Your Pain is My Pain
Chapter 27
Victoria watched in amused silence as the pathetic human Bella Swan struggled against her restraints. It was rather amusing watching something so weak attempt escape from her bonds, and to be completely unsuccessful at it. Not that she would be, as she made sure she wouldn't be able to escape the ropes she tied her up with. As Bella continued to struggle, stupidly exerting her energy in trying to free herself, Victoria took the time to look at their surroundings, taking in how dark and bleak it was. And yet, it was also nice to be in.
After abducting Bella from her bedroom, she had taken off with her in the night, taking her to a remote location, one that lay forgotten. It was an old abandoned mine in a valley near the mountains, and they were in its shaft. Because it was forgotten about, it was hard to find, thus making it the perfect spot for to her not only kill the pathetic human but leave her body to rot and never be found. And maybe, just maybe, after enough time had gone by, she'd be gracious enough to dump her remains where they would be found, and she could watch as people grieved over the poor excuse of a person.
Coming out of her musings, the redhaired vampire turned to look at the brunette and said, "Stop struggling; it won't help you."
Bella ignored her, continuing to struggle in her bonds until finally letting out a huff, leaning against the stone wall and ignoring how the ropes were beginning to cut into her skin. Looking up at the vengeful redhead, she asked, "Why are you doing this?"
"You know why I'm doing this, Swan. Don't act stupid, even if you really are."
"Fine, but it isn't worth all of what you're doing."
Suddenly in front of her, Bella blinked in surprise as Victoria was nearly nose to nose with her, her red eyes blazing with rage as she hissed, "Yes, it is! Edward Cullen killed James. He killed my mate, the person I loved the most in this world, and he took him from me. It's only fitting that I kill his precious person in return. An eye for an eye, you might say. After all, it's only fair."
The redhead stood up from where she was crouched in front of Bella, and walked away back to where she was originally stationed. Looking back at the human, she continued, "It is rather ridiculous, though, that he would just leave his mate vulnerable. However, it makes it easier for me, even with the unwanted interference of those wolves you surround yourself with. I still can't believe you are with one of them, effectively cheating on Cullen. Some mate you are, Bella."
Bella stared at Victoria for a moment in confusion before realization dawned on her. Victoria didn't know that she wasn't Edward's mate and was still assuming that she was. She had no idea that she was never his mate and that her quest for revenge was void. She needed to tell her the truth, and while the thought of doing so terrified her—she didn't know how'd she react, after all—she knew she had to tell her. Taking a deep breath, Bella replied, "I'm not Edward's mate."
Seeing the confused expression on the redhaired vampire's face, Bella continued to speak. "I'm not, nor have I ever been his mate. I'm his Singer, that's not a question, but I'm not his mate. I never thought about it until I met Laurent again."
"What are you talking about?" Victoria asked, an unreadable expression now replacing the one of confusion.
Taking another deep breath, Bella began to explain. She told her of her last encounter with Laurent just before he was killed and what he had to say. She told her of how he had made it rather clear that if she truly had been Edward's mate, Edward would have returned to her long ago after leaving or would never have left at all. Yet somehow, he had deluded both her and himself that they belonged together, that she was not only his Singer, but his mate as well. As she spoke, the more Victoria's expression darkened. It was terrifying, but she had to tell her the truth.
"I'm sorry, Victoria," Bella concluded. "But your quest for revenge for James is for nothing. There is no "mate for mate" transaction here. Your goal is forfeit. Your quest against me is for nothing."
Victoria felt like a ton of cinderblocks had been dropped on her, and yet she was still standing. She…she couldn't believe it; she didn't want to. And yet, she realized that the human was right, that everything she had said made sense. She wasn't Edward Cullen's mate, and the goal she was chasing was crumbling right before her eyes. Bella Swan was not Edward Cullen's mate. If she were, then she wouldn't be in a romantic relationship with that wolf. If she were his mate, then he would have returned for her by now, or even a long time ago. She wasn't Cullen's mate, and James's death had been for nothing. James had been killed over a girl who wasn't even a true mate, but just a plaything.
Becoming completely enraged, Victoria laid her eyes on the brunette, watching as the expression on her face froze. She was nothing but red, and the blood that was no longer flowing through her veins was bubbling with fury. Completely enraged, she let out a loud screech that reverberated around the mine shaft. Still screeching, she set her sights on her target and lunged, intent on ending the life before her.
Jacob and the Pack continued to follow the scent of the leech and Bella, letting it lead them to their location. They knew they were getting close, for the scents were getting stronger and stronger. Though Sam was still Alpha of the Pack, he was allowing Jacob to lead the way, as he knew it was personal to the rightful Alpha. As he followed, he couldn't help but feel just a bit guilty. Bella had expressed concerns of the leech being near her home and possibly messing with her father, and Jacob had explained those concerns to him on her behalf. But instead of taking heed of them, even if it came to be nothing, he just ignored it because of how Bella had acted towards Emily. He should have at least had someone being on guard at the Swan home, but because of his Imprint's hurt feelings, as well as his own pride, he allowed this to happen.
They continued to follow the scents until they were positive they were right on top of them. The scents led them to a valley near the mountains, and in that valley they saw an old dilapidated mine shaft. From the looks of it, it was liable to collapse if just enough force was given to the foundation. And as they silently approached, making sure to not be heard by the redhead, they knew that both she and Bella were inside. Finally, they had found Bella, and they were going to rescue her.
Jacob neared the entrance of the mine shaft, telling his brothers through their shared mind hive, "Stay silent, everyone. We don't want to alert the redhead of our presence, not until it's necessary."
