Hey, all sorry it's ben so long. Again, I don't own PJO. But I'm having some fun writing this.
I Go To School, Again
The drive to Ms. Jackson's was quicker than I thought. Soon, we were stopping at the front porch. We grabbed our bags and thanked Argus. We made our way to the door and knocked.
A man opened it up.
"Hello. Is Sally Jackson here?" I asked politely.
"Sally. There are some kids here to see you." He called.
Ms. Jackson came to the door. She was a woman of middle age. She was thin with brown hair. Her eyes were blue like the ocean but seemed to change color the longer I looked.
"Hello Ms. Jackson. I'm Andy Di Angelo. These are my siblings Bianca and Nico. We are the exchange students." I lied, sending a look at the man.
"Of course. Come on in." She smiled.
"Exchange students? I didn't know that you were having exchange students over." The man looked at Ms. Jackson.
"We aren't exactly exchange students. We are from Italy. We got a scholarship to move to America. Ms. Jackson was kind enough to let us stay with her." I corrected him. I had gone over the cover story with my siblings on our way here.
"That's nice. What school are you going to?" He asked.
"We aren't sure. Whatever school is willing to take us." I said.
"Well I'm a teacher at Goode high school. I'm sure we could take you. How old are you?" He offered.
I smiled. "My sister and I are 14. My brother is 11, turning 12 soon." I filled in.
"Well you and your sister could come. There is a middle school around here that I'm sure would take your brother." He gave me a pamphlet to the school. I accepted it gratefully. "Well I'll leave you to get settled in. I hope to see you in school soon." He waved. He said goodbye to Ms. Jackson and left.
"I'm sorry we came while you had company." I apologized.
"No, that's alright." Ms. Jackson brought a plate of blue cookies and offered them to us. I took one and tasted it. It was amazing.
"These are wonderful Ms. Jackson." I said happily.
"None of that Ms. Jackson stuff. You can call me Sally or Aunt Sally." She said. She sat down on the couch and we followed her example. Nico reached for another cookie.
"Okay Aunt Sally. As you know, we are demigods. We are all children of Hades. Father said he'd put up protection so that monsters can't find our scent while we are here." I told her.
She relaxed. "Thank you. Are you the prophecy child then? You said you are 14."
"Yes. I am." I said. "I'm sorry if you wanted your son to be the prophecy child."
"No. I should be thanking you. Ever since Theseus started going to that camp, he's become someone else. I fear that if he was the prophecy child that he would become a whole different person." She said sadly.
"I'm terribly sorry to interrupt, but is there any chance we could put our bags down?" I asked.
"Of course." She stood up and beckoned us towards a room. "After Theseus went on his first quest, he decided that he wanted to stay at camp year round. He gave me a way to get rid of my ex-husband. I got some money and moved into a better apartment. I always had a room ready for when Theseus came back, but he rarely visited." She pushed open the door to the room. "You can stay in it now."
The room wasn't large but it was cozy. There was a bunk bed against one wall. There was another single bed set at the end of it. There was a closet where we could put our clothes. There was also a desk next to the door with pencils and paper on it.
"Thank you. This is perfect." I told her honestly.
"I'm glad." Aunt Sally.
"What are the rules here?" I asked.
She considered it for a moment. "You need to be awake by 7:30. Breakfast is at 8. School starts at 8:30. You need to have decent grades. Nothing below a C without seeing someone for help. If you have anything after school, I need to know beforehand. Dinner is at 6:30. You can't be out past 10." She said, I nodded along.
"Are we doing chores as well?" I considered the room around me. Bianca had already claimed the bottom bunk.
"No. Make sure you keep your room clean though. If you guys can clean up after yourselves then that should be enough." She smiled. "That's it. I'll leave you to settle in. I'll be in the kitchen if you need anything."
"Okay. Thank you Aunt Sally." I said. I turned to the room.
"Andy! Can I have the top bunk!" Nico asked.
"Sure if you want to." I said. I swung my backpack next to the desk and put my duffle on the bed. I pulled out my clothes. I had a few shirts of different colors. Mostly purple or red. I had both short and long sleeves. I had a few pairs of jeans. Half were black.
I hung up my clothes in my part of the closet. I had my camp shirts. I found a way to control what clothes I got from the earring so I got my own camp shirt.
I had decided not to wear the bright orange shirt often. I had a cream shirt, a dark red shirt, and an olive shirt. All with black lettering saying Camp Half-Blood.
