CHAPTER FOUR: The western air temple part 2

Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it.

Azula stared at the map before her, tracing the indented rivers and protruding valleys with her mind. The air nomads had detailed maps of places all over the world, and within the map room had a great world map. It was unlike anything Azula had ever seen, it was beautiful. Of course, it wasn't up to date as it had stopped being updated a hundred years ago, but it still marked all the major points and cities. She was trying to determine where exactly the ruins of the sun warriors were, when Ty Lee walked in.

"Hey," Azula looked up, smiling before looking back down at the map.

"Me and Kat just finished making lunch, wanna come eat," she asked, approaching the girl.

"Ill be there soon, just gotta find," Azula trailed off as she examined the map. She couldn't seem to find anything that remotely resembled the sun warrior ruins. Of course, it was a map of the whole world so there were a lot of things and it would probably be small, but still…

"Whatcha doing," the cheerful acrobat said as she walked over behind Azula, resting her head on her friend's shoulder.

Azula smiled at the cute girl, eyes still trained on the map, "I'm looking for the sun warrior ruins, they have to be here somewhere…"

Azula felt the warm pressure of Ty Lees chin leave her shoulder, along with the trickled of air that no longer tickled her ear. "You were serious about that?" She asked, peaking over at the map.

"Yeah," had she made it seem like she wasn't? "I remember reading a scroll about them, how they used the dragons to learn fire bending a long time ago. We also talked about them a little in the academy, don't you remember?" Azula asked. They had spent a brief amount of time discussing the origin of fire bending, but it was memorable. Azula turned to look at the acrobat, confused. Then it dawned on her, Ty Lee had not been there. That was the year her mother died, the year she and her grandmother left, coming back the next as if it hadn't happened. Azula never had asked about that, it had become lost in her memories, as it was soon after she got back that Azula's torment had begun. Still, it was a good question, though perhaps for another time, she thought as she washed Ty Lee walk to the side of the room.

"What are you doing?" Azula asked, turning away from the map and towards her friend.

"The airbenders were very secretive people, though they were nomadic and spiritually enlightened they could still be corrupted." She said as she tinkered with something. Azula was confused, though the fire nation taught there they were a threat, the rest of the world had told her they were a peaceful, free people. However, she was more confused by the fact that somehow Ty Lee knew this. Perhaps confused was the wrong term, surprised. She was surprised, she had assumed for some time her friend did not hail solely from fire nation, and when she had met the avatar, the last air bender, her suspiciouns had been confirmed as soon as she looked into his eyes. However, she didn't know she knew, and didn't understand why her friend wouldn't tell her.

Ty Lee was so engrossed in whatever she was doing that she didn't see the flash of emotions cross Azula's face, instead when she turned back she simply saw the same stoic expression she always seemed to wear. "My Nana had this phrase she used to tell me, "time corrupts," what she meant by that was the more a person lives the more a person sees, and the more likely they are to be corrupted by darkness." Looking up at the sky light Ty Lee pulled a lever that had been cleverly hidden behind a painting. A strange colored glass covered the skylight, making the light that filtered through a eerie blue color, dining it as well. Azula, in silence, listened to what her friend began to say. "Ancient airbenders lived much longer that normal people, they found a way to sustain their spirits youth, and through it sustain their bodies. It was a secret kept amongst the few, but like all their other secrets, never truly lost." She looked at the map and walked towards it, Azula following her. There were now strange new markings on the map, markings that hadn't been visible before. They seemed almost see through, written in ink that was only visible in certain tones of light. It was truly genius, she wondered why the fire nation. Hadn't thought of such a thing. Of course they had ink that could only be seen when close to a flame, but that wasn't generally a good idea consider paper was, while, flammable. Plus, once exposed it stayed that way. Azula took a mental note.

