Charlotte's POV
I woke up the Sunday morning kinda early, as it was coming up 7am. There was a small amount of sunlight beaming through the crack in the curtains, which just happened to shine on my face, blinding me a little bit. I sat up on the side of my bed after throwing the blankets off, and it was bloody cold. It was March though so it makes sense. It's pretty early into Spring.
I quickly rummaged through my clothes and found a grey hoodie and a pair of black sweatpants. Since it was the weekend I really didn't care what I wore, plus these were comfortable too. After putting on said clothing, I made my way down to the kitchen to look for something for breakfast. Since nobody else was really awake I just made some toast and sat down on the couch. After flicking through the channels on the TV I found a replay for an NCAA game that happened yesterday. 'Fuck it, I'll watch it,' I thought to myself with a face full of toast.
I don't know many of the teams in the NCAA, but I knew one of the teams playing was Boise State. One of my cousins got a scholarship for Football there, so he moved down to Idaho a couple years ago. I actually saw him a couple times playing. He played on the defensive side and I think he was a Safety? Not entirely sure. He was either a Safety or a Linebacker. He was pretty good too. Last year was his Freshman year at the university but he still managed a lot of tackles and interceptions on the season. I think he actually took two of the interceptions for touchdowns last year.
I heard someone coming down the stairs and as I turned around it was dad coming down.
"Morning, dad," I said turning back around to watch the TV.
"Morning Charlotte, how'd you sleep?" he replied coming towards the couch.
"Eh, I've had better to be honest," I said, shrugging my shoulders, "You?"
"Yeah I'm a bit the same," He said, shaking his head a bit and looking up to the TV, "Oh, Nebraska verse Boise State. I was watching that yesterday until I heard about Humphrey. Have you seen Andy playing?" Andy was my cousin.
"Yeah I saw him a couple times. He's number 49 isn't he?" I asked, dad sitting down on the couch next to me.
"Yeah he is. He's doing really well down in Idaho," he said, right as Andy intercepted a pass and taking it back for a touchdown, "Fuck yeah, Pick Six."
"The hell does Pick Six mean?" I asked, confused but laughing a bit at dad's enthusiasm.
"Pick Six is when someone intercepts a pass and takes it for a touchdown," He replied, "He's got some wheels. He's really quick for a Linebacker." Welp, that solves my question about which position he played.
"Oh, okay. Yeah that makes sense," I said, continuing to watch the game.
"Since when were you interested in Football? I thought you didn't like sports?" Dad asked as the Nebraska offense lined up again after the interception taken back for a touchdown.
"Ever since I saw the try-outs at school I kinda picked up an interest in it," I said, as Andy sacked the Quarterback.
"Bloody hell, Andy's on fire this game," He said, but getting back on topic rather quickly, "Oh okay. Yeah, I heard Garth isn't starting anymore."
"Liam took his spot, actually. Liam's starting this season," I said, Dad looking a bit surprised.
"Really? I didn't know he played Football," He said, chuckling.
"Yeah he does. Humphrey also got in as Receiver like he usually does. He set the fastest 40 yard time at the try-outs too," I said, still keeping my focus on the game.
"What time did he set?"
"I think it was a 4.42, I don't remember exactly what it was but it was really fast. Remington came pretty close too. Somewhere around the 4.45 mark."
"Damn. Humphrey can catch really well too. He's really well-rounded for his position. Remington is the elusive little shit isn't he?" He said that last sentence with a little chuckle.
"Yeah, that's him. I noticed he can't get out of a tackle to save his life, but he can avoid getting into them really well," I said, giggling a bit at Dad's remark. At that point we just fell silent and kept watching the game.
At around 7:50ish, I heard a knock at the door. Odd. Who would be knocking on doors this early?
"I'll get it," I said getting off the couch and making my way to the door. As I opened the door I was greeted with a bright smile from Liam.
"Morning, Charlotte," He said, continuing to smile. I jumped a bit seeing him here, especially this early.
"Oh god, Liam," I said jumping back a bit, "I did not expect you to come around. What brings you here this early?" If I knew he were coming I would've worn something a little more... than this.
"Sorry if i scared you a bit," He said chuckling, "I'm just dropping my brother off at work, and I was gonna stop in to see Humphrey on the way back. Just wondered if you might want to tag along?" He asked, gesturing to his car, still running, in the driveway, with what I assumed was his brother sitting in the front seat.
"I was planning on going down later on, but sure, why not," I said, about to walk out the door, then remembering I hadn't done anything this morning in terms of fixing my hair, so it was a complete mess, "Do you mind if I just fix my hair up a bit? It's kinda messy at the moment."
"I don't mind, I thought it looked cute, but sure," He said, giving me another smile.
"Aww, thank you. I don't think I've had anyone say that to me before," I said, making my way to the bathroom, "I won't be a minute, don't worry." He nodded and made his way back out to the car. I looked in the bathroom mirror and looked at myself for a second, 'How does he think this is cute?' I thought to myself. I wasn't going to burden myself with the question though, as I didn't want to waste too much time.
I was done relatively quickly, brushing my hair and tying it in a ponytail and putting on some deodorant. I made my way back out and realised I might want to tell my parents where I'm going.
"I'm just going to go see Humphrey with Liam. I'll see ya later," I said making my way to the front door.
"Okay honey. Tell us how he's doing when you get the chance," Dad said, making himself a coffee and getting back to the Football game.
