A/N: Hey guys! Not much to say before this chapter, other than repeating my thanks for Goatsplus for his help on the previous and this chapter. Go check him out if you get the chance!
Charlotte's POV
The day went by like it was nothing. Although Friday is a pretty chill day in most of the subjects. It's a lot of just finishing what we hadn't finished throughout the week; which usually isn't a lot. So the day just went by pretty quick, and I was happy to get home and chill out for the weekend, but then I realised I'm gonna have to wait around a bit before I go home because of try-outs. I guess I might as well just go and watch. I can't be bothered walking home, I'm too tired from the rest of the week. So I just walked out to the football field, and since the bell had only just gone a couple minutes ago it was still about 10 minutes before they started.
I walked out to the fields and surely enough, the only people there were the coaches and instructors setting up, so I just brought myself into the stands, chucked my bag down and sat down. Soon after I sat down I saw Liam and Humphrey walking onto the field, joking and laughing to each other, along with another 15 or so other people. I pulled out my phone to check the time and it was already 3:23pm so there wasn't much longer before they started with the try-outs, especially since basically everyone was there by then.
Liam spotted me in the stands and threw me a wave and a smile and I happily returned it. They just chucked their bags on the sideline and grabbed a ball and started warming up a bit. Out of nowhere Lily and Kate showed up. I didn't think they would be there until I realised their dad was helping out with the try-outs so I guess it's understandable. They spotted me and came up to sit next to me.
"Hey Charlotte," Kate said, "What're you doing here?"
"I'm getting a ride with Liam and Humphrey home. Can't be stuffed walking," I said chuckling.
"Fair enough," Kate said with a slight giggle.
"What brings you here?" I asked, knowing Winston was helping out but I would've thought they would just walk home.
"Dad's helping out, plus we kinda want to watch," Lily said, setting her bag down next to me and setting herself down on the seat.
"Well you want to watch," Kate said, "I just want a ride home."
"You think Garth will still be Quarterback this year?" Lily asked.
"No clue. I don't follow this stuff," I said, stating my lack of knowledge of the sport, "I heard Liam is gonna try it out but if he makes it Garth will probably want to kill him."
"We'll see what happens," Kate said, finally sitting down next to Lily. We just continued to chat about your classic small talk shit while we waited for it to start. A couple more people came onto the field; including Garth, but apart from that nobody else arrived.
Then at 3:32 the whistle blew for everyone to huddle round and they started talking about something that just sounded like mumbled whispers at the distance I was at from the group. Everyone split off into separate groups, which I would think would be the positions people are trying out for. I noticed only 3 or 4 people went for the 'Quarterback' position or whatever it's called. They were a couple of guys that were usually backups from what I've noticed, and of course, Garth and Liam. Garth already knew something was up, I could tell by the look on his face.
I looked up towards Humphrey and he was doing his usual catching stuff. He's pretty good at the position he plays. He's got glue for hands and he's really quick. I hear a lot of people say that about him, but I wasn't focused on him. I was focused on Liam.
I looked back to see they were throwing through tyres which I guess makes sense. You have to be able to throw accurately, and of course, Garth couldn't. He got 9/25 throws, the other two guys got 16/25 and 13/25. However Liam had 18/25 throws he had done. Garth didn't look happy at all. It was clear to see he had a rage, and that rage was for Liam, which he intended to let out that rage on Liam.
They had moved over to another drill which included the receivers by the looks of things. They paired up the Quarterbacks with the receivers and Liam just happened to get with Humphrey which works out well. They worked amazingly as a team, Liam throwing it perfectly just about every time and Humphrey nailing every catch. There was one throw that was off, it was off to the sideline a bit and Humphrey reached out with one of his hands and surely enough, it stuck. He's a fantastic receiver. Garth on the other hand, the only throws he got were long throws, I feel bad for the receiver, who happened to be Jake, from my class. He's got good hands, not the fastest one but he's good. Every throw from Garth was terrible, aside from the very rare occasion he fluked it. I don't know how he made the team last year. I think it was because his dad was the position co-ordinator or whatever it is, so obviously he showed bias.
By the looks of things too, Liam decided to switch things up a bit, and asked one of the instructors to throw him a couple, and he caught both of them with ease, one them with one hand, diving for it even. He was enjoying himself far too much.
Then they moved onto a running drill. 40 yard dash I think is what it's called? I say that because they just run 40 yards as fast as they can.
The two backups did a relatively slow time, being Quarterbacks, they don't really need to be able to run. They both got between 4.8 to 5 second times in it, which isn't bad. Garth went. He set a blistering time for a Quarterback; 4.58 seconds to be exact. He's 18 and running a time like that? That's the only thing I give him credit for. He can run like nobody's ever seen it. For reference, the running back, Remington, however a lot of people just called him Rem, is one of the fastest in the state, and he runs a 4.48. Garth is one fast bitch. Humphrey went up, setting a 4.45. He was even faster than everyone. He was really quick. Liam lined up and went for his run, setting off and getting a solid first run at a 4.67. As he was slowing down from the run I could tell he wasn't happy with it, because he shook his head and frowned, letting out a sigh.
Everyone went back and did another run, Rem setting a 4.50 and Garth setting a 4.57, just barely beating his previous time. Humphrey set a blistering 4.42. Liam went up and set a 4.59. After hearing that go through the speakers, a look of shock came across all of our faces, Lily with her jaw dropped like she just dislocated it. Even after that time, he still had a frown on his face. I'm sorry, but if you aren't happy about a 4.59, what the hell. He was either extremely focused, or he was wanting better.
