Chapter 73- The Chain Warden

Runeterra, Shadow Isles

"These Isles look creepy." Sara commented.

Lucian, Senna and Sara sat in a boat as the three sailed towards the Shadow Isles.

"Damn right." Lucian agreed.

"Here." Senna said, handing Sara a strange looking gun made of white stone, with a handle.

"What the hell is this?" Sara frowned.

"A relic-stone pistol. It's the only weapon that can kill the Wraiths of the Shadow Isles." Senna explained.

Sara gingerly took the pistol and analyzed it. She noticed something strange.

"There's no trigger. How am I supposed to use this?" She asked.

"You channel your soul into light and that powers it." Senna explained.

"I have no idea how that even works, but okay." Sara groaned, running her hand over her face.

"You get used to it." Lucian shrugged.

There was a crack of thunder and Sara looked ahead, seeing the Black Mist floating off the Shadow Isles, some heading off into the distance.

"Where's it going?" Sara asked.

"To Bilgewater," Senna explained. "That place is always being attacked by Harrowings, by the undying Wraiths of the Isles."

"Damn, poor guys." Sara muttered in sympathy.

"No shit." Senna agreed.

"We're closing in," Lucian said grimly. "If the Mist touches you, you'll be turned into a mindless Wraith, just like all the others."

"Wonderful." Sara sighed, looking over her relic-stone pistol. The boat sailed further towards the dark island.

"And we're in the shit now." Sara said as Senna and Lucian readied their pistols.

"Be on alert, Wraiths will come at us." Lucian warned.

"Got it." Sara nodded.

The three walked down a bridge in the middle of the Isles. Sara could hear dark whispers in her ears and saw green shapes out of the corner of her eyes.

"This place is creepy. Like a horror movie." Sara muttered to herself.

"No shit." Senna agreed, though she was confused by the horror movie part.

Lucian looked around, his pistol at the ready.

"What are we searching for?" Sara asked, tying her dirty blonde hair into a ponytail.

"A relic that can help Senna." Lucian replied.

"And we're heading to?" Sara pressed.

"The underground relic vaults." Senna said this time.

Nodding, Sara looked around. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone or something was watching them from the shadows.

"I don't like where this is going." She muttered.

Sara lit a torch as the orange flames lit the dark hallway.

"Let's start searching." Lucian said, as the three began searching the dark hallway.

Sara looked around. The architecture in this place was definitely ancient, older than any place she had been to on Runeterra so far, except Ionia, Shurima and Draton Dynasty.

"This must have been one hell of a place." She commented.

"From what I know, it was." Senna agreed.

Giant cobwebs lined the pillars. Sara did a double take, swearing she saw a giant red spider appear and then disappear.

The three found themselves at the end of the hallway, where a crown stood on a pedestal.

"Why is there just a random ass crown in the middle of nowhere?" Sara asked.

"Something unearthed long ago." A sinister, echoey voice said from nowhere.

All three spun around to see a tall being march towards them. Sara faltered when she saw what it was.

It was a huge Wraith, with a sinister skull wreathed in green flames. It carried a green glowing lantern in its right hand, attached to a chain. It wore a huge coat and cackled madly.

"What the hell are you?" Senna growled.

The creature smirked. "I am Thresh. Custodian of these vaults. Call me…the Chain Warden. And your souls will make for a delicious snack."

"I don't think so!" Lucian roared, firing his pistol. Thresh effortlessly deflected all the shots with his lantern.

Sara leveled her pistol and closed her eyes. A beam of light shot out of it and sailed towards Thresh.

Turning, he deflected it and sneered at Sara. He was easily the most terrifying being she had encountered, though not as bad as Thanos.

Senna fired her pistol but Thresh kept blocking.

"Lucian, run!" Senna cried out as Sara kept firing at him to keep him distracted.

As she tried to run past, Thresh lashed out a kick that sent her crashing to the ground, knocking the air out of her lungs.

Sara spat out blood as she tried to stagger up. Lucian was knocked down as Thresh let out a sinister laugh.

"Your souls shall be mine." He laughed.

Roaring in blind anger, Lucian got up and charged at Thresh. Anticipating the move, the Chain Warden threw his lantern.

"LUCIAN!" Senna screamed, shoving Lucian out the way right as the lantern came at her.

BANG!

Sara could only stare in horror as Senna screamed in agony as her soul was forcefully torn from her body.

A bright white light erupted from Senna's body as her soul appeared.

"Lucian!" the soul of Senna cried out briefly, before a green light erupted and she was pulled into Thresh's lantern where she disappeared.

Senna's dead body dropped to the ground.

"SENNA!" Lucian roared, getting up.

"Her soul shall suffer, Sentinel." Thresh chuckled darkly.

"You'll pay, you monster!" Lucian tried to charge, but Sara grabbed him from behind.

"Lucian, no! Don't!" she shouted, forcefully dragging Lucian away, while swallowing her own tears and grief.

"Yes, run mortals. I will find you." Thresh taunted.

Sara dragged Lucian away while he screamed curses at the undead abomination, vowing to make him pay.

Sara and Lucian made their way to the boat. Once they arrived, Lucian dropped to his knees, weeping freely.

"Lucian, we have to go." Sara said through her own crying.

"Why did you stop me?!" Lucian snarled in anger.

"Excuse me?" Sara asked, offended. "I just saved your life. He would have killed us both."

"Senna is gone!" Lucian said, crying again.

Sara's heart went out to the man as she wiped her own tears.

"I know, Luci, but…I believe that…the heart does go on." She said.

Leaning forward, she embraced Lucian the way a sister does to a brother, letting him cry into her shoulder as she wept for the loss of her friend.

"Listen, Lucian, I know it's hard, but…we can get through this. Senna is gone. We just have to move on and grow." Sara said gently.

"Some do…but not us." Lucian said.

"I know. We'll have to sing like never before." Sara said, wiping her tears again.

She pulled away from Lucian and they touched foreheads.

"What will you do?" she asked.

"I don't know." Lucian admitted.

Sara nodded. "If you need me…just call. And every breath we draw is Hallelujah."

She closed her eyes in remembrance.

"Thanks Sara, but I'll be fine on my own." Lucian said gruffly.

Sara silently nodded. And for the first time in a long time, she bowed her head to pray.

"Bard, I'm sorry for the way I've been living my life. I know I've got to change. So please, help. Because I can't do this on my own. I'm letting go, so give me one last chance. Save me and Lucian from the path we're walking on." She prayed.

Later, Sara watched the silent Lucian as he walked away, his shoulders slumped, defeated.

"I'll see you one other day now, friend. I'm holding on to this wasted love, so I'll remember the way we were." Sara whispered.

It was time to go back to Demacia.

And done.

So a new champion has appeared and its Thresh aka The Chain Warden, and he's also the first champion from the Shadow Isles to appear in this story.

RIP Senna. She deserved better. Pretty much every champion does.

I feel Lucian would shut everyone, including Sara off after Senna's death, but he will come around eventually.

So now Sara is off to Demacia, where the rest of the Demacian champions will show up and the plot will advance further.

Hope everyone enjoyed and see you all with another chapter.
