Chapter 12:

Waiting...

Kili watched them dissapear into the bedroom with mixed feelings. His instincts were clammoring for him to not leave her alone, even if it was with his mother and a friend. He knew he was on the verge of being extremely overpretective and did his best to squash such feelings.

"Kili...is she alright? After all that?" Thorin's voice broke his silent arguement and he shook his head to clear it. "As far as I can tell she is unharmed. Except for not recieving propper meals, expecially in her condition, she seems to be no worse for wear." Kili paused as he looked at his uncle with narrowed eyes.

"What of Dain? Have we found him yet?" His voice was hard and Thorin felt the same anger boiling beneath the surface. "Not yet, but Dwalin and his men are close. After getting one of Dain's men to speak, we found out that Dain is currently in Dale. He has been there most of the time we were looking for him."

Slamming his fist against the table Kili cursed loudly, "of course he'd be that close. Why did we not think of that before?" Knowing where his nephew's thoughts had lead him because he'd thought the same, Thorin reached out to grip Kili's shoulder. "It isn't your fault Kili, we did our best with the information we had. No one could have asked or expected more."

Knowing Thorin was right, Kili did his best to let his anger go but it wasn't easy. A couple deep breaths and he finally turned to look at the entrance to the bedchamber, that was when a thought occured to him. Looking to his uncle he tilted his head, "I just realized...we do not have a place for the child."

Thorin blinked at the sudden change in subject but was glad of it, he nodded his head in agreement. "That is true. I've spoken to Bofur, Bifur, and Bombur of the events of last night. They all wish to come see her, but also want to help with preparations for the child."

Kili smiled at that, "if she is up for it, they can visit anytime. I know Ochre would be happy to see them all." He then moved around the table towards the space on the other side of the bedroom, there was an open wall and he pointed at it. "This will make a good place to put the child's room, I will welcome any help I can get to finishing it before Ochre gives birth."

It made Thorin proud that Kili was picking up on things quickly, considering he hadn't been able to be there for Ochre durring the beginnings of her pregnancy. He hoped his nephew remained so for what little time remained as well, which reminded him. "Does she know how long that will be or is she waiting for Oin to give her an estimate?"

Sitting down next to his uncle, Kili shook his head. "She isn't sure, she thinks it will be fairly soon though." Thorin sighed at that as he gripped Kili's shoulder, "I know this from both your birth and that of your brother, she is very close. Maybe a week or two, but she is already larger than your Amad was with either of you. This is her first, so I am hopeful that it will proceed in the normal way."

Interested in hearing more from his uncle on this subject Kili scooted closer avidly captivated by his uncle's firsthand opinion. He knew he'd need it and any advice he could glean, "how did it go with Fili then, he was Amad's first after all." Thorin closed his eyes as he thought back those many years ago.

Flashback-

Her water had broken.

"It figures this child would want to come now of all places. Impaitent little one, just like it's father and uncle." Dis fairly growled this as she glared down at the puddle at her feet.

His sister was being downright surly and frankly he hadn't the faintest idea why. It was just water, even her husband was at a loss. Only Balin and Oin seemed to know what was the matter as they smiled at the confused expressions on both the younger dwarrow's faces.

"She is in labor, she will be quite the angry one for a good few hours yet. Thorin are ye sure you want to be here for this, it is her husbands place not yours." Balin's voice was calm and reasonable which annoyed Thorin greatly. Dis looked their way before any response could be voiced, "Don't just sit there like a lump of rock, get over here!"

Not sure to whom she was speaking all four men moved to her side. Dis looked pale to Thorin which for her wasn't normal, she'd always had a healthy glow about her. Worried, Thorin stepped closer and soon regreted it, Dis lashed out with her hand and gripped his upper arm. Hard.

Hissing at the pain he asked, "what do you need?" Dis fairly screetched into his ear, "I need more competent men around me, I cannot have this babe standing here. Take me home to my bed, now. Make sure Oin comes with, I will need someone who knows what they are doing to be there for it."

