(Back with Zim…)
[Location: Deep space;]
He wished he could move faster. "Irk I would kill for a Drop Gate right about now." He voiced openly.
"Patience, a good leader should always practice tolerance for delays." Hobo 678 lectured.
Zim looked away from the controls to give him a much deserved scowled. They had left Hobo 13 over a week ago and needless to say Zim was feeling more than a little antsy. He could only imagine how much trouble Tak had caused in his absence. Sure, he told himself Dib could handle it, but the more he thought about it, the more he dreaded the worse. "You don't know how impulsive she can be." He growled.
Hobo 678 actually laughed. "Don't I?" He asked. "You forget, I taught her everything she knows." He shook his head. "I never could get her to understand patience, perhaps it's just something an Irken can't grasp."
'Oh, he did not just go there.'
"I'll have you know that I have lived among several enemies for years before making my first strike." Zim hissed.
"So, what makes this any different?" Hobo 678 asked. "She is just another enemy."
"It's not her I'm worried about, it's…" He pauses abruptly. He wasn't sure he was ready to admit his involvement with Dib to total strangers.
"Then what are you worried about?" Skoodge cut in. They were all strapped in, on the ship's main deck making the conversation anything but private.
Zim shakes his head, "It's nothing." He lied.
"Trust is what makes a team strong." Uma reminded him.
"Yes, are we not brothers and sisters in battle?" Insectus asked. "Have we not build a bond during our time together?"
They had, Zim knew they had, still… "It's personal." He admitted. "My reputation as an Invader is nothing compared to this…"
Bangy suddenly perks up. "Personal, you mean you care?" He asked.
Zim nods. "I do, for the planet, and those who reside on it." There he had said it, well sort of; sure, he cared for one individual more than the others, but still.
"Why?" Skoodge asked. He was openly surprised by his new Taller and for many reasons. First, Zim says they are going Home, only to reveal that he meant Earth not Irk. Now he was admitting that both Earth and its people were important to him. He knew Zim wanted to change Irk for the better of everyone, but now he was beginning to wonder if Earth was the reason for this.
"We could learn a lot from Earth's inhabitance." Zim said, confirming his suspicions. "We are not as different from them as the Tallest would have you believe."
Skoodge nodded, Zim was his Taller after all, and he had promised Skoodge that he would finally get the recognition he deserved. Zim was many things, a tyrant, and he was known to eliminate all who stood in his way. But he was also known for one more thing: His word. Zim always delivered on a promise; he wouldn't let Skoodge down, especially not now!
"The Throbulator looks forward to meeting these Earthanoids you speak so highly of." Throbulator screams.
Skoodge watch as a smile slipped on Zim's face. He couldn't help but feel a tinge of jealousy for these Earthanoids. Why did they have the respect of his Taller? What made them so special?
Zim can see the dangerous levels of lethal loyalty coming off Skoodge, they were as obvious as neon lights. Still, he didn't let it bother him much, Skoodge couldn't help what he was feeling. The programing made him worship those above him. Of course, he'd be angry if his Taller showed more interest in Inferior defectives than one of his own. But once Siri corrected him, Skoodge would see the flaws of their people. Zim was sure of it, he only wished there was a way to delete the programing all together.
If they could somehow delete it from all of Irk at once, than maybe his people would listen to reasoning. Maybe they could come to a consensus before any blood shed was needed. It was a long shot, and he knew it, but he was still hoping for a peaceful solution to all of this.
And he wasn't the only one, not far away, similar ideas were being brought into the light.
(Back with Dib…)
[Location: The newly repaired Swollen Eyeball HQ]
Today was an important day, with Tak's antics getting more extreme; the Members of the Swollen Eyeball had called for a meeting. The agenda was obvious, what do we do about Tak and the impending Irken Invasion!?
Dib felt like his argument was very strong, still he knew not many would want to do things his way. Regardless, he was going to speak his mind, whether his father liked it or not.
Prof. Membrane wasn't against his son's views, he just felt that others would turn a deaf ear to them, especially the whole of the human race. Yes, it was obvious to everyone what Dib was going to speak about. Still, no one stopped him as he stepped up to the podium and addressed his fellow Eyeball members.
"Greetings." Dib said before clearing his throat. "I know what I am about to say is not of popular opinion, but it must be said." He paused waiting for an outburst.
No one spoke out.
Dib looked to his mother, who gave him a reassuring nod.
Annabel knew this topic wasn't easy for Dib, it brought back painful memories of his youth. Back when he was ridiculed for speaking his mind about the truth of the Paranormal. She hoped that at least their comrades would be more open to what he had in mind.
