Holly J lightly snapped her bracelet against her wrist anxiously as she stood outside Toby's house. Her day had been utterly terrible, from getting in a fight she wasn't anticipating to getting suspended from school for three days. Somehow through it all she still thought about Toby and felt sort of bad for it all. It wasn't about him at all. She felt threatened by Manny and had to get more threatening back. She wasn't sure what exactly to say to him, but three days felt like too long and her sister knew where he lived through Ashley many years ago, so here she was.
The longer she stood there, the worse she was developing cold feet. She sighed, muttered "Get it together Holly J" to herself and then started walking down the sidewalk to head home. Unfortunately for her, her cover was blown, because Toby was at the opposite end of the sidewalk walking back to his house.
You could hear the surprise in his voice as he called out to her. "Holly J?"
Holly J froze and whispered "shit". She turned around and looked at him.
"Wha… what are you doing here?" Toby asked. He had already accepted anything involving Holly J talking to him in a way that didn't involve bullying wasn't happening in the near future.
"I'm sure you heard my day was eventful," Holly J started.
"Yeah, a whole cat fight happening because I'm too pathetic to go to prom with didn't help my day either," Toby sadly stated.
Holly J shook her head. "That wasn't.. no one gave me a chance to answer that question. And for the record, I don't think you're pathetic."
"Could've fooled me," Toby said defensively. "I can list off twenty different names you've called me this school year."
Holly J could see the hurt on his face, the hurt she caused. She knew why she did it. She wanted to stay at the top socially and he was near the bottom. She also realized today, nobody was cheering for her and everybody was in Manny's corner. "You're right. I'm sorry."
Her apology helped him loosen up. He was finally starting to feel heard. "It's okay I just want to know what you're opinion is on that prom thing? I never got the chance to ask you myself."
Holly J smiled, crossed her arms, and looked at the ground. "I don't know. Even without all the social heirachy bullshit, I still don't really know you."
Toby nodded. "Okay so lets change that. We can hang out sometime. If you still aren't on board, I'll leave you alone."
Holly J thought for a second and approved of the idea. "When would we do this hangout?"
Toby's face lit up with excitement. "Well…. you're here, I'm here. I've got nowhere to be. What about you?"
"Haven't you heard I'm free for three days?" Holly J joked.
Toby smiled. "Right. Well let me go get my wallet, I happen to know a place I think you'll enjoy."
Jimmy pushed his front door in as Liberty followed behind him. She looked around his living room, and her first observations were that his parents seemed to do well financially. The furniture, rugs, entertainment system were all very nice and looked like they cost a pretty penny. She wondered what they did for a living but wasn't comfortable asking yet.
Jimmy invited her to make herself at home, so she took a seat on the leather sofa. It was really cool because it had a cup holder built in. He offered her a beverage and brought her a glass of soda.
"You have a really nice place," Liberty complimented. On the wall was a photo collage of various pictures taken at basketball games. There was a photo of Jimmy making a shot, and in the background was J.T. in the mascot uniform with the head off. She stared at it hard for a bit, and Jimmy knew why.
"We kicked Bardell's ass that day," Jimmy noted. "I still remember it very well."
Liberty reminisced on the high school memories. She didn't participate, but it all played a role in making Degrassi what Degrassi was. "Basketball games, Spirit Squad… It didn't mean anything to me and oddly enough I'll miss it when it's gone."
Jimmy grabbed five movies and held them behind his back. "Pick a number one through five."
"Something as important as our first movie date and you're having me pick it at random," Liberty smirked. "Four."
He shook a copy of 'Space Jam' in the air and made his way over to the DVD player. She wasn't thrilled with the movie choice, she would've picked something more romantic, but she liked being with Jimmy so she pretended to be excited. He positioned himself to be next to her and hit play with the remote. As promised, he put his hand around the back of her neck and leaned in and kissed her. She didn't hesitate to reciprocate. She felt wanted and kissing him made her insides melt.
"You're a great kisser," Jimmy moaned. He loved how perfect her lips felt on his.
"You're even better," Liberty smiled.
"We could just skip the homework part of tonight and do this the rest of the night," Jimmy teased. He wasn't serious, but he wished he were.
"I'm considering it," Liberty admitted as they locked eyes.
"I wouldn't let you do that," Jimmy said. He placed his hand on her leg. "There will be a lot more of this in the future."
Liberty placed her hand over his hand and held it as she watched on to whatever was going on in the movie. "So I'm curious, what made you pick this? Is it one of your favorites?"
"Honestly? I grabbed a few at random and hoped for the best. I didn't think the movie would matter much anyway," Jimmy admitted.
Liberty leaned back in for another kiss. "It doesn't."
To Holly J's surprise, Toby took her to an arcade, and she was having a blast. In the couple of hours they spent together she found herself laughing quite a bit. It came out of nowhere how well they hit it off. They were getting ready to wrap it up when she said something that took him off guard.
Holly J looked at him as he was focused on his game. "So, if the offer still stands, I'd like to go to prom with you."
Toby looked back at her. "It was never off the table."
Her face lit with a smile, and Toby was overjoyed that she accepted his invitation to go with him.
Jimmy had his arm around her shoulder and her head was resting on his chest. They were both fixated on the film and loving every minute of it, but unfortunately it was at the end credits which meant it was time for her to leave and take care of her responsibilities. That was the absolute last thing she wanted to do at that moment.
"I don't want you to go," Jimmy said softly in her ear.
"I wish I didn't have to," Liberty sulked. "Call me while I do homework?"
Jimmy agreed to and rolled outside to the sidewalk with her. "Let me know when you're home. I'll see you at school tomorrow.
Liberty bent down and gave him a hug and a kiss and started making her way down the street.
