Soft snores filled the room, and Dabi woke first. Eyes cracking open to see the Police Chief, Kenji Tsuragamae, sitting across from them, sipping on a green tea. Seeing his dog face almost made Dabi think it had all been a cruel dream. "Good afternoon."
Dabi looked down at the Hero still sleeping peacefully on his chest and back up at the Chief. "You're here to arrest me, right?"
He cleared his throat and shuffled his stack of papers, "Well...no. You've been asleep for the better part of the day, and we were able to corroborate most of your story. I suppose no one ever ran your DNA for matches...an awful oversight on our end. Endeavor is indeed your father...and we've confirmed the deaths of All for One and Shigaraki Tomura. As well, camera footage from the hospital and Endeavor's office was recovered. After reviewing the tapes, we acknowledge your assistance in saving Hawks' life. I've gotten your charges decreased. However, you will still have to stand before a jury to receive your final verdict. As for jail…" He paused, flipping through one of his sheets, "The judge we consulted is allowing you to be on house arrest until your trial date."
Dabi turned his gaze to the ceiling, biting back the sore feeling in his throat, "Thank you...I uh, I don't have anywhere to go though."
"My...house…" Keigo grumbled on his chest.
"What?" Dabi asked softly.
"Stay with me…." He groaned trying to shift his weight around to face the Chief. "Can you set it up at my address?"
Kenji nodded, "Of course, Hawks. You both might also be pleased to hear that everyone from the Hero Commission involved with Hawks' undercover case has been taken into custody. We are launching a full investigation into their company."
Dabi smiled, "Thank goodness…"
Kenji held up the small monitor, "Unfortunately, we need to get moving, the judge gave us a pretty small time frame." He stood, walking over and unlocking Dabi's cuffs. He attached the bracelet sized monitor to Dabi's wrist and nodded, "This one is pretty state of the art. You can shower with it on and everything. No restrictions. If you go beyond half a mile from the set location, the device will release a toxin to render you unconscious. So please be careful. I'll activate it once we arrive. "
Dabi nudged Keigo gently, "Come on, babe. You gotta get up for a minute." Keigo groaned, but allowed Dabi to stand. "Can you make it to the car?" Keigo nodded, wrapping around Dabi's arm. "Ok, let's go."They arrived, and got settled fairly easily. Dabi's stomach turned when he saw breakfast still sitting on the table. He led Keigo to the bedroom, tucking him in before sitting on the couch with the Chief. Dabi held his wrist out, watching Kenji calibrate the location. "It only recalibrates with my DNA, so please don't attempt to adjust the settings." Dabi didn't answer, his focus stuck on a photo of Keigo on the wall. "He'll be ok. He's resilient."
"I want Endeavor dead."
A sigh escaped the Chief, "You shouldn't exactly tell those things to a Police Chief, but I understand. I was very…disturbed by the footage we recovered. I will do everything in my power to convince the Judge of a maximum sentence. It'll be a few days until the hospital can discharge him to our hands."
Dabi clenched his fists in his lap, "I should have killed him when I had the chance."
Kenji patted his shoulder, "No, you did the right thing. If Hawks had gotten to Recovery Girl any later then he wouldn't be with us right now. Speaking of, she's going to come by later and look at your wounds as well."
Dabi held his arms out, turning them to access his burns, "It's ok…I can't really feel them anymore."
"But it shouldn't be that way, accept our help. We failed you by not recognizing your identity sooner. You shouldn't have to suffer with your wounds."
"Even if you heal me…I'll just burn again the next time I use my quirk."
Kenji hesitated, folding his hands in his lap, "There is talk of removing your quirk."
Dabi looked at him with wide eyes, "Wh-what?"
"Some of the higher ups have proposed taking your quirk as penance for your crimes."
Dabi leaned back into the couch, mind racing, "How…?"
"The drug created by Kai Chisaki. We've been able to replicate it. However…I have urged my colleagues to reconsider. I believe you may run into a fair amount of trouble for betraying your old comrades, and I believe it would be a crime to take away your ability to defend yourself."
Dabi's hands trembled, the thought of losing his quirk terrified him, "What's the alternative?"
"You singly-handley eliminated two of the most dangerous villains the world has ever encountered. You deserve a chance to continue on this path. I have a few ideas that I need more time to pursue, and I should have some options by the time you go to trial." Kenji stood, straightening out his pants. "I have to get back to headquarters now. There's obviously a lot of paperwork to do after today's events."
Dabi scratched the back of his head, with a soft laugh, "Sorry…"
Kenji extended his hand, earning a confused look from Dabi, "I would like to shake your hand, and extend my thanks." Dabi stood, gripping the Chief's hand, "Touya, thank you."
His heart thudded heavily in his chest, "No one's called me that in years…"
Kenji gripped his hand tightly, "You can let Dabi go. He's protected you long enough."
Tears pricked the corners of his eyes, and he wiped them away hastily, "R-right…thank you."
Kenji looked towards the bedroom door, a solemn expression on his face, "He's going to need you, take care of him. If you need anything, don't hesitate to call me personally. Recovery Girl will be by soon." The Chief patted Touya's shoulder once more before heading to the elevators.
He went back to the kitchen and cleaned their plates. The last thing he wanted Keigo to worry about was dirty dishes. His reflection looked back at him in the water, the Chief's words echoing in his head. He let out a shaky breath before emptying the sink. There was the quietest movement behind him, and a thin pair of arms wrapped his waist, "Keigo…"
"We need to talk…"Thanks for reading! Be back soon! 3
