The Wings of Demise
Chapter Five: Loss of a Friend.
Hokkaido Forest: End of the Battle.
"I got to admit Neo," Leader growled as Vicious and Nutcase bit down on his arm blades, only for a crystal to fly and smash into their faces, "You are like a cockroach, thinking it's the king of the world, only to get a reality check when it tries to take on something bigger than it. Now don't take it as an insult, after all. I'd say all of you are brave, like the cockroach, but also like it…... I will crush you all." Neo in response quickly slashed Leader's face, before firing his Corona Beam full force at him, the dragon's crimson beams shooting out of all of his mouths, both beams narrowly missing each other. Almost instinctively, Neo summoned his barrier, and then Desghidorah did the same, the beams reflecting off both barriers and flying back at their owners, but hit each other and exploded, creating a massive explosion of bright orange and red lights. Neo took advantage of the confusion, and flew at Desghidorah, his crest glowing yellow as he grabbed Leader in his palm, his eyes starting to glow orange and his body starting to crackle with cosmic energy.
"You cannot see me middle head. You are blind!" The voice of Neo rang throughout Desghidorah's fractured mind, and Leader saw his vision grow black, and he did not see the space kaiju anymore. He then suddenly heard a whistling sound coming towards him, and the growing of Vicious and the frantic screaming of Nutcase, and he could feel the crystal pierce one of his legs. Desghidorah then summoned more fire swords as he looked up at Neo and the multitude of crystals he was firing at him, and then launched them at the crystals. Nutcase and Vicious then fired off their crimson beam as the crystals and swords collided, and Neo fired his Corona Beam, the clash becoming more powerful as the two started to drift upwards, flying higher and higher. Leader however was unmoving, listening as his other two heads fired the beams, like he was trying to figure out how to break past his seeming blindness. "This creature is a nightmare! His power…. He calls himself weak…. And yet he has completely devastated this forest. I can hear the trees, their screams…. If he did this to a forest…. What could he do to the entire planet? To Mother Earth? Mom…. I need you…. give me power…. Please…." Neo then saw the middle head look in his direction, his blank stare helping his grin become terrifying.
"Oh, I see what you did boy," Leader cackled as the stalemate between the beams continued to blast each other, as the two kaiju high up in the sky stopped going higher. "You thought you could convince part of me that I was blind? Good tactic, but I can smell you, and hear you, and TASTE YOU!" Leader's beam came out of his mouth and joined in with the other two, and soon enough, the Corona Beam started to move back to its owner, and Neo watched as the crimson beam broke through, and hit him right in the chest and face. "Oh, you poor misguided boy, I can see you now. Don't you know who I am Neo? I am a fire which burns bright forever and ever." Neo tried to punch the dragon, only for the middle head to bite onto his throat, his sight returning to him.
"I am inevitable like death," Vicious snarled as he bit down onto Neo's arm, "and come for all in the end."
"I am the one hiding under your bed, teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red," Nutcase cackled as he bit onto Neo's other arm, and all three started to discharge crimson energy into him, causing the space kaiju to roar in agony as it coursed through his body. Desghidorah then flew upwards, and started to dive bomb back towards the earth, right in the area near the dam, his entire body glowing red as flame swords buried themselves in Neo's palms.
"I AM THE WINGS OF DEMISE!" All three shouted in unison as the dragon hit the earth, and a massive explosion blew away part of the mountain, leaving Neo knocked out of his flying form, his shoulder crystals shattered, open wounds everywhere on his body, and his hands pinned to the ground with the flame swords, weakly trying to get up. Desghidorah looked at him, and then started to charge up his flame breath, and summoning several more fire swords, grinning all the while. "And now…... Your death awa-" A white Spiral Ray came out and hit the dragon in his side, knocking him on his side and blowing off part of his flesh. Junior was standing tall as he approached Desghidorah, his eyes burning in rage as he fired off his regular atomic rays one after the other, not giving the dragon a chance to fight back.
