As I said, for the sake of the plot, Oin and Thorin aren't family.
Again, sorry for the long wait, but we have had a few more lessons on how past tenses work in English, and now i'm insecure about my writing :)
Thank you guys for your comments, they are really motivating! And to answer RandomMusicalCatsBooks- no, there isn't going to be slash later on, as I'm not comfortable writing it
"Mother"
He didn't even think about it, his actions were all instinctive. In one moment, he was looking at the dams, and in the next, he was hugging his mother.
He noticed his siblings came there too, at some point, but that was just an indistinct thought at the back of his mind. Their amad knelt down to be able to hug all three of them.
He didn't know how much time passed. To him, it seemed like hours- but it couldn't have been more than a few minutes.
The dams were given some time to reunite with their families before anyone demanded an explanation, but it was clear that everyone was bursting with curiosity.
...
After he had calmed down, he noticed the details. Well, objectively, they were not details- but to him, everything seemed like a detail in comparison to what was happening right now. His mother was back.
Back to the point- he noticed a few things. Along his mother, Balin's and Dwalin's mother returned. There was a younger dam... her face seemed familiar, but he couldn't really place it. Then there were a few family-friends that he knew very little about. He had seen them talking to his mother quite a few times. It was a long ago, and maybe he was incorrect but he didn't really care.
He forced himself to pay attention as his mother started speaking.
"To start, we were simply having tea when the dragon attacked. We were in a room that was not directly connected with the more open halls- we were simply lucky that the gates to that part of the mountain were closed. We could guess what was happening and acted on it.
We took a few bags and as much food as we could, along with some valuable things we could trade for money if needed and of course more clothes, blankets and any weapons. Then, we took some towels and properly dipped them in the water and, well, with the towels on our noses and mouths, we sneaked out. It wasn't easy and took longer than it should but I'm glad we didn't stay there.
Maybe we could send two or three dwarves to look for any possible survivors? Because I doubt we were the only ones in there..."
The last time.. no one thought about this. Just how much could be changed if someone thought about it? His mother could have been alive. She could've been alive if someone questioned it. But no one did. Thorin's eyes filled with fresh tears as he realised he was at fault too. His mother had a tea party. In closed quarters. He never questioned whether or not she was alive. If he was more hopeful, everything could have been different...
Images flashed through Thorin's mind. 'in a room... glad we didn't stay... doubt we were the only ones...' and it painfully mixed with his own words
When they were being chased by Smaug, they ran into a closed off room. Had his own mother been among those skeletons? The last time, she must have decided to wait. The last time, she probably thought someone will save her. And no one did. Not even her own son thought about her.
He registered that she was currently talking to Dis and Frerin, making sure they were okay. Dis was overjoyed and excited, though much calm than other kids her age, and if Frerin's words sounded a lot older than they should, it was to be expected, right? But still, they shouldn't have been forced to grow up so early...
"Thorin? Thorin, sweetie, are you okay?" His mother broke him from his thoughts
'No, I'm definitely not' "Yes."
"You're thinking a lot, do you want to talk?"
"I missed you.. I thought-" his voice wavered and he stopped, not being able to finish that thought, as if the sentence alone could send her away.
"Shhh, I'm here, and I'm okay. I'm alright"
She pulled him closer to gently press their foreheads together. Thorin leaned into the touch and relaxed at the feeling of her hands running through his hair. She had always done this when his grandfather's words hurt a bit too much, or when the stress of being a royal child got to him...
She cupped his face in her hands and he almost melted in the warmth slowly spreading through his whole body.
...
After a while, a group of dwarves were ready to take off to the mountain, to try and save anyone who wasn't able to get out.
Some time after they've gone, Thror and Thrain returned. Thrain heard that a few of his warriors have gone to Erebor, and didn't even care to hear the rest. He was very angry to hear it (Thror was downright furious) and demanded to see the one who thought they were in the position to give orders.
"I'm afraid that was me," Thorin's mother called from the crowd, "a few of us escaped so I sent a few to retrieve any other survivors"
Thrain's head snapped to look at Fris, and then proceeded to stare at her for a good while before moving to hug her tightly and kiss her.
...
The next two weeks were a blur. Thorin was constantly next to his mother. He hadn't seen her in over a century and a half, after all. Balin and Dwalin spent their own time similarly, with their mother.
They didn't have any time to talk. Well, maybe they did, but their families were more important than talking about things that wouldn't happen for a long time yet.
The scouts who were sent out to retrieve any possible survivors, thanfully haven't returned empty-handed. Two dozen miners and many more who lived in the lower levels, as well as those, whose homes were deeper in the tunels instead of large open spaces.
All in all, the loss was much lesser than the first time.
It made Thorin feel incredibly guilty, and he had to remind himself that exactly this is the reason he's here for a second chance.
Today, he was assigned a job near the healing center, and talked to Oin (after going through hell to find him. Healers don't seem to like random kids running around). Also, Oin seemed in shock that Thorin actually wanted to be friends and that amused the older dwarf to no end.
They talked for a good long while, mostly about such things as their favorite games, and interests, and what their crafts are. It was weird to see that Oin is now, in fact, actually a child, and even more weird to realise that Thorin began to see him as one.
Then, a young dam, maybe Thorin's peer, came to sit next to Oin, who leaned into her after introducing the two, "Thorin, this is my older sister, Opal. Opal, this is my new friend, Thorin"
"Nice to meet you," she said confidently, with an outstretched hand.
Thorin, a bit (a lot) shaken, shook her hand and replied politely.
The conversation was thankfully cut short by someone calling them for dinner.
He had to talk about this with Balin and Dwalin. Did they know Oin had a sister?
She must have been in the mountain just like their mothers...
Woooo, we're getting a female OC!
Seriously, coming up with a name is so hard
Also, this one is quite short, I'm very sorry.
