Summary/disclaimer: Time for another chapter of Snow-White Hearts. Enjoy the 2000-word chapter. I don't own RvB, Rooster Teeth does.
"Ow," Vermont stated pausing to hum and pull himself out of the warthog. "I feel like I got kicked by a train," Vermont added as he sighed.
He shook his head as he paused to look at Carolina. There was some truth in his words, she believed. Vermont wasn't someone who lied often as it wasn't part of the job when it came to it. She knew that there was plenty of work to be done and with another soldier when it came down to it.
"If it was that easy?" Carolina questioned to which Vermont hummed as he shook his head. "I'd have kicked you myself. Church, how far off track are we?" Carolina questioned as he paused to look around with interest.
He was curious as to what was going on at this moment. There was plenty of work to be done. Vermont brought his hand to the wound on his stomach.
"How's the wound?" Carolina questioned as she shook his head. "That wound wasn't a bullet, it didn't go as deep as it could have been," Carolina stated to which Vermont was silent.
He crossed his arms, looking at the teal-colored soldier with who he often talked constantly. He said nothing for a few moments as he seemed to be waiting for her to speak before he responded to her.
"Do you have a plan?" Carolina heard as she turned to Vermont. "You always have a plan, unless we're competing with each other. It's what you're good at. It's why we had plans set up in advance." Vermont added before turning to walk away from Carolina.
"Verm," Carolina stated as he walked away, holding his wound as he did so. "Verm," Carolina said as he turned, leaning on a stone.
"Is he normally this much of a snarky a-hole…?" Carolina heard to which she shook her head. "Then what's his deal? I thought a few seconds ago you were mad at him." Church stated as he crossed his arms.
"Vermont uses humor as a coping mechanism," Carolina said as she sighed. "You have files from Project Freelancer, don't you? You know him the way I do." Carolina stated, rubbing at her temples as she did so.
Church turned several different colors, focusing on what he knew. He knew what was going on, both freelancers were used to the other, they had chinks in the other's armor, and Vermont didn't like that Carolina had a way to get under his skin.
"Was he someone who talked to you a lot?" Church questioned to which Carolina shook her head. "Then what do you expect? You and he haven't talked in years. You don't know what the hell he's gone through. I doubt Vermont knows anything that the news didn't tell him. I don't know him as you do, tell me about him." Church stated as Carolina sighed.
"Because it's not that simple," Carolina said, looking at the steadily falling snow. "Roland isn't the most social freelancer. He just wanted to get the mission done, just like how I did. Only difference? He didn't want to focus on the leaderboard as I did." Carolina did to which Church was quiet.
"So, you bonded over the fact he DIDN'T care how about the scoreboard?" Church asked as he shook his head. "You do know PLENTY of people didn't give a damn about that… Right? There were at least 50 agents. I think you and Tex were the only people who cared about the title." Church put in before he looked at Vermont.
The agent was busy talking to his AI. He could feel part of himself within the AI, there was more of him out there, not just the memories he contained. It also sounded more like both were talking about someone off-planet when it came down. He cleared his throat and started
"Yeah, I know," Carolina stated as she crossed her arms. "He used to be like you, you know. Vermont used to be pretty sarcastic and ready to shoot someone. He wasn't exactly the quiet type, he just had someone to talk to back then. He was damn good at blowing things up, though." Carolina added, brushing the snow off her armor.
"Then why the hell he was a sniper?" Church questioned before Carolina turned to him. "Shut up, I'm a computer program. Not a super soldier like you. It's a damn question, just like how you know the guy who's been on plenty of missions like this. Vermont isn't the type of guy to shoot you from long range, it's not what the files I have said." Church stated as Carolina nodded, looking at Vermont who finished talking.
"Vermont isn't a sniper. That's not at all what he should be called." Carolina stated while she rolled her eyes. "A sniper is silent, constantly moving after every shot," Carolina added to herself while she cleared her throat.
"And? He's very good at shooting people from what the files say." Church stated while Carolina smirked under her armor.
Church, who was in control of her armor, noted this as he wanted to tell his friend and ally to stop with a curse. He glared at her. She knew that he was awaiting her one response when it came down to it as she considered her options on this.
