-like critters.
Nomi continued her way until she came to the next point of separation where she turned to the right, being pretty sure that this would be the way to the armory. It was a long crawl in the narrow vent and even for her as a Jedi it was exhausting to do so.
Eventually she reached her destination. She peered through the grate and saw nobody inside the armory. Breathing a sigh of relief she reached out with the Force to obscure the surveillance cameras' sighting. Then she loosened the grate like she did before in her cell and lowered it to the floor carefully without making any noise. She dropped down and landed in a crouch before she rose and begun to search the armory for her lightsaber. The Jedi Master smiled when she saw it lying on a workbench and it was still intact. She moved over, grabbed it and hooked it at her belt. Now a blaster and a vibro knife to be prepared for every occasion.
Being in the armory it was easy to find what she needed including the necessary ammunition.
On Nomi's face was a lopsided grin to be seen. Her chances of escape had increased immensely. Having enough of crawling through the vents, Nomi walked over to the door and pushed a button on the panel there. The door opened with a hiss. After seeing that the coast is clear she stepped out of the armory holding the stolen blaster at the ready.
Then she began to walk toward the hangar bay where she was sure to find her beloved ship.
In another part of the galaxy it didn't take long and the small rescue fleet was making the jump to hyperspace. Dash Rendar was well aware that the odds were limited to stand against a dreadnought with all the firepower it was able to muster. They had only to rely on the surprise effect and the hope that Nomi would find a way to escape her cell. This was a lot of if and when.
Dash Jr. looked over to his father since he felt his unease. The former mercenary was so convincing back at the base, but now there were doubts it seemed.
"All will go well, father," he said reaching out with the Force to give his father more confidence.
"I hope so, Dash I couldn't live without your mother," the warrior's response came nearly inaudible, but his son heard it nevertheless.
The other two Rendar offspring felt their father's mood as well, while they were checking the ship's weapons system again since they wanted to take no risk. Feeling the slight ripple in the Force they knew that their elder brother was taking care of their father already.
Corran was looking up from his work and cast a glance at Draco who was sitting at the Dejarik table. The man had changed from foe to ally. But could they be sure it wouldn't be vice versa after reaching their destination? The young Jedi wrinkled his forehead. Could they actually trust the man? Either way he would keep a watchful eye on the pirate.