They all hurried to do so, Dis' husband Ruili picked her up and carried her back to their home. They had been out on a walk, one of Oin's sugestions. It was to help get Dis ready for the birth, but clearly it had done more than that. Thorin was just happy that they weren't that far from their home, he would hate to put Dis through the experience of giving birth outside in the open.

Once in their home, Ruili placed her on their bed and sat at her side. Oin hurried to her other side and started spouting out instructions. Thorin was made to gather lots of cloth, while Balin mixed up the herbs that Oin had handed to him. Ruili just stayed next to his wife, but he looked to be in pain and Thorin understood why when he saw that Dis was gripping his thigh. In pain or not, his sister was strong.

Time drug on as did the insults that Dis kept hurling their way, she had spouted some rather colorful phrases and Thorin was mildly impressed. Then the babe started to emerge. Thorin sat frozen as he stared at the goings on, never having witnessed a child born in his whole life. It was a rather exausting process thus far and he worried for his sister, she pushed when told and before long the child was half out.

Thorin just cringed at the pain his sister must be going through to push such a large child out of her body like this, it must be excurciating. After another good hour the dwarflling practically poped out when Dis gave one final and gutteral push. She screamed the entire time only to have the babe let out it's own wailing cry to match hers.

Balin swooped in and wiped at the babe with the cloth Thorin had brought, Oin had Dis drink the concoction they had made. Balin turned to Ruili and handed him a hot blade, the dwarrow looked rather itimidated as he took it. Balin held up the long and gangly cord that still connected the child with it's mother as he spoke gavely, "cut it cleanly."

Gulping Ruili did so and before he could say or do anything Balin was off towards a basin of warm water to clean up the child. Oin swooped in and told Dis to push once more as she did Thorin was semi-disgusted to see what followed after the babe. Oin quickly disposed of it and Thorin sank into the chair in which he sat, exausted.

Balin didn't let him rest long though, "Thorin, take this basin over so that Ruili may help clean his wife of the blood and after birth." Thorin did so in a daize and Ruili looked at them all with a expectant expression as he took the basin and dipped a cloth into it. "The child? Is it alright?" Dis snorted at that as she swiped the cloth from him, "of course it is, it's been wailing non-stop."

Chuckling at that, Balin nodded his head as he turned and carried the now swaddled babe back over. As was tradition he held the child out to Thorin whom blinked at it before he took a deep breath and took the child, he just hoped he wasn't being too rough. He opened the blanket enough to see the squirming child, it had a large tuft of bright golden blonde hair, like it's father.

Looking down he blinked and smiled, he then rewraped the child leaving only it's head exposed. He then bent his head to kiss it's forehead, giving the child his blessing as was his right. Turning he walked the remaining steps to his sister and brother-in-law. He then handed the babe down to Dis as he spoke deeply, his voice unstable with emotion. "You have a son Namad. Dayamu Khuzan ai-menu." He then kissed his sister upon her forehead and stepped back, letting this new little family enjoy their time together.

Dis opened the blanket and looked her new son over with an expression akin to awe. Ruili cupped his son's head in his hand and whispered his own blessings on his son. The pride in his voice was clearly heard. After a few moments of this, Dis cleared her throat and looked to her husband.

"Ruili, his name." He smiled at her as he took his son fully into his arms, he then looked at everyone in the room before he spoke again. "Let all here stand witness to his naming, for now on he shall be called Fili. Fili son of Ruili. Sister-son of Thorin of the line of Durin." Everyone of them spoke the child's name together in the traditional way of welcome, "Fili."

Thorin blinked away the moisture that had gathered in his eyes, he then looked at Kili and smiled at the awed but still worried expression he had. "Just remember that this time, the naming must be held before more than just immediate family. Since your babe will be the first born in Erebor since we've reclaimed it. Not to mention the first royal birth as well, this will be a rather extensive ceremony."

Kili shifted at that, "I am more worried about Ochre and the babe. She's been through so much, I am hoping they are both healthy. It just seems like it's been forever since they went in there, I hope everything is fine in there." Thorin waved a hand in the air, "these things take time. Not to mention this is the first time Oin has had the chance to examine her. With Ochre as far along as she is, he has to be thurough."

