Chapter 8: Did I do the right thing?….Did I?….

Mason 23, Los Angeles. Late September 2014, late night. Room 832.

Mason 23. The unofficial home of Team Intersect. It was deemed by the CIA and NSA that the hotel was never compromised when Sarah was staying and was give the full security upgrades when Sarah was stationed when Chuck had the Intersect. So to kill two birds with one stone (and the CIA and NSA are cheap bastards when they need to.), they had everyone on the team booked in the hotel on different floors. Orders were to stay in contact only by phone when at the hotel to avoid suspicion and to leave at separate times when heading to the castle. And only to break this rule and meet up in the hotel when an emergency pops up. As we go to room 832, weeping can be heard inside the room.

On her bed, Sarah Walker, A.K.A. The Wild Card Enforcer, A.K.A. The Ice Queen is currently curled up at the headboard. Knees up, sitting, hugging herself, crying. Muttering can be heard from her. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I had to do. To keep you safe, I had to. I saw what were you becoming. What she was planing….. Forgive me, Chuck. Please…". For this has been her routine ever since she cut ties with Chuck. For several months, day in and day out, she played the cold-hearted bitch that she was known for. Knowing that her reputation as the Ice Queen would help sell it. All to fool Beckman. To make her think that she is being a good soldier that's she is known for. To make her think that she was loyal. To make her think that she didn't did give a fuck about Chuck and only cared about the mission. But the act was killing her from the inside. Sarah Walker was a master of a lot of things. Killer, spy, con artist, assassin, but master of her own heart and feeling, she never was. She only knew how to buried them and lock them away when needed. It's only when she was alone that the dam breaks and everything floods out. Every night, she sat on her bed, crying with the same thought going thru her head over and over. "Was it worth it? Was it? To hurt Chuck? To possibly lose him to someone else."

Sarah knew of the gambit that she was playing. The risk that she took to protect her friends and the man she loves, but Sarah believed it was the only play at the time. She knew that Chuck may never forgive her for what she pulled, something that Bryce had warned her about. Both him and Casey were against pushing Chuck out of this. For doing this play. Someone of his skills and talents could have been useful and he was their friend. He deserved better and everyone knew that. Sarah knows that what she did was and can be considered 10 times worse than what that bitch Jill did to him at Stanford, but they didn't see in what she saw was slowly happening to Chuck if he stayed in this life any longer. The coldness. The detachment. The lying. The uncaring nature about death. All signs of being in the spy life. The darkness of this life itself brings. She saw that same darkness that has dominated most of her life was starting to creep into Chuck, slowly turning him into something that he's not. Something that she never wanted for him. She didn't want this life for Chuck. Her pure Chuck. So she started to look for ways to keep Chuck as he is and try to get him out. She made sure any talk of Chuck becoming a spy was stamped out fast and taboo. Sarah did not want Chuck to become the very thing that she was since she was 17. Something that was dangerous. Something dark and deadly. A killer. A murderer. A…. monster. Then she learned of the Truth of the Ring via Bryce. The Truth about this whole shadow war that she was fighting in. Of what Beckman was planning for Chuck and her involvement in the whole thing and its creation. Everything… the truth… and it scared her and for Chuck.

April 2014: Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Hospital Room, The aftermath of the Chase. The next Morning

As the sun rose on LA, shining threw the blind in the room, a constant beeping was heard in the sterile hospital room. Bryce in laying in the hospital bed, hooked up with every medical machine you can imagined as Sarah looked on in sadness as she worked. She was working on a laptop, filing her report for last night. Bryce was incredibility lucky that he survived last night. The doctor said if the bullet was five inches closer to his liver, then he would have been dead in 15 minutes. "Last night was an eye opener for sure." Thought Sarah. "The Ring….for them be involved with Fulcrum is not surprising, but to be this entrenched in a major business like Roraks….shows how much they have penetrated the system. We have a long fight on our hands." Then an annoying thought hit her as she remembers the actions of a certain nerd. "Chuck, you have a lot of explaining to do" As she contemplated the events last night, she saw that Bryce was starting to wake up. Sarah quick got up to her seat, grabbing a cup of ice chips in the process and moved to Bryce's side.

"Bryce… Bryce, can you hear me?" Asked Sarah. Bryce stirred as his eyes opened. "Sarah? Is that you?"