"I will," I said, waving back to him. I made my way out to the car and sat in the back of the car. Liam then reversed out of the driveway and made his way down the road.
"So who's this?" Liam's brother said eating a granola bar, "Your girlfriend or something?" He continued with a snicker, causing me to blush a little bit.
"Ethan, when was the last time I had a girlfriend?" Liam asked, looking at him.
"When you were like 12 or 13," He replied.
"What makes you think I've got a girlfriend after a week of being here?" Liam continued.
"Good point," he said, nodding his head, "Well are you going to answer my question then?" Liam then looked in the rear-view mirror, looking at me.
"Charlotte, this is the most annoying, most rude, most lazy person you'll ever meet," Liam said, causing me to giggle, "My brother, Ethan, and Ethan this is Charlotte."
"Nice to meet you Charlotte. All I can say is don't get in bed with Liam, he's got a dwarf for a dick," Ethan said, causing them to laugh, but me to just blush more than I already was.
"Shut up, you little shit," Liam said, punching him in the shoulder and looking back in the rear-view mirror, "What'd I say?" He said, referring to what he said about Ethan. I just giggled and nodded, agreeing with him. A couple minutes we arrived at Huggin's Car Dealership, which I assume is where Ethan works.
"Thanks Liam. I'll see you later," Ethan said, grabbing his things and exiting the car.
"See ya later," Liam replied, waving, then turning to me and continued, "You wanna sit in the front or you gonna stay back there?"
"I'll sit in the front. Much more comfortable than the back seat," I said, chuckling a bit and proceeding to get out and walk around the car, jumping in the front seat.
"Yeah the front seat is much more comfortable than the back seats, especially in this car," He said, pulling out onto the road, me getting comfortable in the seat. He proceeded to turn the volume on the radio up with the CD he had playing. Aside from the radio playing, the ride was rather silent, so I decided to ask a question to break the silence.
"Liam?" I asked, getting his attention. He proceeded to make an audible sound to let me know I had his attention, "Where are your parents? I noticed that you never talk about them and I kinda noticed your parents are never at your house." A frown immediately formed on his face, which made me worried I upset him.
"Well… That's because I kinda… don't have parents…" He said, scratching the back of his neck nervously.
"Why? What happened to them?" I asked, my curiosity taking over.
"They… uhm… they uh…" He replied slowly, "Listen, can we please talk about this a different time?"
"They what?" My curiosity was still outweighing my consideration. He stayed silent, not answering my question, which should've made me stop, but it didn't, "Liam? What happe-" He cut me off.
"They died! There!" He shouted, snapping at me, "They died 3 years ago in a damn house fire that I started! Are you fucking happy now?!" I was too stunned to say anything.
He proceeded to pull over on the side of the road, and plant his face into the steering wheel, covering the rest of his head with his arms. I went to say something but he continued before I could start.
"I started a fire by accident when I was 15 and the house went up like it was nothing. I couldn't get them out in time," He said, loudly sobbing into the steering wheel.
"Liam, I-" He proceeded to get out of the car and sit on the curb, continuing to cry into his arms. 'I'm such an idiot,' I thought to myself.
I got out of the car to see him staring at a picture intensely, tears still streaming down his face. Upon closer inspection, it was a photo of what looked to be him with his parents. It was him, a female, grey wolf, very similar to what Liam looked like, and a male wolf with a much darker shade of grey and with white under is neck, similar to what Ethan looked like, but still quite a difference between them.
"Liam, I'm sor-" I started to say, but was cut off rather quickly.
"No, I'm sorry, Charlotte. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that," He said, still staring at the photo, with me sitting next to him on the curb.
"I shouldn't have kept asking you about it," I said, tears welling up in my eyes, "I'm such an idiot," I continued, bursting out crying.
"You're not an idiot Charlotte," Liam said, putting the photo back in his phone case and bringing me into a hug, burying my head into his chest. Through all of this Liam still had tears streaming down his face, "Everyone gets curious." I was too busy crying to answer. He just held me there, rubbing my back and running his hand through my hair, which relaxed me rather quickly, somehow.
He brought my head up to meet his eyes with mine, wiping away what tears were left on my face.
"I'm sorry, Liam," I said, feeling like I was gonna start crying again.
"It's alright, Charlotte. Don't worry," He said, bringing me back into his chest.
"No it's not," I said, starting to cry again.
"Charlotte, look at me," He said, bringing me up from his chest, "It's okay. You were gonna find out sooner or later anyway."
"Are you sure?" I asked, somewhat sobbing.
"Yes, I'm sure," He said, wiping away my tears again.
"Okay," I said, still clinging onto him and burying my head deeper into his chest. I didn't want to let go. It felt so warm and cosy.
"Now, I think we should get going," Liam said, trying to get out of the hug, but I just held him tighter, "Do you not want to go see Humphrey yet?" I just shook my head, "Do you wanna go to the park for a bit then?" I nodded, "Okay, well either way, you're gonna have to let go of me."
"I don't wanna," I said, mostly muffled by his chest.
"Come on, Charlotte," He said, trying to shake me off a bit.
"No. I'm comfortable like this," I said, still being muffled.
"Well, we can do this at the park, and not on the side of the road," He said, finally getting me to let go.
"Ugh, fine," I said, walking back to the car and getting in, him following suit.
"So park it is?" He asked, I just nodded, to which he nodded back and we made our way to the park. 'I like him, don't I?' I thought to myself.
