Chapter 3

There were no objects to hide under in the fenced off area, and it looked as if the creatures have made sure that the humans could always be visible. The …vampires. Bella took the time to analyze the people around her in the electric fence. There were at least ten people that she could see, and they looked as tired and starved as she felt. Tangled hair and torn clothing were all that the people seemed to have in common, as the hair colours, body shapes, ages, and skin tones all varied. Every person kept a large gap between each other and eyed one another suspiciously.

Bella spotted another young girl looking at her with deep blue eyes and matted black hair before taking a step towards her. The young girl's eyes widened, and she crawled away. It was then Bella noticed that her foot had been torn off, with the skin jagged and uneven. She gasped and covered her mouth while trying to hold back the vomit she could feel in the back of her throat. Her stomach rolled as she considered what could have happened to the young girl for her to lose her foot. She walked over to the edge of the fence away from everyone else and sat with her knees pulled up to her chest; keeping her eye on the other people as the others seemed to be doing.

As the sun went down, Bella could hear a commotion in the middle of the camp. She could see a fire lit in the middle with many vampires standing around it and the blur of shadows running over to the group by the fire. She could see the light reflected against the vampires bodies and there was a sweet smell lingering in the air. There were at least twenty vampires coming into the camp that Bella could see, but she was only relying on what she could see from the glare of the fire. There were other vampires going back and forth to the fire while throwing chunks of something on the fire. The smoke that would erupt after each chunk was added was beautiful and the sweet smell would intensify.

She could feel her eyelids growing heavy with each passing blink while she observed the goings on in the camp. Eventually Bella's eyes shut and she drifted off into a fitful sleep where she could not escape the nightmare.

She finally woke up in the morning to a loud squeak and a high pitch scream. Bella's head snapped up to witness the footless girl from the night before being held by a male vampire. She could see the muscles in his bare arms tense as he squeezed her tightly and his head snapped up before sinking his teeth into the side of her face. She screamed again while he released her cheek; only to grab her head between his hands almost lovingly before twisting her neck violently. Bella turned her face away from the scene before noticing more of them just outside the fence watching the male vampire drink his fill.

They were beautiful; Bella could not deny that they were beautiful even if they were evil. There were three of them; two men and one woman. The woman was in charge from their body language. She was stationed in the middle of the group while they discussed the event they were observing. She was wearing all white and her black hair flowed down her back. The man to her right looked the most human with his silver blond hair and his dark black eyes. He was handsome but his features made him look distant and brooding.

Bella's eyes scanned the last man multiple times before she was able to breathe again. His honey coloured blonde hair fell almost to his shoulders and his red eyes looked intense and intelligent. She couldn't stop herself from letting out a little sigh as her eyes traveled down over his broad shoulders. He was wearing traveling clothes; the type that she often saw men wear when they would be traveling long distances either walking or riding horseback. There was a thump and Bella's concentration broke when she saw the male vampire drop the girl and look around at the other humans inside the fence. He scanned but was called back by the silvered haired man. She looked over at the people again only to discover that the honey haired man was looking at her with his bright red eyes. Eyes that were coloured from human blood. She felt goosebumps on her arms and the hair raise on the back of her neck before she quickly looked away.

Hoping that she would be ignored, as that was the best way to survive, she kept her head down and prayed to whatever god she thought would hear her in her time of need. When she looked back up, the honey haired man was still staring at her but he was there alone. The gaze was intense, and Bella could feel the heat from his gaze on her skin. They made eye contact and for a few seconds she forgot where she was and the horrors she had witnessed in the past few weeks.

He took a step towards the fence but cocked his head to the side as if he was listening to something. Bella could hear the slight noises of an argument somewhere in the camp and watched as the man took off in a blur of motion. She had forgotten he was one of those... things but shook her head and looked around the fence. The girl's body was still in the middle of the area and the other people were pretending none of it had happened. Bella felt the tears collect in her eyes and trail down her cheeks as she realized that she could not help the young girl, as that will be her own fate soon. The girl was laying on her chest with her face turned towards Bella. The expression was haunting as her glazed eyes seemed to be fixed on Bella in a look of sadness.

The sun in the sky was bright and the vampires seemed to be calmed at the moment. There were only a few left in the camp now and they were crouched down; seemingly speaking to each other but there was no way Bella could read their lips or catch any words as their lips moved at quick speeds. She needed to move from being cramped in one position for such a long period of time and needed to find some kind of food. The vampires would sometimes throw scraps into the camp to keep the girls alive in the crate.

