Georgia

We landed on a secluded dock just outside of a small island village. Our pod rocked in the water against the pier as it shifted with the shallow waves. I cracked the hatch and took a look outside. No one on the dock and no one on the pier or surrounding beach. It was dark outside with a faint light illuminating the wooden boards. I did my best to disembark the pod but the rocking and the lighting made it difficult to see where I was stepping and almost tripped over a lose board. I am glad I was able to grab onto one of the support logs. I turned around to help Evangeline out of the pod and saw her standing there behind me already. She winked at me before walking up the dock to the street.

"Show off…" I mumbled. A smile formed on my face all the same.

I tried to take in everything as we approached the first set of buildings near the water banks. It was green, greener than my armor, and the roads were still dirt and rocks instead of the pavement of larger cities. Yet they still had street lamps that looked like gas lanterns and pulsated like a flickering flame, but were electrically powered by something I could not properly identify. There were only about four people out and about to see them land, and one of them was making their way towards us, a woman. She was dressed in a short, black dress that sopper above her knees and a snow shite cloak inlaid with red and held to her shoulder with a rose shaped pin. A rifle rested in her hands and pointed in our direction.

"Who are you?" she asked. I took a step forward and she flicked off the safety. "Don't…" she warned.

"A little early for these pleasantries, isn't it?"

"Dakota?" she asked and he made his way past us.

"Hello again, Miss Rose. It has been too long." She ran up to him and hugged him.

"That it has," she said. "Who are they?" she asked pointing towards the four of us.

"Refuges, they need new lives away from the rest of the universe."

"And you brought them here?"

Dakota shrugged. "What better place than a remote island on a planet known only to one outsider." The woman sighed. "Please, Rose? My daughter is in danger."

Rose slipped her rifle over her shoulder and approached us. Well, she more approached me and got up in my face. She was shorter than Evangeline by almost a whole head, but still managed to meet me eye to eye. She was intimidating with her silver eyed scowl.

"All four of them? The house is only so big, and with four of us living there already, it will be quite crowded."

"Just the two; my daughter and the green one."

She nodded. "Very well." She turned to walk away. "You are all welcome to join us for dinner," she added. "You know Tai has issues with cooking for a small army."

"I do," Dakota added. "But I cannot stay."

"Why not?" Evangeline asked. She looked at her dad.

Dakota approached her and put his hands on her shoulders.

"I've spent your entire life trying to protect you from the outside world by trying not to let you out of my sight. By trying to keep you from experiencing everything you ought to in order to survive out there. I knew something like this would happen eventually, but I was hopeful it never would. You are old enough now to go on your own journey and write your own story." He pulled her in close and kissed her on the forehead. She hugged him tightly. When she let go, he looked at me. "I trust you will keep her safe?" I looked at him and nodded. He extended a hand to me. "I need to hear you say it."

"She will be safe with me, and I will protect her." I took his hand and shook it. I looked back up at York and Carolina. "I won't be going with you." Carolina took a step forward like she was about to protest the idea but York stopped her by placing a hand on her shoulder.

"I'm sure the Director will understand," York said. "So long as the armor and the AI unit are recovered, we can play it off that you died in a freak jetpacking accident." I tossed him the helmet.

"You can have it. Xi stopped talking to me after restoring my memories."

"That okay with you, Carolina?" he asked.

Carolina walked up and picked the helmet up out of the dirt. She stared at it. What was once part of a powerful suit of armor was now an empty shell. The unit in charge of running all of the advanced technology, destroyed, leaving a hollow lifeless memory chip. I removed the rest of the armor piece by piece until all I had on was the skin tight body suit that lied underneath. It was pointless to carry the bulk of it anymore. Not even the shield generators would power themselves up.

"Take care of yourself, Georgia," she said. "It was nice working with you while it lasted."

"Likewise."

"We should be off," Dakota said. "It is only a matter of time before Hargrove tracks my pod." He looked over his shoulder as they walked away. "I love you, daughter. Be safe."

Evangeline waved goodbye as the pod we arrived on lifted back into the dark, night sky and disappeared among the stars. I felt something on my shoulder and looked to my side to see Rose between Evangeline and I with her arms around us. Her feet were dangling being so short compared to us. A smile was spread across her face.

"Don't worry," she began. "You guys will love it here, and Tai is an AMAZING cook! Raven and Qrow are awesome too. Just make sure to stay on Raven's good side. She tends to get a bit cranky sometimes. Oh, by the way, you guys like chocolate chip cookies, right? I make them all the time and everyone loves them…"

Rose's voice faded out as I began to think back. Project Freelancer, they gave me an opportunity that I took, but they could not give me my freedom. I think Rose is right. So long as I have Evangeline, I am going to love it here. I am going to love it anywhere.

Alas, this story finally comes to an end and I have finally returned to the world of fanfiction whilst working on my own novel on the side. This ending has been a long time coming and I am glad that I have finally finished it. Sincerest apologies to everyone who was anticipating this end.

Georgia and Evangeline finally get to live their own lives away from the constraints of their previous ones thanks to some help from a fairly recognized cameo from the world of Remnant. I do hope to insert Georgia and Evangeline in later fics (which has already begun if memory serves me correctly). I hope to have a new one out for you all soon.

Stay tuned!
