Edd woke up early in the morning to agonizing pain in his stomach, and out of pure instinct, clutched it and curled up into a ball. A few seconds later, the pain started to spread out until every inch of his body was throbbing. He had never been in so much agony before.
Suddenly, the pain vanished as quickly as it had appeared, and Edd just laid there, unable to process what had just occurred.
A few moments later, he grabbed his cell phone that was on the nightstand and checked the time.
2:37 AM
Edd put his phone back on the nightstand and tried to go back to sleep but couldn't.
About forty minutes had passed before he gave up. He was wide awake after what had happened to him and something about him felt different, but he couldn't figure out what it was.
He walked out of bed and went to the bathroom down the hall to take a shower. He wasn't going back to bed anytime soon, so he might as well get it done.
However when he took his hat off, he noticed something incredibly strange. His hat was completely white, it was as if all the black had been drained out somehow.
"How is this possible?" Edd thought to himself.
He then looked at the mirror and what he saw horrified him.
His eye color had somehow transitioned from green to violet sometime in the night.
"This has to be a dream!" Edd thought to himself. "This can't be happening!"
Edd decided to pinch himself and unfortunately, this wasn't a dream. This was reality.
"Okay Eddward calm down, there has to be a logical explanation for this."
He began thinking and came up with four theories as to how this happened.
His first theory was that he had somehow become colorblind, but this idea was quickly debunked after he realized that because nothing else had changed color aside from his hat and eyes.
His second theory was that he had an illness of some sort. After all he did wake up to excruciating pain not that long ago, but that didn't explain what had happened to his hat.
The third, and the most outlandish theory to him, was that his hat had somehow transformed him in some way. However, that would make no sense either since that would mean that magic and supernatural forces existed to some extent. Furthermore, why would his hat wait until now to do this? After all, he had been wearing it for over a decade at this point.
The last, and most likely theory, was that he was simply hallucinating. Edd chalked it up to that and tried to get his mind off of it.
After finishing his shower and getting dressed, he went on his computer to see if he could find anything there.
A bit of research later and Edd was now convinced that he was hallucinating, because not only were purple eyes extremely rare, but also because there didn't seem to have ever been an instance of someone's eyes changing from green to purple before.
He decided that he would go to the school nurse later that day if the hallucinations didn't go away.
Edd put on his brown jacket and went outside to see his friends Ed and Eddy.
While Ed was still Edd's best friend after all this time, the same couldn't have been said for Eddy.
The two still considered each other friends, but they have slowly been drifting apart for the past couple of years due to Eddy's greed and ego. Edd swore that Eddy felt more and more like his boss than his friend as time continued to pass. Because of this, Edd barely helped Eddy out with his scams anymore. At this point him and Ed were 18, and Eddy was nearly there as well. If Edd had to be honest, he didn't see Eddy having a very bright future ahead of him. Eddy still tried to scam his peers almost every day, his grades were poor, and he had nearly been expelled on several occasions.
Edd couldn't help but feel like he was partly responsible for what had happened to Eddy. He wondered what would have happened if he had put his foot down earlier. Sure he had questioned and hesitated to help Eddy with his schemes before, but it wasn't until about three years ago that he outright refused to help him.
Eddy was not happy with Edd's refusal to partake in his scams and threw many insults and threats in his direction, even going as far to suggest that they should end their friendship.
The two never did end their friendship for Ed's sake, but they hung out much less than they had before.
"Good morning my friends," Edd said as he approached Ed and Eddy.
"Hey shorty," Eddy replied.
Eddy had given Edd this nickname around a year ago when he had surpassed him in height. Ed was now 6'4, making him the tallest kid in the cul de sac. However, Edd and Eddy weren't as lucky. Edd had only grown to be 5'3 while Eddy managed to grow up to 5'4. This made him a whole inch taller than Edd and he made sure that Edd wouldn't forget about it either.
Ed didn't say anything though he just locked eyes with Edd with a look of confusion on his face and Eddy soon did as well.
"Double D, what's wrong with your hat and eyes?" Ed asked.
Edd was now mentally freaking out, because if Ed could see it, then that meant it was not a hallucination, this was real.
"Uhh…" Edd began. "Well I just got a new hat, that's all."
"Okay, but that doesn't explain what happened to your eyes sockhead," Eddy replied.
"I don't know," Edd admitted. "I plan on getting it checked out soon though."
"Greetings Ed-boys," a voice from behind Edd said. "Is there something wrong?"
"Yeah Rolf," Ed reliped. "Double D's eyes are purple. "I think he's transforming into a reptilian."
Edd sighed at Ed's comment, while Rolf began looking at him.
Edd watched as Rolf's expression turned into one confusion, to one of concern.
"Other Ed-boys leave now!" Rolf nearly yelled.
"But why?" Ed asked.
"YOU DARE QUESTION THE SON OF A SHEPHERD!" Rolf yelled angrily.
"Okay, okay we're going!" Eddy said, clearly in fear. "C'mon Ed let's go."
With that Ed and Eddy ran away, leaving just him and Edd.