"I used to look up at space with hope and wonder in my eyes." Dib continued. "I always wondered what amazing things could be waiting out there just out of our reach." He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "That was until space started looking back at us."
Whispers filled the room, and Dib waited for them to die down before continuing. "The Irken Empire is known throughout the galaxy as a merciless scourge that destroys everything it touches. Now, they are poised at Earth's door. Two Invaders have tried to infiltrate Earth and prepare it for the coming invasion. And while we may have gain one as an ally, Tak proves to be more dangerous with every encounter."
Gaz could feel tension building with Dib's every word, she knew he was doing this on purpose. He wanted to build a picture of exactly what they were going up against. By doing so, he hoped it would bring his message home. So that no one would be able to doubt his conclusion.
Peg took hold of Gaz's hand; she couldn't help but be nervous about this. If Dib had his way than the whole world would know the truth. They weren't alone and sure, she knew exactly what kind of dangers lurked around them, but…
Ignorance was bliss!
"With all that said, my fellow Eyeballs I ask you; can we afford to be complacent?" Dib asked. "Are we willing to continue the way we have been? Or are we willing to admit that this is bigger than us, that by standing alone we are submitting Earth to its doom."
"Agent Moth-man." Dark Booty Spoke up. "What you are asking is not easy, every attempt we have made to warn the public of any paranormal threats has been shut down by the government."
"I know, but we have to make them listen, if the governments of this planet aren't informed how are we supposed to fight off a full-scale attack?" Dib argued. "We can't even capture one Irken, how will we fair against thousands?!"
"I believe Moth-man may have a point." Lard Nar spoke up; he knew this meeting was about the Earth and that he really had no vote in the matter. Regardless, he could offer insight for his new allies. "I know I am not a member of your Agency." He went on. "But speaking from experience small rebel cells standing alone have been no match for the Empire in the past. Your people may not wish to believe but they still have the right to know of the impending danger."
"Exactly." Dib cut in. "Which is why I think we should let the planet's governments know the truth. On Peace Day they will all be right here joining us in the celebration of world peace. It's the perfect time to let them know…"
"And say they don't believe us." A member, Agent Nessie spoke up. "Then what?"
"We make them believe." Mrs. Bitters spoke up. "We have more than enough evidence of Alien activity on this planet."
"I hope you are not suggesting we expose our allies for said proof." Annabel spoke up respectfully.
"No..." Mrs. Bitters stood tall, "Gir is all the proof we need."
Everyone looked to the Sir unit awaiting his reaction.
"Master didn't say to not tells anyone." Gir spoke mostly to himself. He honestly looks unsure on how to proceed. Finally, he nods. "Let's do it."
Several others nodded their agreement, even Agent Nessie couldn't dispute the fact that Earth deserved to know what they were up against. Even if the world leaders chose not to take their warning seriously it was their duty to try.
"Agent Moth-Man you have our blessing." Mrs. Bitters announced.
Dib breathed a sigh of relief; this briefing had not been easy for him. After all this time he was still not use to people believing him.
Prof. Membrane stilled his nerve, he was not thrilled about this outcome. If he openly supported the Swollen Eyeball before the world leaders, he could lose his reputation as a respected scientist. But if he didn't stand by them, no one would take the threat seriously. Worse he would be letting his family down, and now that they were finally together...He couldn't risk losing them; not again.
Annabel took his hand in hers and gave it a squeeze. "Well do this together." She promised him.
Membrane smiled. "For now, and always." He agreed.
Gaz held Peg's hand a little tighter at those words, this was all happening so fast, she wasn't sure she liked it very much.
Peg gave her a reassuring smile. "We got this." She promised. "It will all be over before you know it."
Gaz knew she was right; Peace Day was two days away and by the time it was over the world would know the truth.
The question was would they be ready for it?
(Later that night at the Membrane Household)
"Prepare your starving, gurgling child bellies for the awesome eventuality of DINNER!" Prof. Membrane declared as he and Annabel started passing out plates of food.
"It looks great." Peg praised. "Thanks, Mr. and Mrs. Membrane." She had of coursed planned to stay the night to help finish getting ready for Peace Day. An Idea her parents were thrilled about, actively making the world a better place was their passion. And it warmed their hearts to see Peg take a similar interest.
Gaz takes in the overwhelming aroma of the food before them. She points to her food dramatically. "I'm gonna eat that food." She declares.
Membrane halts her advances. "Hold up now! The rest of the family needs to join us."
"Coming!" Luna shouts as she and Moon come running down the stairs with Gir.
"Sorry, we were putting the last touches on the Peace Day Song." Luna explains as they sit down.
