Cold winds blew against the house, making it creek under it's force. It only lasted for a minute, so the noise alone wasn't enough. The sound of footsteps, the loud voice that wished him farewell, the door swinging shut; non of this stirred the skeleton from his slumber. Expect when his skull throbbed. The pain felt like someone had taken a knife to his skull. A pain he could physically say that it made it to his top 5 least favorite experience. He lean his body to the side, his bed creaking from his movement. Squeezing his eyesockets, he willed the pain to go away. The vague memories of the last reset crashed through his mind; slowly eroding against each other. The rest of the world became detached, all he could concentrate on was the pain rooted deep in his skull. He could barely hear the other monsters chattering outside his home. All he felt, all he knew was the pain of that moment.
why'd ya do it kiddo?
Grunting his teeth, he managed to get out of bed. Something must have gone wrong. It was the only thing he could think of. Making his way to his sentry station, he thought of numerous reason why you had to do a reset. If you had died, a simple load was enough. But a whole reset? You didn't even make it to the core. So why... ?
did... you change again? please, not again. i... i can't...go through that again...
Reaching the bridge to the Ruin Doors, he slowed his pace. His heavy breaths condense into small puffs of clouds. Soul skipping a beat at the sight of a blue and pink striped sweater and it's owner arguing with a sentient flower.
there you are... your still you...
The mysterious fallen human who had captured his heart. He couldn't place when it was, if it was at the restaurant, when he looked into your soul or even from right at the begining when you held out your hand to him. Falling in love with you was so easy; admitting it was the hard part. A love that hurted him after your betrayal. But even so, he found himself gravitating towards you. The longer he got to know you, the more he fell in love.
"You're an idiot!"
"You already said that. Like about 50 times now."
"Then I'll keep saying it until you get it! Idiot idiot IDIOT!!! You really think that-"
"I don't know. But I had to do something. Anything is better then what could have happened."
"So... feel any different?" You didn't respond. "Of course you don't... figures."
"frisk..." Hearing your name cut through your conversation; you and Flowey looked away from each other. Sans didn't hear the whole discussion, but he got the gist of it. Something wrong did happened on the last run and apparently a reset was necessary. You stared at him with that goofy guilty face of yours. Scratching your head trying to find some excuse for what you did, which only led with you apologizing again and again while bowing your head. Flowey sneered at your action before leaving.
Sans stopped you before your head could fall out. All the apologizing wasn't necessary, just a simple "not gonna happened again" was all he needed. But you didn't say that. You didn't really give him a response. No matter how hard he tried to make you promise. He got nothing. Sans explained that a reset isn't something you should be playing around. That it's properties are unknown and can lead to unexpected consequences. You just ignored it all by walking past him. There it was, that determination of yours. Always doing things on your own. He wanted to scream. Oh how badly he wanted to scream, to shake some sense into you. But seeing your back, seeing you walk away from him... he found himself hugging you instead.
Eyesockets tightly closed shut, his skull buried in the crook of your neck and his arms wrapped above your chest. don't leave... His whole body was desperately screaming as he held on to you. don't push me out... don't leave me... Once he realized what he had done, he quickly let go and stumbled away. His face burned a bright blue as he stuttered to explained why he did that. Except he didn't even know why. Before he could shortcut his way out, you pulled him into your arms. You held him so closely that he could feel your heart beat against his own chest. With your hand softly petting the back of his skull, his head loosen up from his stiffen surprised state. His eyes dropping, he found himself relaxing as your crisp apple sent draped around him. Wanting to bury deeper into your warmth, he returned your hug.
The softness of your hand on his head, your body warming his own... everything lulled him to a sleep-like state. Before the reset, Sans wanted to tell you how much he had grown to care for you. If you would stay with him. When you started to hum, his left eye glowed a soft light blue glow. Even his soul wanted nothing more then to just be in your arms. To feel safe, to feel loved. All too soon, you released him. "Sans... I..." You paused for a moment before shaking your head. Something was bothering you. Whatever it was, he could see that it weighed heavy on your soul.
"kid, is there something wrong?" Smiling nervously, you waved away his accusation.
