Full Summary:
What should have been a normal day at the movies takes a terrifying turn for Buck when someone blocks the exits and sets the theater ablaze. Will Buck make it out alive? Will the arsonist be caught? And how does the 118, who are on duty, react to learning that Buck is in the theater?
The Movie Theater:
Buck had the day off but Eddie had to work and Chris was at school. Eddie had taken to work because someone had called out on 'B' shift and Eddie had taken the opportunity to pick up a shift. So, while everyone was away for the day, Buck dealt with a few errands and then decided that he was going to have fun for the day. He messaged Eddie to let him know that he was headed to the local theater for the rest of the day. He wanted to have a little 'Buck' time before he had to be home for the rest of the night. Eddie texted back and told him that the new 'Fast & Furious' movie was in theaters and he should go see that. Buck thanked him for the recommendation and headed for the theater. As he parked, he saw something that made his skin start to get goosebumps.
He knew the crew shouldn't be close to the theater that people were going in and out of. He took a picture and sent it to Eddie asking if they could do something about it. As he was waiting in line to get tickets, he got a reply back saying Athena was on it and that the construction crew would get a warning to move away from the theater. *Cranes were not supposed to be in the vicinity of a movie theater, especially if there were no permits for it. People needed to know that their lives could be in danger. He pocketed his phone and paid for the ticket then went to get in line for the snacks. He was thinking about getting popcorn when another text came in. He pulled his phone out and noticed that Athena had messaged him. She let him know that the crane crew would be going home until they got the permits to work around functioning buildings and she wished him a good day.
He pocketed his phone once more and stepped up to the counter to get his snacks. He got a large drink, some small candy snacks and a hotdog. He wasn't really in the mood for some popcorn anymore. When his snacks were handed over to him, he headed for the movie and found a seat that he liked. He'd always been partial to siting up in the back of the theater as it had better view. But Eddie & Chris liked to sit in the middle, so he always allowed it. This time he was alone and was sitting in the back. Besides, there were always speakers at the back and you could get the best experience. So he sat in the middle seat of the back row and got comfortable. He ate his hotdog waiting for the movie to start. He was sipping on his soda but hadn't even made a dent in it. He would wait for the candy till later on in the movie. He'd already put his phone on airplane mode as well so that it wouldn't bother him or anyone else during the movie. As the trailers for different shows began playing, he wondered how much longer he could stand not being a firefighter anymore. He knew that he'd committed to being a lifeguard for now, but the plan was to always get back to firefighting. For now, he just put that out of his head and began to pay attention to what was on the screen.

Eddie was sitting on the couch of the firehouse when Athena walked in. Bobby must have seen her cause he called out to her. She walked up the stairs and into the kitchen area.
"Hey, Athena, what brings you by?" Hen asked.
"I just came to see if lunch was on the table yet. And to give an update on the Crane situation."
"Yeah, did you happen to see Buck when you went by the Crane sight?" Chimney asked.
"No, but I did see his jeep in the theater parking lot; which is probably how he saw the Crane crew to begin with. The foreman did not have the proper permit to be using the Crane so they are down for at least a week until they get the permit. I thought I'd come over and let Eddie know so that he could relay it to him when he got out of the theater."
"Dually noted…I sent him to see the new 'Fast & Furious' movie. He'll let me know if we need to rent it at a later date."
"I thought he was doing errands on his day off." Bobby stated.
"He did them and then decided he needed a little 'Buck' time. He wanted some suggestions on any movies and I told him what I thought he might like."
"How very generous of you to let your husband go see the movie the both of you want to watch together."
"I didn't really want to see it in theaters anyways. Too hyped up even for the time it came out."
"I know what you mean. Karen really wants to go see it but I don't want to pay the price for the tickets and the snacks. At least this way, he'll be able to tell us if it's any good."
"Exactly my thinking."

