Poking his head up, looking very much like a meerkat as he double checked the camera was sitting securely atop of the tripod, Gar blinked a few times before a grin suddenly burst forth across his lips.
He leaned back against the charcoal 'L' shaped sofa that was pressed into the corner, right beside the double doors leading to the backyard. He draped an arm along the back of the cushions, partially hidden behind Raven who sat passively, with her legs crossed in the spot beside him.
There was a stereo system and home bar to their left hand side and to the far side of the camera's shot, there was a slither of the ping pong table that was also visible, having clearly been wheeled out of the way to accommodate the camera's placement.
"Whaaat's up, guys! It's Gar and welcome back to your favorite channel!" Gar announced, projecting his voice so much, there was a thin echo.
Raven offered up a small smile to Gar's viewers, her indigo eyes soft and patient as she lounged beside her boyfriend. She wore a pair of black, close fitting yoga pants that ended just below her belly button, revealing the smallest patch of pale skin on her stomach. On her top half, she had a plain black halter style top that had a waterfall hem, ending just above her navel.
She had on a violet, oversized checked boyfriend shirt that was long sleeved and looked to be about 3 sizes too big for her petite frame but it gave her a casual grunge appearance, rather than swamping her.
Reaching up, Raven toyed with the small crescent moon charm attached to the choker necklace she had around her throat, glancing over at Gar and waiting for him to continue his video.
Gar retrieved his arm from behind his girlfriend and leaned forward, his elbows resting against his knees. He wore a light, mocha colored t-shirt with rolled cuff sleeves, revealing the defined muscle in his upper arms. Several band bracelets and concert wristbands adorned his wrist and he wore a long thin necklace that had a plectrum, signed by Gar's favorite band on the end of it.
On his lower half, he wore a pair of almost black skinny jeans, ripped and torn in a stylish and controlled way.
He dragged a hand through his dark hair, a vivid green tinting the tips of his locks and refocused his forest eyes on the lens of the camera,
"I am back again with my lovely girlfriend, Raven." Gar stated, lifting his hands and gesturing towards the woman beside him,
Raven's smile grew a little wider and she lifted her hand, waving at the camera, "Hello."
"You guys are so lucky, getting a whole other video with the dynamic duo in it. I mean… last time we also had Vic in the video but… he's working today and… he doesn't get to be in these ones. They're strictly me and my lady."
She rolled her eyes and shook her head, the streaks of mauve hair falling against her jaw as she moved, "You're an idiot." Raven muttered, her tone laced with a quiet air of affection.
Gar chuckled and lightly nudged her shoulder, "You love it, Rae." He paused and slapped his hands together, drawing the attention back to what the video would entail, "So, as I said, we're back and we're doing another… Scary Text Story!"
"Yay." Raven deadpanned, giving him an amused and knowing expression,
He matched it and continued, "We're doing it at a great time. It's like… what…" Gar paused and glanced at his phone, confirming the time, "11pm and it's all dark and spooky outside and we're right by the giant ass windows…"
Gar turned his head and narrowed his eyes to peer out into the backyard, "It's dark enough where I can barely see so… fun times."
"I mean… will it actually be a scary story? Something tells me the answer is… unlikely." Raven snorted,
"You don't know… I picked one out at random so I'm hoping it's good?"
"It can't be any worse than the one we read last time… with the babysitter and the sister and stuff."
Gar shrugged, "I mean… don't underestimate bored people on the internet who write these things, Rae. It could be the worst piece of literature ever."
"It could be." She agreed, reaching down to the floor to pick up her mug of steaming hot tea.
Raven took a sip and let the warmth of the contents radiate between the palms of her hands for a long moment before she leaned forward and put it back down, creating a loud clink sound as it connected with the ground.
Gar chuckled, "Silkie just sat up so quickly in the kitchen. You interrupted him with your noise, Rae."
She looked at Gar with a blank expression, "Right. Sorry, Silkie."