"I uh... just wanted to say that... I like you?" Sans eyesocket grew wide as you fumbled through your words. "Thats right! Sans, uh..I.. I like you," you said with more confident, "... I really do.. and.. I... I just want you to be happy." Smiling that smile of yours, you grabbed his hand and pulled him along. He should have been overjoyed to hear you say those words except he could feel that there was something else you wanted to tell him, but you choosed not to. It was only for a second but you had looked... afraid... lost. Before having seen that look on your face, he would've been over the moon by your sudden confession. Unfortunately you didn't give him a chance to think about it and soon he had forgotten about it. Going through all of Papyrus puzzles, facing the Snowdin guards and numerous monsters; you never let go of your hand. Without much effort, he had tried to slip away. But you smiled at him so happily, urging him to continue following you. He found himself smiling to himself when you weren't looking. He would be lying if he said he didn't like the feel of his hand intertwined with yours.
For the rest of the day the two of you enjoyed each others company. At one point you had asked for his phone, with a questionable look he gave it to you. You took a picture of yourself with one of your cheeky smiles before taking one with Sans. He'd asked what the pictures were for, you just shrugged and snapped away. Eating nice creams together and sitting by the snow puffs, you used his phone and captured every moment. He chuckled when you tripped into the snow when you tried chasing after the little white dog. Even landed a few snowballs at his brother. Which the two of you had hidden behind a tree, snickering when Papyrus failed to see where the attack came from. A lazy day with no real objective. He kept telling himself that he should go, that he had things to do and so did you. But everytime you smiled at him... He didn't find any reason why he shouldn't just stay. To just enjoy this moment.
After battling Papyrus, his brother asked you for a date in his room. Sans had joined, curious about it since the first run. But finding out how harmless it was, he was able to relax and even laughed out loud when he saw your face when you ate the spaghetti. When it was over, Papyrus left the two of you alone to meet up with Undyne. He even warned his brother from canoodling too much in public. Sans face quickly lit up, especially since his hand had somehow found itself intertwined with yours again. He tried to release your hand but you didn't let him, you merely smiled and waved goodbye at his brother. Not bothered at the slightest by his comment.
Alone in the house, you took his phone again taking a picture of his bluish face before returning it to him. Hopping onto the couch with your legs crossed, you patted the seat next to you. He gave a lazy shrug and joined you. For the rest of the day, the two of you enjoyed each other's company watching whatever was playing on the tv. Somewhere in all the reruns, you had ended up resting your head on his femur and his hands idly combing through your hair. He could vaguely remember telling you that he didn't make for a comfortable pillow. But you just came at him saying that skeletons are soft and cuddly. If his brother had said that, then who could argue that he was wrong?
When his brother came back, the three of you ate dinner, laughed, played boardgames and watched MTT films. During the whole time, Sans wondered if he was dreaming. If his days could continue playing like this. The three of you living happily like this. The surface world didn't interest him much, just knowing that he had his brother with him and that he was happy was all he needed. But now with you, he could see his days getting much brighter. He wondered if you really considering taking the advice he gave you on that first run at the restaurant and staying with them.
Later on his brother said his good nights, saying that he had to still wake up early. That even though they had captured a human friend, he still had to patrol Snowdin if he wanted to be in the Royal Guards. With his brother asleep, you ended up laying your head back on his leg. Even though the tv was playing, he wasn't paying much attention to it. Durning dinner, Sans and his brother talked about you meeting Undyne and Alphys later on. To make sure you could safely hide in Snowdin without worrying about a spear hitting you. You didn't comment much on the subject if you were planning to stay. So he'd worry about it another time. Besides, the thought of leaving you for a moment, he felt a strange feeling that you would just disappear. Though, the more time he spent with you, the stronger that feeling got. That he found himself saying it out loud.
You didn't answer him. But he could feel your body tense up. Afraid of what the answer could be, he ignored it. Not wanting this peaceful daze like dream to stop, he let the subject drop. His hand that combed over your hair went to your back. Lightly massaging the tension away. The time lazily crawled on with neither of you saying a word. Without him knowing, he had fallen asleep. His head resting on the couch arm, he looked down and saw that you had wrapped your arms around his torso and placed your cheek on his sternum. His face flushed for a second before he closed his eyes and went back to resting his head on the couch arm.
His phalanges explored your back, lightly touching your skin where your oversized shirt bunched up. Prodding at the soft, squishy texture of your skin. You let out a comforting sigh pressing yourself flush against him. Sometimes below your bandaged chest, he would feel a couple of scars which he found himself lightly tracing them. Never wondering where or how you got them, instead feeling how the skin scrunched up and stretched in random patterns. He had tried to ask how you got them, especially the surgical ones in the last run. But it seemed to be a touchy subject for you. Somewhere in his mindless exploration, he ended up at the bottom part of your back.
