Chapter 2
Jack returned to base with Teal'c after the accident. He changed back into his green battle dress uniform and walked to Sam's office first thing. He found her running test on yet another alien artifact. "Carter!" he spoke.
She looked up from her work, "Sir."
"You will never guess what happened to me and Teal'c this morning." he started.
Amused she asked, "What?"
"This teenage girl rear ended me while I was sitting at a stop light. Guess what cop shows up?" he huffed.
She tried to not laugh, "Who?"
"Your brother and his little kid partner." he stated.
She grinned, "Did Mark give you a ticket?"
"No, he didn't give me a ticket. I was sitting still. His partner gave the other driver a ticket." he huffed.
She confessed, "I would have given you a ticket."
He came closer and challenged, "You would give me a ticket if you were a cop?"
She confessed teasing, "And handcuffed you."
He rolled his eyes annoyed.
Sam grinned excited, "You meet his new partner?"
He nodded, "Jackie! She looks about twelve." he reported.
"I know. He told me." she laughed. "He called me that day she was assigned to him. He said she's my age. I think he really likes her."
He paused and asked, "That kid is your age?"
She nodded and informed, "She worked for the F.B.I. before coming here. I guess she's a single mom and her son goes to school with Cassie and Jon. His name is Danny."
"Frasier knows her?" he asked.
She shook her head, "Jon called me and told me about his new friend, Danny Garrett. Said his mom is a cop and just moved here. I put two and two together."
"Well, she took one look at Teal'c and recognized that symbol thing on his forehead. She knew it was for Apophis." he told her.
"Jon said that Danny's mom is into Ancient Alien theory and stuff like that." she replied. She figured, "I bet she and Daniel would get along really well."
"Is mini-me calling you a lot?" he wondered squinting.
She blushed, "He just wants to talk."
He pressed, "About what?"
"School, stuff like that." she replied. "You going to Mark's big barbeque?"
"I suppose." he agreed. "I told him I will make sure Jacob gets there." He then wondered, "Who else did he invite?"
"Janet and Cassie, me, you Teal'c, Daniel, General Hammond." she informed.
"Daniel is coming?" he asked surprised.
"I doubt it." she confessed. "He said he had work to do."
Jack nodded, "I can see Daniel working instead."
Sam teased, "I'll have to tell Mark to make sure he gives you a ticket next time."
Jack slyly replied, "And handcuff me."
A voice came from behind, "I can handcuff you, sir. Put you in restraints too." Janet Frasier walked into the lab, "Ready for lunch, Sam."
She nodded, "Just a minute." She then stated, "The Colonel had a fender bender and Mark showed up. I told him if it was me that I would ticket him."
Janet teased Jack, "If I was cop I would tazer him."
"She rear ended me." he rebutted. "I did nothing wrong. I did not get a ticket."
Sam stated, "The Colonel met Mark's new partner today. Danny's mom."
Janet looked to Jack, "You met his new partner?"
He nodded, "She's about as tall as you and looks like a little kid."
Janet wondered, "How does she deal with drunk drivers?" She looked to Sam.
"I don't know." She shrugged. "One reason I decided to not become a cop was the drunks and drug addicts. I don't think I could deal with it."
Janet pondered, "I could deal with them." She puckered in thought, "I would have made a good cop." she nodded to herself.
Sam kidded, "Can you see us as partners?"
"Cagney! Lacey! Lunch!" Jack motioned.
Janet smirked, "We would have made an awesome cop team. I could tazer the Colonel, you could handcuff him and then we could strip search him."
"That's a scary thought." Jack told them and then left the lab before the pair got any more fantasies to his detriment.
Meanwhile
Mark and Jackie were back on patrol. Lunch time was soon upon them and they decided to take a break at a local diner. They sat down at a booth nursing cups of coffee while waiting for their meals.
Mark asked, "How is Danny adjusting to being in a new city and school?"
She gave a nod, "Good! He already made two friends: Jon and Cassie. Both are military families and have single parents. Jon is coming over tonight for pizza and a movie. The boys are having a sleep over. Cassie wants to come but I'm not sure if she wants to sleep over or not. I think it's because she would be the only girl and all."
"Jon and Cassie?" he cocked his head to the side in thought. "Cassie Frasier?"
She grinned, "You know her? Sweet girl. Danny likes her. She said her mom is a doctor."
"Her mom is Janet Frasier and she's Sam's best friend. She works in the mountain too." he reported. "Janet is a blast. You two are about the same size. She's this little red head who can really boss the Colonel around."
"Really!" she asked amused. "I was hoping to meet Cassie's mom and Jon's dad soon." She then puckered in through and squinted, "Jon last name is O'Neill and he come to think of it, he looks a lot like that Colonel that I met today."
Mark was told a cover story for Jon's existence. He smirked, "If it's the Jon O'Neill that I think it is, then he's the Colonel's son who he just found out about." Sam told her brother that Jack's young clone was a son that he never knew about until recently and the boy had come to live with him. He had no idea of Jon's true identity or origin.
Jackie paused in thought for a moment, "You mean Jon is illegitimate?"