"Yeah, it's me," Sarah said with a smile. Bryce slowly tries to sits up, but hisses in pain. "Easy Bryce, you just got out of surgery." Bryce nodded in pain as Sarah helped him sit up. "Where Chuck and Casey?" "Casey is at the front. He's working on getting transport for the castle. After last night, he's not taking any chances and handing it personally. And Chuck is at home." Bryce nods at the information and relaxes. He looks at Sarah and sees a look that he's very familiar with. A look that said 'spill now or else!' "Yes?…" Bryce began.

"Chuck…" Sarah started..

"Yes?"

"The Driving, his skill of it and all the so called street connections that he has."

"OK, and?"

"How! I mean get the Kingon, you two are huge nerds." This gets Bryce to roll his eyes "Which by the way, I will be learning it so you two don't pull that crap again." Bryce snickers at this "But him being a driving savant just does not compute!"

Bryce lets out a sigh "Sarah, he kind of explained the whole thing last night at the underground garage."

"Not good enough Bryce, now spill and how the hell is Carlos involved in all this?!"

"Carlos was the one who taught him Sarah." This makes Sarah's eyes go wide in shock.

"Wait, what?! Carlos taught him?!"

"Sarah, Carlos was an amateur track racer before he was a mechanic. Hell before even that, Carlos was one of the best street racer in city in his time. He didn't just teach Chuck how to fixed and put cars back together, but also taught Chuck how to drive and race. Is it so hard to believe that? You know that Chuck worked for him in his shop when he was 14 and does considered him a son. Is it so hard to believe that Carlos wanted to pass what he knows to his kids?"

Sarah sighs "No, it's not. But Chuck never showed that type of driving skill to me or Casey." At this, Bryce gave Sarah an annoyed look. "That's because you or Casey never allowed him to show it. Knowing you two, you probably throw him in the back and tell him to stay in the car all the time." By the blush that Sarah was showing right now, he hit the issue on the head. He popped an ice chip in his mouth and continued "Look, when it comes to cars, Chuck is one of the best. If it wasn't for his passion for computers, he would have most likely been a pro racer in NASCAR or Formula F1 by now. He's that good. You just have to trust him."

Sarah glares at Bryce. "I do trust him, Bryce. I just don't like the fact that this was kept from me." This little statement pissed Bryce off a bit. "HE Didn…" Bryce began, frustrated at Sarah, but stopped himself from yelling. He took a deep breath before he continued. "He didn't keep this from you Sarah. It was there the whole time, in your face. If you actually looked, you have seen it a long time ago. Besides, if he did keep this for you, can you blame him? He was being watched by Casey 24/7 with no privacy to speak of and was treated like he was one of the bad guys by two government agencies that should have been protecting him and should have his back in the first place on day one!"

Bryce knew he hit a nerve by the way that Sarah eyes glared at him, blazing in pure anger, but he knew by the way she was clenching her jaw, she wouldn't say anything due the fact he was right and she knows it. He knew that the whole 'Chuck being the Intersect' should have never happened. He knew it, she knew it, and every US agency that was involved in the Intersect program knew it too. But it did happen and now they are dealing with the aftermath of the whole mess. Bryce knows that he once again, he fucked up Chuck life big time. Having no choice but to send the Intersect to Chuck, along with getting him kicked out of Stanford would haunt Bryce for the rest of his days. Even more now since he put Chuck in the middle of this war. And now with the new information that he was able to retain about this shadow war with The Ring made his guilt even more profound. But, he would be Damned if he allowed anyone else to try to harm Chuck anymore.

Taking a deep breath, Bryce calmed himself. He knew that he needed Sarah's help, so he had to defuse this. "Look Sarah, I don't want to get in a fight with you about this. So let's put this on the back burner for now, I have something you need to see asap." Still pissed but a little intrigued, Sarah nodded her head, motioning Bryce to continue. "Go to the closet and get out my left shoe" Sarah quickly goes to the closet inside the room and finds the bag with Bryce clothing inside of it, finding said shoe inside the bag. With a quick check, she finds the heel of the shoe is loose. She moves the heel to the side and sees an USB drive inside the shoe. She takes it out and shows it to Bryce. "Plug it in the laptop and read the first file. Then get back to me."