He felt a couple of scars that were oddly organized. Lifting his head up, he looked at where his phalanges were. Sitting above your shorts, were dark uniformed burn lines. Slowly sitting up to take a closer look, he was able to make out the image. What he saw caused his bones to go cold. They weren't just lines but a barcode. Someone had branded you. His phalange lightly went over the letters GN-LAB 69912 underneath the bars. Reading them out loud only left him colder then what he already was. what does it mean?
"It's my name." Sans frozed when he heard your voice. He wasn't aware that you had woken up or that he had voiced that question out loud. "69912 means Frisk." You shifted away from him, sitting on the edge of the couch. While Sans sat up, you rearranged your disheveled shirt. "They used a Pythagoras numerology to name us." Before he could ask who they were, you stood up. "Is it okay if I use your bathroom? I kinda want to clean myself up before going to Waterfall." Sans numbly nodded his head.
Hearing the door open, close and shortly after the sound of water running, he looked at his hand. The phantom scar, the ghostly metal plate... his eyesockets went dark before burying his unwanted past memories. Guess he did have something in common with you besides having bones. He just wished it wasn't because of something like this. Having no point in going back to bed, Sans decided to get a head start to the day. Papyrus was surprised to see him up so early, mentioning that you were a good influence on him. You tipped your head in confusion and looked blankly at Sans. Your stares become unnerving that Sans found himself shrinking away.
With everyone ready, Papyrus picked both you and Sans up (tucking each under his arms) and went straight to Waterfall. On the way there, Sans was worried how this meeting was going to go. He'd really would like to avoid going through a load file. The less chance you have for using that ability of yours the better. When they arrived, the short skeleton almost had himself a heart attack as a spear came at them out of nowhere. Papyrus had let out a surprised shrill before backing up and dodging the attacks. Undyne performing a hero landing in front of them, stood tall in her heavy clad armor.
Papyrus looked nervous at first before clearing his nonexistent throat. Calmly the tall skeleton said that you were his new human friend and he wanted permission for you to stay. Undyne looked at him as if he grew another skull before stating that human's aren't pets. Papyrus was shocked saying it wasn't like that. Back and forth the two tall monsters went. Arguing over the good of the monster kind against friendship. Unfortunately for Undyne, Papyrus started giving her puppy eyes while smushing both you and Sans against his skull. The Guard leader started to sweat, even more when Papyrus got closer to her face. She looked at your air-headed face before returning her attention to the tall skeleton.
Letting out a defeated sigh, she agreed to let you go but only if you could prove to her that you weren't some coward that would hide behind the kind hearted skeleton. She knew something was going to happen, which was one of the main reason she didn't let Papyrus join the guard. Papyrus wanted to object to the battle but you had already squirmed your way out from his hold and accepted her challenge. The two of you faced each other with Undyne giving her all. Having fought her many times before, you had remembered her patterns making the fight too easy. Even though Undyne was getting tired without getting even a single hit in (or receiving any damages) she still refused to quit. Papyrus seeing his long time friend over exerting herself, managed to sneak behind her and held her. Stopping her futile pursuit in trying to win over the human.
Papyrus thanked you for not fighting back as a tired Undyne struggled to escape his hold. The tall skeleton petted the merfolk monster's red hair while telling her that she did a good job and was happy that both his friends came out unharmed. His words and action caused her lips to pout. Papyrus having managed to settle her down, he released her and went back to carrying you and Sans back under his arms. Seeing that Undyne still hasn't warmed up to you yet, Papyrus decided that they all should hang out at Undyne's place. The warrior fish tried to hold him back to voice her objection towards his idea. But it was too late, Papyrus started sprinting away with Undyne clinging for her life as her arm looped around his neck.
At Undyne's place, everyone had a cup of tea, listen to her play her piano and burned her house down with a vigorous cooking lesson. All in which led her to see that you weren't so bad. Papyrus deeming the meeting as a success, he took off towards Hotland with you and Sans under his arm and Undyne sitting on his shoulder. Reaching Alphys' Lab, the short scientist was overwhelmed at first at the sudden visit. Eventually she settled down in which Mettaton joined in. The small meeting to discuss how their new human friend can stay turned into a small party. Mettaton providing the lights and music and Alphys providing the food. Which was only a cup of water and some dry ramen, but even so, Sans found himself enjoying it.
Undyne wanting to recreate the "bonding over karaoke", Alphys and Papyrus layed out a couple of folding chairs while Mettaton provided a screen with lists of "human history of music". You and Sans opted out of having to sing and resigned to just sitting down and enjoying hearing everyone else sing. Sans glancing at you, he found himself having a hard time not laughing out loud. Your expressionless face clapping along to the music looked so silly to him that he found it kinda cute.