The others did as Jacob said, staying completely silent as they approached the mines, stepping inside its darkness. Eyes adjusting to said darkness, they continued to creep, and as they did, their sensitive ears picked up the sound of voices. Those voices belonged to the leech and Bella; they were obviously talking. Because Bella was talking to the redhead, she was distracting her from noticing them. Jacob couldn't help but think, Good job, honey.
From the sounds of the conversation, they were listening in on the back half of it, and Bella was telling Victoria that she wasn't Cullen's mate, never had been, and that her plan for revenge on her was pointless. Suddenly, the leech let out an enraged, feral screech from the brunette's words, and lunged at Bella. Paul, having anticipated this, moved quickly and jumped at the redhead, catching her off guard and knocking her further in the shaft. With that action, the Pack went on the attack, Victoria evading them left and right, though they were giving her a hard time, especially in the confined space of the mine shaft, and the wolves not allowing her to escape.
Jacob didn't join the fray just yet. Instead, he phased back to his human form and ran to Bella, grabbing hold of the ropes holding her hostage and snapping them easily in his hands. The moment she was free, Bella wrapped her arms around Jacob, hugging him close as she breathed in relief, "Jake!"
"Bells, are you okay? You're not hurt, are you?" Jacob asked as he pulled away from the hug, looking his girlfriend over for any injuries outside of the marks made from the ropes.
Shaking her head, Bella answered, "No, I'm not hurt. I'm fine, Jake, really. If anything, just a bit bruised, I'm sure. But I'm so glad you found me."
"Me too." Jacob kissed her sweetly and hugged her once more before telling her to run to the entrance. Well, he would have, had Bella not asked him another question.
"How did you find me? How'd you know that I was in danger and needed help?"
"I'll tell you later, Bells. But for now, I need to deal with the leech, and you need to get out of here." Turning to Embry who fell near them from being punched by the redhead, Jacob ordered him, "Em, take Bella and get her home and away from here."
Bella's eyes widened and she shook her head frantically. "What? No! Jake, I'm staying here with you!"
Grabbing hold of her, Jacob picked her up and placed her on Embry's back, Embry prepared to run out of the mine shaft. "No, Bella. It's not safe for you to be here. Now please, get somewhere safe. We'll get out of this, I promise."
Without another word, Embry took off with Bella on his back, Bella calling back into the mines, "Jake!"
Phasing back into his wolf form, Jacob set his sights on the redhaired leech. This was it. She wasn't getting out of this mine shaft alive. Her damned life was ending here. With a roar, he jumped into the fight, making way for Victoria. She had already subdued Quil and was in the process of attempting to crush Jared. With a large bound, he pounced on the redhead, making her release Jared, and he slammed her into the shaft wall. Victoria let out an unneeded grunt at the force of her being slammed into the wall of the mine shaft. With a snarl, she punched Jacob, throwing him off her before rushing for him instead. If this was who the pathetic human wanted now, then she'd take pleasure in ending his life. And after that, she would kill Bella.
Their fighting was rough and dirty yet did not allow any room for any of the Pack brothers to jump in and help. Quil, coming back to consciousness, stood back up and looked around, only to look up at the ceiling of the shaft when pieces of old rock began to fall down. The rest of the Pack looked up too, seeing the ceiling begin to crack and crumble, Sam could sense that the shaft was going to collapse any minute with them still inside. They needed to get out and fast.
"Everyone, get out of here now! The mine shaft is going to fall!" Sam commanded, Quil and Jared immediately doing as they were told.
Paul looked back at Jacob as he continued to fight the leech yelling, "Come on, Black! We've got to go!"
Jacob had heard them, but he was too focused on the leech in front of him. He intended on ending her right here, right now. Knowing about her power of evasion thanks to Bella, he watched her moves, calculating them quickly before making his move. Faking her out, Jacob let out a loud growl and jumped on top of her, crushing and pinning her down under his large russet paws. Victoria screamed as she struggled underneath him, desperately trying and failing to escape. Looking up at the large red wolf, she looked into his large, dark brown eyes, and saw not only determination to kill her, but her life ending. She couldn't believe it; she had failed to avenge James, and that pathetic human Bella Swan still got to live.
Victoria screamed in rage once more, her screams growing in volume in the crumbling shaft as large wolf jaws clamped down over her head. With one swift motion, Jacob tore her head from her body, effectively cutting off her screams, and thew it towards the exit of the collapsing mine shaft where Sam was waiting. Now in human form, Sam grabbed the leech's head, knowing he'd have to burn it, and shouted, "Jacob, come on!"
Phasing back to human, Jacob grabbed Victoria's decapitated body and ran for the exit. The collapsing of the shaft was getting worse by the second, large pieces of crumbling rock and old soot falling to the ground and blowing up large billows of black smoke. It was practically on top of Jacob, and his powerful legs weren't going to outrun the collapse. Tightening his grip on the redhead's body, Jacob threw it out of the shaft towards Sam, watching it fly out of the collapsing tunnel. He was just able to see Sam catch the leech's body before the shaft finished collapsing on top of him.
Paul and Sam jumped out of the mine shaft, the redhead's head and body in hand. They had made it. They had made it out of the mine shaft before it collapsed. Paul, Jared, and Quil phased back to their human forms, coughing as the smoke and dust from the shaft began continued to fly out of it as it collapsed. Opening his eyes, Quil called out, "Jake!"
Everyone looked to the shaft, watching in horror as the rest of it collapsed on their brother, just meters from the exit. And as they cried his name, the opening continued to close up from the falling rock.
