AN: Just in case you guys missed it because I had to post two chapters at once, there is a prologue before this chapter. So you can go back and read that...or not if you don't I guess. Anyways, enjoy the new re-write of Frozen Heart!
Lightning flashed through the dark clouds in the sky, accompanied by heavy rainfall and harsh wind hitting the kingdom of Avalon. Everyone in the kingdom did not dare to go outside in fear of getting caught up in the terrible storm. The only people that dared to were the brave, or if there was an emergency.
The king paced in the throne room as he waited for the doctor to arrive for his wife who was in labor. She had gone into labor a month early, and as luck would have it, it happened on the day a massive storm hit.
"Where the hell is he?" The king worried as she bit his nails. "We called for him almost an hour ago."
"I'm sure he's almost here, your majesty." The main guard Daichi tried to reassure. "He should be here any minute."
"He better," the king bit the nail of his thumb nervously. "I don't know how much more my wife can wait."
As Daichi was about to continue to try and calm the king down, there was a knock on the castle's main door. The king stopped pacing and looked over towards the door, and as he heard another knock, he ran over towards the door and opened it before the guard could.
He smiled in relief once he saw it was the doctor. "You're finally here. Thank God."
The doctor entered the castle, letting the king take his coat. "I'm sorry I wasn't able to come sooner. The storm made the voyage over here difficult."
"All that matters is that you're here safely." The king said as he passed the doctor's coat to Daichi.
The doctor straightened his shirt as he looked back over to the king. "Where is she?"
"In the master bedroom. I'll lead you there."
The doctor nodded and followed the king as he led him up the staircase to the top floor and down the dark hallway. The only light were the candles on the wall and the flashes of lightning lightening the black sky. As they reached the doors of the master bedroom, the king opened them to reveal the queen in bed. Panting heavily as she clenched the sheets tightly. Her pale skin glistened with sweat and she groaned with each contraction that hit her. The doctor made his way over to the queen as the king closed the doors behind him.
"I'm here your majesty. I'm sorry I took so long to get here." He grabbed the end of the blanket. "Now let's see how far you're dilated." He lifted up the blanket to check. "Well, good thing that I got here when I did. The baby is coming right now."
"Huh?" The king panicked. "Right now?"
The doctor nodded and laid out a few cloths on the bed between her legs and knelt down. "Alight your majesty, I need you to push when I say, alright?" The queen slowly nodded, gripping the sheets tighter. "Push!"
The queen's screams filled the room as she pushed with all the strength she had. The doctor kept encouraging her to keep pushing even though she felt like giving up, but she kept on fighting.
The king stood by the door, not sure what to do. Hearing his wife's pain-filled screams made him feel weak and useless. Feelings he's rarely ever felt before. He was a king, royalty since the day he was born. He usually had everything controlled in the palms of his hands, but right now he felt utterly useless.
He cringed as he continued to listen to her screams and looked away. Wanting for her screams to stop. Then as if someone had answered his prayers, the room grew silent. The only sound he could hear was a soft cry. He faced back towards the doctor and saw him cleaning his newborn baby in his arms. He smiled at the king brightly.
"It's a boy."
The king ran over to them and admired his new son. A soft smile spread across his face, but it was short-lived when he noticed something odd.
"Wait a minute. Why is his hair color dark?"
The doctor looked down at the newly born prince and saw that the baby had dark brown hair, almost black. Unlike his parents who had lighter brown hair.
"That's strange. Maybe it's-"
The doctor was cut off by the queen's screams again. They both looked back at her and saw that she was still in labor.
"Oh, God." The doctor handed the baby off to the king before running back to the queen to help. The king just stood there, paralyzed with shock as he watched his wife deliver another baby. The doctor used another cloth to clean the crying infant as he made his way back over to the king.
"It's another boy, and he has the same light brown hair color as you and your wife but look." He pointed to the small patch of dark brown hair on the top of the baby's head. "It's like the folk tale."
"Twins…" The king whispered, trying to process everything. "My wife and I just had twins."
Your majesty," the doctor walked up to the king concerned. "You know that twins are forbidden in Avalon because of the curse."
"I know…"
They both looked over at the queen, who was being taken care of by the maids, and helped her sit up. "You know you have to-"
"Let me see my babies." The queen tiredly smiled as she reached out her hands.
The king and doctor exchanged looks before walking back to the queen, carefully putting each baby in her arms. She smiled down at them as tears began welling up in her eyes. She looked up at her husband brightly. "I have the perfect names for them."
"Honey…"
She looked down at the firstborn. "This one is going to be Hikaru," she looked over at his brother, "this one Kaoru. Since we couldn't decide which name was better, why not give one of them each a name?"
The doctor cleared his throat, drawing the queen's attention away from her son's. "Your majesty, would it be wise to name the firstborn twin?"
"Why wouldn't it be?"
"Well," he cleared his throat again, giving another glance at the king as if he was asking for help. "In Avalon twins are forbidden because of the curse." He looked at Hikaru before meeting the queen's eyes and her eyes widened. "We have to kill him."
"No!" The queen yelled as she clutched her babies to her chest. "You can't!"
"Queen Yuzuha, I know that you and the king got married only a year ago, but you know the folk tale here in Avalon. His hair is a different color than his twin's. If we don't kill him he'll use his powers to take over the kingdom like Kuro."