"Hey Lea," Anguirus muttered, looking at Mothra and Leo, the former trying to recharge her energy. "I got a good feeling about today. We'll win this battle, I feel it." Anguirus then roared and quickly rolled into Desghidorah, stopping him from attacking Junior, and causing all of his heads to go upwards. From the crater, Neo watched in intense pain as Anguirus and Junior punched and fought in tandem, each managing to avoid bites and flame blasts, at least until Desghidorah stomped on the ground, and opened up a volley of flames, causing Anguirus to be hit by most of them, and be knocked onto his back, and lie there with parts of his flesh burned, and bleeding. Neo growled softly, and pulling his hand through the flame sword, he reached for a nearby crystal, hoping there would be enough mana, any mana, to regenerate his shoulder crystals and heal himself. And if he had to pull his other hand through the other flame sword just to get to it? So be it.
"Leo…. hide…." Mothra groaned in pain, and flew up, ignoring her wounds and missing leg as the Shobijin rejoined her, Belvera coming late as she had watched the battle between Neo and Desghidorah. Junior tried to punch the dragon, but a quick bite to his hand stopped that, and the dragon grinned as he watched Junior fall to his knees, most of his energy expended, and fired his crimson beams point blank.
"Wait, what are these shiny things? Fireflies? OH SHIT!" Mothra's scales dropped down, and the crimson beams bounced around until they returned to Desghidorah, exploding in his faces and then allowing Mothra to fire her combination beam into one of his open wounds, creating a small geyser of blood. She continued to drop down her scales and wing lightning, watching as the dragon fired his flame breath and it too came back at him, setting parts of him alight, but then suddenly, she saw him absorbing the crimson rays into himself, and the next ones broke past the scales and…..
"MOM! NOOOOO!" Leo watched from his hiding place as the beams hit Mothra square in her chest, and sent her flying into Anguirus, and she laid on the ground, struggling to get up. Desghidorah walked over to her, and grabbed her in his mouths, all while Neo finally got his hands on the crystal, and started absorbing the mana, trying to get himself healed. He prayed it would be fast enough for him to do something to save her. Kong had gotten up as well, but he could barely move, and he reached out futilely.
"Tsk tsk tsk," Leader taunted Mothra, starting to use Vicious and Nutcase to tear her wings off, "Father was only toying with you I see, but I won't fuck around." Suddenly silk shot out of nowhere and covered parts of Desghidorah, and the resulting cosmic energy made him drop Mothra as more and more of it covered him, electrocuting the dragon. Desghidorah turned around, and Leo was there, continuing to fire out his silk.
"STAY AWAY FROM HER!" Leo rolled out of the way as Desghidorah fired a flame blast towards him, and continued to shoot his silk out, charging it more with cosmic energy and watching as it continued to shock Desghidorah, who then leaped on top of the larva, and bit into him, discharging his electricity. "AAAAHHHHHHHH!"
"LEO!" Mothra quickly ejected the Shobijin from her, and she quickly flew towards the dragon, leaving a horrified Anguirus and Junior watching, the former's stomach sinking as he realized what would happen.
"KEEP SCREAMING BOY!" Vicious laughed as he watched blood leak out of the larva's flesh, and then tossed him against a rock, leaving the larva defenseless as he prepared several flame swords and crimson beams. "I THINK THAT YOU HAVE OUTLIVED YOUR USEFULNESS! NOW DIE!"
The swords and the beams seemed to come at Leo in slow motion, almost as if time had stopped, and was delaying the inevitable. Leo remembered being in his egg for a long time, how dark it felt inside, and how he wanted to know what the world looked like outside. He remembered meeting Junior and Anguirus for the first time, and seeing his mother face to face, her beauty and her nature helping him realized he was loved. He remembered seeing Ebirah, the grumpy crustacean often trying to deny that he was interested in joining their group. He remembered his talks with Junior… how he had fallen in love with the kaiju, and how he wished he could've been like his mother, without having to lose her. He remembered meeting Kong, seeing the sadness in the ape's eyes, and seeing more of Neo, a kaiju with a complicated relationship with everyone. Most of all, Leo remembered the best of times and the worst of times, and how it all seemed like it was going to end right now. He braced for the impact of the swords and the beams.
Except they didn't hit him.
