Chapter 9
Doctor Mizuno Saeko had been witness to many things. Some were harder than others. She had seen difficult births that traumatized both mother and child, horrible accidents in which many, or all, died from their injuries. She had seen both the best and the worst of humanity. Often, her job required keeping her eyes on the less noticeable damages. A small bruise caused by a fist, rather than a fatal stabbing.
Over the years she had felt the brunt of her job most in the occasional incident when she had to give children to local orphanages. Sure, there were several great ones, run by kind people with open hearts and willing ears, who would listen to the children and help them recover. Other times she knew the place the child was going wasn't great but had no say in where they took them.
It wasn't as though she didn't have her own tragedies. Her own husband had walked out the door one morning during an argument and had never returned. He had been gone such a long time, and without taking so much as a toothbrush or a change of clothes. The cops had told her long ago to give him up and move on, and she had by turning her attention to her work, and to her daughter, who needed her.
Only that March she had felt deep in her heart that something was missing. And she had learned her niece was another fighter alongside her baby girl. But she was not yet awakened; it was almost a burden too much to bear.
She could feel fear gripping her heart like a vice. Why her daughter? Why her niece? It just wasn't fair. Why should she have to carry on alone? She knew that somewhere, out there in the world, her soulmate was alive and well. She couldn't believe him dead in spite of what the private eyes had told her. No, he was alive. And not helping her deal with all of the worries life had thrown her way.
She could hear voices around her, but they were faint and echoing. Anxiety filled her being and she wanted to sob it wasn't fair.
Unknown place
"Tagashi-san, Tagashi-san..." a man with pale skin and ocean turquoise hair flinched in his slumber. Where was he? The voice echoed around him, pulling him closer to wakefulness.
Back at the Tsukino home
The whole world felt like it was closing in on Saeko. She wanted, no needed, her rock back. He was alive. She just knew it. She was trying to focus on her daughter but was struggling to keep her eyes from wandering. Her breaths came in shallow pants, hurting her chest with the pressure. Her heart pounded like a sledgehammer and Saeko felt shattered. She knew it was scaring her daughter, but she could not bring herself back to the present.
Ami almost screamed. Her mother had never had a panic attack this bad. She was holding tightly onto Zoisite as Usagi and Ikuko tried to bring her mother back to earth.
"Saeko, Saeko!" Ikuko was trying her hardest to bring the mother back to earth.
"I'm going to try something," Usagi whispered.
"Usako no!" Mamoru tried shouting, but she had already begun glowing before he'd finished his sentence, and she fell into slumber. Mamoru caught her. He could now only pray she came out of her slumber with her mind safe. "Please come back safe, Usako." They had not bonded yet, so she was risking a lot already. He just had to keep praying.
Usagi pov
Usagi wandered in the mists, though she was pulled in two different directions. She was unsure which one to choose and wished she had Mamo-chan with her.
"This way princess," a voice familiar, yet not, old, yet young called.
Usagi followed the path that the voice felt stronger on. "That's right, not the other path" The voice was urgent, yet encouraging. Usagi picked up her speed a little bit more. She now wanted to get far away from that path that first pulled her alongside this one.
"Where are you?" she called.
"Just a little bit further princess, and all will be revealed," the voice continued. Usagi ran the rest of the way; she was panting by the time she felt safe enough to stop. She looked up and saw a woman in a white fuku and black skirt with a large staff, or rod, that had a heart on top. The woman turned and smiled and opened her arms. Usagi now knew who this woman was, and she ran and wrapped her arms around the older woman.
"Pluto. Setsuna," she sobbed as the woman hugged her harder.
"I am alive. Right now we are in a future that is still young. My younger self is not yet awakened. Luna is still unsure herself. She has seen versions of me, but they have always been past and future which is why she said, I would be back in a few days. In truth, I haven't awakened yet. I am not much older than yourself, only seventeen to be exact," Sailor pluto said in a rush.
"Where do I find you?" she asked.
"My younger self gained her independence and inheritance early. She is in the Mugen district as are Haruka and Michiru. They already live together, but are unawakened," the guardian replied.
"You're not going to be alone Setsuna, and you will only come to the gate if something feels wrong," Usagi promised.
The Guardian smiled. "I know I won't be alone, Usa. You make sure of that along, with Haruki."
Usagi smiled. She would make good on her promise. "I came here to find Ami's father. Saeko needs him. My mother and the others are trying to calm her. My mother took it well. Saeko, however, isn't able to handle it alone."
"I can understand. They had to make a lot of difficult decisions when they were young regarding Ami and Michiru. I wiped their memories of course, but Michiru is Ami's sister in this time and if she didn't go to Tagashi's brother, even though he was not the most pleasant person, Ami would have died before her first birthday and Michiru would have been taken. I had to stop that."
"I understand, but why did Tagashi walk away from Ami and Saeko?" Usagi asked.
"He didn't. He was put to sleep until Ami awakened as Mercury. We can go wake him now." Sailor Pluto replied.
The two walked to the chamber where the man waved her rod around in a majestic pattern and the chamber opened. The man first gasped for air and then opened his eyes. As they adjusted to the surroundings, he saw two young women; one in a dress and the other in a sailor-like outfit. "Where's Saeko and Ami?" he rasped. His voice not being used took its impact.
In a wave of her rod, Tagashi went back down to earth. "Why didn't you tell him where Saeko and Ami were?" Usagi asked.
"There are some things that I cannot push, Usagi-chan. Tagashi must find Michiru first. Now, young lady, it is time for you to get home. Mamoru is going insane because you haven't woken yet," the guardian said.
Usagi nodded readily. She wanted to go home.
"I will see you soon Usagi."
Usagi woke up in Mamoru's arms, and he breathed a sigh of relief. "Usako, you were gone ages," he said worriedly.
"I'm sorry," she replied, hugging him tightly.
"You will not do that again unless it is an emergency, until we are bonded. Do I make myself clear?" his voice was stern yet loving.
"Crystal," she smiled with a blush staining her cheeks.
"Good," Mamoru replied, bending his head to give her a fierce kiss, full of the desperate love he felt for her.