"Jealous?" Carolina joked while she raised an eyebrow and started to shake her head.
"F*** you, C." Church stated while he cleared his throat. "And fine, what is he?" Church asked while he crossed his arms and started to think on said idea.
"He's a marksman," Carolina stated and turned to her friend as she did so. "A scout. He's good at killing, not sharpshooting in general. That would be North. He's also not the best at sharpshooting without cover considering you saw what happens if he tries to take the enemy head-on." Carolina added before she uncrossed her arms.
Church looked at Vermont who seemed rather concerned with his own business. He could hear the AI talking to its owner who seemed rather scared of the details which were at stake. He didn't want to say anything considering both he and his friend were constantly worrying about what their next move was. he didn't entirely know what the next move to make was. There were a lot more mercenaries for him to fight. She wanted to deal with Charon before she started to do anything else when it came down to it.
If they weren't dealt with properly? They'd be able to regroup and cause another attack which would probably cripple Chorus's defenses which she was still researching to see if it damaged the rest of the galaxy… And how these plans affected the rest of the galaxy.
Still? She was not going to lay down and die before this was done and dusted. She had turned her back on the rest of the galaxy for the sake of her ego before… And she didn't feel like doing it again.
She looked at Vermont who seemed rather serene and at peace with all the violence that seemed to be trapping the galaxy around them. It helped that both of them were not privy to what this mission seemed to be.
Vermont seemed to look around before he cleared his throat and started to speak once more. He crossed his arms across his chest and seemed to be more at ease compared to before.
"So, you done with the talking to the AI thing?" Vermont asked while he raised an eyebrow under his helmet. "Because if I'm not wrong? We got a small army of mercs who want to kill us all and I kinda don't want to get shot." Vermont stated while he crossed his arms.
"We still need to deal with the soldiers who are hunting us," Carolina stated as she shook her head. "We need to deal with the soldiers who are hunting us done," Carolina added before she shook her head.
Vermont rested his rifle on his shoulder as he waited for the next battle. The next mission that came would probably be rather weird at the moment because he was well aware of how Carolina worked.
She was a capable soldier at the time they had met. The fact that she ripped through a half dozen mercs without breaking a sweat only showed she hadn't changed from it. Carolina was a warrior and a skilled one at that.
He sighed to himself more than he did towards her. Carolina was going to drag him into another mission and part of him wanted to be dragged into the water of that shark-filled ocean.
"What's the mission?" Carolina heard from Vermont as he slowly started to pace back and forth in the snow. "We go back? We deal with them as best as we can." Vermont added while he rolled his eyes under his helmet before he shook his head.
Then again? She was going to be rather interested in something that would drag her back into the deep end. She had already finished one war and the prospect of another bothered her more the idea started to come up. She wondered how Vermont was faring with all he had probably been through before she greeted him here.
"We need to fight them and make sure they're down and terminated," Carolina added to which her friend started to pace back and forth in pace.
"And?" Vermont asked with a raised eyebrow. "There are plenty of soldiers here and we've faced worse odds. It's going to take more than some guys in armor to take a Freelancer." Vermont stated while he sighed and leaned on the warthog behind him.
She said nothing as he seemed to turn to his AI who had been rather silent except for one small nod which seemed to almost be announced at this change of plans at the end of the day. Both were rather thrown off by this but it didn't seem to surprise them.
Were they simply used to this? It didn't surprise him given the fact that they were out of their depth so far. They had more on their plates than someone gave them credit for. Considering what had been said and done since then? It had become a lot odder when it came down to it. She had a lot more to handle than simple soldiers and it had become odder than simply dealing with some soldiers at the second. Honestly? It became a lot harder when it came down to it.
She hummed to herself before she seemed to tilt her head to the side. She was brought back to when she was an agent and she had to glance around once more. This plan was going to be hinging on her skills at the moment.
There was so much to see and do. A lot more that she had to handle that hadn't been dealt with. This was going to end badly sooner or later. It would be over too soon when it came down to it. There was a lot more hope that this would end the way it needed to.
She glanced over her shoulder and around the snowy plains they had sat upon. There would be more enemies at the second, there were hostiles as of the second. It had been curious as of the second. The fact there was more on the plate than her?
This was honestly a lot more terrifying than she expected to
