A Brighter Future Ahead
AN: I know this one took a while, but I had some trouble figuring out how I wanted to do it. And I was also mainly focusing on Dragons Change for these past two weeks, too. Anyways, enough of that, lets just jump in...
Disclaimer: I do not own Wings of Fire. My OC Copperhead belongs to me.
Anaconda:
The Queen pinched her snout with a claw and shut her eyes against the oncoming headache. One of her Spymasters had just informed her that her son had been spotted flying over the Bay of a Thousand Scales. "This is going to be one of those days…" she muttered to herself.
She had taken care of her Clearsight problem only to have another problem spring up in the form of Indigo. This was something she hadn't predicted to happen, and since Copper was already gone, she couldn't detain him or have Indigo killed to prevent their plan from working—if she even knew what their plan was.
Her plan to create a divide between Indigo and Fathom to keep the Seawing prince too occupied to investigate what was happening to Darkstalker had just gone up in smoke now that Copper was gone. She had counted on his crush with Indigo to do just that, so she hadn't assigned a spy to watch either of them, thinking Copper would remain loyal to his mother. But apparently, she had overestimated his loyalty, and now he and Indigo were plotting something.
Now she had to figure out some way to find out what they were planning, stop it, and prevent them from doing anything in the future. She had already sent a few more spies into the Sea Kingdom to do the first part and assigned another to watch Indigo from now on. Speaking of which…
She wondered how her ace was doing.
Darkstalker:
He was suspicious.
Indigo's sudden shift in her behavior didn't sit right with him for some reason. He was a bit paranoid she had some sort of ulterior motive behind playing nice, but he couldn't think of a reason for it. She also kept her thoughts carefully regulated around him, making him think she had something to hide. But again, he had no clue what she might be trying to achieve by being nice to him.
As far as he knew, she still didn't like him because he had absolutely no clue why that fact would suddenly change. And that sentiment was shared between them because he wasn't her biggest fan either. Really, the only reason he had accepted Indigo's offer of 'friendship' was because Clearsight had asked him to.
Speaking of which, they talked about what happened in the Mud Kingdom extensively. She was absolutely horrified, and after the 'I told you so's' were out of the way, she looked into the future upon his request and discovered not a single instance of it happening again. The amount of relief that flooded through his system upon hearing that was enough to make his legs wobbly, forcing him to sit down for a while. Backing up her claim, the voices he had been hearing were gone, so it seemed everything was looking up.
Queen Anaconda had kept them updated on the political backlash from the destruction of the Mudwing army. The unexpected news had caused the entire war to stall. Nobody dared attack anybody anymore in fear of the same thing happening to them. Even the Seawings had pulled back into their own borders.
She also told them freely that she had taken advantage of what happened to strong-arm the Mudwing Queen into surrendering her throne. Another Queen had been chosen in her stead—by Anaconda, of course—and the Mud Kingdom was now officially a vassal to the Rainwing throne. Meaning, Anaconda was basically in indirect control of the Mudwing throne.
It made sense, and honestly, if he was King, he probably would have done the same thing. Clearsight hadn't seen any portents of doom because of this new development, so he supposed it would be fine in the long run. And as he thought to himself before, if Anaconda could unify Pyrrhia under a single ruler, wouldn't that be a good thing? It would mean less conflict in the future. And since the other Queens were too proud to simply surrender their power, conquest was the only real way to accomplish that goal—one that he supported.
He had once had the same ambitions, after all.
Back to the situation with Indigo, though, even he had to admit it was nice not having her at his throat constantly. Again, he was suspicious, but he could enjoy the momentary peace for now. The two Seawings had talked things out, and they were back together again.
And all of that lead to this moment. The four of them had been spending time together in the village or in his and Clearsight's cave, and Indigo had just put forth a rather interesting proposal. "You agree with me, right, Fathom?" she had asked.
The Seawing nodded. "I have to admit. She makes a good point. Everything seemed so much simpler when we were alone on the island. Maybe we should go back for a few days and just relax?"
Clearsight seemed to agree, and she looked over excitedly to see his reaction. He wasn't sure, though. Yes, it did sound nice and the Queen had given him some time for himself, but he wasn't sure about just leaving without telling anyone as had been a part of Indigo's suggestion. She claimed that getting away from the Rainwings would be a moot point if they knew where they were and could just come find them. Plus, she had argued that they probably had Rainwings watching them, anyways, so they would probably know where they were even if they didn't tell them.
It raised a few red flags, but he decided to ignore his paranoia. "Alright, fine…" he reluctantly agreed. "But only because Clearsight wants me to." Indigo just shrugged to show she didn't really care for his reason—only that he had agreed. He had been listening to both Clearsight and Fathom a lot more since that last incident, so if they thought this was the best course of action, maybe he should listen to them. Besides, he had already trusted Fathom with his life, so what was a short vacation on a deserted island?
AN: So we got a peak at what both Anaconda and Darkstalker have been up to, but we'll be going back to the Sea Kingdom in the next one.
Until Next Time
