Summary/disclaimer: Time for another chapter of Chilling Champion. Enjoy the 2000-word chapter. I don't own Pokémon, Nintendo, and a few others.
Mabrey watched as he looked at the Pokémon in front of him who seemed to withstand anything thrown at her. Mabrey was WELL aware of how Cynthia's Garchomp had seldom lost a battle.
Then again? His Mismagius was powerful as well. He loved said Pokémon who was as much family as his flesh and blood relatives.
"Mismagius seems to be enjoying herself to a rather large degree," Cynthia said to which Mabrey shrugged.
"She doesn't get to cut loose this often if I'm honest," Mabrey said while smiling at his Pokémon. "She doesn't have many enemies who can push her to her limits. She's a darling out of fights." Mabrey said as he crossed his arms.
Garchomp looked at the Pokémon whom she was battling. She looked to her master and owner who seemed to be deciding the next move.
"Garchomp, use dragon rush," Cynthia ordered as said Pokémon charged forward. "Hmm," Cynthia added as she started to think.
"Maggy? Thunderbolt!" Mabrey responded while said Pokémon nodded.
There was a flash as a massive surge of electricity was thrown at the dragon Pokémon. The Pokémon was thrown backward slightly while it charged forwards. Said Pokémon slowed down while shaking off the damage.
"I've heard that Pokémon is one of the strongest in the region," Mabrey stated while he put a hand to his temples. "Pretty impressive for a Pokémon who isn't at the top of the food chain regularly," Mabrey added while he shook his head.
"Well? That's what training does." Cynthia said while Garchomp started to wait for another command. "How strong is Mismagius? I know she doesn't normally doesn't evolve without a Dusk Stone." Cynthia added while she cleared her throat.
There was a pause between both Pokémon and their trainers. Cynthia watched as Mabrey nodded while Mismagius floated towards her.
"Yeah, it's pretty weird how she evolved," Mabrey stated while he cracked his fingers. "She didn't do it for a while. I didn't want her to think I hated Maggy before she evolved so there's that." Mabrey put in as he waited for the Pokémon.
Both creatures seemed to think that there was more to this battle than just raining pain down on the other. Maggy watched as she floated next to her owner who patted her on the head. He looked at Cynthia who didn't seem as bothered by how the battle was going.
"You didn't come here for a battle, did you, Cynthia?" Mabrey asked with a tilted head. "You're usually trying to end the battle as fast and as effectively as possible," Mabrey stated while he blinked and rubbed some of the ash from his eyes.
It wasn't a lie. Cynthia did try to finish fights as fast and as with little effort as possible. Still? She couldn't explain that to him if she wanted to.
Cynthia cleared her throat while she started to think of what to say. Mabrey allowed her that, there was no fun to be had in a battle where both sides could win.
He closed his eyes before he started to tap his fingers on his arms, waiting for another answer from the woman. Mabrey watched as Mismagius started to float back and forth.
"Maggy, are you ok?" Mabrey asked the Pokémon before he dusted off his jacket. "This is going to be an interesting fight," Mabrey stated before he sighed to himself a moment later.
"Your right, I'm not here for a fight. Not one on this scale at least." Cynthia responded as she gazed at Garchomp. "Garchomp? Stand down for now. Mabrey? Can we talk before we possibly continue this battle?" Cynthia asked as she raised an eyebrow and looked at her friend.
Mabrey nodded as he turned to Mismagius while said Pokémon slowly floated off the battlefield. Cynthia didn't need to need powers or the ability to see into Pokémon to tell the duo had a strong bond like her and Cynthia. It was a powerful Pokémon in her mind, though. It had to be if it was this capable of battling.
"That's a strong Mismagius for one who doesn't seem to rely on type advantage," Cynthia said while Mabrey nodded.
"Comes from battling so often," Mabrey stated. "She likes to be around certain people she respects. It comes with the fact that she also seems to be reading minds. It honestly surprises me at times how often she knows what I want her to do before I say it." Mabrey added while Mismagius waited for the chance to strike once more.
Cynthia walked before her friend who slowly followed after her. His Pokémon followed behind with a smile that seemed to be almost unnatural.
Still? Cynthia found it rather amusing when she considered it. If the Pokémon enjoyed her company so often? Then she had a reason to come and check on her often.
"It isn't often that we get someone like the champion here, you know," Mabrey stated and tapped his Pokémon on the nose. "Maggy and I didn't expect you to come all this way for us. I'm honored that we had another chance to fight like this if I'm 100 honest with myself." Mabrey added with a shrug as he waited for the next reply.
