Chapter 10
Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia Germany
Early May 1963
We where doing training exercises in the afternoon. It was three section and five section against one and four section of B Company. With two section in reserves for the afternoon exercise.
"Carrington" I was called over by Sargent McClyde who stood near the Land Drover where Captain Markham and Major Smyth sat dry and warm while the rest of us where freezing our bollocking off in the pissing rain.
"Sir" I saluted standing to attention next to the Land Drover where jammy bastards sat dry and warm.
"Carrington your being excused from the afternoon's exercise."
"Sir may I ask why" I asked.
"Your Aunt phoned the guardhouse twenty minutes ago. It seems your wife is in labour they've taken her to the hospital. Take it from me it's better to be there when your first born comes into the world.
They don't stay baby's long. He or she will be grown up in the blink of eye. You'll wonder where the time went. Go off with you" Major Smyth mused.
"Thank you Sir" I thanked him before headed back to Barracks.
After handing over my SLR at the armoury I hightailed to where my motorcycle was parked.
I made it in record time to the hospital, I parked haphazardly. I placed my helmet and googles on the handlebars.
"Can I help you Sir" The nurse behind the front desk asked.
"My Wife Stephanie Carrington was brought in labour" I answered.
"She is room 103 on the third floor" The nurse pointed in the direction
"Thank you" I thanked her before heading for the stairs.
I made up the three flights of stairs without breaking a sweat. I jogged down the hallway till I found room 103
I entered the room. Steph, my Aunt Dorothea and nurse where in the room.
"Sir may I help you" The nurse asked notching I entered the room.
"Yes you can as I'm the father to be" I answered sitting beside Stephaine's beside.
9 hours later.
After nine and half hours getting close to ten hours. Baby Carrington had yet to make an appearance. The nurses and doctors came and went from the room while we waited. The baby wasn't quite ready to come into the world just yet.
I made a silent pray to the man upstairs that everything went smoothly. That nothing went wrong.
A nurse came to check to see how much long it would be before the baby would be born. Something must have been wrong she quickly called for the doctor.
"Mr Carrington I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
"What for" I wasn't going anywhere.
"A husbands place isn't in here while baby is being born."
"The hell it isn't Doc. I'm not going anywhere" I stood my ground.
"Doctor wouldn't it be best if Michael stayed. My husband was present when all our children where born. It would help seeing as this is their first child" Aunt Dorothea cut in before the doctor could argue otherwise.
"Very well" The Doctor didn't argue any further on that point. I stayed where I was sat beside Steph's bedside my hand in hers.
Steph cursed me out repeatedly in both English and Italian. It was my fault and I was never touching her ever again. I knew that was the labour pain talking. My hand was throbbing by the such strong grip she had on it.
"One last push Mrs Carrington. The baby's nearly here" I winched as how hard Steph's squeezed my hand.
Our child's first cry came only a few heartbeats later.
"It's a boy" The doctor declared as he cut the imbecilic cord. We had a son
The nurses and doctors took him away to clean him up. Before weighting and measuring him.
"Weight 9 pounds and 3 ounces. Length 20.5 inches, head circumference is 13.5 inches. He's perfectly healthy baby boy" One of the nurses handed me him wrapped up in a blue blanket
He took mostly after me apart from the full head of blonde hair on his head and the nose. Which he got from Steph. He looked up at me with those beautiful blue eyes of his. They held an innocence I prayed he never lost.
"Hello little one welcome to world" I say kissing the top of his head.
I moved back over to the bed handing him over to Steph. I sat beside her on the bed. I felt a strong sense of love and protectiveness come over me as I held them both close to me.
"Now what we going to call you" I wondered
"Matthew after you dad if you don't mind"
"Matthew it's a good strong name. We'll have to think of a middle name for you as well" Baby Matthew took hold of my hand.
"Matthew Michael William Carrington"
"Not bad but what about Matthew Jacob Michael William Carrington" I offered.
"Why would you"
"Name him after you dad. I know your dad hates me for whatever reason. But he's still your dad and Matthew's grandfather. We named him after my dad I figured he should have both of his grandfather's names."I explained.
"What about Matthew William Giacobbe Michael Carrington then"
"Matthews seemed to agree. So it's decided then his name is Matthew William Giacobbe Michael Carrington" We agreed on a full name for Matthew.

Early May 1963
The Dawson and Carrington families had been spending a lot more time together since Michael and Stephanie had left for Germany. Most days Betty would come over to check on Adeline and William on every day.
Betty and Adeline where chatting in the kitchen over a cup of tea. William was listen to the horse racing over the wireless in the living room.
There was a loud knock on the front door.
"That can't be the landlord the rent's been paid."Adeline commented getting to her feet.
"I'll get it if you want" Betty offered
"Thank you Betty. My old pins aren't what they used to be"
"Telegram for Mr and Mrs William Carrington" The boy with a telegram explained.
Betty took the telegram after tipping the boy. "What is it Betty" William asked from the living room.
"Telegram for you and Adeline" Betty answered.
