...

"I suggest stepping back" Stein warned as he held Marie and their child in his arms at a safe distance.

Stein had watched as Maka's soul rippled in a dangerous manner. His warning was mainly for Kaori, Kid, and Spirit who were right next to Maka. Maka's parents were quick to take a step back, but Kid was not. Instead of taking a step back he had turned to look at the eccentric scientist. "Step back!" Stein repeated. It was too late though. Maka's soul had already began to exhibit spikes. Kid's attention was brought back to Maka abruptly. As her convulsions overtook her body the needles that came out of her body and pierced his flesh in several places. His blood trickled from the empty holes as he jumped back from the danger. The room was silent as each person watched the sight before them.

"Is she going to be okay?" Kid asked as the spines retreated once again into Maka's body with only the holes in her clothing being left of them. Stein set his hand on Kid's shoulder and nodded.

"Lord Death. Right now, her fate is tied to her will. We will need to be here for her." The dark undertone to Stein's voice was enough convey how the situation could go either way and that it was all up to Maka. The edge of Maka's bed was now occupied by Spirit as he threw his sobbing form down on it. Just from watching Maka's shaking, urchin like form was enough to tell him what had been happening. He once had suffered from such an issue. Many of his childhood friends had died young because of the rejection process. He feared that his daughter would waste away and perish like they had. This shouldn't have been possible based on what he knew. A person was either one or the other.

With Maka once again calm, Kid turned from her resting form and focused on the other important situation at hand. Soul was receiving punches that slammed him into the wall. He had tried to run away as Maka's episode distracted everyone in the room. "Soul 'Eater' Evans. What defense do you have for yourself?" He approached the white-haired weapon knowing that no defense he had would make his actions valid.

Soul shouts, "This is bull shit!" Maka's mother clenched her fists tight at his ridiculous words. "I haven't done anything wrong." He denied the truth once again.

Liz took long strides towards him. "Why you!" She growled as she stood behind Patty. Soul took this as his chance. With his arm transformed into a blade her swiped at Patty. Her stomach had been slashed open. The cut went from once side of her stomach to the other but wasn't as deep as it could have been. "Patty!" Liz shouted as her twin doubled over in pain. Patty clutched her stomach and was shoved, hard, by Soul. This cleared a path for his escape as Patty fell back into Liz and out of the way of the door.

Kaori immediately went after Soul. "Tch! You won't-" Was all they heard from Soul as he bolted out the door and down the hall.

"After him. Send him right to the dungeons." Kid shouted as he placed his hands over the portion of Patty's stomach, that Liz couldn't cover, to help stop the bleeding. Spirit started after the two. "Stein grab the doctors." Kid ordered. Stein did just that. He returned with the two doctors who immediately began to work on Patty. Liz was fuming. Not once had she thought Soul was capable of what he's done. He'd come to develop feelings for Soul but hid them away because she cherished her friendship with everyone more, but now she wanted to hunt him down and kill him. She went with Patty to the hospital with the approval of Kid and told him she'd call him when there was an update.

Kaori and Spirit had caught up to Sou who was huffing and puffing at the closed front gate of Kid's home. "Soul stop running right this instant! You're just making this worse for you!" Spirit shouted.

"If you do not surrender will be forced to use force." Kaori's cool voice dictated as she came to a controlled stop.

"I've done nothing wrong. Patty got in my way. She should have stayed out of my way." He was out of breath and yelling. He was scared beyond all belief.

"You have until the count of five child. If by then you don't surrender, we will have no choice but to use force." Kaori warned Soul. Soul's nose scrunched up in frustration as he scoffed at her words. "One." She began counting. Soul began gauging how the run had affected the Meister and Weapon before him.

"Two." Kaori's tone grew harsher as she continued to count.

"Just let me go while everyone calms down. It's not like I actually hurt any-" The sound of an ambulance heading in their direction stopped his words. "Wait but I hadn't cut her that deep… She should be fine…" He mumbled.

"Three." Kaori raised her arm in the direction of Spirit who took her hand in his and transformed. Soul's eyes grew large. The chance of him being able to take on the duo before him was near impossible with him being alone.

"Four." The ambulance was right there. The siren distracted Kaori for just a split second. Soul bolted for the entrance where the ambulance was going to enter and ran for his life. "Five. I guess you want to play hard to get." She bolted after him with Spirit in her hands. Down the hill they traveled and through traffic. The chase led them to a part of town with alleyways that didn't always lead anywhere. Had Soul been paying attention instead of looking behind him as he turned a corner, he'd have known exactly which alleyway he'd turned down, he would have seen the 50 step stairs leading to the basketball court. Kaori rounded the corner to find him already laying at the bottom of the stairs. There was a puddle of blood forming on the pavement from the impact of his head on the concrete. His legs were in unnatural positions and his right arm had his bone sticking out from it breaking when he tried to catch himself. "Such a foolish boy like you. Causing so much trouble." Kaori released Spirit so he could detransform. "Give me your shirt." She said as she held her hand out already. If it had been up to her, she'd have left him to bleed out, but Spirit had already informed her of Death the Kid's orders.

"Yes dear." Spirit took his shirt off and watched as the love of his life applied pressure to Soul's bleeding wound.

"Call the medics." Kaori instructed. Spirit complied and the medics were called. Soul was bound to the gurney with the help of a witch under Death the Kid's employ that they'd called for after calling for the ambulance. The doctors who'd be interacting with him knew he was dangerous and was to remain detained. He was also going to always have a skilled Meister and Death Scythe with him as he was to not be left unsupervised. Spirit had messaged Kid as soon as the ambulance loaded Soul up and brought Kaori and himself along the way.