Buck was sitting in his seat nonchalantly snacking and drinking his soda. He was watching the movie with intent. It was actually pretty good; well worth the wait after everything that had happened in the world. He was paying attention to the movie and not much else. He'd put his phone on 'Airplane Mode' so that he wouldn't be disturbed. So when an explosion from the movie made him jump, he wasn't surprised. What he was surprised at was the smoke that seemed to be filling the small theater. Other people had started to notice it too. He stood up from where he was sitting and looked into the projector booth to see if the attendant also saw the booth, but found that he couldn't see inside of it, which was strange to say the least.
Buck turned back towards the screen and noticed that others had noticed the smoke and were starting to move. Someone came running back from where the main doors were located. Buck wandered down the steps towards him and caught the last of what he was saying. The doors were locked and it felt like they had been bolted from the outside, trapping everyone inside. Someone headed for the emergency door to see if they could open that door. They were able to open it, but just a little. The chain bolting the door shut, told them all they needed to know. There were kids in the theater. To keep them calm, they put all the kids at the highest point. At the moment, the smoke was only on the lower area of the theater; it hadn't yet reached the higher area. But Buck knew that eventually, all smoke rises.
As he pulled his phone from his pocket to seek help, an echoing 'BOOM' could be heard throughout the theater. It was the smallest in the city and only locals knew where to find it. He knew they were in danger. He screamed at everyone to get down before he was thrown from his feet and everything went black.

A call came in for a downtown movie theater and Eddie's heart leapt into his throat. He prayed it had nothing to do with the theater that Buck was attending but feared that it was. Bobby looked at Eddie as they raced to the scene; he knew what he was thinking. Eddie was dreading it being the theater that Buck was at; they all were. He kept looking at his phone, hoping that Buck would call and say that he was okay. But that call never came in and as they pulled up to the scene, the look on Bobby's face said it all.
Eddie exited the truck and saw what lay in front of him. The crane that had been standing that morning was now lying on top of the small theater. Crews were working on the crane to get it off the building and to get to the people trapped inside. Sgt. Athena Grant was directing traffic and civilians away from the building when she noticed her husband. She passed her duties onto a patrol officer near her and headed over to the 118.
"Bobby, are you guys okay?"
"Yeah…isn't this the crane that Buck mentioned earlier?"
"It is. And it's a good thing the work was ended or there would be a lot more casualties. Have you heard anything from Buck?"
"No, nothing. We aren't even sure if he was in the building when it happened. Eddie's been on the phone trying to contact him since we got the call. He hasn't been able to get through to him."
"That could mean anything. Doesn't Buck keep his phone on 'Airplane Mode' while in a theater anyways? Maybe he hasn't taken it off that mode yet."
"We're praying he isn't inside."
"That'll be a Maddie call nobody want to make."
"Exactly! Alright, everybody get to work. We need to get the crane off the building and get to the people stuck inside. Hen, Chimney, get to looking for another way into the building. There has to be side doors to the theater so that people can exit in case of an emergency. Eddie…Eddie…"
"Yes Cap?"
"You're staying with me. We're gonna try and get into the building from the front. While the other teams work on the crane, we can try and get people out of the front of the building. You need to keep busy. There's no need in worrying until we know if he was inside the building or not."
"Got it Cap!"
The team set to work. Eddie stayed next to Bobby while Hen and Chimney ran around the side of the building opposite the crane to see if they could get into the building. They saw the door, but what they saw next made them believe that this wasn't an accident. They looked at each other before radioing Bobby to let them know what they had found.

Buck woke slowly. Someone was crouched down beside him and he could feel a hand on his neck. He didn't overreact because he knew the person was just trying to make sure he was okay. He wished Eddie was there but knew that he probably wasn't. He opened his eyes slowly and blinked out the black spots that hovered over his vision. The man checking on him was crouched down in front of him and when he saw Buck awake, he gave him a smile and a hand to help him get up.
"Thought we lost you there for a minute."
"How long was I out of it?"
"Only a couple minutes. Everyone is still trying to come around. I'm not sure what happened on the outside, but I don't think it was a bomb. None of us would be here if it was."
"That is a good point. And I'd know, I've been in a bombing before. What happened here sounded like something fell on top of the theater."