Sarah quickly went to her laptop and plugged in the USB drive and started to read the first file. As Sarah read the files, shock started to set, followed by horror. Sarah covers her mouth as she continues reading, her eyes wide in pure disbelief. "What in god's name….this can't be right. It just can't." "Bryce what the hell is this?! What the fuck is this?!" Sarah exclames. Bryce looked at Sarah, his face set in stone, his mouth thinned. "Keep reading Sar." were his only words. With a shaky nod, she continued. As Sarah read more and entered the point of no return, the pit in her stomach that started to grow in the beginning, got lower and lower and dropped when she finished. "Bryce….If this is true….then The Ring…" Sarah started, voice shaky, her eyes full of fear but Bryce finished her train of thought, knowing she won't be able to finish. "Has been around for a very long time and at one point...both Beckman and Graham were once apart of The Ring as one of the Council of Elders."

Mason 23, Room 832.

Sarah wiped her eyes and took several deep breaths, shaking badly from the memory. Learning the whole truth about this so-called shadow war was something she didn't like to dwell on. It didn't help to find out in the files that Graham was dirty from the get go. But the strangest thing from the files that he never used her for his own unsanctioned missions that he was known for. For all intensive purposes, he made sure that any mission or project that she was involved in was fully sanctioned and on the up and up. In fact, he took great pains to make sure that any involvement that she had with the war on The Ring was minimal at best. The only reason she brought her in for the Intersect mission and made one of handlers for Chuck was due to the fact he needed someone he could trust on the field. As she learned more from the files, she found out the plans that they had for Chuck when he still had the Intersect and this put her in panic mode.

Apparently, Beckman was going to introduce an updated version of the Intersect called '1.5' that would allow Chuck to do the same things that the '2.0' would do but to a lesser degree. This would have forced Chuck into service as a spy and allow Beckman to introduce an experimental drug called Laudanol. The drug apparently has the ability to suppress emotions and have the person function at 100%. However the side-effects were dangerous as it made the user an unfeeling, amoral monster that won't stop until the job is done and took out anybody that was in the way. Friend or foe. Apparently due to the fact that the Intersect worked on getting an emotional response from the user, It was theorized that the drug can surpass that hurdle and have the Intersect function at 100% all the time. Beckman was going to introduce the drug to Chuck and use him as a guinea pig to see how it works on the field. If it was successful, then Beckman would have order to have Chuck dosed on the Laudanol 24/7 and use him as her personal assassin.

Realizing the danger, Sarah agreed to help Bryce. They later brought Casey into the fold when they learned that Beckman was expanding the team with the CATS and Shaw. That's when Sarah made the decision to cut all ties with Chuck. Both Casey and Bryce were against it, saying that it will be one of the biggest mistakes that she makes with Chuck. However, she went and did it, knowing it could backfire on her badly. It didn't help that she almost caved in during the call when she heard his pleas to her. But she stayed strong and got through it. It didn't matter after the call, she ran to the restroom and puked her guts out. Or she has been crying herself to sleep every night. Or she closed herself off on almost everybody except Bryce and Casey. All that mattered was that Chuck was safe and out of this life. That he was not in danger anymore and she can focus on taking down Beckman for good. Afterwards she can find Chuck and tell him the whole truth and start to mend the fences so to speak. But everything went to shit when Beckman announced that she was bringing Chuck back in the fold and had the president backing on it. Realizing that they were running out of time, Bryce, Casey and herself had to scramble and work double time to get the dirt they needed to take down Beckman. Then it turns weird with Carina showing up today, late, singing Disney songs, dancing to said songs, and having the biggest shit eating grin that she has ever seen. And somehow, someway, it felt it was directed to her. As a big 'Fuck You" to her. She hopping to get an incentive from Bryce earlier tonight since he was good at that sort of thing, but instead it got her thinking about something.

Mason 23, Room 832. earlier that night

Sarah walks to her phone, picks it and hits the speed dial on a well known number she has been using in the past several months.

"Hello?"

"It's me. Before we begin, do you know what happened this morning with Carina? It was very weird."

"Yes the thing with Carina this morning was very weird and no I don't want to know the cause of it."

"Snort I guess there are some things that even you won't touch. Anyway how the progress on the dig of Beckman's past"

"Slow I'm afraid. Beckman hid much of her dirt when she became the director of NSA, but my sources have said that they are close to finding what we need."

"Then we have to get lucky on this for it to succeed….. Listen Bryce, be honest with me, what I did to Chuck…."

"To be perfectly honest, no I don't agree with what you did, but what is done is done. We could have used his help on this but you had to pull that play on him."

"You know why I did it. Beckman's plans would have destroyed Chuck and made him something that's not. It for that reason why I did it. It was for his protection."

