Chapter Six: Fish Out of Water
Sally knew from the moment that Sonic had asked her out that something was up. He kept on saying 'um'; he sounded as if he was talking to her over the phone and looking over his shoulder every ten seconds. Then later when they went out, he kept on staring out the window, and most of the time he had to ask her to repeat everything she said. Was he distracted? By what? And why?
Sonic was feeling rather out of place. And he wasn't quite sure why, even though he was convinced that Sally was the girl he liked. Somehow he just didn't feel like talking. Why? Sonic asked himself over and over. Which distracted him even more from Sally.
"Are...you okay?" Sally finally asked.
"Um, what?" asked Sonic.
"Y-you just keep zoning out," Sally pointed out. "Is something wrong?" Her question was returned with a shrug. Sally muttered something and rested her head on her fist. She needed some answers out of this guy. Fast. From now on, it was no more Miss Nice Gal. Sally needed to take action.
She banged her fist on the table. "What is your problem, Sonic?! It's like you're half-asleep or something! Snap out of it! Now," said Sally, calmly brushing a lock of hair out of her face,"would you please," she folded her hands together on the table,"would you please take the time to explain for this extremely strange behavior?"
Sonic seemed a bit taken aback. Enough to make him explain for that extremely strange behavior. Because talking back to Sally when her mind was made up was like trying to knock down a building with both hands tied behind your back. It was impossible. So there was no other choice but to explain.
"Well," Sonic said, trying to find words, "Amy moved away. So, uh, I'm, like, feeling...just kinda...you know..."
"Okay, whatever, I guess that explains it." Sally rolled her eyes. But inside she was doubting that this was the whole reason. What if, say, Sonic liked Amy? Fine with her. But, why would he ask her out if she wasn't who she liked? To take his mind off Amy? Suddenly Sally felt like she was being used. She had one more question to ask. "Sonic-" she started, only to notice that Sonic was gone. Sally's anger flared. Her suspicions were definitely right.
"Hey Sonic!" Sally rushed to catch up to him the next morning. "I just want to say a word of thanks...so, THANKS FOR DITCHING ME YESTERDAY!" Sally briskly started walking the other way.
"Wait, Sal!" Sonic ran ahead of her so he was walking backwards in front of her. "About yesterday. I just wasn't feeling myself, y'know? And, like, these things happen, right?" Sally moved to the left. So did Sonic. "So, I'm real sorry and stuff about it, and-oof!" Sonic had walked backwards into a tree, fallen leaves surrounding him. Sally had deliberately turned left to make him crash. That was the last straw. Sonic the Hedgehog wouldn't be talking to any girls for a while.
Sally could feel guilt for making Sonic crash. He'll be fine, she thought. ...All right, who am I kidding? For all I know, he broke his back or worse. "Sonic!" Sally ran back down the path to where the tree stood. Leaves studded the soft grass as proof of Sonic's presence. However, Sonic himself...was gone. Again. Twice. That was the last straw. Sally Acorn wouldn't be talking to any boys for a while. Especially not Sonic, Disappearist Extraordinaire.
(A/N: Back in Ye Olden Sonamy Days, it was super popular to make Sally Acorn the terrible mean girl that Sonic was dating before he would fall head over heels for Amy à la every high school movie ever. I'm not so into that haha.)