"Who is it from" Adeline wondered coming into the living room.
"It's from Michael."Betty explained before reading the telegram which read.
‛NAN, POP STOP. I HAVE SOME WONDERFUL NEWS STOP. YOUR GREAT GRANDSON MATTHEW WILLIAM GIACOBBE MICHAEL CARRINGTON WAS BORN THREE DAYS AGO ON THE 3RD OF MAY STOP. HE WAS A HEALTHY WEIGHT OF 9 POUNDS AND 3 OUNCES, LENGTH IS 20.5 INCHES LONG AND A HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE OF 13.5 INCHES STOP. BOTH STEPH AND MATTHEW ARE DOING FINE STOP. "Michael and Stephanie have had their baby. A boy it seems" Betty explained as she finished reading the telegram.
"Well I guess our hunch of the baby being a boy was right" William was tickled pink about his great grandson being named in his honour. He was touched that Michael and Stephanie had named the little one after Matthew.
William knew his son would have been tickled pink for his first grandchild and son to be named after him. William could wait to meet his great grandson Matthew when the time came for he and Adeline to meet little Matthew.
Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia Germany
Mid May 1963
Steph and Matthew stayed in hospital for a week after Matthew was born. Long night of very little sleep followed in the day followed. Matthew was worth every bit of those sleepless nights.
I got up in the early hours of the morning to tend his beck and call to give Steph a break. Uncle Robert and the rest of the family where here leading a hand with Matthew.
"What up little man what are you doing awake" I asked leaning over the side of the cot. Matthew only cried in response.
"Well you can't be hunger you where feed last time" By the smell of it Matthew was in need of changing.
After changing him. Matthew it seemed didn't want or wasn't tired to go back to sleep. I tried to tell him a few stories. That didn't help him drift off to sleep. For some reason. I recalled a song my mum sang to me and my siblings when we where babies. Danny Boy.
I sat down in the rocking chair. I began to sing Danny Boy quietly. It worked as Matthew went back to sleep. I got up and placed him back in his cot.
"Sleep well little man" I stood watching as Matthew slept in his cot.
Watching Matthew sleep. I could not comprehend how or why Mr Zinone had wanted Steph to give Matthew up. As a father I could not understand his reason for what he had done. It was in the past.
Despite how my father in law and I felt about one another. Both he and Matthew deserved to know one another. Matthew should at least have one grandparent as my own parents where dead.
Leaving Matthew to sleep I went in search of a bit of paper and pen to write a letter.
Jake's Garage Rydell California
Mid May 1963
Giacobbe ‛Jake' Zinone was going over the month accounts for the service station. A photo on his desk caught his attention. His little girl Stephanie, he and Molly. Taken just a month before Molly was killed.
"Jake there's a letter from Germany here for you" His long time friend and head mechanic Paul called as he came into the office.
"Germany" Jake frowned.
"Yeah Wuppertal or something like that. Says it's from a Mr Michael W Carrington or something like that. That anit that kid who knocked Steph up was it. He was hanging around here last summer"
"Yes that is Michael" Jake took the letter.
"Steph would be due to have the baby soon or has had it if the baby came to term. Have you heard from her since they went to England" Paul careful asked
"No I know from Harold Rebchuck that he and Steph are married. He's in the Army now or so Harold said last time we talked" Paul nodded leaving Jake alone to read the letter from his son in law.
Dear Mr Zinone.
I guess you will be surprised to hear from me after all these months. Not half as surprised that I wrote it. Stephanie and I got married back in September. I make a decent living as a Private in the British Army.
We're living in Wuppertal West Germany at the moment as my Regiment is based there. I am writing to tell you that you have a beautiful grandson who was born on the 3rd of this month.
His name is Matthew William Giacobbe Michael Carrington. He was named for my late father sake, my grandfather, yourself and me. No matter how we feel about one another. I though I should take the higher road and write to you. Tell you about Matthew
Both Stephanie and Baby Matthew are doing well. He takes mostly after me apart from his blonde hair and nose he inherited from Stephanie.
Speaking of Stephanie she doesn't know that I have written to you. No matter how much she say she doesn't miss you. I can see it more so now that Matthew has been born. Your dislike and disapproval of me I can put down that in your eyes I and any other man would never be good enough for Stephanie.
When Steph and I have daughters I would no doubt feel the same way. If you wish to write back, call or come visit I have enclosed the address and phone number on the back of the envelope.
Warm Regards your son in law Michael Carrington
Jake folded the letter with tears in his eyes. In the months after Stephanie had left well he'd kicked her out. That had been one of Jake's biggest regrets Kicking Stephanie out. He'd been blinded by anger and disappointment. That had soon past but it was too late. Michael and Stephanie had gone to England.
He and Stephanie had been close ever since Molly had died, even before then What he had said in the heat of the moment had shattered that close father daughter relationship they had. Which they may never get back.
Jake didn't want to look back in thirty forty years regretting not repairing his relationship with Stephanie and never knowing his grandchildren as a result. Perhaps a trip to Germany was in order.