Leo watched with horror as Mothra flew right in front of him, the swords stabbing through her abdomen, and then the crimson beams…... blowing a hole right through her body. "MOM!" Mothra fell to the ground, Leo shrieking as he tried to get to her, Kong's eyes starting to water up as he saw them replaced with him and his own mother, Anguirus staring in shock as he saw his lover fall to the ground, Junior trembling as he could hear Leo's despair, and Neo slammed his fist into the ground, realizing he hadn't been fast enough in healing his wounds.
"Guardian," Vicious laughed as Desghidorah stomped over to the fallen moth, his other two heads laughing as they leered down at her, "You're only delaying the inevitable."
"He's right ya know," Nutcase followed, "All of this…. Wow talk about wasted time."
"Now why don't you do us all a favor," Leader said, opening his maw as he prepared to strike, "And di-" Mothra's stinger quickly whipped out, and she stuck it right in Vicious's eye, and started pumping all of her venom in, a look of anger and determination in her eyes.
"AAAARGGGHHHHH! WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME?" Mothra removed her stinger and watched as Desghidorah moved away from her, and Vicious started whipping around in agony, before stopping and starting to vomit up blood. "I'M, I'M BURNING UP! WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME?"
"We…. as a species…. are born with venom," Mothra coughed as she continued to watch the dragon writhing, and more blood being expelled from Vicious's mouth, and the eye starting to bubble as the venom traveled through the dragon's blood stream. "Used only for defense…... a small dose will paralyze…... most predators…. allowing the Divine Moth to fly away in time, and protect her young…. However, upping the doses…. causes things to happen…" Vicious's eye popped as she said this, and green fluid starting leaking out of parts of his face, and scales started falling to the ground. "A full dose for instance…... creates a burning sensation as the venom travels through your blood…...stream…. because the venom is making you allergic to your own blood…... then it starts to eat away slowly at each of your cells…. causing organ failure and liquification…. necrosis…. and eventually death within a few hours if you were smaller and lucky…. and the worst agony imaginable…..." Vicious threw up once again, and several lumps came out as well with the blood, causing Nutcase and Leader to look on in horror as they started to feel the same burning sensation and then turned back at Mothra, and saw her chest glowing blue. "But…. to put it in terms…. you can understand…. you're fucked."
"I'LL KI-" With a howl, Mothra's energy beam shot out, and blasted Desghidorah, and the dragon was sent flying into the dam. A crack of thunder did little to drown out the boom of the impact, and with a cloud of grey, the dragon disappeared under the water of the freed lake, which was rushing towards the group. Mothra got up, and struggling for a few seconds, she grabbed onto Leo, who seemed relieved that his mother was okay, and started flying away, and looked at Neo, who understood what she meant. He quickly turned into his flying form, and using his psychic powers, picked up the injured Kong, Junior, Anguirus, and Caesar, and flew after her, his powers beginning to strain as he kept his grip on the injured. As his eyes started to bleed, he wondered where Mothra was going, and then could see her starting to falter just a bit…...
The rain then started to fall, and Hokkaido Forest was left torn apart…... from the fires and the battle… and a broken dam. It would take a long time for Hokkaido to ever recover from the battle, and some of the scars would still remain from years to come.
Infant Island, Indonesia.
Infant Island had been recovering ever since the Marutomo Company's president had accidently driven into Godzilla's foot, thus causing it to go out of business, and thus stop development on the island. In spite of the rain and thunder, the island itself was covered in beautiful green foliage, and a river that ran through it, along with a small cave containing paintings of the residents who had once dwelled on the island, and the big great lie they had left behind, praying that Ghidorah's name would be forgotten like he did. On a stretch of jungle next to a massive mountain and several hills, next to said cave, several bolts of light came down from the sky, and struck the ground, creating several crystals glowing with mana. Neo landed on the ground, and put down the other kaiju who he had been carrying, and then almost collapsed as his eyes continued to bleed. Then in came Mothra, still carrying Leo with her remaining legs, and she almost crash landed as the two fell right near the rest of the group, Leo brushing up against a crystal as he looked back at his mother, and the Shobijin too. "Mom… we made it…. you got him…. You were amazing! Mom…... MOM?" Mothra struggled to stand up….and then collapsed as Leo went to her, a panicked look in his eyes. "Mom…. Oh no…. you gotta get up… mom… these crystals… they can heal…. You…. Mom? Please…. Get up…." Anguirus quickly ran over to Mothra after he had touched one of the crystals, absorbing its mana to heal himself. Both Leo and Anguirus stood next to her as she tried to get up once again, only to collapse.
