"You HARLRT!"
"You dare to..."
"I dare to? You're the one fucking my guard!"
"You've brought it upon yourself. All you do is push and push and expect me to de the dutiful wife in return."
"I push? And what exactly is it that I push upon you? You do nothing here. You sit in my tower and you read my books while I work. You contribute nothing to the uphold of the law, or the order of the guard, or the keep of the castle. If I hadn't just seen it with my own eyes I would wonder what it was that you do all day."
"And I would ask you the same husband if you were ever by my side."
"I'm sure the concept must be hard for you to grasp, but I ACTUALLY SPEND MY TIME WORKING INSTEAD OF BEDDING THE GUARD!"
"Yes, and I'm sure you would rather work instead of bedding your wife. A concept that appears to be very hard for you to grasp."
"At least I have the decency not to go seeking around having sex in our marriage bed."
"Well one of us might as well be having sex in it. I can't even remember the last time that you did."
"Perhaps I might come to you if you weren't so damned frigid."
"Perhaps I wouldn't be so 'damned frigid' if you would ever spend more than a second in my presence before sulking off to your office."
"If I actually wanted to spend time with you then I wouldn't even need an office."
"And I wouldn't need to 'fuck your guard.'"
"And so you repay all these years of my love and my kindness with betrayal?"
"What is this love and kindness that you speak of?"
"I have been nothing but good to you..."
"You don't know what good is. And you surely don't know what love is. You are never here. You never speak to me anymore, you don't spend time with me, you never encourage any of my ideas, and when I'm upset and all I want is for someone to hold me you never did! You won't even look at me when I come in the room. You won't smile at me when I tell you good morning. You won't answer to me when I ask you for love, you won't even hold my hand when I reach it to you. You have done nothing. All you've done is try to buy me off with cheap trinkets from the travels that you refuse to take me on. No More!"
"Athena..." I could only look at the floor as her words lay heavy in my heart.
"I will be your wife no longer. Don't bother with your papers. I want nothing of your money or your property, only to be free of you."
She turned swiftly and was down the corridor before a second could past, no doubt with Felix waiting for at the castle gates. I closed he door that she had left ajar, and leaned on it against my forearms. And for the first time in centuries, I cried.