Noticing him looking at you, you tipped you head to the side and asked of there was something wrong. He mearly placed a finger at the side of your mouth, stretching it upward. You still looked confused that he pointed at his own face. Trying his best, he tried recreating your expressionless face which only made you laugh. Laughing himself, the two of you went back to enjoying watching their friends sing. As time went on, Sans could feel you grow quieter.
He wanted to see what was wrong, but something kept him from doing so. Something cold frozed him to his seat. That feeling of you disappearing grew and grew that he quickly pushed his frozen body to hold your hand. Feeling your warmth, he could feel his bones thaw. But then he felt your hand tremble in his. Ever so slowly, he found himself looking towards you. Your whole body was quaking as tears ran down your face. You watched as your friends sang, body trembling you didn't move. Your grip on Sans tighten as your lips moved causing Sans eyesockets to grow wide in fear. Before he could do anything, his world turned black.
Sorry...
Slowly opening his eyesockets, he stared at his bedroom ceiling. Even though his skull felt like it might split into two, all he cared about was the trembling of your lips as they said sorry, the tears that rolled down your cheeks.
What went wrong? The more he pondered, the more he found himself crying. Lifting his hand high, he willed himself to remember the feel of your hand in his own. Unable to feel it, he took out his phone and scrolled through his gallery. But they were gone. All the pictures you took, all the memories he made with you... gone. The thought alone that nothing he did would ever matter, broke him. His body quake as tears freely rolled down his cheek bones. Gripping his phone tighter, he brought his closed hands to his face as his headache got worse. He rolled in bed until he able to bury his face in his pillow. Breaking into a sob, he wished with all his soul to go back. To go back to that dream with you. Cursing himself for waking up and ending it all.
After what felt like hours had past, he slowly rose from his bed. Passing Grillby's place, he was tempted to drink away the lose he felt. But he had already wasted enough time. not that it matters... Bones aching, eyesocket puffy, he willed himself to move his body towards his Snowdin post. When he drew close, what he saw before him made him come to a halt. There in the middle of the snow was you... embracing his brother.
Shaking out of his stunned state, he quickly shortcutted behind a nearby tree. Hidden, he stared as you cried out as you desperately held onto his brother. Papyrus held you in return while whispering gentle words to you. When you started sobbing how it was your fault, Papyrus' grip tighten around you. With his skull buried in your neck, he continued to reassure you that everything was going to be okay. When your cries turned into silent sobs, Papyrus straighten himself up and petted your head. You looked up at him in which his brother wiped your tears away. He smiled at you and you at him.
The scene that played before him shook his soul to it's very core. Staining his memories of you in betrayal.
... why...
For the rest of the day, Sans could only stare as you and his brother grew closer. Even when his brother had found him and dragged him along to do the puzzles, he could only watch as you and Papyrus enjoyed each others company. What hurted him more than anything else, was when you would pass by him without saying a simple hello. For the first time in all the runs, you ignored him. You didn't rush towards him and waited for him to say something new. Instead you ran to catch up with his brother. Hand on hand, Papyrus gave you a grand tour of Snowdin town. While you spent every minute with his brother, he loosely followed behind.
Eyesockets devoid of any light, his gaze fell on to you as he hid behind his house. Papyrus was putting his number in your phone with such a happy aura that kept him at bay. Giving back your phone, you leaped towards him. Wrapping your arms around his neck, the two of you spinned around in the snow, laughing with joy. Holding you close so that you wouldn't fall down, Papyrus pulled out his own phone and took a picture of the two of you. In one of the pictures, you even placed a soft kiss on his cheek bone which left him blushing a bright orange hue. Putting you down, he gave his own pseudo skeleton kiss on your forehead before fixing your hair. With a final goodbye, his brother waved enthusiastically at you. Reminding you that we would wait by his house with phone on hand like a good "boy-friend".
Standing at his Waterfall post, you past by Sans while chatting with his brother on the phone. Standing by his telescope, you continue to walk by as you laughed at whatever his brother had said. Throughout Waterfall, you continued walking past him... never once hanging up. But even so, he waited patiently for you to look at him. Even though you never did, he never left his gaze off of you.
Slowly... ever so slowly, he would see it. See you falter, see that joy darken into unbridled darkness. You hid it well though. Fooling everyone around you even his brother. But not him, he saw it... You where hiding something. Before you could go away... and leave me behind.. He wanted to know why... why did you abandon him.