"L-Leo, I-I-It's too…. late for me…." Mothra crawled up to her son and lover, and tried to nuzzle their heads. "I…. don't…... have… much… time left…"
"No, Mom…. Damn it! Don't talk like that! I'll help... help… you…. You'll…. Be okay…." Leo's voice started to tremble.
"Oh no… no… not again… please… not again…" Kong was muttering under his breath as he stood there frozen, the rain and thunder and a child and their parent on an island reminding him of the day he lost his own parents…...and was now witnessing it again…...
"I…. was…. weak…. I was too slow. I…. failed everyone." Neo dug his claws into his hand, cutting into his flesh, and looked down, his red eyes starting to tear up just a bit. Junior only stared in silence as he finished healing himself, and walked over, going next to Leo and Anguirus.
"Lea…. I'm here… we're all here," Anguirus sniffled as he tried to help her stand, "You…. I… We…... I love you…..." Inside of his head however, all he could think about was their conversation on Monster Island, and how he had prayed it wouldn't come true. "I…. I'm not…... I'm…. sorry…."
"It's…...okay…. Guirus…. I… know… you will… take care of my…. boys…" Junior's heart fluttered at this, hearing her say that word and thinking back to his own mother, when she left him…... and how he was powerless to stop it…. "Please… don't…. give… up…. I believe…. I believe… you all can defeat…. Bagan…." Mothra started to gasp a little as she lay on the ground in front of her son, who was starting to panic now.
"Mom…. No… you can't go…. You can't leave me…. You can't leave us…. Please… mom…. I…. I…." The Shobijin stood farther away, Moll and Lora trembling as they watched their master…. their friend's life ebb away, and Belvera started to panic, and back away. "I… can't…. I…. Mom…... please…." Mothra's antennae then started glow a golden yellow, and she put her head against Leo's, and the energy started to transfer into him, the rest of his wounds healing as he gasped. "I…. these…. No…. Mom…"
The New Guardian of Earth had been selected.
"My boy…... my handsome…. boy…. I lov… I lov… I…" The blue glow in Mothra's eyes started to flicker, before fading away entirely, and her raised head gently fell to the ground, her body going limp. She did not move for a few more seconds, before her body started to glow with a faint yellow outline, becoming transparent and then turning into a golden dust which flew up in the skies above, and then vanished completely, leaving the rest of the kaiju there…... processing the loss of their friend…. their lover…... their mother…
Leo started to tremble and then an agonized cry came out of him as the larva screamed into the air in a mixture of rage and sorrow.
The first of them had fallen.
The Otherworld.
The first thing that caught Mothra's attention was the white everywhere, from top to bottom, as if she was in a void. The second thing that caught her attention was that her body was completely healed, like nothing had happened to her during the battle. She started to walk forwards just a bit, before taking off and flying forwards, seeing if there was anything in this world. All she could see was endless white, no other being there, and nothing of note. "I…... died…... Then this must be…. The Otherworld." If Zenith was a place where most believed that truly wicked kaiju and humans like dictators, mass murderers, and much worse would go upon death, then the Otherworld would be its polar opposite, a place where kaiju and humans who were not truly wicked, willing to change themselves for the better, or who were genuinely good would go. "Is anyone there?" Mothra called out, not knowing if anyone was there or would answer, and hoped to find some way to look back on Earth.
"Hello young lass, what are ya doin here?" A voice with a strange accent caught Mothra's attention, and she turned around, and saw what appeared to be an oversized Tyrannosaur looking at her. However unlike a typical Tyrannosaur, his arms were much longer and ended in four digits as opposed to two, his tail seemed thicker and more taut, his scales were that of a faint blue blending in with a darker blue with a single yellow stripe running down from his eyes to his tail on both sides of his body, his legs appearing to be muscular enough for him to not only run extremely fast but to also give a wicked kick if he could with his large feet, and finally his head having somewhat larger snout, red eyes, and several feathers coming out of the back of his head.