The blood coating Kid's hands fueled the pure, unadulterated rage that was bubbling up in the deepest pits of his stomach. He kept his hands firmly pressed to her abdomen until the doctors were brought in by Stein. The medics stuffed the wound and covered it to stifle the bleeding on the way to the hospital. Kid watched as his sister was rolled out of the room on a gurney and Liz followed close behind. As soon as the door shut he went back to Maka's side. He needed some sort of comfort. He wanted her to wake up and tell him that everything was going to be okay with her and Patty. Spotting the blood drying on his hands he stopped himself from grasping her hand. He left Marie in the room to watch over Maka while he cleaned himself up. Every second he had the blood on him he felt his anger increase. He wanted to hunt Soul down at this moment and feed him his own arms and legs.

Just down the hall was his private bathroom. There he stepped in the shower and used his elbow to pull the handle to turn the shower on. He turned the water to the hottest setting, and he let the hot water cleanse his skin. Once the water cleaned all the blood off his hands, he practically ripped the soiled clothing off and tossed the wet clothes into the wastebasket. He pumped some lavender bodywash onto a washcloth that sat on the shower caddy and scrubbed his already pink skin, from the scalding water, until the flesh was practically raw. Once he felt a semblance of cleanliness, he closed his eyes and let the water hit his face.

The image of Maka's bruised neck was tattooed on the inside of his eyelids and he couldn't wipe it from his mind. It had burned itself into his memories and would most likely never leave him. He couldn't stop himself from punching the wall of the shower and cracking the singular square tile.

'Why can't I protect those closest to me?' Kid mused to himself as he mulled over all those he could not protect. His father, many students and citizens of Death City, and Maka and Patty. Many students and citizens had died during the battle with Asura. To defeat Asura, his brother, he had to unlock the full capabilities of his abilities which ended his father's life in the end. Under his nose, Soul had been hurting Maka without him even realizing it. He'd attacked Patty in front of everyone in the room. A room that had a newborn was where he attacked one of his own friends.

The water was running cold when Kid got out of the shower and dried himself off. He dressed with a spare button up and black jeans that he kept under the sink in a stack at the center of the neat rows of toiletries. His bathroom cabinet had been stocked so that the underneath was had mirrored rows of each product. He quickly dressed and got back to Maka and Marie.

Marie had been sitting on the edge of Maka's bed as she rocked her child to sleep. "How is she?" Kid asked from the door. Marie smiled sadly at him.

"She hasn't stirred yet. There's no sign that she'll wake up yet." Marie scooted over and patted the spot next to her and told him to sit down. She had seen him when he'd reached for Maka's hand earlier. She's also noticed how close the two had grown since the battle.

"… Thank you." Kid sat down and brushed a stray strand of Maka's hair out of her face. Her face was unnaturally pale, and she was sweating. Kid wondered if the room was too hot for Maka. Silence had settled between Marie until Kids pocket mirror chimed.

Spirit: Soul has been caught. We've had him taken to the hospital because there was an accident.

Kid: Accident? Is anyone injured?

Spirit: Just Soul. He fell down some stairs.

Kid: Keep me updated on the situation.

"Soul's in custody. He's receiving treatment at the hospital now." Kid returned his mirror to his pocket and finally grabbed Maka's hand. Her flesh was clammy but he didn't mind. The look to Marie's face was one of pure concern.

"So, what's going to happen from here?" Marie asked tenderly. She knew that Soul was also a friend of Kid's and knew that this was a hard blow for the young man. She'd be there to help him if he needed her.

"On the topic of Soul, I'll wait for the hospital to clear him and gather everyone and figure out what we'll do with him." Kid's grip tightened but when he realized it had he relaxed the hand holding Maka's. "As for with Maka, we will just wait and help her through whatever is going on." He felt pressure on his hand and saw that Maka's hand had grasped his with the little bit of strength it could muster. He smiled softly at her unconscious form and hoped she'd soon wake.

Psilocybin's spell was a success. She could feel the tether of the spell right to her core. But the tether was weaker than she expected it to be. With a shake of her head, she sat in her hide out and projected herself into Maka's mind. She found the tether's chain and followed the glowing manifestation of her spell. She found the tether was firmly connected to a person all right but it wasn't her intended target. The spell had gone straight through the astral form of Maka and was lodged into Asura.

"Oh my!" Psilocybin gasped at the sight of the personification of insanity. 'Wow this works out better for me than the original plan would have.' Psilocybin laughed to herself as she examined the wound of the temporarily frozen male. Testing the sturdiness for the spell by plucking the chain she waltzed over to where Maka was frozen, held the chain firmly, and shoved her. The chain ripped through her side from the force, and she was no longer frozen.

Maka screamed in pain as she grabbed her torn open side. She saw Asura, the chain imbedded in him, and the witch. "Who are you?" Maka growled as she sat herself up.

"Oh dear Maka. Now's not the time for you to know." Psilocybin laughed and knelt before Maka. She tapped her on the cheek rather hard. "But don't worry. Soon you will know, and it'll be too late." She placed her hand over the wound. "I'll take care of this for now. Don't want you dying before I can use you." Psilocybin grabbed her face with one hand. "Now go!" She shoved her back and as Maka made contact with the dark ground. Her fall didn't stop there though. Her whole body fell into the dark abyss of the ground and she found herself waking with a gasp for air.