"Oh, it's finished then?" Richard asked as he and Lard Nar also join them. "Does it have a name, can't be a song without a name."
"IT's called: Peace Is Nice." Luna answered with Gir squealing out the name with her in unison.
"It's really cool." Moon added. "I think the other kids will like it."
"Then it is perfect." Annabel assured her. "Wait where is Dib?" She asked as she finally noticed his absence.
"Yes, Isn't it time your brother joined us?" Membrane asked Gaz.
"He's probably still in the garage." Gaz growled. "He's obsessed with getting Tak's Ship back in working condition."
"So obsessed he has moved the project to our garage, apparently." Annabel scowled giving Lard Nar a knowing look.
"Oh, was I not supposed to help the youth broaden his horizons?" He asked.
"Not when it interferes with family time." Annabel began to lecture.
"You'll have to forgive my kin." Trawl said as he joined them. "He tends to obsess over projects as well."
"Don't I know it." Annabel remarked and then looked to Gaz. "Sweety please go get your brother."
I'll try, but I doubt he'll come." Gaz gets up and grunts as she walks out of the kitchen and through an adjacent door next to the basement stairs. She opens the door and peaks in, the garage was a cluttery mess. In fact, it was so bad she couldn't even see where her brother was in the ocean of it all.
"Hey, Dib! Mom says come to dinner" She yells.
"Can't you just send it on a hover tray?" Dib asked from somewhere in the center of the clutter. "I'm close to a breakthrough."
"That's what you said an hour ago!" Annabel yelled from the kitchen.
Dib groaned, he loved having his mother back, he really did, but her insistence on daily family time was getting in the way of groundbreaking progress. He rubs his eyes, pushing his glasses on the top of his head as he did so.
"Mom is serious Dib." Gaz warned him.
"I know, but Zim is still gone, and I know Tak is out there, waiting and watching. I have to find out her next move. This ship could help us track her down, I just know it!" Dib growled in frustration. "Peace Day is the perfect time for Tak to strike, the world leaders will all be in one place. She's too impulsive to not give up such an opportunity."
"Dib everyone knows she'll try." Gaz pointed out. "That's why the AIs will be patrolling the area, they'll stop her."
"And what if she's found a way past them?" Dib challenged. "The AIs sure didn't notice she attacked the HQ with Keef."
It was true, somehow Tak had slipped past their defenses, even though the AIs were sure that such a maneuver was impossible.
"That's why every agent will be there, Tak will not get past all of us." Gaz argued. "We had our guard down last time. You were back, we got distracted. It won't happen again."
Dib wanted to believe her, He really did, but Tak always seemed to be one step ahead of all of them.
"Dib I'm counting to ten!" Annabel warned.
"Coming!" Dib suppressed a growl, as he practically swims to the Garage door where Gaz is still waiting.
"It will be fine Dib." Gaz assures him. "And who knows maybe dinner will be the break you need to jumps start your brain."
Dib was doubtful, but maybe Gaz was right, it wouldn't be the first time after all.
"Finally!" Moon declared. "I'm starving!"
"Sorry." Dib mumbled.
"I know your eager to finish, but you'll forget to eat if I don't make you." Annabel reasoned.
Dib smiled; he knew she was right. He begins to dig into his food trying to finish quickly.
Annabel shakes her head. "I've never understood the work until you drop mentality you and your father have."
"It's the mark of a true Dibson!" Membrane spoke proudly. "The brain just refuses to stop, eh Son?"
Dib nodded; his mouth full of food.
"I would help." Trawl offered. "But her ship is an outdated model, with personally made additions. It's like a cipher guised as a ship."
Lard Nar Nodded his agreement. He too had tried to help Dib in the past but found similar troubles. Of course, that was not what kept him away. He had spent the better part of the last few weeks trying to help Trawl recall all he can about his time on Irk. Trawl had been exposed to so many of their secrets that it took days to recall it all and even longer trying to sort through all the information.
Unfortunately, the former Vort Prisoner was not allowed to write anything down, otherwise that would have been easier.
"Why is fixing the Ship so important?" Moon asked.
"A lot of the data drives are damaged from the crash." Dib explained after swallowing his food. "Once the ship is repaired fully, I can run a diagnostic and hopefully retrieve the lost data."
"How?" Richard asked.
"Well once the ship is done, it's personal computer brain should still be linked with Tak's PAK." Dib explained. "Which means, if it's fixed correctly, it should start recording Tak's every move."
"And we'll know where she is!" Peg concluded.
"And where she has been." Dib added. "See very important." He reasoned.
Annabel shakes her head. "Important or not I bet even Tak pauses for a meal."
