"Owlbear, I choose you!
On one of our more recent one off stories we were charged with the task of defeating a wizard apprentice who stole a wand of Polymorph by a polymorphed sheep. With our 'bleeting' hearts we naturally accepted the mission. Who knew what else that evil apprentice could do with such a wonderous/dangerous item. Our party consisted of a slime with a skill called 'predator', a human barbarian equipped with only a legendary shield, and a shifter ranger. Needless to say two of characters were "inspired" by popular anime.
Anyway during our travel to the wizard's tower we encountered a heavily injured owlbear and some wolves in the forest. The slime devoured the beast before it could mount a decent defense thus allowing it to polymorph into said beast thanks to its ability and the barbarian fed his shield bits of a wolf to unlock a new shield transformation.
We encounter a cave guarded by two bears and a pack of wolves. The slime transformed in its new form while the human changed his shield to its wolf variation, the shifter simply hung back with their long bow drawn and ready to provide long range assistance. The creatures were actually guards who were polymorphed by the apprentice and they were easily bribed to allow us passage. Hopefully they didn't scare the townsfolk as they returned to it looking for fun ways to spend 20 Gold pieces to pass the time.
Back to the story, the party over hears two voices bickering with one another on their current situation. They were sentient wolves were arguing about the way to save their pack as they beginning to get picked off one by one from the farmers. They somehow failed to notice the human, the shifter, and the slime. The player who was controlling the slime makes the joke "Owlbear, I choose you!" which gets a chuckle from all of us until the DM asks do you really want to do that. The players look at one another and share a stupid grin, it is officially 'go time'.
So the barbarian throws the slime at the unsuspecting monsters who polymorphs into its owlbear form in midair and slams into the two enemies. What we didn't know was that these particular wolves had fire and ice breath attacks but for that one moment we had a Poke'mon moment in DD.
