The Preacher-From a Working Girl's Perspective M7 OW
It had been a pretty busy afternoon for us working girls. When we saw Josiah Sanchez riding toward the 'town' though, we all gave a smile.
The preacher is good company and we'll all make time for him if we can. He's a big man and can look pretty intimidating to most folks, but he's really kind and considerate to us. He has a voice that will make you stop in your tracks to listen to him, and a wide smile that's contagious. If Josiah's happy, it puts everybody in a good mood.
He says he was a priest once, but that he had a little trouble turning the other cheek. I think that the celibacy part of it must have been a bit of a problem as well, 'cause the preacher does like and appreciate women.
He's a treat to be with. He's polite and respectful, and he always has a compliment for you. He makes sure not to drink too much when he's here, too. I've never seen it myself, but I've heard from others that he can get pretty wild when he's had a lot of the hard stuff. He can go "old testament" too if he sees someone mistreating one of us. He doesn't tolerate rough or inconsiderate behavior if he's around. I did see him grab a man and nearly squeeze him into unconsciousness one time, and he didn't even break a sweat doin' it. But he's gentle and careful with us, and always tries to take his time. He's been around a while, so he knows what women like and he makes sure we get enjoyment as well as himself.
A world traveler, he has some interesting stories too, and will sometimes spend almost an hour just talking to you and telling tales of his adventures. Of course, he quotes some stuff that is kind-of hard to understand as well. But he's so kind and generous that it doesn't really matter.
Like some of the others, he'll bring flowers occasionally or a necklace with wooden beads that he's carved himself. Sometimes it's candy or dried fruit from the mercantile or fresh vegetables that he's picked. He doesn't use that as payment, however. Even when he's low on funds, he makes sure to leave us our fee, plus a little more if he can afford it. While he's a spiritual man, he doesn't preach to us or try to reform us. Just accepts us like we are and enjoys our companionship. They say Mary Magdalene was a working girl, so I reckon he figures he's in good company even with us.
When the 'personal' time is over, he'll even ask if we have anything we need help with or something that needs fixed. He's a right good carpenter, and it's nice to get little things repaired when he's here. He even mended the rails on one of the beds once. Of course, he helped crack it too, truth be known. He may be gentle, but he gets a little enthusiastic sometimes and he learned a lot of interesting stuff in his travels to India and such. That and the generosity are some of the reasons he's popular with us girls.
Once he's done, he'll give one of his big grins and wrap a powerful arm around you in a hug. He's always careful not to squeeze too hard, since he knows he can break a man's back if he tries. And the rumor is that he's killed a lot of men, but he says he's doing his penance now. I guess helping other folks and keeping the peace is his way of making things right the best he can.
While he looks . . . and is . . . dangerous, there's a lot more to him than just size and strength. It's well worth the time to get to see him from another perspective, and all us girls are more than happy when we're given that opportunity!