"Probably the crane that was outside the theater when we all came in. That construction site was shut down three weeks ago for not having permits. They were supposed to be permanently shut down. I'm not sure how they managed to get back to work so soon."
"Shut down you say; that's good to know. I'm Buck by the way. What's your name?"
"I'm Jerry. I'm one of the lawyers that are trying to get the construction site shut down for good. They are cutting too many corners and not paying their workers to do the work they were paid to do. They have unlicensed people working there and…well, it's a shit show if there ever were one."
"Nice to meet you Jerry. Are the kids okay?"
"Yes, the respective parents are making sure they don't get too frightened. We should probably try to get out of here. I heard sirens pulling up. Rescue should be starting to try and get us out of here."
"My family is probably out there trying to get in here. My husband works for the 118 Firehouse. I used to but an injury sidelined me. Now, I'm a Lifeguard. I will eventually get back to being a firefighter."
"Good to know that there are good men and women out there trying to get in here. Do they know you are here?"
"Probably; but my phone was on Airplane Mode for the movie and I was pulling it out of my pocket when I was thrown against the wall. Now I don't know where it is."
"Yeah, a lot of phones got smashed in the ensuing chaos. You sit there while I go round up the last unidentified phones. We had a few people not make it. But we were able to move them out of sight of the kids."
"Good to know. And thank you for this."
"It was the least I could do. My daughter was one of the kids you moved up to the top of the seats. If you hadn't moved her, she'd have been down here with me and I don't know what kind of state she would have been in."
They stopped talking as he disappeared somewhere and Buck took a mental note of his injuries. Luckily, he doesn't think he has a concussion or a head injury but he can feel a couple broken ribs from where he hit the wall. And his wrist is twisted in a not-so-nice position which made him think it was either fractured or broken. He eyed his legs, moved his toes in his shoes and stretched his back. He didn't feel like anything else hurt and his legs moved perfectly fine. As he was finishing assessing his injuries, Jerry came back with the phones. When Buck saw his, he grabbed at it, but hope faded from his eyes when he saw that the screen was completely smashed and he couldn't even turn the device on.
"Sorry, doesn't look like I'm going to be able to call anyone anytime soon. My phone is beyond dead."
"Yours isn't the only one. A lot of our phones were smashed when we were thrown to the floor when whatever it was fell."
"Is there any way we can get the side door open?"
"No, unfortunately someone already tried getting in that way and it has been chained from the outside and they said they were going to get something to cut the chain and try and get us out. You should stay sitting down. There's blood coming from the back of your head from where you hit the wall."
"Good to know. And thank you. No need to get more inured for no reason."
"I'll be back, I need to go see if my daughter is doing okay. She's on the Autism spectrum and things like this can really get her going. We were at the movies to try and calm her down. She really likes this movie saga."
"At least you are keeping her on your mind."
"She's everything to me. It's just me and her. Her mom died giving birth to our son, who also didn't make it. I'll go to hell and back for her. Do you have any kids?"
"I have a step-son but I treat him just like my kid. My husband and I were thinking about adopting soon, but haven't settled on a boy or a girl just yet."
"Well, I think you should get a girl. Like I said, I'd do anything for my daughter, even if it means taking time out of work to go see a movie in the middle of the day with her. Speaking of, if you don't mind, I'm gonna go check on her like I said I was a few minutes ago. I need you to stay awake so I'll leave the phones here to see if you can get any of them working. Concussions can be serious."
"Dually noted. I'll see if I can figure anything out with the phones. Tell your daughter that she's being brave."
"Will do. I'll be back in about ten minutes."
Jerry went off to the top of the theater seats to check on his daughter and to make sure the rest of the kids were handling everything alright. Buck took the phones, including his and started looking at how he may be able to get the phones to work, even if he had to configure out a new way to do so. But even in his sluggish mind, he could tell that there wasn't going to be the possibility of getting any of the phones to work, not even his. As he worked that out in his head, a noise came from above. Everyone stopped what they were doing and listened.