Gar smiled past the camera, in the direction of the kitchen before he turned his attention to the camera, "Dick and Kory are in Gotham this week so Silkie's just been lazing about the house."
"We've taken him for a few walks…" Raven countered, snuggling back against the sofa cushions and making herself comfortable.
"Yeah, he's fine. He's just been a baby cos' Kory hasn't been here, giving him all the pats in the world." Gar chuckled, "Anyway… let's get this story started."
"What's it called?" Raven asked, crossing her arms over her chest as she waited,
He picked his phone up from the cushion he had placed it on and turned it over, clicking the screen a few times before the glow of the app highlighted his face, "So, this one is called, 'Grandma's Old House'."
"Ooh… sounds riveting." Raven said, dryly,
Gar raised an eyebrow at her, "If this ends up scaring the pants off you, don't come crying to me later."
Raven's brows creased, "Yep, because all of that definitely sounds like me."
He smirked and let his gaze fall back to his phone, "So, in case any of you missed the first video where we did this… Rae and I are basically gonna read a story from a 'spooky story' app and it's in the format of like… texting. We have yet to find one that gets us good."
"If that even exists." Raven mumbled, straightening up a little and leaning over Gar's shoulder to be able to see the screen of his phone,
Gar snickered, "Ready to start?"
"Mhm."
"Okay… you wanna be Jessica or do you wanna be Steve?"
Raven tilted her head, "Um… whichever."
"Choose, Rae. You get the choice."
"Ooh… lucky me." She said, sarcastically, "I'll be Jessica, I guess."
Gar nodded, "Great choice, babe."
In response, she simply rolled her eyes at her boyfriend, "Just start already, Gar."
"Your speaking first, Jessica."
Raven's face softened, "Oh. Okay…" She cleared her throat and narrowed her eyes to start reading.
'Are you awake? Hello!'
Gar leaned closer to read his part, 'Why?'
"Awesome relationship so far." Raven surmised, earning a grin from Gar.
'I can't sleep.'
'Really? Annoyed emoji.'
Gar blinked whilst Raven snickered at how he had phrased it. Lifting his chin, Gar gave the camera a goofy smile, "It obviously doesn't say 'Annoyed emoji' but like… that's what's on there. You guys know the one… the pissed off look, side glance one? Raven uses it a lot."
Raven nodded her head, "It's true. I do." She affirmed, with a light shrug of her shoulders. Peering back down at the phone, Raven tried to pick up where the couple had left off but faltered, "Oh wait… Gar, it's still you."
He followed her line of sight and read on.
'Is that why you woke me up? You're 16 years old! Why don't you tell mom instead?'
Raven's mouth fell open, "Ohh… they're brother and sister, I think. Not a couple."
"I was wondering cos' like… the language was not looking like a couple."
Tapping her fingers against Gar's phone screen, she scrolled down a little.
'She's not here. She's out with her new boyfriend.'
'I'm sorry. But, what do you want me to do?'
'Stay with me for a little.'
Raven paused and her brows furrowed together, "Ugh, this is going to be another text story with horrific grammar and spelling."
"Ah, your favorite thing in the world, Rae." Gar teased,
His girlfriend rolled her eyes at that, "That last one… 'Stay with me for a little.'... What? A little while? A little bit? Finish your sentence, Jessica."
Gar chuckled, "Yeah, I did think you'd just cut off for no reason and then I read over it and realized. Also, side note, but where's this brother at? Why's he not at home with her already?"
"Maybe he's older and he's moved out or something." Raven guessed, "Or… he's out… something like that, I assume. It might tell us when we get further into the story."
"Then let's keep going." Gar directed, clearing his throat as it was his turn to read.
'Why can't you sleep?'
Raven rested her chin on Gar's shoulder, 'I feel this weird sensation… I think I even saw a shadow outside the window… but, I'm not sure.'
'I'm sorry mom's not there for you, Jess… I know ever since our parents got divorced she hasn't been looking after you very well.'
