Holly tuned out Dorian's complaining and Sera telling the story of how she accidentally snuck into an Orlesian brothel. Instead, she turned her attention to the sky and glanced to Graham from time to time as he and Solas led the Inquisition over the mountain. It turned out that she was paying too much attention to the sky and not enough to where she was walking when she walked right into Cassandra.
"Oh, sorry," Holly said.
"Are you alright?" Cassandra asked, holding her arms out to help steady Holly.
"I'm fine, just too focused on other things," she looked over Cassandra's shoulder, at Graham who had stopped walking. He was staring over the edge of the mountain as Solas spoke to him with a smile.
"Why did we stop walking?" Holly asked.
Cassandra turned back towards Graham, "I'm not sure."
Graham, having great timing as ever, turned back to the rest of them with a wide smile, "You have to see this!"
They all looked at each other, shrugged, and walked to where Graham and Solas stood. Holly being shorter than everyone, but Varric and Sera, had to fight her way to the front of the small group. The gasps and expressions of wonder didn't quite prepare her for what sat in the distance. Once she was in front of everyone else, her eyes almost popped out of her head.
A massive fortress sat between the mountains. She could see a few holes in the roofs from where they stood, but they hardly took away from the impressive structure. They hadn't even stepped into the grounds, and Holly knew Solas was right. It was the exact place the Inquisition should have been in in the first place.
"Is that…?" Cassandra started to ask.
"Skyhold? Yes, it is," Solas answered.
Skyhold was rich with magic. Holly could feel it even before she walked through the gates. Solas said that's how he knew it was there. She wasn't quite sure if she believed him or not, but she did want to dive right into the ruins, and see what was hidden, but she had to resist the urge. Getting everyone else settled for the time being was more important.
She and Cullen directed a few people to poke around inside the keep on the off chance there were critters nesting there, or worse, demons. While the keep was searched they helped Leliana and Josephine get temporary tents set up. The scouts returned shortly, and gave the all clear. Holly had to hold back a snort as she watched Dorian all but sprint into the keep. Solas disappeared into the building soon after him. She spotted Cassandra and Graham arguing near the base of one of the towers that created the entrance gate. She got there just in time to hear Graham huff, "Fine."
"What was that about?" Holly asked, "Did you tell him about our decision yet?"
"No. I told him to take a nap."
"Ah."
Holly wanted to be mad at Cassandra for not talking to him about it, but she hadn't either. Cassandra was right to tell Graham to take a nap. He was starting to look like Cullen, who Holly was becoming more and more concerned about.
Holly briefly grabbed Cassandra's arm, "How're you holding up by the way? I haven't had a chance to check in with you."
Cassandra smiled slightly, "I'd like to say that I've been through worse, but I don't think any of us have. I'm fine. Better than most of us here."
"I don't doubt that. Any of that."
"Lady Cassandra!" a scout called, "Commander Cullen needs you!"
"You should check on the others. It's not exactly my strong suit," Cassandra said.
"I was planning on it anyway," Holly said as Cassandra walked away.
Holly surveyed the courtyard. Most of the work to be done outside was heavy lifting at that point, so she could offer no help. She didn't see anyone, but Cassandra and Cullen who were obviously busy, so she headed up the stairs and into the keep.
Her eyes widened as she walked into the great hall. It was a mess; there were boards from the ceiling on the floor, crumbling walls, chandeliers lying around, but she could see the potential. It helped that the massive windows at the end of the all were still intact, and shining a kind of spotlight on the throne that sat there. A throne that would soon belong to her brother. She shoved that thought right out of her head.
Both of the doors on the left side of the hall were blocked, so she turned towards the first door on her right. She could hear the sounds of Dorian and Solas' voices coming from the room just beyond the door, as she approached it. The room was completely empty save for a table, some scaffolding, and the two men. It had no ceiling. Instead, it opened up to the floors above it. She wondered what the room was originally for.
"So, what do you think he is?" Dorian asked.
"Who?" Holly asked.
"That boy that arrived just before the templars," Dorian answered, "I don't think he's a mage."
"Because he isn't," Solas said, "I'm not sure what he is exactly, but I'm fairly certain 'spirit' is a better way to describe him. I don't know of any mages who have had his set of abilities."
"Spirit?" Holly raised an eyebrow, "Are you sure?"
"That he's not human or a demon, yes. He seems to only want to help, and if he was a demon, I think he would've taken advantage of our situation already."
"I'm guessing you're willing to vouch for him?" Holly asked.
"I am."
"I'll keep that in mind then. I trust you, we wouldn't be here without you, but I suspect we'll get some push back from Cassandra and Cullen."
"Speaking of people being in charge, are we going to continue to go Inquisitorless?" Dorian asked, seemingly satisfied with the conversation about Cole.
"Not for much longer. I don't know exactly when, but it should be no longer than a few days."
"Good, we can stop running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. Now, if you don't mind me, I'll be upstairs," Dorian said, and turned on his heel to head up the stairs.
Holly turned to Solas, "By the way, how're you holding up?"
He pulled back slightly, "I'm fine. Why do you ask?"
"I'm just checking in on everyone. We all just went through something pretty terrifying. That's all."
"I apologize. I… have lived alone for a very long time."
"I get it. It took me a while to get used to no longer living in the Circle. Change can be hard."
"That is all too true."
They were silent for a moment, before she asked, "Do you know what this room was for?"
"It's had many different uses, so I can't quite say. I, however, intend to use it to properly depict what has and will happen to the Inquisition. Good and bad."
A small smile spread across her face, "Well, let me be the first to say, I appreciate it. I can already see the weight of the rumors of what had happened when the Breach first appeared. After all, they say, 'The Truth will set you free.'"
"I'm glad you approve. I wish more people understood that."
"I wish more people understood things in general. We could've avoided this whole situation entirely."
Solas opened his mouth to say something, but he was interrupted by the sound of sprinting footsteps coming from the great hall. A very flustered looking scout ran in.
"Lady Holly," he panted, "Commander Cullen, Sister Leliana, and the others are looking for you."
"Ah, thank you for letting me know," Holly said, dismissing the scout. She turned back to Solas before following the scout out, "Duty calls."
