Over the next few days, I am too distracted to focus on the rest of the school year. My mind is reeling with thoughts about what both All Might and my mom had told me. About my father's power. Even in class, I am zoned out as our teacher finished off the day. I almost did not hear him call out my name as the class ended for the day.
"Dakota? Bakugo?" The teacher calls as everyone else exits the class room. "Can I see you both for a moment before you leave?"
I raise an eyebrow nodding. Gathering my books, I move to stand in front of his desk next to Bakugo who gives me an evil sideways glance.
The teacher smiles at us. "I am so proud that no only one, but two of our students made it into U.A." He shuffles some papers on his desk. "Make us proud you two."
I return his smile with a bow. "I am sure we will sir." I give Bakugo a mischievous grin which he returned with his own hateful glare. My gaze returns to our teacher. "Now if you could excuse me, my mom will be home soon, and I have to be home by the time she does."
With one last nod to him and a wink to Bakugo, I work my way out of the school.
"Hey, Speed Freak!" Bakugo's deep voice bellows from behind me.
"What do you want, Bakugo?" I growl. I had a feeling that he would confront me about the entrance exam.
His hand sparking lashes out towards me as I turn around. His movements then turn sluggish as I turn my shoulders. Bakugo's hand slides past me. I move to stand behind him.
He stumbles trying to right himself. "Who do you think you are? I'm supposed to be the only one from this school to make it into U.A." He growls turning to face me. His hands spark more.
I shrug. "You're not the only one with dreams of being the Number One hero, Bakugo. So, you'll just have to get over it and accept that we will both be there together." I give him another smirk. "Maybe you can try to keep up." With a chuckle, I take off down the street leaving Bakugo in a trail of dust.
My chest is filled with a rush as I shoot down the streets and back alleyways. Running with my Sonic Quirk always gave me a sense of peace and calmness. Before I knew it, I tried to slide to a stop only to slam into the trash cans sitting outside of our house.
"Ouch." I grumble rubbing my head.
My mom appears in front of the gate. She slides her mask onto the top of her head. "You ok, Dakota?" She sets one of the trash cans back into place right next to the front gate.
I nod standing up. "I'm fine mom. Just a little hiccup in my Quirk. That's all." I set the last can next to the other one.
She frowns before nodding. "We will work on your Quirk between now and the beginning of the new school year." A small smile spreads across her face. "U.A. is going to be tough. So, you'll need to be as ready as you can be."
I nod. "I'll be ready, mom. I will work as hard as I must."
She laughs lightly wrapping an arm around my neck. "But right now, lets relax and eat. I know you're hungry." As if on que, my stomach growls. We share a laugh before heading into the house.
Over the next month or so, I worked with both my mom and All Might. Mom helped me with getting a handle on the new speed behind my Sonic Quirk while All Might helped me understand One For All better. I still couldn't work up the courage to use my Animorphing Quirk yet.
Before I knew it, it was the first day at U.A. Nervousness spreads through my body. I don't know who will be in my class this year. Hopefully Bakugo will not be in my class. I can't stand him and his inferiority complex.
I wander the halls looking for my classroom. Classroom 1-A.
"Here we go." I mutter pushing open the door.
There are 19 other students in the room. The first one I notice is of course Bakugo and his loudmouth.
"Get your feet off the desk! You disgrace our upper classman!" A taller boy scolds Bakugo.
Bakugo scoffs. "Did your old school put a stick up your ass or something? I'm going to have fun ripping you a new one." His eyes then land on me, and he sneers.
"You're always so loud, Bakugo. Maybe tune it down a bit. Maybe someone will listen to you." I state moving to an empty desk. Bakugo sneers at me.
The pink skinned girl, Ashido, skips up to me. "Hey. Dakota, right?" Her voice is so cheerful and happy, that I could not help but smile. I give her a nod. "I saw what you did at the entrance exam. That was amazing! How are you feeling?"
I shrug sitting down in my seat. She takes the desk next to mine. "I'll live. I've healed."
She winks at me. "Good. That was amazing though. How you saved that girl."
Before I could reply, Bakugo storms up and stands in front of my desk. I glance up at him calmly. "What the hell do you want, Katsuki?"
Before Bakugo could make his remark, a taller man steps into the room and looks over the whole class. He wore a set of black clothes that looks almost like a jumpsuit with a tannish scarf around his neck. He almost looks tired. As if he did not want to be here.
"You still have not shut up yet." He states reaching into a yellow sleeping bag. "That's not going to work. My name is Shota Aizawa. You're homeroom teacher."
My eye twitched at that. He is our teacher? I ask myself. He looks more like someone who would sleep all day every day.