Raven's dark brows knitted together but she continued her part in this, 'She doesn't let me live with you and dad. That sucks!' She took a breath, 'Can you come for me, brother?'
Gar closed his eyes and murmured, "Ohh… okay, so that explains it then."
Raven nodded her head but her face twisted still, "Also, whoever wrote this… I don't think they have siblings."
He laughed, "Yeah, from how I've seen Dick talk to his brothers… this is waaay too… formal feeling. The fact they say 'our parents' rather than just mom and dad… it doesn't feel the most genuine so far."
"Yeah, they lose points on that from me." Raven shrugged before jerking her head towards the phone, signaling for Gar to read the next part.
'I'm a state away and I don't even know where you're living now.'
"I don't know the history of the parents' divorce but… how do you not know where your sister and mom be living… like… you're clearly in contact. How do you not know?" Gar complained, earning a smirk from Raven whose expression told him she agreed with his sentiment.
'At grandma's old house.' Raven continued, pulling the story forward.
'The one in Kentwood?'
'No! An old property she had in the woods. It's my first night here. We just moved in.'
"Okay… sorry… I just need to hold this up again!" Gar declared, his hands held up towards the camera, as if he couldn't believe what had just been said, "A house in the woods?! You literally only need to see one horror movie, set in the woods, to know that ain't gonna end well!"
Raven scoffed, "I mean… I'd have to agree with you. Houses in the woods… they're never kosher." She looked directly into the camera, "Don't ever hop on board with any kind of woods real estate. You'll end up dead or missing. Just saying."
Gar's eyes were wide with a serious nature as he pointed at his girlfriend and vehemently nodded his head. He sighed and shook his head, fixing his gaze back to the phone screen.
'Shit! For real?'
'Yes, why? Have you been here before?'
'I haven't been there, only heard about it.'
'It is more than creepy, it's fucked up! It's so old and abandoned it doesn't even have most windows and the back door is also not there.'
Raven jerked back and pulled a disbelieving face, her features all screwed up at the absurdity of what she had just read aloud, "I'm sorry, what?"
"It doesn't have… most windows." Gar repeated, his face also a picture of utter confusion.
"There's no back door?" Raven questioned, as if she had read the words incorrectly, "What… what the heck… is there just a big rectangle in the wall then? That's basically a green light for some kind of creature or murderer to hack you into pieces."
Gar nodded, "And you couldn't even complain. No door? That's basically a stamped invitation into the house."
"This story is so stupid."
"We're not even halfway through it yet, either." Gar told her, earning a groan and an exaggerated eye roll from Raven. He smirked and looked back at his phone, scrolling a little and clearing his throat, preparing himself to continue reading.
'So, are you in bed or what?'
'Yes! About to get under the covers so that is less scary.'
'For real?'
"There's a picture on the app that Jessica has 'sent'. It's just her under the covers. It's nothing spectacular." Raven explained, waving her hand dismissively.
Gar narrowed his eyes at the phone in his hand, 'Can't believe you at times. Laughing emoji.' He paused, 'But it's not so bad though.'
'Excuse me… Look at this house and it's surroundings.'
Raven sighed, "Two more pictures… it's just one of a creepy looking forest and the other is… a decrepit house you'd likely find if you googled exactly that." She paused and got back into character, 'It's a shithole!'
'The exterior of the house is indeed very deficient and the surroundings are very creepy… but at least nothing bad has happened to you! Be happy.'
Gar crinkled his nose at the wording, "I'm sorry… has… has Steve just pulled a thesaurus out of his ass or something?"
Raven snorted and hid her quiet giggles behind her hand as Gar continued his small rant.
"Seriously… deficient? What the… you can tell whoever wrote this was running outta words and just googled another one but… it doesn't fit."
"No, yeah… it's… completely out of character. Steve doesn't seem like the kind of guy to say or understand what deficient means." Raven added, shaking her head and tilting Gar's hand with hers so that she could see the lit up screen of his phone a little bit better.