She could see the crate on the other side of the camp with the door closed tightly. There was a small female vampire standing at the door almost like a guard dog. The crate was large and made of metal sheets that were bent together oddly. It was almost as if someone had formed them together with their hands. The edges look like they were clamped together as a child would squish together edges of clay. By the side of the building lay several young girls who had not made it to the electric fence as Bella had but were killed and discarded right outside the crate. The male crate could be seen close to the female crate. It was built the same way but there was a larger pile of bodies thrown carelessly along the side of the crate. There was so much destruction and disregard for human life happening around her.

Bella stood up and began to walk closer to the middle of the enclosed area. She wanted to ignore the body still laying on the ground but could not help glancing at her as she passed. There was a small clear tub with what looked like garbage leftovers stuffed in it. She quickly grabbed a bruised and squishy apple from the side of the pile and walked to the other side of the fence as far away from where the camp was. She had to find some way to get out of the fence and into the trees that she could see in the distance. Maybe if she could make it there; she could get away from the camp and find help.

There were no weak pointed in the fence that she could see, and the trees were a long distance to run for a human when she has seen how quickly the vampires can move around. She felt the hopelessness sweep through her body as she knew she was here until she was either killed or taken out of the fence. The downside was that if they take her from the fence there would be no opportunity to escape and Bella had no idea where she would end up if she wasn't killed here. She scanned the fence again only to notice that the honey haired man was back again. He appeared to be scanning as well but his eyes finally landed on her and stayed there. They locked eyes and his intense gaze once again made her body feel hot and tingling. Bella could almost feel the deliberation in his eyes, but he shook his head and walked away. She felt a chill go through her body and shivered before she quickly ate her apple and curled her body up to continue her observations.

…oOo…

Bella woke that night to a odd sound close by. There was shuffling and a strange grunting sound. It was dark when Bella opened her eyes, but she could see the dark shapes of a man pinning a young girl to the ground with thrusting madly. She could see the girl struggling slightly and the shine of tears falling to the ground, but she was not making any noises besides slight whimpering sounds. Bella scrambled to her feet and ran towards the man before shoving him as hard as she could. The young girl crawled away before getting to her feet and running to the other side of the area.

Bella looked around the camp and could see the other people watching with curiosity, but she sneered in disgust when none had taken the time to help the young girl being assaulted. She was caught off guard when the rapist regained his footing and had now set his sight on her. She stepped backwards before spinning and running; knowing that he was going to give chase. She knew this was going to be the first of many horrors that would happen to her before she was grimly killed but she did not expect to be raped. She expected her blood to be taken, but not her innocence.

Her heart was pounding as she ran but she felt clammy arms grasp her waist and throw her to the ground. The wind was knocked from her lungs and before she could get any air the mans body slammed into her. He grabbed her wrists tightly and stuck them over her head with one hand while the other grabbed the edge of her pants. He could not move them downwards because of the tight belt she had to wear to keep the pants from falling down. For once, she thanked that she had rode Gus with Thomas, as horse riding often ensured she wore pants instead of a skirt.

Bella kicked at him when he tried to undo the metal of the belt but she did not manage to hit him. He chuckled lowly and his breath fanned over her face; making her gag. Self preservation kicked in and she screamed as loudly as she could. The man seemed not to expect it as he loosened his grip on her wrists as he clumsily slammed his hand onto her mouth. He released his grip on her mouth long enough to draw his hand back and smack her loudly across the face.

Bella felt stunned as the man loosened her belt and began to pull down her pants. She felt the air hit her panties as he got her pants to her thighs and when she tried to kick out at him again, she realized that he had pulled her pants down to her knees and had his knee on the cloth between her knees. He ran his fingers up her thighs. She could feel the sweat and heat coming from his body and it felt disgusting. His touch was sending revolting chills through her body and she was slowly coming to terms with the fact that she was going to be raped here. The only benefit she could think of was that she knew it would only be a short time before she was murdered and would not have to live with what had happened to her.

Suddenly, the weight of the man was gone from her body and in its place was a cold breeze. She quickly gripped the edge of her pants and pulled them up before looking to see what happened to the man. It must have been one of the people finally developing a moral conscious but instead the rapist was struggling under the grip on his throat from the honey haired man. He was glaring menacingly at the man and there was a deep rumbling sound coming from his chest. He squeezed the man's throat until his face turned blue before drawing him close and latching onto his neck with his teeth. The honey haired man took long pulls of the man's blood before dropping him lazily on the ground.

Bella looked at him and could not stamp the feeling of fear and amazement that he had saved her from being raped. His eyes were still intense as they were from behind the fence, but she could also see compassion that she had not seen earlier. He was more handsome as he got closer, but she could also see scars running across his face and arms that looked like teeth marks. She looked at him with curiosity and apprehension. He looked at Bella before taking a step towards her quickly, but she flinched and cowered away. When she didn't hear anything; she looked to see that he was crouched a few feet away from her with his hand extended calmly.

He cleared his throat quietly and spoke gently, "are you alright?"