"I don't know what happened to his mother or who she was. Sam told me the Colonel recently found he had a surviving son. His first son died in an accident. He got a hold of the Colonel's firearm. Sam told me the story. He got divorced when his wife left him. I guess he was recruited for some suicide mission. You know…good ole Uncle Sam. Nothing like sending a grieving father with a massive guilt complex out on a suicide mission. Guess their way of saving tax payer dollars." he shook his head.
"I take it he survived the suicide mission." she gulped.
Mark confirmed, "I guess so. He's still with us."
"I hope he got counseling. That's awful what the government did to him." she agreed.
The waitress soon brought the plates off food and quickly refilled the coffee before going on to the next table.
The officers dug in. Mark noticed Jackie became rather quiet and a bit distant. "Cat got your tongue?" he asked.
"I'm just thinking. That's got to be hard for the Colonel. Losing a son and then having another son just dropped on you like that." she confessed. "I wouldn't want to do that to Danny's father."
It was the first time since they met that she mentioned the boy's father. He pressed, "Tell me about Danny's dad. Does he ever see him?"
"He doesn't even know about him." she confessed shaking her head. "It was that summer, in camp when I was undercover. He was a councilor and very good one at that. He's a brilliant man. He was going for two doctorates and I figured if he knew I was pregnant that would prevent him from getting those degrees. He traveled a lot. He lost his parents when he was a kid. His grandfather was no real help. He was really into his work. I think he is a work-a-holic. So," she shrugged, "I never told him. I figured it would be better for me to raise him alone then traveling all over the world trying to find the guy."
Mark asked, "What happens to Danny if something happens to you?"
"He goes to live with his grandparents back in New York. My dad just retried after 30 years as Sherriff." she reported.
Mark asked, "So no father is in the picture at all?"
"Nope." she agreed. Her mind went back to that summer in the camp. As she spoke her face lit up with fond memories. "Danny's dad was sweet and kind. He's brilliant."
Mark mentioned, "You said brilliant already."
"He was!" she had to agree. "He would never hurt anyone. Matter of fact he saved me from having to shoot a man."
Mark asked, "How did he do that?"
She recalled, "There was a van the councilors could drive into town and one day we had to take youngest camper, Gert to get a prescription refill for her epi-pen. She was allergic to bee stings. We used a pen, she needed another at the local drug store. I went with them into town. We needed gas and stopped at a gas station. I went inside with Gert to get some ice cream as he pumped the gas. Then this guy walks into the station with a shotgun, pumps a round into he ceiling and starts to rob the place. I got Gert on the ground and I'm now going for cover and drew my snubby. I get lined up and I'm about to smoke this dude. He's got the barrel of the gun right under the clerk's chin and he's got that look in his eyes of someone out for blood. Then Danny's father walks through the door to see what was going on. He's right into my line of fire." she complained. "I can't shoot! He then proceeds to talk the guy down. The guy lowers the gun and surrenders and I re-holster my weapon before he can even see it. Gert saw it and I later had to show her my badge. He saved me from blowing my cover and saved that guy who robbing the place."
Mark smirked, "And if he didn't do that you would have smoked that robber's ass."
"Damn right I wound have." she agreed. "But after that I decided I should go for crises training so I could be a negotiator. I did too. About five years later I found myself talking down a man who was holding his family at gunpoint, threatening to kill them all and was having a mental break down."
Mark asked, "And you credit Danny's father for that?"
"I do," she nodded. "He showed me how to do it. It's like a domino affect. He showed me and then I used those very techniques later in a hostage situation. He inadvertently saved an entire family even if he doesn't know it."
He pressed, "You still in love with this guy?"
She paused for a moment, "I suppose I am. He was one of those people you only meet once in a lifetime. We were just two passing ships in the night…" she tailed off in thought, "Boy what a night…"
He grinned amused, "What happened?"
She confessed, "It was the middle of summer, the days were hot so to cool off I decided to go skinny dipping in the lake in the middle of the night. He caught me."
"Ooh la, la…" Mark joked.
She agreed, "I got admit the sex was pretty good."
"Worth getting pregnant?" he asked.
"Danny is more than worth it." she told him. "The sex a close second."
He asked amused, "If he just showed at your door would you sleep with him again?"
She pondered, "I like to think that I have gained a little more self control but to be honest…There is just something magnetic about him. I can't say I would not."
Mark laughed, "Guy's a real chick magnet, huh?"
She nodded, "Kind of."
He chuckled, "You get laid the night he caught you skinny dipping?"
"Actually no." she corrected. "I kissed him that night. Got laid closer to the end of the summer." She insisted, "He was a gentleman."
He countered, "But you just said he's a chick magnet."
"He's that too." she confirmed.
Mark offered, "I got a guy for ya. His name is Pete. You will like him. He's cop too."
She nixed the idea. "I come from a family of cops. I do not want to date or marry one. Forget it!"
He asked, "What kind of guy are you looking for then?"
"A brilliant man who is kind, caring and sophisticated…" she fantasized.
He balked, "The average chick fantasy. There is no such guy. It's like believing in Santa Clause."
She smirked back, "I'll take Santa Clause. I like chubby old jolly guys who bring me stuff."
He rolled his eyes, "Women."