'I'm telling you I'm alone in this creepy house and you're telling me to be happy… fuck off, Steve!'
Raven glanced at the lens of the camera, "God, calm down, Jessica. That was unnecessary." She said in a jokey way, earning a chuckle from Gar who picked up the next part of the story.
'Don't be rude!' Gar reprimanded, before taking a brief pause, 'It's just that… nevermind… it's nothing.'
'What?'
'Nothing, forget it! I don't wanna scare you.'
Gar groaned and let his head fall back against his shoulders, "Ugh, don't you just hate people like that?"
Raven nodded, "It's along the same lines as people who say things like, 'I have a secret. Oh, but I can't tell you.'."
"Yes! It's like, then why mention it at all, you douche." Gar grunted. Raven nodded and reshuffled how she was sitting on the sofa before she placed a hand on Gar's shoulder that was furthest away from her, leaning in closer to continue reading.
'Why? Come on! You already spoke, now you gotta tell me!'
'Apparently, others had it worse in that house. Grandma used to say some weird shit happened there.'
'Tell me about it.'
'Have you lost your mind? You were scared to the bone. How telling you about this weird shit is gonna help you?'
'I don't know. But, I got the right to know. Don't you think?'
'That's a good point but I still don't think it's the best idea.'
'You can't just leave me hanging. Please!'
'That house used to belong to another family before grandma moved there, did you know?'
'No, I had no idea.'
'To this family, a dad, a mom and a daughter… they built the house when their daughter was little but they noticed something very weird immediately.'
Raven pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed, dropping her chin before she breathed out a laugh, "God, the way this thing is written… it's so awful."
Gar smirked, "I bet this is really grinding the writer in you, huh?"
"Considering that it's my job to write things? Yeah. It's pretty irritating." She confirmed before she continued,
'What?'
'A hermit that lived somewhere in the woods started to visit them.'
'What?'
'The man visited the baby every single day. The parents saw no problem with it because he seemed like a good man… As the little girl grew up she even called him uncle.'
Gar paused and slowly looked up at the camera and minutely shook his head, but it was enough to be visible to his viewers, "Booo!" He called, cupping his hands around his mouth for a moment, "These parents suck already. If you have some hermit dude coming up to you and hanging around your baby… maybe don't let him keep seeing her? That's bad parenting."
"You'd surely be a little hesitant about a guy who lives in the woods coming to see your baby daughter every single day." Raven pointed out, earning an exhausted shrug of the shoulders from her boyfriend. She smirked and continued.
'But who was that man?'
'He was a young man who claimed to live alone in the woods. He had a random appearance but he seemed to have good intentions… nevertheless, everything changed once the girl was older.'
Raven was laughing behind her hands again, "A random appearance?" She repeated, trying to stifle her giggles.
Gar joined in her laughter, "Maybe they mean like… his appearance in the woods is random… rather than his face."
She tilted her head, "Mm maybe, yeah. At least, that would make a bit more sense."
"I have a feeling good ol' hermit in the woods man is about to get a whole lot creepier."
Raven nodded and picked the conversation back up, since it was her turn again.
'Why?'
'He seemed to care a lot about the girl.'
'Was he in love with her?'
'You could say so but it was more like obsessed.'
Gar threw his hands up in the air, "Note to all parents… if you have a guy come to you from the woods, talking about wanting to hang out with your baby… firstly, say no. If you fail that step, then maybe ask… hm… is it really a good idea to keep that shit going well into your baby's teen years?"
"Yeah… how old is this guy… surely the parents cut it off or were they over here secretly hoping they'd get together? I'm so confused."
"Join the club, babe. But, one thing, these parents are awful."
"The parents in the first one of these were crap too. D'you remember?"
"Mhm… these stories… the parents need to do better. Just sayin'." Gar criticized. Raven smirked but returned her attention to the phone.
'What happened then?' Raven queried,
'She eventually got a boyfriend and was going to get married but…'
'But what?'
