so welcome to my new fic ! :D. As many of you know i like to title my fics after songs and this one is no different. the song this fics title comes from is I know i have a heart from Andrew Lloyd Webbers Cinderella. i would defiantly recommend listening to it. it is sung by the amazing Carrie Hope Fletcher (who if you love McFly is Toms little sister) anyway i really hope you enjoy and let me know what you think, (i am still working on Radio silence but i have had this one buzzing around my brain for a while so i thought i would right it in the hopes it would let me focus on radio silence )
Enjoy :)
Pulling over as far as she could Kate sighed. Switching on her hazard lights she reached over pulling a city map from the glove box. She hated driving in cities at the best of times but Canberra was totally different from anything she had known as it was mostly on a round lay out with roads leading off two main ring roads and it was confusing the hell out of her. Resting the map against the steering wheel she reached over again rummaging through her bag pulling out a letter.
She had been accepted on to officer training for the Royal Australian Navy at the Defence force Academy based at the University of New South Wales. Her Main degree which she had to complete alongside her training was in political studies with a minor in Geography.
Checking the address on the letter for the campus, she unfolded the map trying to find where it was. Finding the point with relative ease. Next, she had to find where she was in relation to the campus. Looking out of the window she was pleased to see she had actually stopped in front of a road sign. Finding the road, she was on was also fairly easy and she was closer than she thought, judging by the scale of the map she was only 20 miles away. She just had to follow this road to the intersection turning right and follow that road before making a left followed by a right and she was there.
Folding the end pages in she let the middle section open as that's the pages she needed she placed the map on to the passenger seat so if she did get lost or have to make a diversion then she would be able to find her way.
Indicating to pull out she checked to see if it was clear in her mirror. As she went to pull out a black car Spead past almost narrowly avoiding ploughing in to her.
"Idiot!" she called cursing under her breath. As the drive car failed to even acknowledge they were in the wrong.
Taking a deep breath, she managed to regain her composure before pulling out for a second time, this time she managed to get back on to the road without any issues.
It took her slightly longer than she had anticipated to reach the campus as she had miscalculated the scale of her map and at how fast she was allowed to drive. Pulling in to the gates she showed her letter of acceptance to the guard on duty.
Driving through she turned her focus on finding a space to park up in the already packed carpark. Spotting a empty space she made a b-line for it, indicating to pull in she was just about to move when she was once again cut up by the same car that had cut her up on the main road.
"idiot" she cursed "did you not see I was indicating" she called out of the window. She called as a blond woman got out of the car pulling a expensive designer looking case from the boot.
"You snooze you lose" she half smiled looking at the old fiat Kate was driving compared to her new land rover.
She eventually found a free parking space at the far end of the carpark. Carefully pulling her car in to the narrow space she decided to leave her stuff in the car until she had found out where she needed to go.
Walking in to the main building she looked around trying to find where she needed to go. The atrium was alive with new students all getting their welcome packs and trying to find where they needed to be, assisted by family members holding belongings or saying goodbye.
Trying to block it all out as it was a harsh and cruel reminder of all she had lost she eventually found the welcome desk, heading over she smiled at the Air force Officer who was manning the table
"Kate McGregor" she said
"Welcome" the officer smiled sorting through a box marked 'M'- 'Q' "here we are" he smiled handing Kate an envelope with her name on "so you are in Hammersley building in room 202. In here is your campus map, class schedule, keys" he smiled "this is to get your ID which you will need to wear everywhere on campus and this is for your uniforms" he said handing her 2 more pieces of paper both of which she would have to fill out additional information.
"Thank you" she said taking the things
"You're welcome. There also will be a campus tour departing from here I half an hour which I recommend you go on to refresh your mind of things" the officer said.
"Thank you" Kate said heading away to find where she needed to get her ID badge from.
After collecting her uniforms, getting her ID and going on the campus tour. She made her way to the halls of residence. Her room was on the second floor. The corridor where her room was on had 6 doors running off, one was a shared bathroom, one was a kitchenette/common room and the other 4 were all bedrooms.
Unlocking her door, she sighed looking around the room. It was bright and spacious. The one wall was taken up by the single bed. The wall opposite had a desk with draws built in under it as well as three shelves that ran the whole length of the wall sat above. the wall behind the door had a built-in wardrobe with little cubbies on the side. There was a large window above the bed which looked down on to one of the many barbeque areas that were dotted around the accommodation area.
Dumping her stuff on the bed she sighed. She still had many more trips to make but she just wanted to take a breather.
After dragging the last of her belongings up to her room she sighed, she had no idea where she was going to put it all so it was tidy especially as they would have inspections by the division officer. unpacking her clothes, she began pushing them in to the cubby holes in the wardrobe.
"Knock Knock" a voice called walking in to the room.
Turning Kate smiled at the young woman who had walked in to her room,
"Umm Hi" she said
"hey I'm Nikki I am across the hall I just thought I would come and introduce myself as we are hall mates" she smiled
"Kate" Kate replied holding her hand out shaking Nikkis.
"So, Army ,Navy or Air force" Nikki asked
"Navy. You?" Kate replied pushing one of the boxes under her bed
"Same." Nikki smiled "so I was wondering if you maybe wanted to go grab dinner and explore a bit"
"Umm" Kate looked at her watch, she hadn't realised how late it had got and how hungry she was feeling "okay" she smiled grabbing a jacket off her bed she would sort the rest of her stuff out later.
Heading across campus to the mess halls she listened as Nikki talked to her, telling her, her whole life story from where she was from to what she was studding and what she was eventually hoping to do once she had graduated. Nikki also said that they should compare their class schedules for their defence classes to see if they were in any of the same to, they could work together.
Arriving back at her room later that evening she was feeling exhausted, after the long drive earlier that day and from how busy she had been since she had arrived. Thankfully she had already sorted her bedding out. Changing in to her pyjamas she crashed falling asleep almost instantly. Thankfully she had the weekend to finish sorting her things out and make her room feel a little more like home before classes began on Monday. She was excited and nervous. She had worked so hard to get where she was and she was dreading going back to where she had come from. She couldn't go back even if she wanted to so she had to make this work.