"The airbenders marked many places across the world, places that held power or significance, knowledge they didn't want to share." Azula stared across the beautiful display of symbols before her, one in particular catching her eye. It looked like an eye, only tentacles where homing from it. Not tentacles, tendrils, she thought. Glowarm. It was located somewhere in the earth kingdom a little ways away from kyoshi island, she wondered if perhaps -

"Found it," Ty Lee announced, drawing her from her worried thoughts. Azula turned to where she was pointing, spotting the symbol for sun and warriors next to one another. It wasn't far from where thay had located the western air temple, where they were now. Perhaps a days walk, maybe less. "Great," Ty Lee said, clapping her hands ecstatically. I can go tell the girls and then we can get-"

"I have to go alone," Azula said, grabbing her friend's wrist to halt her movements.

"What do you mean you have to go alone?" She asks, raising her voice in outrage. "You can't possibly know what you'll find there, you-" Azula gave Tylee a stern look, causing the acrobat to go silent.

"Look Ty, you guys have sacrificed enough for me. You and Mai have been their from the start, you stood by the side of the firenation princess no matter what but I never deserved it, not just because I was a terrible person but because," she drew off, stuttering as she continued. All the rage she had been feeling that was bottled up began to pour out. The more she tried to contain it the less controllable it became, eventually the bottle shattered on the floor and she was crying, yelling as she finished. "Because I'm not even a princess I'm just a whores daughter," she had finally admitted it, to her friend and to herself. She had claimed it didn't bother her, that she didn't care if she wasn't the child of Ursa. Only she had because it meant She wasn't a princess, she was a bastard. She knew her father had many, refusing to kill them because his bloodline was strong. She was just one he decided to allow to live with him in the palace. She was just one he decided to raise, and then torment. She was nothing, less than nothing, a whores daughter.

"What do you mean?" Came the calm, albeit quiet, voice of her dearest friend. Ty Lee walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder, using the other to grab her chin. She forced Azula's head up until they were eye level, and was shocked to find the rare tears glinting in her eyes.

"I… Ursa was never my mother, my mother was a watertribe whore," Ty Lees eyes widened, seeing the truth behind Azula's broken facade.

"Oh Azula," she said, wrapping her arms around her friend. "I'm so sorry," now the acrobat was crying as well, always so affected by the emotions of others. When Azula stopped shaking she pulled away slightly so she could see her face. "I know what it's like, to be told you were something only to find out it was all a lie." Azula's eyes widened, having an inkling of what her friend may be about to say. "My, my grandma was alive a hundred years ago, before the airbender extinction. She had moved to the fire nation to marry a man she fell in love with well traveling and this wasn't there when sozin comet came. But, she was an air bender." Ty Lee noticed Azula wasn't as surprised as she thought she would be, before realizing to her smart friend it had probably been obvious. "That's why I had so many sisters, because well my mom was the last airbender. She was supposed to teach us of the ways when we became of age or started showing airbending but she died, and it was only after she died that I started bending." This truly surprised Azula, how had she not realized Azula was an airbender? Why hadn't the acrobat received this, it seemed quite important. "My Nana took me to all the temples and taught me the ways of airbenders, as well as how to bend, she even let me take a few scrolls back to practice. We went back and I talked to you less, scared of what you would do if you knew. Then, you showed up at my house beaten and bloody and it didn't matter. And, well when my nana disappeared I never wanted to do it again."

Azula felt a surge of guilt wash over her, her friends grandmothers death had been her fault, and she hadn't even told her. "Ty Lee," she rasped, before the acrobat could start more. "Your grandmother was killed, and it was my fault."

Ty Lee stepped back, shocked. "What, what do you mean?" She asked in complete confusion. "I- she was- she died on a journey, she never- that makes no sense." Ty Lee shook her head furiously. "No that- why- how?!?!"

"I," Azula's throat went dry as she recalled the events. "Remember that period of time, perhaps a year long before I told you I was the avatar, that I stopped coming to school?" She asked, and seeing Ty Lee nod continued. "I- I was pregnant."

Ty Lees eyes shot open, a look of horror on her face. "Your dad… he,"

Azula swallowed and nodded.

