CHAPTER 20 "The end of the beginning"
Jame was proud, she was safe now. She had figured it out all by herself. He stared at her from a distance in the great hall. This would be the last time he saw her before summer. This was his goodbye, he could not be friends with her anymore.
Meredith was happy, this whole mess was done. She still didn't feel completely like herself, and she knew she would never be the same again. She was finally going home, nothing would make her feel like herself again like home.
Remus was calm. No more attacks or disappearances. All thanks to Lily who had run up to him a few days before letting him know of her suspicions. She was a bright witch to say the truth. He was glad too, as he was finishing his first year and his deepest fear had not come true. His secret was still safe.
Mary was relieved. She had lost sleep many nights because of this. She had been one of the few lucky muggle-borns who was not kidnapped. She had frighteningly waited for her turn. She was now at ease.
Peter was eager, he was finally going home where he is the safest with his mother. This year had been a great, one where he made more friends than he could have dreamed of. It had also been a scary year with all insecurities and the unknown. But that was over now.
Phyllida really enjoyed the great hall's ceiling. Today it was sunny with a few small clouds that slowly flew by. She was going to miss this more than anything, she looked at the eagle that could be seen way up high, as she scooped a bit of mashed potatoes.
Sirius was angry, he didn't want to go home. He knew what was waiting for him. His family had been humiliated the day their firstborn was sorted into a rival house. He didn't know what to expect this summer but he knew he wouldn't enjoy it.
Lily was pleased, she finally could feel safe, the culprit had been stopped. Dumbledore was the nicest man she had ever dealt with, he calmly listened to all her suspicions and actually acted on them. Professor Walker was no were to be seen, there were whispers about her being in Azkaban.
The whole thing had started a few days before when Lily was on her way to class. She crossed Professor Walker talking to Yaxley and Malfoy and got the strangest feeling. She was completely convinced when she walked by the two boys and heard them whispering about a meeting. Professor Walker was guilty. Why? She didn't know, at that point, everyone thought she was a muggle-born. But it was her, it had to be. She had suddenly wished for Potter's invisibility cloak; she needed to follow these two to find the meeting place. The problem was they weren't on speaking terms.
"Lupin!" Lily squealed. "Lupin! I need your help."
"What is it, Evans?" he asked, seeing her anxiety.
"Professor Walker, it's her. I'm 100% sure of it," she swallowed. "I need you to follow Yaxley and Malfoy."
"What are you talking about?"
"Professor Walker is teaching the dark arts!"
"The irony in that is laughable," Sirius had appeared.
"It's true! They are going to have their last meeting, I need you to find out when and where!" Remus and Sirius exchanged worried glances. "We have to stop this! Please take it seriously."
"Well, I'd rather be wrong than regret not doing anything," Sirius said as stretched his arms. "Besides, we don't have anything else to do."
"Let's go get James," Remus said.
It was only the day before the meeting that they found out when and where it would take place. The boys had listened in to a conversation of an invitation. Lily was the first person they told and she did the mature thing and took all this information to the headmaster himself. He was perfectly willing to listen and immediately sent an owl to change the meeting he had the next day. Lily would have liked to have been there when they were caught. But obviously Dumbledore wouldn't allow it, she didn't even bother to ask.
Professor Walker was sent away immediately, they never saw her again. Everyone who had been present at the meeting were sent home. They couldn't be blamed much since it was a teacher that had permitted all of it.
Dumbledore gave a heart-filling speech goodbye and spoke about equality between wizards and encouraged everyone to discern between good and evil. Lily thought it was wonderful but knew that only a few would listen. She was ready to go home. Really ready.
Severus was disappointed. He had never expected a follower of the dark lord to fail, but she had. Lily was so happy to see that he hadn't been at the meeting. This, in her eyes, was the final proof that he had nothing to do with all of the matter. He hadn't gone, it's true, but he had wanted to. He would have liked to listen to what the dark lord had to say. Severus had heard Lily mention to one of her friends that she had spoken to the headmaster about the meeting. That was when he decided he could wait on the dark lord. He hadn't bothered to let his fellow classmates know, it was already too late.
Summer was finally here. The end of their first year.
Epilogue
There was a loud blast. Green sparks were everywhere. Six black hooded strangers flooded the room. Under the hoods, all you could see were white masks with the darkest of expressions. Most of the muggles had been killed instantly in the explosion, those who survived were yelling in agony. This made it easier for the death-eaters to find and finish them off. The last muggle breath brought silence to the room, a beautiful man dressed in expensive black dress robes entered. He was beautiful, with his dark hair and perfect features, but his eyes showed something different. His blood-red eyes mirrored his soul. Empty-evil and powerful. He was laughing, the evil laugh bounced through the now empty halls. The death-eaters knelt at his feet.
"Well done," Lord Voldemort said. He looked around at what was left of the muggle hospital. He pointed his wand into the air and cast a green light.