"Of course, all Irken soldiers are taught to fuel themselves for battle." Lard Nar pointed out.
Dib nodded his agreement, how could he not? It would appear adults no matter what age you are; would always out rule you.
Membrane pulls his glove off, revealing one of the robotic arms underneath. He moves his fingers and hand experimentally. "Besides I think Tak will find my upgrades more than enough of a challenge." He smiles darkly, no doubt ready to show off his latest additions.
"Dibson, not at the table." Annabel warned.
Membrane obeys, putting his glove back on, giving Dib a wink as he does. "Later." He promised.
Dib's smile widen, it still pained him to remember why his father had the robotic arms, but he loved watching his dad show them off.
About 30 mins later everyone had finished their dinner and were settling down for the night, all but Dib who was once again back in the garage.
His father joins him soon after.
"Dib, I know your busy, but I was hoping you'd be my wingman on the last and final test of the Membracelets tomorrow morning." Membrane said hopefully.
"Sure, thing dad." Dib promised, not looking up from his work.
"This thing really has your full attention." Membrane comments.
"I'm sorry dad, I know everyone thinks it's beyond repair and that we don't have time trying to fix a hopeless cause but..." Dib trails off.
"Nonsense." Membrane gets comfortable beside him. "Anything important to you is important to me."
Dib smiled. "Thanks dad."
"You'll have to tell me what to do of course." Membrane added. "I'm afraid Irken Tech is not my forte."
Dib laughs before diving into a lesson on Irken Tech that continues into the early hours of the next day.
Not knowing that close by, the enemy was also burning the midnight oil.
Tak stood before her army of Membrane robots, it had taken many weeks for her to complete them, but they were done.
All they needed was a general to command them.
Tak looked down at the table before her where the form of a lifeless Sir unit laid before her. She smiled and pulled a backup drive out of her PAK it was labeled with four letters.
MIMI!
She placed the drive within her new Sir and Laughed as she used a car Battery and spark plugs to bring her long lost companion back to life. "Wake up my MIMI." She cackled. "We have work to do."
The Sir Unit's eyes snapped open, Mimi was Back and now an entire army of Membrane bots were at her command.
"Excellent!" Tak declared. "This time the enemy will fall, and I will be victorious."
Yes, Surely now her victory was certain, for nothing could stop her, Not even Zim himself.
(Back with Dib…)
[The Next Day.]
Dib yawned loudly as he made the final repairs to Tak's ship, okay final was a bit overreaching. The ship's flight capability was still completely totaled, but other than that it was fully operational.
"This is it!" He exclaimed out loud as he ran the final diagnostic, a loading screen appeared. "YES!" He screamed. Than seconds later a Mandatory data upload began.
Estimated Completion Time: 8 Hours
"No!" Dib screamed in frustration, banging his head on the ship's console. "Why-can't-anything-be easy!" His head smacked the controls with every word.
Oh well he guess it couldn't be helped; He'd just have to find a way to spend his day.
Just than a voice rang out from just outside.
"Dib, son, come quickly!" That was his father's voice, and it sounded urgent!
Dib races out of the garage an into the front driveway where his father appears to be addressing a group of children.
"All right, test children." He exclaimed. "Now that you have turned in your Permission slips, we can get started."
The four kids cheered.
"I'd like to take the time to thank you for volunteering today. Now these bracelets are just prototypes, so try not to breathe or think while the energy field is..." He stops as Dib bumps into him "What? Oh. Dib you are just in time!"
"Huh?" For a moment Dib is confused.
"The Peace Day edition Membracelet." Prof. Membrane declared. "We are just about to run the final test. I know your busy, but my big keynote event is tonight. Today I reveal it to the world. Then tomorrow: Peace Day!"
"Oh right, demonstration time!" Dib perks up. "Go ahead Dad."
"Right...where was I... Oh yes." He passes out five Membracelet and Dib and the other kids put them on. "Now as I said before, these bracelets are just prototypes. So, try not to breathe or think while the energy field is activated."
"Right!" The kids say in unison.
"Now hold hands and thank happy peaceful thoughts." Prof. Membrane instructed.
Dib and the kids obeyed and soon they began to float as a blueish energy field wrapped around them.
"Perfect!" Prof. Membrane is thrilled. "Honey, It works!" He shouted.
Annabel smiles at him from the kitchen window. "That's great!"
Inside the living room the girls and Gir practice singing their song.
"Peace is nice, Peace is nice."
"How's it coming Girls!" She calls to them.
"It's coming together." Luna answered.
"Yes, but I think it needs more." Moon looked thoughtful. "Gir, can you pick up the beat a little?"