"You're…. Gorosaurus…" Mothra's eyes widened in amazement, and the dinosaur looked at her in surprise.
"Aye young lass. Me and the other Guardians have been here for years, ever since the Cataclysm. What's yer name? Might as well get acquainted." Gorosaurus looked at her, his red eyes seeming friendly.
"I'm Mothra Lea…. Daughter of Mothra Gaia, or Gigamoth, sister to Battra, and the mother of Mothra Leo, the current Guardian of Earth." Gorosaurus suddenly frowned when he heard this, and he walked up to the moth, looking her over.
"Oh no…. not both of her wee barin. This is…. terrible…" The dinosaur sighed sadly, and then looked back into Mothra's face, before telling her one more thing. "There are others here missy, keep flyin' that way, and you will meet them." Mothra turned around to where he was gesturing, and in the middle of the whitness, she saw a black orb floating in mid-air, and what appeared to be a stone statue standing with his back to it, silent. Mothra started to fly over, and then noticed something else above her, its shadow becoming smaller as it landed in front of her. It was a Radon Tribe member, and one that Mothra was all too familiar with from Junior's memories.
"Well, a newcomer eh? Name's Rodan. Got it memorized?" Rodan walked up to her on all fours, gazing at her with a slight grin on his beak. "You were helping out my little bro, right? Before…."
"You're… You're just a boy …." Mothra said in surprise, "You had your full life ahead of you, and… you shouldn't be here…."
"Hey, that's life," Rodan replied as two more figures came out of the white, "And technically, giving me a few more weeks, I would've been an adult. Oh well. His life came first. He's doing fine… right?" Rodan stopped grinning at this, and turned to the dark orb, and went up to it, looking in. Mothra was then joined by a dinosaur who walked on all fours, appearing to be round and chubby with thick muscular legs and a short tail, with red and brown scales that almost looked like magma and two ear-like flaps with a short snout and translucent horn on top of his head. The other dino that joined walked on two legs and had brown scales, with a long tail, a head shaped with two curving horns on the sides and one in the middle of his nose.
"Baragon…... Gomora…..." Mothra looked on in amazement as she saw the ghosts of the past, the two almost looking at her with a mixture of pride and warmness.
"Hullo Miss. Gaia's daughter, right? I hate that we had to meet like this," Baragon politely and somewhat shyly greeted Mothra.
"It is indeed my old friend." Gomora walked over to Mothra, and inspected her, sighing as he saw how young she was compared to them. "You were brave like her, and you fought to the very last like her."
"Is my mother here?" Mothra asked the Guardians this, and the three then backed away as Mothra turned around to a bright light that seemed to cut through the white void, and saw a massive Divine Moth flying towards her, along with one who was more around her size, his red eyes contrasting with the other moth's blue eyes, much like Mothra's. She stood there in amazement, before she said, "Battra? You're here too…. I thought…. I thought…..."
"Hey sis," Battra solemnly replied, "You'd thought I'd be in Zenith, right? Well the thing is…. Daimajin saw it fit to argue on my behalf, and say that I wasn't in the right mind when I… attacked the humans. My heart was pure, and I was let in…... but I still shouldn't have done that…. What happened to me back on Earth when we fought Godzilla, it was my own fault Mothra, not yours, not Belvera's, not-" Battra was cut off when Mothra flew up to him and wrapped her wings around him, gently sobbing as the other Divine Moth came closer, and then motioned to Mothra. "Well…. There's someone here you should meet sis…. She's been wanting to see you for a long time…. Just not like this… you ready Mom?" Gaia looked like she did in Mothra's memories, and yet after looking at her while letting Battra go, she felt as if she didn't know her.
"Mother? I'm sorry…. I screwed up…." Mothra almost knelt down in front of Gaia, like she was begging for forgiveness. "I was sloppy, I should've been faster…. My Leo…... My Gurius…. My friends…. Neo…. I let them all down…." Gaia moved up to Mothra, and gently nuzzled her daughter as she continued to sob.