Jerry yelled for Buck to move right at the same time the crane came crashing through the ceiling. Buck blacked out as soon as the crane hit the floor. He wasn't exactly sure if he'd been hit by the thing, but it did kick up a whole lot of dust. The last thing he heard was yelling from outside, as if the rescuers realized that they had made the whole thing a lot worse for those stuck inside the small room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~911~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~911~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bobby and Eddie had just cleared the building when a shout came from the crew that was working on the crane. Both looked on in horror as the crane slipped farther into the building, crashing its way through the roof. Screaming could be heard from inside the building as those trapped inside scrambled to get out of the way. Eddie thought he heard someone scream a familiar name, but maybe it was just his mind playing tricks on him. Bobby radioed the rest of his team and they all called out that they were safe. Neither had time to adjust to the new reality as crews were now scrambling up to the roof of the building to try and rescue the victims from that angle.
The 118 were among those on the roof and now looking down into the theater from the top. What they saw, stopped them in their tracks and Eddie hit his knees. There, right in front of him and just inches from where the crane had landed, lay Buck. He was unconscious and didn't look to be moving. Eddie's world grew small and all he saw was his husband lying in a heap in the middle of the chaos. As the teams watched, a man started scrambling over the debris towards Buck. When the man reached him and reached for his neck to see if he was alive, Eddie held a breath. He wasn't the only one. The whole of the 118 held their breath in anticipation of what the answer would be.
The man bent down over Buck and cupped his neck searching for a pulse. When he found one, he hung his head and let out his breath. He looked up at the rescuers and held up a thumb, letting them all know that Buck was alive. They had to get into the building and fast. Bobby yelled to the man that they were sending men down into the room to try and get everyone out. The man held his thumb up to let them know that they had been heard. Before he could motion for some kind of radio, Hen was being lowered into the room with her medical kit to keep Buck from moving and see if anyone else needed help.
When Hen unclicked from the rope and headed for the man and Buck, she assessed the room. Most of the people were out of harm's way and up where they hadn't been injured from the crane falling deeper into the building. The man reached out his hand as Hen moved over the last bit of crane separating her from Buck.
"Hi, I'm Jerry. This is Buck. He was sitting against the wall when the crane came through the roof."
"Hi, Jerry, I'm Firefighter Wilson. I know who Buck is. He is married to a coworker of mine. Did he ever lose consciousness in the initial collapse?"
"Yes, but then again we all did. When the initial collapse happened, it was like a bomb going off. Buck hit the wall, and I told him not to get up to move around a bit because I could tell that he had some kind of head wound and I didn't want it to get worse. He was sitting in the same spot he is now when the crane fell through the roof. I'm assuming that crane was the start of all our problems?"
"Yes, we've got officers working on trying to find the foreman to the sit across the street to get him to tell us what could have gone wrong. Let me assess Buck and then I'll get to the rest of you guys to see how everyone is doing."
"Can I have your radio, Firefighter Wilson?"
"Can I ask what for?"
"I need to talk to whichever cop is in charge out there, let her know the whole story of that construction site. Let her know that they have been shut down before."
"Here, take my portable one. And get out of the way of falling debris. My captain's name is Capt. Nash. You can ask for him and he'll put in contact with the responding officers who are looking into the construction site."
"Thankyou Firefighter Wilson."
"No problem. Excuse me."
Hen turned towards Buck to assess his injuries. She put a neck brace on him to keep him as stable as possible for the move to first the back board and then the rescue basket. It was the only way to get Buck out of the building without injuring him some more. As she was moving him to the backboard, Jerry came back to help.
"I spoke with a Sgt. Grant and told her everything I knew about the construction site. She said she would appreciate the help as soon as I was out of here. I've been trying to get that place shut down for months. Too many corners being cut. Do you need any help?"
"Buck is starting to wake up. I need you to keep him as still as possible. They are lowering the rescue basket now and we need to get him onto a backboard and into the basket. It's the only way to safely remove him from the building."
"Can he have company in the basket?"
"Company as in you?"