He pulls out a set of uniforms. Mostly blue with a white pattern that had a U on the top part and an A on the pants part. "Put these on and meet me outside."
Everyone grabs a uniform before heading towards the changing rooms. Once everyone was changed, we all gather outside next to what looks like a baseball homebase.
I raise my hand as Aizawa steps in front of us. "Sir? What are we doing out here? Isn't the orientation supposed to be starting soon?"
"Yeah." Another brown-haired girl piped up. "We're going to miss it!" She protested.
Aizawa had his back to us. "U.A. does not follow the normal academic path." He turns to look at us. "Which means I can run my class how I see fit." He smirks mischievously. "When you all were in junior high, you weren't able to see what your maximum potential could be." He tosses a baseball with bluish tape around it to Bakugo. "How far could you throw a softball in junior high?"
Bakugo raises an eyebrow catching the ball. "About 50 meters I think."
Aizawa pulls a small pager out of his pocket. "Try using your quirk this time." Bakugo steps up to the plate holding the ball. "Anything goes. Just stay in the circle."
Bakugo smirks as he winds up his arm. A moment later, he launches the ball into the air with a massive explosion. The ball streaks through the air far into the distance. There's a beep as the ball bounces off the ground.
"We need to see what your maximum potential is." Aizawa states showing the pager to us.
Everyone gasps.
"705.2 meters!?" A spiky red-haired boy speaks out. "That is insane."
Aizawa turns to face the class fully. "You will compete in a series of eight tests to gauge your potential. The one in last place will be expelled immediately. So, let's begin."
Everyone gasps. Protests rise up from the other students.
"You can't expel us!" The brown haired girl protests. "We just got here!"
The mischievous smirk returns from Aizawa. "As I said, I get to run my class how I see fit." He uses a finger and beckons us forward. "Show me it's no mistake that you are here."
I smirk hearing the different tests we would have to take. A 50-meter dash, grip strength test, a standing long jump, repeated side steps, ball throw, distance run, seated toe-touch, and sit ups. The dash and the distance run would be a piece of cake. Some of the others would be easy if… I shake my head. No, I am still not confident yet.
"Lets do this." I whisper to myself.
First up was the 50-meter dash. Aizawa lines us up in pairs to make the dash. I groan inwardly at the fact that I was paired up with Bakugo.
I stood there tapping my foot rapidly watching the others use their quirks to make the dash. The fastest one was the tall guy with glasses. He had engines embedded in his calves. I take up a runner stance when it is mine and Bakugo's turn.
I smirk over at Bakugo. "Try to keep up, Bakugo." I state as the timer counts down for us to start.
He growls at me. "Out of the way, Speed Freak!"
Once the timer strikes zero, my body moves into motion. Bakugo's movements become sluggish again as the fire explodes from his palms. My feet smack the dirt as I take off down the lane. I slide to a stop past the machine at the end.
"Three point zero zero seconds!" A robotic voice calls.
I jog in place for a moment as Bakugo flies over the line. He glares at me.
"Wow! That was even faster than Ida!" Ashido calls jogging up to me. "You're quick on your feet, aren't you?"
I chuckle. "You could say that."
The tall boy with the engines adjusts his glasses and gives me a nod. "I guess I will have some competition when it comes to speed. I'm Tenya Ida by the way." He tells me as everyone moves to the next tests.
"Dakota Martin." I introduce. "And I guess you will. Don't take it to hard if I leave you in the dust."
He gives me a small smile. "I think I'll keep up just fine."
The next few tests I did alright on. I could not use my Quirk to get any advantage on other than the long-distance run. Ida and I are the first two to the end of it. I inched out only by a hair.
Finally, the last test was up. The ball throw. I did not have any kind of advantage in this one, but I had an idea on how to get some force behind my throw. Coincidently, I am the first one up for this one.
My hands move over the surface of the ball as I look into the distance. I hop in place. After a moment, I start running in a tight circle around the plate in the middle. I get some speed going before I slide around the last turn of the circle, pulling my arm back, and letting the ball rip with as much force and speed as I could muster from my build up.
The ball streaks in an arc through the air. It was almost hard to keep up with it from how fast it flew through the air. It hits the ground causing a beep from Aizawa's pager.
"705.5 meters." Aizawa states, showing me the pager.
I smirk shaking my legs out. They were starting to ache a bit from using it this much. I might have been working with my mom on my quirk, but it still has its limits.
"Wow. That was even further than Bakugo's throw." The rest of the class murmured.
I move over to a bench that was set nearby and almost collapse onto it. Ashido takes a seat next to me.