"You got it Little Bluey!" Gir starts typing wildly on a laptop.
To Peg it looks like he's just breaking the thing, in fact, a few keys on the keyboard go flying. Regardless, whatever he's doing is working because the beat picks up.
"Much better!" Moon praised.
"How much longer do you think you need?" Gaz asked them. She was sitting on the couch, being their captured audience. "Dad's going to need us at the auditorium in a couple of hours to help with the Keynote." She reminded them.
"Not too long." Peg assured her. "Just one more run through and we'll call it a day. Ready Guys?"
Luna, Moon and Gir give her a thumbs up.
"Okay Gaz on you." Peg says.
"And a one and a two." Gaz announced. "And a one and a two, three, four."
The group of friends began to sing the song as the music played from the computer.
Back outside Prof. Membrane is wrapping up the test.
"Very good children." He praises as he takes back the bracelets. "For your contribute today you each get a free Membracelet at tomorrow's event!"
The children around Dib cheer.
"Thanks again for coming everyone." Prof. Membrane dismisses them, and the kids run along.
"That was awesome dad." Dib told him.
"Yes, I am pretty great, aren't I?" He boasted proudly. "Any way I'll let you get back to your work."
"Actually, I'm stuck waiting for updates." Dib admitted. "Got anything else you need help with?"
"Well, I'd like to practice my speech." Prof. Membrane admitted.
"Sounds good to me." Dib tells him.
Prof. Membrane beams, "More father and son time! Onward!" He declares.
Dib shakes his head and chuckles as he follows his father back to the house.
Moments later he, Trawl, Lar Nard, and his granddad Richard are sitting in the basement (A.K.A his father's lab) as Prof. Membrane starts to run through his speech for tonight.
Sure, it wasn't the most fun thing he could be doing now, but Dib found himself smiling. He was finally doing it. Months before he had allowed his obsession to capture Zim and Tak get in the way of what matters most. Now here he was, not just making head way in the fight to defend Earth, but also keeping promises. He seemed to have finally found the perfect balance between the two, and he couldn't be more happy.
Besides the world leaders wouldn't be here until Peace Day tomorrow so he didn't have to worry about Tak interfering tonight.
Or so he thought, unfortunately Tak would soon prove him wrong.
(Back with Tak...)
"All right Mimi." Tak said as she stood before her newly build SIR and her new Prof. Membrane robot army. "Tonight, we strike the enemy." She explained. "By getting them out of the way, we can infiltrate Prof. Membrane labs, then I will have unchallenged access to the world leaders." She looks thoughtful. "I just need a way to keep the children busy."
"You could send them all to Moo-Ping 10." Mimi suggested. Without her cat disguise the SIR spoke clearly.
"Tempting." Tak agreed. "Perhaps I will send a few of the rebels there." She admitted. "But there are some of them that I want to be here. Like the Dib." She smiled wickedly. "I want him to see as I take over his precious world. I want him to look on helplessly as I strip the Earth of its freedom. I want him to witness the moment of his failure!"
"Understood!" Mimi saluted.
"However, we will be so busy with Peace Day, I will need something else to keep an eye on Dib and the brats." She turns to a self-made cloning chamber. It was very similar to the one that held her "father" when she was posing as Kat, the daughter of The Deelishus Weenie Corporation. However, this one was nowhere nears in the same league. Mostly because it had been assembled in an Irken factory with real parts.
This one was made mostly out of garbage and rusting metal.
However, most humans were dumb, so it would do. After all it wasn't meant to fool Dib, just prevent him from interfering.
She held up a single piece of hair, which had been retrieved by the spy bug from Membranes comb the night before.
"With the DNA of this single hair, I will create My Prof. Membrane Clone!" She cackled wildly. "With him on-guard Dib will be powerless to get in my away!"
Meanwhile, an old box TV that Tak had managed to repair played the news.
"Welcome back once again to the Countdown to Peace Day..." And announcer's voice rang out. "I'm Ian Cornish, your host, on this beautiful, sunny day. And joining us for our countdown to Peace Day is Bloaty the Pig. What do you have for us, Bloaty?
"This my special pizza I make just for Peace Day." Bloaty vomits a whole pizza onto a window. The children cheer and a hand is seen grabbing a slice. "It has ten kinds of pizza inside the pizza, so that's pretty good."
The children cheer once more.
Then the screen switches back to the Announcer. "Tonight, at the Prof. Membrane Labs Keynote, we make history again. Prof. Membrane Labs. Who wants a better everything?"
More cheers can be hear.
"Cheer now Earth monkeys, while you still can." Tak spoke gravely as she continued her work. "Because your world is about to change!"