"No, but my daughter is on the Autism Spectrum and she needs to be out of the building sooner than later. I would like her to accompany him if possible. And she can keep him from moving too much."
"Let me ask my captain. He may say no, so don't expect much."
Hen moved away from Buck as Jerry continued to keep him calm. When she came back, Buck was looking at her. She told Jerry to go get his daughter. That it was approved by her captain to put the little girl in the basket with Buck. When Buck heard that, he knew he'd need to stay as still as possible so the little girls didn't fall out as they were being lifted out of the building.
"Hey, Hen. How's it going?"
"How's it going? I'm going to chalk that up to your head wound. We'll get you out of here and to a hospital and then we will be having a talk about your impromptu 'Buck time'."
"Eddie told you guys about that huh?"
"You should have just stayed home Buck."
"Don't I know it. One of the worst days ever. But I made a new friend."
"You always make new friends."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~911~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~911~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buck woke slowly. He looked around the hospital room that he'd been situated into. Nobody was in the room with him, but he wasn't expecting them to be. He knew the doctors were making everyone, including Eddie, stay in the waiting room for now. Nobody was ever allowed into a patient's recovery room. He breathed deeply before remembering the day's events. He remembered doing errands early on in the day, going to the theater to watch the new Fast & Furious movie and also remembered the subsequent explosion like collapse that had happened. He knew that they had been trapped inside the small theater because of the locked door and that the door to the concession area hadn't been able to be opened due to the doors being bent so bad that even rescue couldn't get in.
He remembered the guy Jerry telling him about the construction site with the crane that had eventually come crashing down onto the theater as they were all watching the movie. He remembered the smoke and then the subsequent crash as the crane came through the roof. And he remembered waking up in the theater and looking at Hen from the ground. But anything after that moment was a blur. He didn't remember even being put into the ambulance. He didn't know if everyone had gotten out or if Jerry and his daughter were alright. All those things were swirling in his head when his doctor walked into the room with Eddie behind him. Maddie wasn't there this time. She'd always been there when he woke in the hospital but understood why it was just Eddie this time. He looked at the doctor as Eddie came over to his bedside and took his hand. All the doctor did was read the chart and say that he was happy to see him awake and that he would be moved to his own room in about an hour.
As the doctor left, he looked to Eddie for some clarification on what he obviously didn't remember.
"What happened in the ambulance. I don't remember anything after being lifted out of the roof."
"Jerry's daughter rode with you in the ambulance and I took care of her as her father was lifted out and Chimney and Hen took care of you. I wasn't allowed within the ambulance as you were brought to the hospital. Bobby made me ride in the firetruck. We had to take the truck back to the house before we could come here. Hen and Chimney stayed with you and Maddie is also in the waiting room. She understood that I needed to see you first. I'll tell you what I know. Hen & Chim didn't really get into it much."
"Are Jerry and his daughter okay? He was very nice to me in the theater."
"Yes, they are okay as are the others that I was told you helped save. Jerry and his daughter are actually in the waiting room. Jerry has been helping Athena with the investigation seeing as he's been trying to get the construction shut down for I think a year."
"Yeah, he told me the same thing in the theater. I think he was trying to keep me awake. So tell me what happened so I can piece the puzzle together in my head."
"Alright, but it may be a long one as I'm getting this second hand. So bear with me please."
Eddie started off with telling him what Chim had told him when they'd all gotten to the hospital. Buck had lost consciousness once again once within the ambulance. They knew it was a severe concussion and had sped the entire way to the hospital. Once at the hospital, the doctors had taken over. Maddie was already in the waiting room with May & Josh. Buck had been raced into surgery as the x-ray had showed major internal bleeding, probably from when he'd been thrown into the wall during the initial collapse. They'd been able to fix the damage and hadn't needed to remove any vital organs, thankfully. He'd been in surgery for almost six hours and they'd thought the worst at first. Of course, he'd had longer surgeries, but when the doctor had come out and told them all that he had survived the surgery, they'd all let out a collective sigh for the breath that they'd all been holding.
