Ok i'm back! took way longer than expected but whatever.
Enough chitchat. Lets go!
Starflight left the cave and looked up at the rising sun, it's rays covering the darkness that enveloped them. It has only been a day since they escaped from their home, or prison, if you would call it that. The grass was soft under his talons, if he didn't know better, this would be the best life he could have.
Of course, there was the war.
The previous Sandwing queen died, killed by a scavanger, they said. So the three princesses, split up and made their internal squabble into a full out war.
He heard some movement and grumbling from behind him. It was his friends. The only dragons that he knew and trusted. They had grown up together, ate cows together, and trusted each other. He could remember the day, or night that he hatched out of his shell.
"It's getting away!" A voice shouted. The world was turning, rolling around like a rock down a hill. But this was no ordinary rock. It was an egg. With a dragonet that soon, soon would have the powers that were locked away for millennia.
The world was black, yet, somehow, the egg rolled in all the right directions. Towards the skylight, with the three moons shining above it. Yes. It was so close.
The egg rolled to a stop. The moons were right above it. Power surged through the dragonet's veins. The shell splintered open, like a egg cracking under a hammer.
The moons, silvery and full. Blessed the young nightwing with powers that many others wished they had.
Mind reading. Visions and seeing all possible futures.
All of their power was at his clawtips.
He looked back at the remaining eggs. They were still but ready to burst.
Suddendly, talons picked him up from the ground.
The dragon inspected him narrowed eyes, darting from his talons to his wings and his silver, teardrop scale right behind his eyes.
"Bit small, but overall fine." The dragon said, placing him down.
"What should we call it? A yellow dragon with scars on his wings asked. His body was war torn and seemed like it was a piece of paper in a damp cave.
The dragon stared at him.
"Starflight"
"Seems kinda puny." a blue dragon commented. What will Morrowseer think?
A giant black dragon with scars appeared in their minds, along with some fear and anger.
The cave started to go into focus. Torches illuminated parts of the cave. A large central cave was connected to four smaller caves. A small river ran by the main cave.
He turned and looked at the eggs. 4 eggs in a small nest. A mudwing, seawing, rainwing and a sandwing.
Starflight looked at each egg carefully. They were supposed to hatch tonight.
Each egg was colorful and shook with anticipation. Futures exploded in his mind. Each bloodier than the last. The war would take a toll on them, even after the war ended. One had them all alive and well but would die mind controlled. *hint hint wink wink*
He felt each egg with delicate little talons.
I promise our lives will be the best I can make them. He swore. None of us will dietragically.
He spun his head around. Skywings! Nearby! They were only still a day's flight from queen Scarlet's palace! Starflight clenched his teeth together.
Futures appeared in his mind. Most of them included him and his friends dying in some horrible way.
He snuck back into the cave and waited until they left.
A pair of talons landed at the mouth of the cave. Starflight inhaled sharply.
A ripping sound came from the mouth of the cave
"Hey c'mon!" A voice shouted, male and high pitched. "Its been 3 days and no dragonets! I'm getting hungry."
Another voice, male, growled, and ripped off a chunk of meat. "This is balls." He said, with meat in his mouth. "We have to look for 5 stupid dragonets while starving out here."
"Agreed." the first dragon said. "Queen Scarlet is starving us and making the worst of us fight a monster in her arena for her amusment."
Monster? What monster? And a monster so horrible that it can kill skywings?
The name shuddered through their minds. "Peril."
So it must be a dragon. Starflight thought. He searched the futures. Peril. A copper colored dragonet with flaming scales came to his mind.
Starflight paused. Krestel's daughter? He remembered, he saw, no, remembered seeing, that Krestel had two dragonets. But none said that one had fiery scales.
He stood there until wingbeats drifted off into the distance.
Starflight released the breath he had been holding. His friends were still mostly asleep. As the sun rose to it's zenith, they started to stir.
"Starflight." It was Clay. "Early riser?"
He shrugged. "You know I was always awake before everyone else was." He responded.
"Should we get moving?" Tsunami asked.
Starflight looked at the futures. "We could move now but it's safer at night."
"Should we move now?" Sunny asked.
"We could, but we would need to be careful." Starflight responded.
"I'll go out to hunt." Clay offered. "I'm a mudwing so they wouldn't suspect me."
I paused but Clay was already was stretching his wings.
"Be careful Clay." Glory said.
"If I don't return by nightfall, you can search for me." Clay said.
His orange wings were shaking. Don't worry, you'll be back.
"If you find Queen Scarlet," Starflight started. "Run back here. It might seem counterproductive but Its the best outcome."
Clay seemed wary. "Are you sure? Won't that just get you caught?"
"It'll be fine."
Clay inhaled and exhaled, trying to calm himself down. "Alright."
"Good luck."
As Starflight saw his wings disappear into the distance, he started to have second thoughts. Whatif we do get caught? What if Queen scarlet finds us in this cave? What if we all die today?
"You must be worried." Tsunami put her webbed talons on his shoulder. "He'll be fine. He can take care of himself."
But can he really? Doubts were always dangerous for Starflight. It caused him to panic and not look at futures correctly.
"Tell me," Tsunami started. "I've never asked this before but..." she paused.
Starflight already knew what she was going to ask. She had dreams about it since she began to understand the war.
"Who are my parents?"
Blood flashed through his mind. The wringing of a neck, the cheers of skywings.
But it didn't happen. It won't happen. I'd never forgive myself if it did happen.
"Well, your father is trapped inside the skywing prison..." Tsunami flinched. "And your mother is the queen Coral."
Tsunami exhaled. Her fear evaporated. It confirmed what she thought.
"So I am the missing princess!" She shouted. Glory looked on with annoyance, Sunny with curiosity.
I winced. Now Tsunami would never shut up about it.
"Don't get your hopes up princess." Glory said. "We don't know if you'll even get to the sea kingdom alive." She glanced at Starflight.
He only shrugged. "Perhaps, these next two months are quite perilous for all of us."
Wingbeats came closer and closer. Starflight snapped his head towards the noise. He was back and safe with food.
"Clay!" Sunny shouted. "You're alright!"
Clay smiled. "And I brought back food!"
Starflight fiddled with his talons nervously. "And you're sure nobody saw you right?"
"I-" Clay was cut off by wingbeats. Starflight sighed.
Queen Scarlet had arrived.