Having the small monster child save you from Undyne's attack, you proceeded to walk towards the hidden walkway. Before you could reach the room of the echo flowers, Sans appeared at the edge of the waters. He stopped you at your tracks before you could face Undyne once more. Since the road was narrow, you couldn't get past the short skeleton. The two of you stood there with just the noise of water creaking filling the room. Time stretched when finally Sans saw you were about to talk.
"kiddo... is it fun?" His vision quaked as he found himself unable to look at your face. "is it fun to toy around with my feelings? to toss me aside as if nothing ever happened? to ignore me?" As you stood perfectly still as he gritted out his feelings, he still couldn't look up at you. "i get it. paps a great guy, who wouldn't fall for him. but what i don't get is why... why ignore me!? why the reset!!? those fuckin resets... why!!?" With all his strength he looked at your face, hoping to find an answer as to why you had thrown him away. "f...frisk?"
What he saw brought fear into his soul. Fear that screamed at him to run and hide, to do anything but stay here. For there you stood, your face glitched as it fought to keep that sad smile on your face. Silent tears ran down your cheeks as your hands closed tighter and tighter by your side. Ochre hair, pale skin, rosy cheeks and red eyes quickly flickered across your face. "S...Sans... I'm sorry. I t-tried to fix my mistake but...b-but... I only made it worse..."
no... no no no no... this isn't happening!
Sans rushed forward and gripped your arms, willing you to stay. "it's going to be o-okay... kiddo, everything is going to be okay. j-just stay... you can do that right? frisk? f-frisk!?" Once your soul loomed out of your chest, white glowing shards began chipping away from your body.
"O-once I found out what I have done... I...I tried to fix it. But it only ... I... I thought if I was with... I'm so sorry Sans. I really do care a lot about you but I couldn't ... I-"
"shh shh shh,... just stay... please...please don't disappear! frisk... frisk!" Large light blue tears ran down Sans face as he found himself having trouble voicing his plead. With shaky hands he cupped your face. Seeing his words die beneath his tears, you gave him the best smile you could muster. But it only broke him more as your body continued to break down as if it was made of porcelain.
"When... When I felt that I couldn't... that I couldn't fix it anymore... Papyrus held me and said that it's okay, that I did a good job! That I did everything I could and... and that he believed in me! Believed that everything was going to be okay... that he... that he will be with me until the end. But I couldn't let him do that! You need him and... and he needs you... I... I love you guys too much to do that!"
"stop it!"
"I'm really glad I met you-"
"stop! don't say it!"
Sans quickly embraced you, desperately holding onto you. But as he held you, he could hear the shattering pieces as you continued to chip away. Unable to say anything, Sans cried in disappear as you petted his skull. "Sans, I'm happy I got to meet you and Papyrus. Happy that I made so many friends and got to meet so many kind monsters. Falling down here was the greatest thing that could have happened to me."
"hang on!! please please! this can't be happening!"
"Sans... thank you for everything." Your soft voice disappeared as Sans collapsed onto the ground. His eyesockets widen as he saw only small remains of glowing shards floating in front of him.
"FRIIIIIISK!!!!" Miserably he frantically tried to grab onto what was left of you. As your light vanished, Sans found himself alone surrounded by echo flowers. Unable to deal with your disapeareance, he hugged his body as it collapsed into itself. His whole body shaked uncontrollably as he sobbed.
"Sans..." "thank you..." "thank you..." "I love you guys..."
Hearing your voice from the little flowers only added to his pain. He cried out as your voice continued to ring out. After everything that had happened, he still didn't tell you how much he had come to love you. He cried until he couldn't cry anymore. Worn out, his heavy bones unwrapped itself. Sitting against the cave walls, he closed his eyes, wishing you would reset. That he would find you standing in the snow once more. "Stay determined..."
"frisk?!" He looked around but you weren't there. Opening his phone, he stared at his empty gallery. Time ticked by as he kept dreaming that your smiling face would appear that he failed to see the world around him. Slowly the world grew darker and darker. Once the air around him became eerily quiet, his bones chilled painfully. He quickly stood up and turned to every direction; trying to gauge his location.
"Sans, did you miss me?" His skull pailed as the light in his eyesockets vanished. A sickly voice chocked him to a standstill. Before he could process, arms covered in green sleeves snaked from behind... wrapping themselves around his shoulders. A painfully cold body pressed against his back as nauseating candied breath blew across the side of his skull. His peripheral vision caught a small glimpse of a pair of red orbs before feeling something slimy lick across the side of his skull. "Sansy... we are going to have so much fun..."
His vision turned black as the world resetted.
