Disclaimers – I do not own any of these characters, and this is yaoi so if you don't like BL, then don't read. Also, this story does not follow the plot of the anime or manga, very AU and OOC

Important Info: Zero is 100% human (still a hunter) which means Kaname did give him his blood for Yuki's sake and he doesn't have the tattoo on his neck, everyone knows Yuki is a pureblood and Kaname's sister, she lives with the night class, the Kuran family was destroyed (Kaname and Yuki being the only survivors), and the Kiryu family is alive and thus Zero doesn't hate vampires although he still has a general dislike for them

Chapter 5

Rido waited in the burned ruins that used to be the Kuran family estate. The sun is setting. He did not leave any sort of message or note when he attacked Yuki, no, he found that far too cliche. But if Kaname could not figure out that he was in such an obvious place, then he clearly underestimated his nephew's intelligence. Speaking of which…

He could sense Kaname approaching what's left of the entrance, alone. Good. He had waited for years for the right time and planned for weeks. Now he was finally going to complete his goal. As soon as Kaname entered his line of sight, he watched as his nephew was swarmed with Level E's. They were all under Rido's control, of course. He knew a pureblood wouldn't be taken down so easily, but he had no problem throwing away some useless human lives to distract him.

Kaname's aura expanded, frightening some of the Level E's and completely destroying others. Rido's sense honed in on his opponent. He was not stupid or arrogant enough to think he could easily win against Kaname. He may not have actively trained his skills over the past years, too content with the peace he found at Cross Academy, but he is still a member of the Kuran family. This would be a brutal, messy fight to the death.

And then Rido hears the familiar sound of a gun, and only his heightened reflexes allow him to move a few inches to the side before the impact. There is a burning sensation in his shoulder as an anti-vampire bullet rips through the back of his shoulder. When the hell did Zero Kiryu show up? He was so focused on Kaname, who was the biggest (no, the only) threat to him, that he did not sense another presence enter the building. Wasn't this worthless human supposed to be dead? Or, at the very least, completely incapacitated due to his spell?

And then everything fell to chaos. He released any control or direction he had over the Level E's. The hungry vampires scattered. Some left to seek the nearest town. Others attacked at random. Zero moves to take care of the Level E's aiming for Kaname's back.

"Damn you!" Rido curses, losing his cool, no longer thinking drastically anymore. Forget the plan, forget what comes after. Right now, he has one focus: killing his target.

One of those dumb vampires dared to attack him? Rido is distracted for just a second and Kaname is suddenly behind him. He turns to counter the blow, but Kaname already has his claws buried in his stomach. Another bullet in his right leg.

Rido's claws slice into Kaname's cheek, his nephew stepping back just in time to save his eye from the attack. Rido's vision goes red, and then he sees it. A scythe in Kaname's hands, the one he used that day… Most of the Level E's are gone, Rido feels Zero towards him, and he knows this battle is already over.

- Meanwhile -

Yagari begrudgingly stands with Ruka and Rima. He feels them stare with a mix of astonishment and a little bit of fear, having just watched him single-handedly, mercilessly execute serval vampires. They stand between the Kuran family house and a nearby human town. Kaito, Kaien, and the rest of the night class are all positioned around the estate, ready for any Level E's that Rido would surely have.

He turns his back to the Kuran house and starts moving. "Wait, we are supposed to-" one of the girls starts.

"If there were anymore they would have come already. We are also here to see if Rido has any other allies nearby. Well, one's that still have their sanity intact anyway." Yagari grumbles and heads toward the faint vampiric aura that he senses in town.

Kaien waits impatiently next to Yuki's bed in the infirmary. He looks up to see Kaname standing next to him, sprouting several new damages and a nasty scratch on his cheek. "Rido is gone, right? Then why isn't she waking up?"

"Yes, he is," Kaname confirms. "But the spell was meant to keep the victim in a coma for the rest of their life. Now that it has been dispelled, it will take some time for Yuki to recover, pureblood or not. Give it a day or so and she will be fine. You should get some rest."

Kaien is stubborn, but feels relief rush through him, knowing that Rido has been taken care of. He is tired, it's been a long night. And he can see the exhaustion on Kaname's face too. "Okay."

Kaname walks into his room, slumping against the door. "You should take your own advice." It's still dark outside and clouds block the moon. But he doesn't need to see to know that Zero is waiting for him on his bed. He smiles, "Eavesdropping on me?"

Zero smiles too as Kaname pulls him closer, their chests touching. "I worry about him." He knows Zero is talking about Kaien. "He is annoying and is hardly ever serious when I want him to be. But he cares."

"So eavesdropping on the chairmen, then?" Kaname corrects with a teasing tone. They laugh and Zero falls back onto the back, Kaname on top of him.

"Get some sleep." Kaname kicks off his shoes and removes his jacket, but otherwise doesn't bother changing. They shuffle for a few moments, settling on their sides facing each other. They are content. It would seem strange to everyone else who has only ever seen them argue and grumble at one another.

"Goodnight."

Shoes lightly tap against the floor. The door squeaks lightly as it is closed.

Yuki smiles and takes a deep breath as Kaien finally leaves the room. So Rido is dead. And it seems that Kaname truly believes that his spell is what put her in a coma. She smirks. Perfect.

There is a reason that they could not sense Rido's aura. It was because he did not use a spell at all. She did. Which also explains the small traces of her aura found on Zero. They actually thought she had tried to protect him? Ironic, she had prepared to make a similar explanation, but they made the excuse for her.

And she had woken as soon as her connection with Rido had fallen silent. He failed to eliminate Kaname and Zero. Oh well. She lost a valuable pawn in the process, but at least all suspicion had been diverted from her. "Don't worry, brother. Just wait a little longer, I'll save you."

Notes: And that's the end! Plz let me know if you enjoyed.

Hello. It has been over 6 years since I originally wrote this story. Wow, I can't believe it. I have returned to finish what I started. I have redone this fic. If you have read this story before then you will see some major changes. I plan to add a whole bunch of stuff including more background and character development, so the first chapter may seem like a completely different story to you guys. But the main elements of the story will be preserved- strange dreams/nightmares, Rido as the antagonist, Zero's immunity to a pureblood's venom, etc...