His nephew nodded his head in understanding before he began to wander around again. Thorin could tell that he was completely stressed and he tried to think of something else to distract him. "Have you thought of any names for this child?" Kili froze at that as he stared back at Thorin, his face a mixture of emotions.

Before Kili could respond to Thorin's question the door to the bedroom opened and out came Oin and Dis. Ochre followed soon after, her face a deep red. Kili bolted upright and practiacally ran to her side, she looked up at him before reaching out to wrap her arms about his waist. He did the same as he looked over at Oin, "how is she? And the...babe?"

"She is quite healthy, a little malnourished from her imprisionment, but hale and whole. The child grows strong, rather large too if my judgement is correct. Although I might be mistaken, but that isn't of any importance right now. The child is healthy, that is what matters." Oin looked a little troubled as he spoke and Kili narrowed his eyes.

"So they are both fine?" Oin nodded his head, "Aye. I will have to examine her once more in a day or two, but everything is progressing as it should. It will be soon though, within a week or two at most. Be prepared for that and do not let her over extend herself."

Oin then excused himself and left. Kili kissed Ochre's forehead, "do you feel up to seeing your uncles? Fili and Falin?" Ochre smiled at that, "I'd love to see them all. I've missed my uncles and I know they've missed me." Kili laughed at that before he turned to look at Thorin, his uncle just nodded his head, already certain of what he was going to be asked.

"I will return shortly." He moved from the room at a quick pace, this left only Dis with them and Kili looked at his mother with a new appreciation. She seemed to sence this too and raised an eyebrow in silent questioning, "yes Kili? What is it?"

Kili shifted before he spoke, "I just...thank you Amad, for the pains you went through bringing myself and Fili into this world. I don't think I truely ever understood until now," he slid his hand down to rest on Ochre's belly.

Dis approached with a soft look in her eyes, she reached out and kissed her son's forehead. "I thank Mahal for that same thing every day. Although, sometimes you both are more trouble than your worth." She then turned and kissed Ochre's forehead as well, "I am honored to be here for my first gandchild and I hope I can give you whatever kind of support you need."

Ochre smiled and hugged Dis as tightly as she could considering, "I will need all the help you can give me. I am very nervous but also excited. It's such a strange combination." Dis laughed at that, "yes it is. It only get's more so the closer you are to birthing."

Kili tilted his head as he asked, "how will we know she is ready? Uncle said that your water broke first, will the same thing happen with Ochre?" Dis and Ochre stared at him with surprised looks and Kili just shrugged his shoulders, "I am not going to be left out of this, I want to know everything I can to help." Ochre understood from those words alone as she smiled at him and ran her knuckles across his cheek, she then looked to Dis.

The woman sighed before she shook her head, "alright then. First it will be the pains, they will start low in your back just above your tailbone. The pain won't be very strong at first and then you'll feel a sudden pressure almost like you have to relieve yourself but different. That pressure will then increase until you feel a pop and your waters will flow. If there is blood in them let Oin know immediately it could mean bad complications."

Seeing Kili's face go pale Dis just snorted, "you did ask for this. Having a babe is not pretty nor is it very clean, there will be smells and liquids that make it rather potent. There is also no guarentee that it will be an easy birth, nothing is guarenteed. This is all part of bringing new life into this world."

Ochre nodded her head as she took this in, "thank you Dis for telling us this. I value your advice and knowledge, thank you again." Dis patted her shoulder as she looked about the home, humming a tune to herself. Seeing this Kili pipped up, "Amad I was thinking about adding a room for the child, Thorin said the others would want to help and I wanted to know if you did too."

A surprised look crossed Dis's face as she looked at her son in shock, clearly having not expected such a request. "I...I would be honored to help in such an endevor, I'm surprised you want my help. This is usually a man's job, we woman-folk just sit back and wait. I am proud of you my son, for changing that." She then reached out to embrace her son and Ochre felt tears fill her eyes as smiled at them both.
