Ever since I could remember, my mom was my hero. She was a single mother, gave me everything I wanted and always smiled. She wasn't a saint, back then I knew that. But I still loved her with all my heart. She hadn't done anything to change that... until...
Three years ago…
Highschool Cafeteria 1:03 pm
Tiffany, with her long golden hair flowing down her back and wearing her white cheerleading sweater with the red letters "GBH" stitched across the front, chomped on one of the strips of bacon that her mother had packed her for lunch. Her friends stared at her as she eyed the miniature toaster waffles in the plastic baggy. She pulled it out and chewed it slowly. Bringing maple syrup to school would be to messy and a hassle. Even so it didn't matter to Tiffany because the waffles were just as tasty dry as they were with syrup.
"So, Tiffany, once you finish your second breakfast, why don't we talk about prom? It's coming up." A dark-skinned girl offers.
Tiffany looked up at the mocha colored girl, her deep blue eyes meeting the dark brown eyes of her friend. She swallowed the waffles bits in her mouth and uncapped her thermos filled with orange juice.
"Oh right. Prom…" she muttered.
Tiffany looked at the table, twirling a lock of her long golden hair that flowed down her back. Her cheerleader friends all exchange mischievous glances. They knew she was struggling to ask out the new quarter back Quinn Napels, and they loved to remind her that the last three cheer captains had long lasting relationships with the quarterbacks from their reigns.
"I was thinking we could all go together. You know, as friends." She offered, her enthusiasm wavering.
"Or you could ask out Quinn." A red head offered.
Tiffany almost choked on her OJ when her friend offered that suggestion. She pounded her chest and coughed before she regained her composure.
"What do you mean, Sheryll?" She asked.
"C'mon Tiff, we know you like him. Just like we know that you don't want to go to prom without a date." The chocolate girl said.
"C-Chloe." Tiffany muttered.
Before they could continue:
"ARE YOU FUCKIN' DAMAGED?"
Everyone's head turned to the far end of the cafeteria. Standing there was a boy with short brown hair, coke bottle glasses, a plaid shirt and khaki pants. Standing in front of him was a girl with black hair and blue highlights. She had crimson eyes and a stern frown. The stern girl wore a purple dress with white frills and decorated with blue ribbons. A black hair band sat on her left wrist, which matched the color of her black high heels giving her an extra two inches.
She continued her verbal assault on the boy before he ran off crying. She flipped her hair and sat down across from a small girl who was immersed in a portable game console. Tiffany frowned as the poor boy ran away. The cafeteria began mumbling, all discussing the scene that had just transpired.
"Looks like the queen bitch strikes again." The chocolate girl, Chloe, chirped.
"Geez, what a cun—"
"SHERYLL!" Tiffany chided.
The red head snorted and folded her arms. "Well she is."
Lunch ended and as Tiffany left the cafeteria she bumped into a large toned man with curly blonde hair and an olive tone. After she bumped into him she tumbled back but he caught her, his grey eyes staring into her own blue ones.
"Hey are you okay?" He asked.
Tiffany opened her mouth to answer but shut it when she realized who it was. It was Quinn, the quarter back and her secret crush, that wasn't really a secret. A scarlet tint crossed her face. Quinn helped her back up and she looked to the floor. His face was so close to hers. She could smell the disgusting school pizza on his breath. It was cheese, her favorite.
"Hello? Tiffany? You alright?" Quinn asked.
The cheerleader straightened and clutched the hem of her skirt. She made sure the ruby kilt was tidy before she straightened her hair.
"Oh, I'm fine, I'm fine. I'm just a klutz." She replied.
Her friends walked by and her attention snapped to them. She had an exit.
"Sorry, but I need to catch up to my friends." She squeaked attempting to escape.
"Hey hold up!" Quinn called grabbing her sleeve.
Tiffany internally squealed. She could feel the warmth of his palm through the soft fabric of her sweater. He was touching her arm. She repeated that fact three times before it finally registered. She could die from bliss any moment. She found the strength to turn and face him.
