Bruno looked over to Carina on his other side as Antonio laughed and played with the rats and kittens. It was strange to see the combination but they were happy. Then the animals morphed into each other and bit him.
Opening his eyes Bruno shook off the dream in bed where there was the sunrise shining through. Seeing a picture of his and Carinas wedding day sitting on the side table he turned over and smiled at his sleeping wife. She huddled closer to him and he felt the warmth of her.
The rats bit him again and Bruno was awake in his room behind the walls. Of course they wanted some food, in a world of darkness that molded any day or time one into another. His best way to tell time was his family's dining room and the different meals in there. Still he could never see his Carina, so fittingly named beloved.
After dividing up the crumbs he sat with an Arepa and pulled out the letter from his shirt pocket just over his heart. Reading it for the tenth time he wished he could answer her now he knew she wanted to see him as much as he wanted to see her. But the cracks in the family home would not give him time to slip out now. So the letter went back into his shirt pocket with one of the two pictures he had of her.