"I understand it was done for his protection, but he doesn't know that. That little stunt you did could have destroyed him. You should have talked to me and Casey, It didn't help that Casey had to leave him high and dry like that due to Beckman."

"So I'm what? Screwed? Like hell I am! I understand I should have talked to you two and the timing of the whole thing was wrong, but Chuck knows me and knows that I have his best interest at heart. I would never intentionally hurt him and he knows that. Did I most likely fucked up? Probably. Can it be fixed? You damn right it can. And I don't need you or Casey to fucking tell me every single goddamn time how badly I fucked up with Chuck!"

"Easy, no need to cuss me out. I'm on your side. I am just saying it is not going to work out the way you hope. I have known him longer than you and trust me, he can and has held a grudge before."

"Chuck holding a grudge? Sweet, lovable Chuck? Are you crazy Bryce? Chuck can't hold a grudge if it was to save his life!"

"That where you are wrong, I've seen it. He's one of the best men that I have ever met, but he's no saint. You will have your work cut out with you. Not only that, you are forgetting about Ellie and Sue? You will be lucky if you can get out of that little problem with just a bloody nose."

"Please don't remind me. I know I have an uphill battle with those two….. Oh dear god, I forgot about Miko. And I just heard that she got her grand master status about four months ago. She's going to kick my ass, is it she?"

"Yeah, that's a possibility as well. Like I said, you went completely overboard with it and it may have cost you him. Like I said before, you should have talked to me or Casey, before making that call."

"I didn't…. sigh I know it's bad, I understand that. Maybe you can help. Try to get him to listen."

"I don't know if I should. He most likely pissed at me as well."

"Wait, really? Why? Why would Chuck be mad at you?"

"Really? Did you forget what Casey told us before we brought him in?"

"Oh yeah….Shit..."

"Yup. But listen, what you did can be considered what Jill did to him only 10 times worse. I understand the reasoning, but you have realized you may have lost him because of this."

"I can't believe that Bryce. I know this will be hard but I do have faith that he will forgive me. I have to try."

"Then all I can say on that matter is good luck on getting him back. Listen, I am going to contact Casey and see if his contacts in the USMC have found anything. I'll see you at the Castle tomorrow."

"Yeah. Night, Bryce."

"See you in the morning, Sarah. Good night."

Mason 23, Room 832. Now

Sarah sighed as she replayed the phone call in her head and what Bryce said. Will it be that hard to reconnect with Chuck? She couldn't believed that. She just can't. She had to believed that everything will work out. She sacrifice too much only to lose it all. But what Bryce said did have some merit. He knew Chuck the longest, being his best friend. So there is a possab….no, no,...no..NO! She can't believe that. He is everything to her. She can't lose him. She can't….

Sarah covers her face with her hands, trying her damndest not to start crying again. Chuck and herself will be together, as it should have been from the get go. Everything can and will work out…..unless….There someone else… A dark look flashes in her eyes as she thinks of some bitch taking Chuck from her. "Like hell that I would let that happen. I'll gut the bitch and let her bleed out nice and slow." But the more she thought about it, the more she realizes that there was a good chance that Chuck was no longer single. And that thought plagued her badly. It had been several months since she saw Chuck and the possibility of Chuck having someone else in his life was there. "And I doubt that Chuck would be happy if his current girlfriend would 'disappear' suddenly out of the blue. Or the agency itself for me using my skill for a personal reasons." Thought Sarah. "I guess I'll go with that plan when that skank ass bitch Jill rolled in town." Remembering both Chuck's and Jill's reaction on that little red number she used for the undercover date they had for the Lefleur mission. That little tidbit brought a small smile to her face.

Looking at the clock and seeing that it's getting late, Sarah rubs her face. Realizing that this train of thought is not going to help right now, she takes a deep breath. "One at of time Walker. One mission at a time. Take down Beckman first, then get your man. It's almost over. Turning off the lights, Sarah lays down. Trying to get some sleep. As it comes, one thought goes through her head as she enters a restless sleep for the night. "We will be together Chuck. Just wait for me please….."

AN: Like I said, this popped up when I was working on the dinner chapter. In fact this and my second bunny that popped up came from that. Not only that, I felt that we needed a peak from the other side, and I also felt that Sarah was being ignored in the fic, so here it is. Next time, my second bunny gets flexed and then the dinner. Later all.