"You scared me again, Evan. You have to stop scaring me. I don't think my heart can take it."
"You weren't the only one scared. It was supposed to be a nice day at the movies. But of course the fire happened and then the collapse. If I hadn't seen the smoke before the collapse I don't think half the people in the theater would have survived."
"What smoke? Nobody said anything about smoke."
"Jerry didn't mention it to you?"
"No, but he could have forgotten about it in the melee of things that happened afterwards."
"Yeah, but you might want to mention it to Bobby so that the Arson Department can take a look at it."
"I will, but you need to get some rest. I'll be there when you wake in your permanent room for now."
Buck listened to Eddie and got a little more comfortable, well as much as he could in a hospital bed, and promptly let his eyes droop close. He knew his family would be there for him when he woke again. And he knew that he probably wouldn't be going back to work any time soon. That was fine with him. That meant more time at home with Christopher. Eddie watched Buck sleep for a few more minutes before leaving the room to find Athena and Bobby and let him know what Buck needed just told him. If someone had set fire to the theater, that would explain the blocked exit doors. It would explain a lot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~911~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~911~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Buck let Eddie push the wheelchair out of the hospital over three weeks later. He was finally going home. He didn't bother himself with whatever investigation was still ongoing as he knew that he needed time to recover in order to get back to work. He didn't mind either. In his time in the hospital, he and Eddie had finally made a decision on the adoption. They agreed that they couldn't take on an infant at the moment, but taking on an older kid might be a good idea. There were tons of kids in Foster Care that needed a home and someone to love him. With the help of Hen & Karen, they'd applied to become Foster Parents with the option to adopt the kid if necessary. It was something Hen & Karen had been trying to do as well, though they already had a couple kids that they had taken in and were reunited with the parents after a few months.
They wouldn't be able to get a kid until Buck was fully healed but at least they knew that they could get a kid. They'd spoken to the rest of their family and had been told that they deserved to have as much family as possible. Maddie had been all for Buck getting his family. He'd always been good with kids and everyone knew it. He was excited to be able to take care of another kid. He and Eddie had spoken with Chris about it, and though the kid had been hesitant at first, he remembered how Denny felt when his moms had had Nia living with him. He had told his fathers that he couldn't wait to have a little sibling. To which both had told him that the kid they were allowed to care for may actually be older than him. He said that didn't matter as long as they got along and the kids didn't try and bully him.
So, as Eddie pulled into the driveway, he knew that they would be okay. It would take a couple weeks for him to get back on his feet, but he had his family supporting him the whole way. He couldn't wait to get back to work and get back to the important things in life. He knew that there would be some harsh roads ahead, but they would deal with those roads together. Buck smiled as Eddie helped him out of the truck and into the house where Chris and the rest of his family was waiting. Of course, any hospital discharge issued a family BBQ and Bobby was already manning the BBQ when they walked into the house. Eddie placed Buck's bag on the floor next to the door before helping him sit down on the couch. For the first week out of the hospital, didn't matter which time it was, Buck didn't really ever move from the couch.
Evan Buckley was content to let his family hover for now. In a week, he'd be ready to be unburdened by his family. He'd be ready to get back to some normalcy. And he knew everyone else would be as well. Chris climbed up next to him and placed his head on his shoulder as Abuelita walked in to give them some food. She placed her hand on Buck's face and looked at him in the way only a grandmother could. She was glad he was okay, this time. But even she knew that one day, he wouldn't come out of his injuries just as okay as he did all the other times. She was praying that that day never came for the Diaz-Buckley family. As she walked back outside, Chris started telling Buck about everything he'd missed since the accident and his hospitalization. Buck was content to just listen.
AN: alright, I know this took a little longer than I expected but I feel good about the chapter. Next time, they may have that Foster child. Also, I kinda forgot how I wanted to hurt Buck in this chapter and so that is the reason it is a lot shorter than most of my chapters. Hope you enjoy!
*Don't know if this is true or not, but for the story it is.
*Haven't actually seen Fast 9 yet, but I've heard it is very good.