I moved to the desk and took out my books. Most were in a different language.
I had only two books in English. One was a fantasy book while the other was poetry.
I had three books in Greek about mythology. Or history for us I guess. There was a monster book telling us about some monsters and how to defeat them.
I had three books in Latin about Roman mythology and a dictionary translating Latin to English. I had learned to read, write, and speak many languages in my time in the Underworld.
The last four books were in Italian. They were stories we read when we were little. There was also a book Mother wrote for us when we were younger. It was about a story where my siblings and I were heroes in the story.
I set them on the bookshelf organized by language and put my notebook and other school supplies on the desk.
I remembered something and walked back into the kitchen. "Aunt Sally? What are your rules with pets?"
She looked up from the stove where she was cooking something. "I'm fine with pets as long as they are house trained and don't ruin anything."
"Okay. Cool. So, I have this pet hellhound. She's a sweetheart and is small. If she stays here is that alright?" I asked.
"A hellhound?" She looked at me oddly.
"Yeah." I fiddled with my charm. "Emmie!" I called her. She tumbled out of the shadows above me and I caught her. "This is Emmaline. I call her Emmie." I introduced.
Aunt Sally came over and reached a hand out to Emmie. My dog sniffed it and accepted her. Aunt Sally hesitantly pets her.
"She is house trained and can shadow travel outside every time she needs to go. She is trained to listen to me." I told her.
"Okay. As long as there isn't a mess to clean up." She said.
I beamed. "Thank you Aunt Sally. I'll make sure she is well behaved." I walk back to our room. I pulled shadows around me and made a plaque on the door. It read:
Andy, Bianca, and Nico Di Angelo.
Do Not Disturb
I turned and walked into the room. Home away from home away from home.
"Bianca! We got accepted!" I opened the door to our room. "They accepted us at Goode high school!"
"Really? We're going to school?" Bianca cheered.
"We are! They said we can start on Monday!" I smiled. It was nice to go back to school after being thrown into the Greek world.
The day after we moved into the apartment, Thanatos had come and taken me to see Father.
Father had put up the protection around the house and set up a schedule for me to come train every day after school. I may have been training for 63 years, but that doesn't mean I couldn't train more. I still needed to learn all about the Romans. And Father still had to teach me to summon many skeletons at once. We also agreed that every once in a while I could help Thanatos with a few missions.
"Andy! Do you think we'll make friends? Will we learn a lot? Do you think they'll help with dyslexia? Will they teach us how to read and write in English?" Bianca asked. She was practically bouncing up and down.
"I hope so. We can ask them on Monday. They said we need to be there at 8 so we can get a tour and get our schedules." I read off the note.
"We need to get our outfits ready. What supplies will we need?" Bianca looked around the room.
"Bianca!" I laughed. "This is just another school."
"No it's not! It's high school! There are so many people. What if I make the wrong impression. Is it dumb not to be able to read in english?" She started to stress.
"It's fine. They said we can take an English class instead of a language since we already speak another language." I looked over the note again. "Everything will be fine."
It was… but then it wasn't.
Classes were great. We had a nice girl named Rachel show us around. It turned out that she was a clear sighted mortal. She didn't say anything but I could tell by her aura.
She invited us to sit with her at lunch.
Everything was going great until English class. Not the class where we learned to read and write English. No. The class that we read about English literature and did free writing.
I would have been okay with it if Bianca wasn't in my grade. But she was so I couldn't show that I knew how to read English.
I raised my hand when he was handing out books.
"Excuse me, sir. Is there any chance that there is a copy in Italian?" I asked.
"No. In this class, you read the book you were given. If you have any problems with that, you can talk to me after class." He droned. So I waited until after class. Everything is fine, right?
Nope. People decided to tease me.
"Look. The little girl is lost. She can't even read the signs around her."
"Go back to your country."
"If you can't be like us, you don't belong here."
I had to deal with that for the rest of the class. Afterwards, I went to the teachers desk.
"Sir. I'm terribly sorry, but my sister and I can't read English yet. We are taking classes to be able to. But we aren't advanced enough to read entire books. Is there a way to get a copy in Italian?" I asked kindly.
"No. If you aren't able to keep up with this class, then you shouldn't be in it." He then turned and pointed to the door.
The rest of the day went rather smoothly.
After school, I walked Bianca home and told Sally I was going to the library. I walked into an ally and jumped in the shadows.