"We can teach him to be good!" She looked at her husband desperately. "Black magic can be used to control his magic, right? That's how the folk tale said Kuro was defeated!"
"Queen Yuzuha…"
He took a step towards her and she launched out of bed, backing away from him. "Stay away from us!"
"Yuzuha! Lay back down!"
"Your majesty, you can't be standing!"
"You will not kill my son!" The queen sobbed. "I don't care what the folk tale says or not! If you kill my son I'll kill myself!"
"But what is the kingdom going to think about this?" The doctor asked. "After there has been a law for the past two hundred years that made families that had twins kill the firstborn. They might feel betrayed and riot against your family."
"He's just an innocent baby! He didn't ask to be plagued with this god-forsaken curse!"
The king looked over at his cowering wife, who was now begging to bleed from standing up so quickly after just giving birth, then to his eldest son who was crying alongside his twin in their mother's arms. The queen looked over at him, pleading with him.
"Then we'll hide him." The king said.
"What?" The doctor looked over at the king in shock.
"We can keep him hidden from the kingdom in the castle. No one will know that he was born and we don't have to kill him."
"Thank God." The queen cried in relief and hugged her sons closer. The king signaled the maids to help the queen back to bed before she could hurt herself anymore.
The doctor was speechless, not really knowing how to respond. "I...guess that could work, but won't that make him feel isolated?"
"It's the only way to keep him alive." He continued to watch his wife get back into bed, his eyes landing on his eldest son, narrowing before walking towards his wife. "I will not have my son murdered."
Six Years Later...
Six years passed, the now six-year-old twins were playing out in the yard as the guards and queen watched over them. The king stepped out onto the deck and walked up to the railing next to where Daichi stood.
"Having a break your majesty?" Daichi asked.
"Yes, I needed a little breather." His eyes stayed on his eldest son Hikaru, who was playing tag with his twin Kaoru. "Any power outburst today?"
"Nope. The gloves the Nekozawa family gifted us seem to help control them. Especially his new fire ability."
"Two powers." The king ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "The Nekozawa's said that was unheard of. Ice we could handle because it was mostly harmless, but fire? I'm praying we'll still have a castle by the end of the week."
Daichi chuckled. "Well, I'm sure Naomi can help him control his new fire powers if she got him to control his ice powers."
"Let's hope so."
…
"Over here." Kaoru grabbed Hikaru's hand as he led him past some bushes. "They'll never spot us here."
The twins chuckled as they went deep into the bushes, out of sight of everyone until they reached the tall brick wall separating the outside world. Kaoru let go of Hikaru's hand and hopped down into the shallow water of the stream that led outside the walls and grabbed one of the steel pipes from the barrier. "I found a loose pipe here while playing with one of the princes from a neighboring kingdom. We can use this to sneak you out without anyone noticing."
"Sweet," Hikaru smiled. "I've been begging mom and dad to let me out."
"Come help me out so we can get this done faster."
"Yeah, hold on."
Hikaru hopped down into the stream and began helping Kaoru loosen the pipe. Within a few minutes, the pipe was unscrewed and Kaoru placed it to the side before crawling through.
"Come on, I think this leads us to the forest."
Hikaru's smile grew and he was about to follow his brother when he suddenly felt a pair of hands grab his waist and lifted him up.
"Where do you think you two are going?" A guard glared.
"We-We were just playing." Kaoru stuttered out. "We weren't planning anything bad. I promise."
"Yeah, I'm sure your parents would love to hear that you were 'playing' with the steel pipes leading out of the castle."
The guard grabbed Kaoru once he was within reach and began carrying them back to their parents.
"This isn't fair." Hikaru protested as he hit the guards armored back. "Everyone else gets to go outside. Why can't I? I just want to see what it's like out there."
"Yeah, and why does Hikaru have to hide whenever guests come over? Dad says we even have to pretend he's not real."
"I don't make the rules kids. I just enforce them."
Hikaru growled and began hitting the guard harder. "Let us go!" He just ignored the young prince's orders and continued walking. "I said let us go!"
…
The king and Daichi ran through the yard towards the bloodcurdling scream of one of the guards. Everything was so peaceful just moments ago, and just as he realized his sons were nowhere in sight there was a scream and he feared the two had to be related somehow.
As they made it to the scene, the king stood horrified as one of the guards, who seemed to have been thrown back, the metal of his armor strangely bent as if some unknown force had attacked him. The guard was alive but was badly injured. He glowered viciously at the princes, who were cowering in fear as if they were frightened by whatever just happened. Once they saw their dad and Daichi they ran over to them.
"Daddy!"
They cried as they hugged him.
"What happened here?" The king asked as he and Daichi tried to calm down the twins.
"I'll tell you what the hell happened!" The guard hissed as he limped over to them. "You're demon spawn of a child just used his powers to try and kill me!"
The king furrowed his brows confused and looked around their surroundings. "I don't see any ice or burn marks anywhere."
"That's because he used a different power and flung me like a rag doll!'
"Di-Different power?" The king met eyes with Daichi, who seemed just as shocked. "That means he has three."
"Your majesty, I get that you couldn't kill your son, but no matter how much you believe you can train him to be good it won't work." His glare fell back on Hikaru, who was still holding onto his dad terrified. "He's destined to be evil."