'The day of her wedding she was taking too long in coming out of her room. When her parents finally broke in they found her dead.'
"Oh, I 100% already know who did it." Gar muttered, only to be shushed by Raven.
She cleared her throat and put on a high pitched, falsetto tone, 'Oh God! Is this real!?'
"Very nice, Rae." Gar complimented her before reading his part, 'According to grandma it was.'
'How did she died?'
Raven growled in frustration, "The way this is written is giving me a migraine."
Gar smirked and continued, ' He stabbed her.'
'Omg, that sounds terrible. How did grandma ended up in that house then?'
"Oh, come on!" Raven protested, her face screwed up at the grammatical issues.
'The parents of the girl did no longer want the house. They tried to catch the man with the help of other people but weren't successful.' Gar kept going, looking at Raven to hear her reply as Jessica.
'So they sold the house?'
'Not exactly. They gave it away… At first no one wanted to take it because of what had happened but then grandma's dad took the house.'
'After all that? What?'
'Yes. He didn't believe in the story… when grandma was a teenager she said she saw the man more than once… at first, her dad didn't believe until the man tried to kidnap grandma.'
'That's terrible!'
Raven paused and chewed on her lower lip, "You'd really expect to have more of an explosive response to that. Your grandma almost got kidnapped…"
"We're past that, Rae. These kids suck." Gar grumbled, holding his phone closer to continue reading, 'Luckily great-grandad was able to find them and he shot the man. He died but before passing away he cursed the house.'
'That's why grandma moved to Kentwood?'
'Yes, and she never came back to that house.'
"How!? How does this family not know anything about this? Like… you don't think this shit would come up at some point in conversation? Maybe an interesting anecdote at granny's funeral? Something?"
"How do you know the grandma is dead?" Raven asked,
He shrugged, "I'm assuming she is. The way it's worded… sounds like gam gam is 6 feet under."
Raven lifted her shoulders and persevered, 'Then how did mom end up with this house?'
'As soon as grandma died, mom inherited all grandma's properties.' Gar smirked and glanced at Raven, "Eyy, told you grandma was dead."
Raven snorted at his celebration over that detail and kept the flow going, 'Since she lost the house in Kentwood due to gambling, I assume that's why we're living in this house now.'
'Must be.' Gar stopped, "Oh my God… there is so much family drama to unpack here. Their parents got divorced so Jessica and mom moved into a horror house, grandma almost got kidnapped and then lost a place due to gambling… they need to set up a meeting with Jerry Springer or something!"
Raven smiled but didn't indulge him, at least for the moment, 'I feel so scared right now brother.' She halted and groaned, scrubbing a hand across her face, "Stop referring to him like that, Jessica. Siblings don't do that. It's weird."
Gar smirked, 'It is a creepy story but you know how grandmas are we don't even know if it's a real story.'
'But I keep feeling a presence in this house.'
'See, you said you wouldn't be scared and here are you now.'
'But is true, I keep feeling and hearing things.'
Raven exhaled carefully and shook her head, "I'm just… I'm trying super hard to just ignore it because I can't with this wording."
'Jess, even if the story is not a lie, he's dead by now and there's not such thing as curses.' Gar continued, lightly tapping the screen of his phone so that it wouldn't go dark and lock itself.
'I guess, you're right. I'm feeling incredibly tired anyways. Let's sleep now.'
'Goodnight Jess! You'll be fine!'
'Night Steve!'
"Steve is not someone I'd be contacting if I was scared. He brought… no reassurance. Like, at all." Raven commented,
Gar chuckled and deepened his voice, '1 Hour Later.'.
Raven shifted in her seat, noticing it was her turn to speak again, 'I keep hearing things outside. I'm gonna go check. It might be mom!'
Her eyes widened for a fraction of a second, "Uh oh… another picture… it's Jessica's bloody hand and she is crawling through the leaves in the woods... doesn't bode well, I'll say that." Raven deduced, her eyes falling to the phone screen again, 'Steve! Help!'