I came out in Mom's garden where she was working.
"Hey mom. How's it going?" I walked over to her.
"Hello Andy. It's pretty good. Winter will be over before long and I will get to keep an eye on you." She joked.
I smiled. "I'm just going to get in some training. Father said he'd tell me more about the Romans." I waved to her and walked into the palace.
The class wasn't too long. Father thought we should ease back into training. I wasn't so sure. He let me go at 5:30 so I still had an hour before I needed to be back home.
I ended up petting Cerberus for a little bit and playing fetch.
I took a flight over the fields of asphodel. I saw Hazel still in the same spot. I swooped down and pulled in my wings.
"Hey. You're still in the same place." I pointed out.
"I know. There's not much reason to move around." Hazel turned to look at me. "Andromeda, right?"
I nodded and sat on the ground across from her. "Yeah. So how are you doing?"
"You know, still dead." She smiled. "Did you ever figure out why you were down here?"
"Oh. Yeah. Turns out, you are my sister, I'm a daughter of Pluto as well." I said. "Surprise!"
She blinked. "Okay then. Why are you down here?"
"Oh. Yeah. I was doing a quest. Father sent me to do something for him. Anyway, how long have you been down here?" I asked. I waved a hand at the whole field.
"I'm not sure. I died in 1942." She told me.
"So about 66 years." I mused. "Nice. When were you born?"
"December 17th 1928." Hazel said.
"That's cool. We're about the same age! Give or take 66 years." I smiled.
She laughed. "So what are you doing down here again?"
"Well I actually came to visit you. I had some time before I needed to get home for dinner so I thought I could come talk to you. I'm actually thinking that I could talk to my father to see if you could come back to the world above." I partially lied.
"That is really nice." She gave a soft smile.
"Yeah. Father was busy right now. I'll try to talk to him soon. It might not be as soon as I'd hope though. There's a battle going to take place in the next few years. Something about Saturn trying to rise and many titans rising with him." I told her.
"Oh! Please don't make me a priority if people need you." She shook her head.
An alarm went off on my watch. "Oh. I'm terribly sorry. I need to get home in the next five minutes or I'll be late for dinner. I'll try to talk to Father soon. I'm not allowed to visit too often. But I'll do my best. I hope to talk to you soon." I stood up and melted into the shadows. I popped back out from the shadows, scaring an alley cat.
I got back to the house in time to wash my hands and sit down for dinner.
The rest of the week went by in that fashion. I wasn't able to talk to Hazel but I learned a lot more about the Romans.
Father became Pluto while we were talking about the camp. Pluto gave me his blessing, giving me the ability to control metals, precious jewels, and rocks. We spent almost a month learning those skills.
He showed me a map of the Roman camp and taught me the customs. I made Father promise to let Hazel come to the living world after the war was over.
School went along fine. I learned most of it in the Underworld. We had spent the first 5 years I was down here learning all that I needed to know. Every decade I'd go through new material.
I was able to keep my grades in the B's and A's. Bianca and Nico were able to learn English well. I made sure to spend time with them. We didn't grow apart.
Soon, the summer was getting close. I was ready to go back to camp and train some more.
Okay. I know it sounds like training is all I do. But go be fair, I need to be able to defeat Kronos. He is like a bajillion years older than me.
Also, training can mean learning about monsters as well. I kept up my reading. I memorized as many monsters as I could. I was writing my own book about monsters.
The one I had only had the main ones that are in the myths with heroes.
I was talking to the people in Elysian and getting their stories on how they met these monsters and strengths and weaknesses. I also wrote the best ways to kill them.
Father let this be a part of my training so I got to write down whatever they said for about an hour each day.
By the time it was summer, I was able to complete the rough copy. It didn't have every monster but it had many of them. I had printed out a few copies and gave them to Bianca, Nico, Aunt Sally, and I kept one on my bookshelf. I made half of them in Greek so it was easier for demigods to read.
It turns out that Aunt Sally is a writer! She let us read through some of her first drafts. They were really interesting.
She was curious about the book that our Mother wrote so we read it out loud, translating it to English.
Aunt Sally liked it and asked for our permission to turn it into a book. We hesitated but agreed. She said that she would change the character names a bit so that it wasn't us. She also put us in the acknowledgments.
All in all, the year was pretty good.
Hey, How are you all doing? Sorry for such a long wait. Feel free to leave a review. See you all next time.