"You alright?" She asks. Her shoulder lightly brushes against mine.
I smile nodding. "Yeah. Overuse of my quirk will cause my legs and muscles to break from the force, but I'm fine. Thanks for asking, Ashido." I study her for a moment. She has small tannish horns poking through her pink hair. Her pink irises are surrounded by black. "You're not doing to badly yourself with your Quirk. What is it again?"
She giggles. "We simply call it Acid. I can secrete acid from my body." To emphasize this, grey fluid drips from her fingertips sizzling against the dirt. "But yours is amazing. Having speed like that must be cool."
I give her a nod. "Yeah. It's a rush alright." I state simply grinning at her. My forked tongue slithers out before slipping back between my teeth. My hand snaps to my mouth covering it as Ashido's eyes widen. My head whips around. No one else had seen it. Only Ashido did.
"Wha…?" She stammers.
I look away. "Just forget you saw that." I mutter. Luckily for me, Aizawa starts talking again.
"That is the end of the tests. I will show you your results. There is no need to go over each and every score." Aizawa states. A hologram pops up in front of him ranking all of us based off our scores in the tests. With a glance, I notice that my name is in 4th place despite my doing average in all but the running tests and the ball throw. "And no one is getting expelled. It was just a lie to get you all to do your hardest." He gives us a small smile. "Tomorrow starts your real training. So be prepared. Class is dismissed." He turns his gaze to me noticing me holding my hand over my mouth. "You ok, Dakota?"
I nod before hurrying away. My hands are still clasped over my mouth. I hear Ashido calling my name, but I did not stop. As quickly as I could, I change out of the gym uniform before heading out the front doors of the school.
"Dakota!" Ashido calls behind me. She jogs up next to me. A look of concern is plastered on her face. "You ok? What happened earlier with…" She points at her mouth.
My hands grip the straps on my backpack. My eyes will not meet hers as we walk down the steps of the school.
"Please don't tell anyone." I plead softly. "No one outside of my mom and one other friend knows about that." I sigh looking up at her. For some reason, I could feel that I could trust her.
She smiles nodding slightly. "It'll be our little secret. So what is that about anyway? It almost reminds me of a snake's tongue."
My shoulders slump. "I inherited my father's snake tongue and eyes. I am usually able to keep them hidden, but it slipped out during class."
Ashido raises an eyebrow. "Snake eyes? Your eyes look normal to me."
"I wear contacts to hide those." My fingers fumble around my eyes. The contacts slip out of my eyes. I have to blink after they're out. Everything brightens a bit without the contacts.
Ashido gasps. "They are slitted like a snake!" She grins at me. "That is amazing!"
"Really?!" I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
She nods almost bouncing on the balls of her feet. "Yeah, but I promise I will not tell anyone. Though why do you hide them?"
I carefully place the contacts back in blinking a bit. "It's complicated." Was all I could muster. I couldn't meet her gaze again.
I feel her stuff a piece of paper into my hand. My eyebrow raises opening my hand to look at the paper. It had a number scrawled on it. I look up at her curiously. She is smiling at me.
"Well I love stories. Text me if you ever want to talk about it. Ok?" She states turning to hurry after the bus that had stopped a little way down the street. She waves back at me. "I will see you tomorrow, Dakota!"
I stare after her for a moment before I turn to finish the walk home. My mom is already home making dinner. Entering the house, I drop my backpack by the front door and slip out of my tennis shoes.
"I'm home, mom!" I call entering the kitchen and taking a seat at the kitchen table.
My mom smiles at me. "How was your first day at U.A., honey?" She wipes her hands off on a hand towel before taking the seat across from me.
My hand scratches my neck nervously. "It was… stressful to say the least. My homeroom teacher is Mr. Aizawa."
She winces at the mention of Aizawa. "He's a strict one alright, but it sounds like you had an interesting day. Make any new friends?" She gets back up and starts making us plates.
My cheeks burn slightly at the question. "Yeah. You could say that. The pink hair girl from the entrance exam… the one you said checked on me after…"
She squeaked placing the plates on the table. "Oh my son has his first crush!"
"Mom! It's not like that! It was only the first day!" I protest, pulling my plate closer to me. So as to not answer any more questions, I start stuffing my mouth with food.
She chuckles at me and my bright face. "So cute. Well after you finish eating, I would relax for a bit before heading to bed. You thought day one was rough. It's only going to get harder from here."
I nod swallowing my mouthful of food. "I will, mom." Once I had scarfed the rest of my food down, I clean the dishes and change into my sleep clothes. I lay in bed staring at the ceiling for who knows how long before I drift off into dream land.