"Lea…. My beautiful girl…. You did the best you could, and you fought to the bitter end. You did it to save your son and to save your allies. He is still alive…. And while I wish that we could've seen each other not in this way, not this soon, you were a good Guardian of Earth." Mothra continued to sob softly, before she let her mother go, and looked up at her again.
"Mother…. I wish I could know you better…. And I wish you could've seen me with my friends, and my love, and my boy…. Leo and Junior could've…... They could've met more of us….."
"Junior and Leo huh?" Battra then came next to Mothra, and turned her attention to the dark orb. "And Anguirus was it? Never took you to be willing to settle down, but in that case, there's two others who'd like to talk with you. One of them our mom knows, but the other… well…. Let's just say he's the reason I'm here."
"Go with him my Lea, we can catch up later," Gaia beckoned her children, the rest of the Guardians of Earth watching as the two flew over to the orb. Mothra continued to fly, and then gasped when she saw an Angillas Tribe member step out from behind it, who was twice the size of Anguirus and covered in ancient battle scars, and then…... Godzilla himself…. not changed from the last time she saw him good and well in Junior's memories. Mothra didn't know what to say, until the Angillas spoke first.
"How has my little Gurius been? I know about the two of you, and I can see that you loved him very much."
"Baragurius," Mothra muttered before she composed herself and answered, "He is doing fine, but he got hurt battling Bagan, and I'm afraid my death will make him hurt even more…... but I think he will be okay in the end…. I just miss him terribly…. I didn't want to leave him behind like that…... I didn't want to leave behind my Leo…"
"I didn't want to leave him either…." Baragurius sighed, "But I had a choice to pick between him and me, and I chose him, no questions asked. I wanted my grandson to live, so he could have a full life."
"…...So did I for my Leo….." Mothra turned away from the dinosaur and turned to face Godzilla, the two staring at each other for the longest time. Mothra wasn't sure what to say to him, since the last time they had seen each other they had fought, and it had ended in the death of Battra. She didn't have to remain silent for very long however.
"…Mothra…. I know I don't deserve your forgiveness…... My anger…. My hatred…. It got the better of me…. And I let it, and because of that…... I took your family away from you…. I hurt innocent humans… because I hated myself so much… that's why my father isn't here… because of what I did to him… I am sorry…"
"Godzilla… I went through Junior's memories…... and I saw that you changed for the better… I sensed there was good in you… and I was worried that you'd never let go of your anger and hatred… Your son misses you dearly… and he….. he….." Mothra couldn't finish what she was saying, and fully broke down… the stress making her sob harder than ever into Godzilla's chest... "He… It's not fair… But… He's doing okay… He's doing okay… He has my Leo with him… My Gurius… Kong…" Godzilla then brought Mothra into a hug, the two broken kaiju silently looking at each other… the two parents thinking about their children…. The two orphans silently forgiving each other for what they did to each other….
Daimajin silently looked on… his heart heavy with sorrow. He wished he could do something…... anything for these souls here in the Otherworld… Once long ago he could leave freely to the Earth and on rare occasions after consulting with Mother Earth, bring life back temporarily to the souls trapped in here so they could finish their unfinished business and move on even deeper into the Otherworld… joining all of their loved ones… And once in a while… she and he would combine their power to bring one back to life forever, giving them a second chance…
But that was when he had believers to anchor him to the Earth.
As far as he knew, there were no more… and his siblings were down there too, one having tried to valiantly fight Desghidorah.
The dark orb would let them see what was going on, but all they could do was observe and not interfere.
However, the god believed that there was still some form of light in spite of this, and silently… he held out his hand, and only said one thing that would go unheard to the kaiju on Earth.
"Even when there is death… there will always be hope."
And Leo was that hope.
Author's Note: Hey everyone, it's me again, and well... I found this chapter to be really hard to write. It's one thing to kill off a character because the story needs it... but killing off someone like Mothra takes nerves of steel to do so... She has died before in the films yes... but only two of those times really worked for me, them being KOTM and the other being RoM, and so I hoped to invoke the sadness of those deaths with this one. From this point on, the story will get darker, and yet like the last line hints... there will be hope within the darkness as we see Leo ascend to fulfill his potential, and he and Junior's relationship changes as they go on. Here is the voice cast, with no new changes.
