Chapter 9 - Mid to Dale

Harry and Tauriel had decided to walk back to Dale. Well, the choice had mostly been because Harry was tired. After all the magic she had expended the last several days, Harry was exhausted and very hungry. Tauriel watched her pointedly to make sure her lady did not collapse from the overuse of her magic. Smaug, now Harry's familiar, flew about Harry's head keeping an eye on her as well as looking around for danger that may come upon them while the she-elf was distracted over her lady's health. With his keen eyes he spotted a mottled group of men and dwarves accompanied by the pristine elves of Greenwood. Quickly he landed on his lady's shoulder.

"We have company ahead." he said to her and Tauriel.

Tauriel stiffened and focused ahead. Then she relaxed. Harry knew by her posture it was someone they knew. Her heart fluttered at the prospect that it was either of her mates. She was worried that they would be angry with her for disappearing to face the dragon on her own with just Tauriel by her side. But that fear did not stop her from launching forward the moment she recognized that it was Thranduil and Thorin together with the others. A shout had alerted the others that they had been spotted.

"Harry!" Thorin's voice rushed through the air to her ears.

No sooner did she hear her name was she crashing into armored arms. Lips crashed onto her own as her body was pulled flush to a hard chest.

"Amralime." Thorin whispered when he released her lips and placed his forehead on hers.

"Thorin." She whispered and then looked over to see Thranduil coming over on a huge elk.

Thranduil slid from the elk and landed pristinely on his feet. Harry pulled from Thorin and went to Thranduil. He wrapped her tightly against his tall frame. His blonde hair curtained around her.

"Nin mel, nin Harrui. Cin are safe." Thranduil breathed aloud placing her in front of him, "Don't ever do that again."

At this moment Smaug came around and landed on Harry's head. A tiny roar came from his mouth, and he flapped his wings. Thorin approached staring at Smaug. Harry reached up and Smaug leapt to her hand and wrapped around her wrist like a bracelet. She held him before Thranduil and stroked his tiny head.

"Is that?" Thorin started, almost choked.

"Yes, this tiny dragon is Smaug. I shrank him. You have your home back." She said, "I could not kill him. He is the last of his kind and he deserves to live out his life until it ends naturally."

"D.. Deserves!" Thorin almost growled, his temper coming to the forefront.

"Yes, he does." Harry answered coolly, her face going blank."

"What about my people?" Thorin ground out.

"They have been buried honorably. I have already fixed all of Erebor and Smaug will continue to be a part of it." She answered as little plumes of smoke left Smaug.

"I won't allow it." Thorin said.

"Oh?" Harry said her magic flaring, "You won't allow it? Did I ask for your permission? No, I did not. He is my familiar. And you will not harm him. He is now an extension of myself and my magic. To harm him is to harm me. I will not stay in Erebor if he will not be allowed." She stated calmly.

Thranduil held her in front of him. He did not like this anymore than Thorin but if what she said was true Smaug would be a part of their lives on the daily. A warning shot up his spine. Thorin had a nasty temper and the chances of him allowing Smaug to be present in his life was very slim. And Harry would not be parted from her familiar. He knew that much about witches. They had familiars and they were connected by magic. To kill a familiar was to kill the witch. To harm the familiar was to harm the witch. When the witch passed away naturally the familiar would mourn until it's death. They were magically connected. Harry would have to stay with him in the Greenwood for her own protection. He would not allow her to be harmed in any way. Even by her own soul-mark.

"Harry this will be a trying time for Thorin. All the havoc and chaos that Smaug inflicted on his family and people will not be forgiven. Even with him as your familiar. I don't Thorin will intentionally harm Smaug knowing that it would harm you but there are plenty of his people that would not care. They would seek to destroy him for vengeance, and you would be caught in the crossfire." Thranduil reasoned.

"I see. I believe that my home here will be Greenwood. I will visit often without Smaug to Erebor." Harry sighed and nodded.

"Harry?" Thorin said forlornly.

"I will protect my familiar. To harm him is to harm me. I will protect myself." Harry said her voice breaking.

"So be it." Thorin said his voice cracked.

The company present felt their hearts shatter. Harry and Thorin would never have the life they deserved. She would have a beautiful life with Thranduil but it would be overshadowed by the half-life she shared with Thorin. Their love would suffer.

"Let's return to Dale." Bard suggested to break the morose air.

Everyone voiced small agreement. With a turn they all headed to Dale. Harry moved ahead. Tears flowed down her cheeks freely. Tauriel rushed ahead and grabbed her shoulder as Harry apparated away. Her lady was angry, and she was hurt. She needed to be alone, but it was too dangerous to be alone. Tauriel would be her silent vigil and best friend.

(Thranduil and Thorin)

Their hearts dropped when Tauriel rushed ahead and grabbed Harry as they disappeared from sight. She was hurt and there was nothing they could say that would help the situation. Thorin had frozen when she disappeared. It hurt so much to see her flee from him. She was his one and she could not share her hurt with him because he was her hurt. His people were her hurt. How could she be his Queen when her familiar was the reason his people died and were displaced from their home. His people would try to harm Smaug because of the harm he had befell them. In turn they would harm their Queen. And many would not care. His heart broke. How could he fix this? How could he help his Queen and his people?

Thranduil almost felt pity for the dwarf king. He placed a heavy hand onto Thorin's shoulder. Thorin looked up at him then looked back towards where Harry had been.

"You know what you will have to do." Thranduil said to him and left him for his elk.

Thorin continued to stare where she had been until Fili called him. Thorin followed behind the rest of them going back to the rebuilt city of Dale.

(Harry and Tauriel)

Sobs wracked Harry's thin frame as Tauriel stood by vigilantly. They had landed near Laketown. Harry was not ready to be around other people. She needed to let herself pour out her feelings. Tauriel knew her pain. The she-elf doubted that the dwarves would welcome her with open arms as their prince's love. They would demand Kili to marry one of their own and she would be left out to grieve herself until she faded. It was a cruel thought that she had dwelled on many times.

"Oh Tauriel." Harry said with a hiccup, "Why must life be so hard?"

"I cannot say my Lady." Tauriel said sadly.

Before either could say anything more the sound of rushing horse hooves hand them on alert. There at the edge blazing towards them was Legolas with someone with him.

"Tauriel!" Legolas yelled out.

"My Prince." She said and lowered her bow.

"Where is my father?" he asked, holding the person slumped before him tightly.

"He is in Dale." she answered.

The person before him groaned and slumped into themselves further. Harry rushed forward with Tauriel, slowly lowering the male to the ground. There was an awful smell that wafted up from him when Harry pulled the tattered coat, he had around himself away. She almost gagged. She pitied Legolas that he had road all this way with this putrid smell invading him nose. Pushing that thought aside she tried to move all the matted hair out of her way to see the person. When she finally had the hair moved, she gasped in shock.

"Thorin!" she said and dropped her hand in shock.

"His father, Thrain." Legolas informed her, "He has been missing for years. Thought dead."

"My god." Harry whispered as she waved her wand over him, using every healing spell she knew to help him.

Thrain was so sick. It was a wonder he was still alive. How? Why?

"Let's get him to Dale. I'll apparate him. Hold on to me." Harry said and they grabbed her as she held to Thrain.

With a quick sidelong apparition Harry dropped them all right at the gates of Dale. Right before the returning party to Dale. Right there in front of Thorin.

"Thorin! It's your father." Harry cried frantically. "Help me."

AN: And that is where this chapter stops. I am sorry for my absence. Had a bunch of things to settle. I will continue soon.