Everyone went up for their third and final run, Rem setting a new personal best at a 4.46. He's really quick and extremely agile. However, as soon as someone gets a hold on him he's gonna go down. He can't break a tackle but he can evade them. Garth ran a 4.55, also setting a best. Humphrey couldn't best his time and only got a 4.50, due to a bad start off the line. Liam went up like every other time, and was over with his final run quickly. I was waiting for the time to come from the speakers.
"Liam Jackson, 4.53," we heard from the speakers. Garth was not happy. Not one bit. He knew he wasn't gonna get the spot. He knew he was screwed for this season, and that time just sealed his fate. Liam finally lifted the frown from his face and was met with a lot of cheers from the other players, including Humphrey sharing a massive hug with him, Liam still puffing from the run.
Garth had lost any chance of a scholarship to any college at this point, as if he was going to get one anyway with his terrible performances at games, but now, there was 0 chance whatsoever, since I would be surprised if he even made the team.
I felt weirdly intrigued by all of this, it's like something clicked in my head and I know what's happening now. I don't know why I didn't like this before, because it's really interesting. Kate and Lily were still shocked from the time Liam set. The fact that anyone would attempt to challenge Garth for his position is a ballsy move in itself, but to be faster than him, that's something else.
I missed a lot of the other positions drills because I was too focused on Garth and Liam, but it was worth it. That was spectacular. They let everyone go off and relax for a bit since the try-out itself was over but the coaches just needed time to pick a first team for the season. I heard that they will change the roster a couple times when they hit the practices, but first they just go off how well they do in try-outs, which is understandable.
Liam and Humphrey came up the stands, still trying to catch their breaths from the extensive workout they just went through, and expectedly, were sweating like pigs.
"That was really fun," Liam said with a chuckle, "I hope they pick me for the team. Even if I get second or third string I'll be happy."
"Second or third string? Liam you were performing like a starter out there, if not more," Humphrey mentioned, "I'm sure, without a doubt they'll pick you."
"Thanks man," He replied, sharing a smile with him.
"Anyway, ladies, and Charlotte," Humphrey said, chuckling, "How was the show? Enjoy it?"
"Hell yes," Lily said, "That was awesome. Garth finally got put in his bloody place, the annoying bastard. Remington was amazing too. He's so quick and agile." She'd always had a crush on Rem. Kate tended to tease her about it a lot, but not now, which surprised me.
"Yeah, I have a feeling I know who the starters are going to be," Kate said, looking at Humphrey and they both shared a quick smile.
"I'll have to go to the games more often," I said, "That was so fun to watch."
"If you think that was fun to watch, wait till the games. They are awesome," Lily mentioned.
"EVERYONE! COME HERE!" Winston shouted. Liam and Humphrey got back up and jogged back down. Lily, Kate and I decided we'd go down and see who's gonna be starting. Everyone gathered, around the coaches and we stood behind them listening in.
"Alrighty everyone. We all did really good out there today," Coach Mathers said, "but we all know, only some of you will get to start. We've managed to come up with a decision on the offensive side, but we're still thinking about defence, so we'll have to email the defensive players when we decide. Sorry guys.
"However, on the offensive side, we still have our boys on the line, August, Barry, Veck, Billy, and Owen. Tight end is the same too, with Regan still there. Congrats guys," He said, giving them all handshakes.
"Moving onto the receivers. Receivers are going to be Jake, Humphrey, Jackson, and Kehaan. Welcome to the team Kehaan, the rest of you were here last year, so you know the drill. Make him feel welcome, blah blah. Running-backs are gonna be none other than our good ol' boy Rem at Half-back, and Christian at Full-back.
"Quarterback was a good fight this year. We had four runners, Corey, David, Garth, and a new boy from New Zealand, Liam. Fourth string is David. Sorry David."
"It's alright, don't worry about it." David said, nodding and giving the coach a handshake.
"Third string was tough, but we've decided to give it to Garth this year. Just not your year Garth, sorry," Coach Mathers said, holding his hand out for a handshake. Garth just glared at him. After glaring at him for a solid 10 seconds, Garth just up and left in a huff.
"Okay then. I guess he's gonna be fourth string," he said with a chuckle writing something on the piece of paper, "and first string was also tough. It was pretty close, but a certain 40 yard dash time sealed it completely for us..." Liam's face did nothing but light up.
"With a 40 yard dash of 4.53, Liam Jackson, welcome to our team. You are the starting quarterback for this season," He said smiling and holding his hand out for a handshake.
"Forget a handshake coach, bring it in," Liam said chuckling and bring Coach Mathers in for a hug, everyone clapping for their new teammate. He released his grasp from the coach and turned to face the team.
"I'm not good at speeches or anything so I'm just gonna make this short," He said getting a couple laughs from the group, "I'm happy to be a part of the team, and I can't wait to start working with ya'll. It's gonna be one hell of a season boys."
"It's awesome to have you on our team, Liam," Coach said, "Now everyone can go home now. Thanks for wasting your time!" That last sentence earned a good laugh from everyone.
No-ones POV
Garth wants revenge, and he wants it bad. He was filled with rage, and it was going to unleash.
"He'll pay," Garth said to himself, sitting in his 2003 Chevy Camaro, in the parking lot of the school, "He'll fucking pay..."