"So, do you have a date for prom yet?" He asked.
Words failed her. Of all times for words to deny her their use, now was the worst time. Even so she shook her head. There was no way he was asking her… right? Either way she was overheating, so much so she thought a column of steam would rise out of her head.
"Well, would you like to, I dunno, go with me?" Quinn asked looking away.
Tiffany clutched her books to her chest. It took all of her will power to not yell in confirmation. She opened her mouth but still no sound came out. She shut it immediately after and nodded her head frantically. Quinn smiled.
"Great. Then can I get your cell?" He queried pulling out his phone and holding it towards her.
Tiffany nervously accepted his phone and entered her number. She handed it back. Quinn tapped the call button and Tiffanies phone went off, eliciting a smile from him. He gave her a wink and walked off to his next class. Tiffany swooned at the wink he gave her. Once recovering she was so happy she skipped to her next class. On the way she encountered her friends, all of them surrounding her.
"So, how'd it go?" Sheryl asked.
"Yeah, tell us what's shakin' bacon." Chloe urged.
Tiffany looked at Chloe with confusion.
"What's… what?" Tiffany asked.
"Shakin' bacon. You're new catchphrase." Chloe explained.
"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard." Tiffany rejected.
The day went on as usual, though Tiffany seemed more giddy than usual, writing "Misses Tiffany Napels-Maye" in her notebooks with hearts all around the name. Her daydreams consisted of prom, her future relationship with Quinn, their marriage and their children. Before she knew it, the day was over, and she was hopping off the school bus and running up to the front door of her house. She knocked on the door and it swung open.
Standing in the doorway was a young woman with a spray tan and dyed blonde hair. She wore a milky pink apron over her white t-shirt and blue jeans. A smile crossed her face when she saw her pride and joy smiling from ear to ear. Tiffany latched onto the woman in a tender and loving embrace. The woman hugged her back.
"Hey honey, how was school?"
"It was great mom~" Tiffany replied.
"Well come inside, you can tell me all about it~"
Tiffany happily pranced inside. She sat at the table as Jessie sat across from her daughter. Tiffany began to explain what happened after lunch and how the new quarterback had asked her to prom. As she gushed over being asked out by her crush Jessie could only smile. She placed her hand upon Tiffanies head, causing her daughter to halt her girlish squee fest.
"Tiffany, I'm so proud of you. When I was your age I was raising a beautiful two year old baby girl, and now she's made better decisions than I did at her age."
Tiffany offered a sympathetic smile as she clasped her mother's hand.
"Mom, you should be proud of yourself. I know it hasn't been easy being a single parent… but you've been the best mom in the whole world~" Tiffany replied.
Jessie hugged her daughter. She let go and pulled a cigarette and lighter from her jeans.
"Well I'm going to have a quick smoke and then I have a surprise for you~" Jessie giggled.
Tiffany nodded ad watched her mom leave the room.
For the next two weeks Jessie taught me how to dance, helped me fix my hair and make-up and even got her old prom dress hemmed and fitted for me. Then the night came, Quinn looked good in his suit and I was still getting ready. Then it happened.
Tiffany frantically put bobby pins in her hair. She'd spent the whole day at the salon and yet it still took all these pins to fix her hair this way. She heard a faint knocking on the front door from downstairs.
"He's here!" Jessie called.
"I'm touching up on my make up! Keep him entertained!" Tiffany yelled.
She heard her mother open the door. Tiffany looked at herself in the mirror and continued fixing her hair. She began applying her make-up. After half an hour of fixing her make-up she stepped out of the restroom and descended the stairs to see… no one.
The living room was empty. The befuddled cheer leader canted her head in confusion.
"Oh…"
Tiffany glanced back at the top of the stairs. That sounded like her mothers voice. She made her way up the carpeted steps and followed the sounds along the hallway to her mothers room. The door was cracked open. She could hear low voices. She peeked through the crack and found…
Jessie was having sex with my prom date.
