Hi, y'all! Thanks for hanging around to see the end of this story! This is the final chapter and gives a glimpse into the future for Rose and Dimitri. Hope y'all enjoy and let me know your thoughts, comments, and opinions!
5 Years Later
"Dimitri?" I called as I walked into our townhouse.
The house was silent. I set my purse on the kitchen island and walked upstairs to where our daughter's bedroom was. Nataliya's bedroom was also empty. I walked back downstairs and started to make lunch while waiting for Dimitri and Taliya to get back.
Less than fifteen minutes later, as I was finishing up cooking lunch, the front door opened, and Dimitri walked in. Nataliya was asleep in his arms, and he quickly smiled at me before carrying her into the living room next to the kitchen. I watched him carefully put her down in the pack n' play that we had in the corner before he crossed back into the kitchen. Dimitri greeted me with a kiss, one that I met with enthusiasm.
"How was work, Roza?" Dimitri asked. He sat down at the kitchen island, and I placed a plate in front of him.
"It was good; we finally got a lot done for the gala that we're putting on in June," I said, sitting down next to him with my own dinner. "How was your day with Taliya?"
Dimitri worked on a rotation schedule with his practice where he worked Monday – Thursday 8am – 5pm, and then every other Friday from 8am to 1pm. Today was one of his off Fridays, so he usually stayed with Taliya instead of us using our nanny.
"Also good," he said, pausing to take a bite of his grilled chicken. "We spent the morning playing in the garden, and then I took her to Central Park for a walk and to play on the playground before lunch. Nala should be asleep for another fifteen minutes or so. She fell asleep shortly after we left the park."
I glanced at my watch. "Okay, that should give us enough time for Taliya to eat a small lunch before we have to leave for my appointment. We're going to their Chelsea location today."
Dimitri nodded. "With traffic, I'd say at thirty minutes, so we'd need to leave by 1:30."
Dimitri stood and took both of our plates, loading them into the dishwasher. I glanced over at where Taliya was sleeping and saw her starting to stir. Dimitri took the box of macaroni that I offered him and started to cook Taliya's lunch.
"I can't believe Taliya's going to be two tomorrow," I said, glancing over at Dimitri. "Where has the time gone?"
Dimitri smiled at me. "She's growing up so fast," he admitted. "It makes me understand what everybody says now about children."
"Time really does fly," I said.
"Yes, it does," Dimitri said, crossing the kitchen to wrap his arms around me. He placed his hands on my pregnant belly. "It's crazy to think that in a few months, we'll be the parents of two."
An hour later, we were sitting in the waiting room for my OB/GYN, Dr. Leonard, to call us back. Dimitri was on the ground playing with Taliya and the building blocks while we were waiting, and as the door swung open to the back, Dimitri scooped her up. We were the only other ones in the waiting room, so it was clear that they were calling me back even before they said my name.
In the room, Dimitri sat with Taliya on his lap while I got up on the table and prepared myself for the ultrasound.
Our technician, Jill, walked into the room a few moments later, a smile on her face. "Are y'all ready to find out the sex of your baby?"
"So ready," I said. "My guess is a boy."
Dimitri shook his head. "It's definitely a girl."
Jill laughed. "Well, we'll find out in a few moments." She picked up the ultrasound gel and the wand. "Ready, Rose?"
I nodded, preparing myself for the cold gel. To my surprise, the gel was warm. Jill moved the wand around for a few moments before smiling and freezing the picture on the screen. She turned it towards us so that Dimitri and I could see.
"Looks like mother's intuition is right. You're having a boy," Jill said.
Dimitri and I shared a smile. Despite our little bet, we were happy regardless of the sex of our kid.
Jill continued moving the wand around, marking measurements. After a moment, she frowned and moved the wand a little more.
"Will y'all give me a second?"
She didn't wait for an answer to put the wand down and walk out of the room. She returned a few minutes later with Dr. Leonard in tow.
"Is everything okay?" I asked. Dimitri reached out a squeezed my hand.
"Everything's fine," Dr. Leonard said. "Jill just wanted me to double-check something."
She picked up the wand and replaced it on my belly. She stared intently at the screen as she moved the wand, before freezing the image and turning the screen around so that we could see it again.
"Congratulations," she said. "You're having twins. It appears that Baby B decided to hide behind Baby A during your first ultrasound."
"Twins?" Dimitri said, stunned.
Jill glanced at the screen before looking back at us. "Looks like mom and dad are both right. You're having a boy and a girl."
Dimitri and I shared a look. Lord help us.
A month later, Dimitri and I were preparing for our gender reveal in our garden. Friends and family were mingling in the garden and in and out of the basement/first floor of our house. Lissa was coordinating most of the party, thankfully, but Dimitri and I were still the only two to know about the gender and the surprise of the twins.
Taliya was running around the garden, stealing the show. Zoya and Katya were following Taliya around and playing with her.
When it came time to do the reveal, Dimitri scooped up Taliya and brought her to the front with us. Dimitri picked up one of the poppers, while I grabbed the other. Sharing a smile, we released the dyed powder from within the poppers. Dimitri helped Taliya release it from his popper. The blue powder went into the area, quickly followed by the pink from Dimitri's popper.
The cheers quickly turned to confused questions as I kissed Dimitri and took Taliya from him. I waited for the group to figure it out, and it didn't take long. Lissa and my mom were the first to get it.
"Twins!" they screamed at the same time.
I laughed. "Yes, we're having twins. A boy and a girl."
"Trust us, it was a shock to us too," Dimitri said dryly.
As people came forward to congratulate us, I set Taliya back on the ground so she could run around with Zoya and Katya again.
Lissa cornered me later, and my parents weren't far behind her.
"I can't believe you've kept this a secret for a month!"
"Trust me," I said. "I can't believe we've been able to keep it a secret for a month either."
Lissa laughed. "Have y'all already picked out names?"
I shared a smile with Dimitri across the garden. "Yes."
Lissa pouted when she realized that I wasn't going to tell her what they were.
"You'll find out in a few months," I teased.
On July 17, Emilia Dimitrievna Belikova and Mikhail Dimitrievich Belikov were born. They were a month early and two of the most perfect things in the world.
If someone would have asked me nine years ago if I thought that I would marry my college boyfriend and have three children with him, I would have laughed. But now I can't imagine any other future.