Mabrey didn't want to dwell on the fact that he was waiting for her response. It was a rare time if she was here trying to challenge someone who hadn't done anything.
Still? He had reasons not to want to bother Cynthia who was honestly pretty powerful. The woman seemed far more laid back than she seemed to have any reason to be. It didn't bother him as it should have… But it did raise MANY questions which he honestly wanted to keep hidden if only for a bit longer. This mystery honestly interested him more than it did before at the moment.
"How has Maggy been since the last time I saw her?" Cynthia said while she and Garchomp slowly started to exit the field.
Still? He seemed rather interested if it meant they had another chance to talk like last time. It helped that she was often something of a mystery herself. He wanted to know how this woman who didn't seem to have anything had climbed to the top of the food chain in Sinnoh. It had to be a story worth telling if he was honest considering the backstory, he had planned in his head seemed rather weird compared to what this woman probably went through.
"She's still a bit sore from the last battle. Pokémon center didn't exactly take her to 100% in a few hours." Mabrey stated as he rolled his eyes. "And Garchomp? It's rare to see the champion's Pokémon. Well, it's rare to see her without someone or something losing when it comes down to it." Mabrey said while he seemed to wring his hands as he did so.
The two trainers were honestly not people who wished to handle this at length. It was possibly when it came to their tactics. He wanted to point out that there was a lot more at stake than simply their battle. They wanted this… No. They NEEDED this battle and it wasn't to be given to it at the moment and it didn't at all seem as if something was to throw it off.
He tapped his fingers on his arms and started to stare forward as he did so. there was far too much on the line for a failure here. If he didn't do something? It meant a loss that fed into his desire to beat her in battle once more.
"This battle is a lot more than simply win or lose," Mabrey said while he tapped his fingers on his arms with interest. "Honestly? I'm not one to challenge the champion to a battle. It wouldn't lead to anything if I did win and I'd be happy if someone who wanted the role challenged me to a battle." Mabrey said while he paced back and forth in pace.
There was a lot of truth in his words, she supposed. How the hell could someone enjoy being at the top if they didn't need to struggle. How in the world could you enjoy it without some sort of struggle for the throne of the Sinnoh region? If he wanted the throne that badly? He'd fight her for it. there was no reason he'd want it at the moment if she could honestly ignore it when it came down to it as of now.
This would be something else, she decided to talk now. There would always be a battle for the throne that either of them could carry out at any point they wished; it wasn't part of the cards.
They were going to be in battle sooner or later, it wasn't like they couldn't wait a few minutes to see if something else could come from this talk. She always wished to know why her enemies battled with one another. It was a lot harder to know and connect with someone if she didn't attempt to understand them.
Mabrey sighed and allowed Mismagius to flow to her and patted it on the head.
He had been curious as to what the hell was happening. He had been perhaps curious about what she wanted, what she had sought him out for. It was a lot more interesting, a lot neater at the second to see what had driven her to this length to type and stop him at the time.
She raised an eyebrow at him as her Garchomp looked at her. Both of them seemed to be at odds and peaceful around their Pokémon. He glanced at her before he sighed and rubbed his temples.
"You're not from Sinnoh originally, are you?" Cynthia questioned before she crossed her arms. "The Pigott? That's not from around here, right? She's a very beautiful Pokémon, you must be very proud of her." Cynthia added as the two started to stare down at the valley below them.
"She's a Pidgeot," Mabrey stated before he brushed off his shirt. "Traded my Combee for her. I'm glad to see that the little guy is being taken care of when it came down to it. I'd never trade a Pokémon who isn't taken care of. I have one more I want." Mabrey said before he tilted his head to the side and looked around.
"You don't want to be the champion, do you?" Cynthia asked to which Mabrey seemed to only glance around at her.
He had been prepared for being in charge of Sinnoh. He didn't want that, not yet at least. What would he aspire to be then? He had to climb the ladder sooner or later. He was going to be hopeful at the end of the day that he'd reach that level.
He stared at the woman who seemed to be gazing at the Mismagius. The Pokémon bobbed in the air in front of her and seemed to tip its hat towards her.
There was a smile that fell over his face at the second. The fact that he had been given this type of treatment was a lot odder than he expected now. He was happy here, unsure of what was to come given enough time and effort at the time.
This was a lot odder than he expected it to be. A LOT odder as of the time. He smiled all the same.
There was more to do.