Gar lowered his voice once again, '5 Hours Later.' before he coughed a little.
'Jessica, I just woke up. What is that?' Gar expressed, injecting as much panic into his voice as he possibly could, 'Mom said she couldn't find you when she came home… where are you!?'
Slowly, he looked up and sighed, whilst Raven stared at him with a brow raised, "Is that it? That's the end?" She scrutinized, her tone expressing how confused she was.
"Mhm. That's the end." Gar confirmed, clicking the button at the top of his phone to lock it before he slid it back into the pocket of his jeans, "Well then… what'd we think, babe?"
Raven shook her head and she slumped back against the sofa cushions, "So… just one thing… to anyone who is looking to submit stories to apps like this. Please… please just proofread your work. That's all you've gotta do. And, better yet, get someone else to proofread it. Beyond all those mistakes just being really annoying, they also break any kind of immersion you might have created. It takes you out of the story because you're sitting there staring at the way the sentence has been worded instead."
"Y'all are getting free author tips, right here." Gar grinned,
She playfully rolled her eyes and bent over, scooping up her tea which was no longer hot enough to be emitting steam but Raven took a sip without grimacing so it could only be assumed it had not gone completely cold just yet.
"That story was… interesting." Gar hesitated,
"It was so bad." Raven said, being brutally honest in her opinion.
Gar snickered, "Would you prefer to read this one or the first one… the third sister one from the first video?"
She scoffed, careful not to spill her beverage, "The first one. That one wasn't great but it was better than this one."
"Yeah, I think I agree, to be honest." Gar scratched his jaw and inhaled deeply, "This one just… did nada for me. It was boring. And, I just can't get over how stupid the situation with the creeper hermit guy was!?"
Raven nodded in earnest, tapping her fingertips against the side of her cup, "The backstory wasn't really all that compelling." She agreed,
Gar sighed and sank back into the comfort of the couch, "Well, what a let down."
"Were you expecting a masterpiece?" His girlfriend snorted,
"Well, no but… I thought it would be… better." Gar finished lamely,
Raven gently patted Gar's cheek, "Maybe the next one will be better than this train wreck."
Gar laughed and nuzzled her hand before she let it fall back into her lap. He exhaled noisily and slapped his thighs with his hands before he plastered one of his signature grins across his face and lifted his chin, angling all of his attention on the camera which was still blinking red to show he was recording.
"Alright, well… that's it for today's video. I had hoped the story would be creepier but… these text story apps are hit and miss to say the least." Gar paused and shook his head, twisting at the hips to kiss Raven's cheek, "Thanks to Rae for joining me with this. I love reading these things with you, babe. It's fun."
Raven blushed slightly but nodded and smiled in agreement, "Yeah, I actually enjoy doing it more than I thought I would back when you first asked me."
Gar thrust his arms up into the air, "Woo! We love to see it, guys." He chuckled, "We're gonna go watch a movie now… maybe order late night pizza cos' I'm kinda hungry again…"
"You're always hungry." Raven murmured, shaking her head at him,
He shrugged, "Anyways, I hope you guys liked this one. Remember, don't stay overnight at a house that doesn't have a back door." He paused whilst Raven giggled, "Go ahead and smash the like button if you did like this video. Also, don't forget to subscribe to my channel, if you haven't already! Otherwise, I'll see all you lovely people in the next one!"
Raven smiled and timidly waved her fingers in the direction of the camera whilst Gar beamed and held his index and middle fingers up in the oh so familiar gesture that his viewers had become so accustomed to.
He threw the hand gesture up and winked, "Peace!"
Author's Note: I don't know if I've mentioned this before but there's 2 apps I use for these stories and they are called: 'Hooked' and 'Addicted' if you guys were interested in reading any of them for yourselves. They're mostly free and some of them are fairly entertaining.
Hope you liked this one. For once, it was on time so woo!
Comment your thoughts. Thanks! ^.^