"But!" Ty Lee said enraged, completely forgetting what this conversation was about. "You- you were a child, how, you-"

"Ty lee that's not the point," Azula snapped, feeling instantly bad. However her friend seemed to realize that Azula was uncomfortable and stopped. Of course uncomfortable is an understatement, as no such word could describe how Azula was feeling, still, attempting her best to school her expression she went on. "I… your grandmother came one night, I think it was night, night and day just blended but she came. And, I remember she stabbed me…" she trailed off, digging through the clouded trauma of her past. Everything was a blue, only small details.

"Why would she do that, i don't-" Ty Lee started but Azula cut her off.

"She, stabbed me here," she said, pressing and hand to her abdomen. Of course, all her physical scars were gone, courtesy of Katara, but still, she could almost feel it. Ty Lee bit her tounge as Azula continued. "I…she wasn't trying to kill me, she wasn't trying to kill…" she stopped talking, biting her lip. She hadnt really thought about it till now, she had spent so much mental energy blocking it out, but she had a child, a child that was dead. "Oh my i tried to kill my child," Azula said breaking down into tears. She chocked on them and fell to the floor, gasping for air.

Ty Lee ran to her side, catching her as she fell and crouching next to her, rubbing her back soothingly. Azula clutched her stomach, whimpering as she thought of the fact that she murdered a small, helpless creatures. "Azula, it's okay, you don't have to-"

"When the doctor came, I… he had a vial and i tried to drink it and then," then the man had tried to help her, tried to help her though he knew it meant his life. And it had, only she didn't get the vial in time. "I killed him too," she said, breaking down into sobs, the whole world blurring around her.

"Azula," she was vaguely aware of Katara and Mai entering, having been drawn to the ruckus. "What happened, is she okay?" Katara asked, crouching down and placing a hand on her forehead. Her temperature was not above the normal range for a fire bender, so why was she hunched over on the ground in pain.

"I think you guys should leave," Ty Lee said, knowing Azula may not like to be seen in such a vulnerable state. Katara looked at her in confusion before another wave of sobs took control of Azula.

"I killed them," she cried, no longer just thinking about her unborn child and the doctor. No, now it was everyone, everyone she had killed. Most of them were faceless creatures, nameless because she had never cared to know. Without care she had whipped their existence from the face of the world. Perhaps, from the afterlife they were looking down on her, laughing. She had truly got what she deserve, not even. She deserved so much worse.

"Go!" Ty Lee yelled angrily at both girls. Mai grabbed Katara arm, but the girl didn't budge.

"Look i care about her to and-" she began, angry at the acrobat. Did this girl think she owned Azula, she thought they were over this.

"Katara, I really think we should go," Mai said, tugging on her arm.

"No, I have had it with-" a blood curdling screech was released from Azula, a warning. Less than a second later while flames flew from her body, heading in all directions. Katara was only able to stare as the scorching hot flames headed towards her Mai. The knife thrower grabbed two of her weapons as if her knifes could stop death in the form of hot white fire. They braced themselves for the scorch of the flames, only it never came.

Ty Lee saw the flames being released and jumped back, pushing wind under her on reflex. Then, she did something she hadn't in years, she went through the motions, her arms flowing in a circle, and released a strong gust of wind at her friend and her flames. The flames dispersed, dying out, and Azula was flung back into a nearby wall. Her screaming stopped, and Ty Lee rushed over to her, fearing she may have hurt her. However, tears still flowed from Azula's eyes, and she still shook slightly.

"I'm sorry," she cried, burying her head in the neck of her friend. "I'm so sorry… I," she cried again.

"Shh shh it's okay," Ty Lee said, laughing in relief while crying at the same time. "I'm okay, we are all fine," she said, stroking the girl's ebony hair.

"Your grandmother died to save me, she killed the child and made it so I could never conceive again. My father stopped, but she was killed. She died for me," Azula stayed, silently enough so only the acrobat could hear.

"It's okay," Ty Lee said, reassuring Azula, "It's okay…" she soothed. Azula's cries stopped, and exhausted and relieved she fell asleep in the arms of her… her….

This is not meant to be politics or anything, I just wanted to express the pain I think Azula would be feeling.
