The EMTs left after making sure that Egon was at least stable enough to hold himself upright. Ray and him talked while you were still on the roof calming yourself down,
"I'm worried Ray…" Egon started.
"About what?" Ray asked.
"I...I feel strange everytime (y/n) initiates physical contact with me…" He paused.
"That's odd, I've never felt that way...and I've only shaken her hand once since we've met her, but I've never felt anything off." Ray admitted with a hint of curiosity.
"I mean I could just be over exaggerating, but that's out of character...especially for me, as well as I know myself anyway." Egon rubbed his tired eyes under his glasses with a sigh.
"Well…" Ray sat down on the couch next to him, "Maybe this is what love feels like for you buddy."
Egon's eyes widened under his hands, "Ray, I can't fall in love. My brain is too fixed on science, facts, and realities to be open to love, emotions, and feelings."
"I mean, I know that Eggy...but we know as holders of PhD's…" Ray was getting to a point when Egon interrupted him.
"12 for me, Ray...I have 12, remember that." Egon butted in.
Ray stared at his friend with a deadpan expression that wasn't serious as much as it was a 'really?' type of face. Egon sighed defeatedly and leaned back against the back of the couch looking up in the direction of the roof where you were still, mulling in your problems.
"Do you think I should give this love thing a shot, Ray?" Egon asked him closing his tired eyes under his glasses.
Ray looked as Egon and answered his question with a question, "Do you really want my honest answer, Eggy?"
Egon side-glanced down at Ray not sure of what he was expecting, Ray knew him better than anyone. They had been friends since middle school after all. Ray kept staring at him, hoping for some kind of affirmation from Egon. The light from the table side lamp illuminated them like an aura, an unsure yet comfortable aura, Egon nodded yes at Ray's silent patience.
"Well," Ray slid closer to Egon and pallsihly placed his arm around Egon's shoulder, "in my honest answer as your best friend...yes. I think you should, they do say some people fall in love in one day as crazy as it sounds...but maybe now that you feel this way take it slow with her, she seems to get along with you that way better than Janine did." Ray chuckled as he jokingly rubbed Egon's shoulder.
Egon curled forward and defeatedly rested his elbows on his knees and his face into his hands. He had his answer, he asked for it, there was no turning back from taking the advice of his best friend. He had his decision made for him now all he had to do was do it.
-Time Skip-
You had been on the roof for a while, a long while. You were cold, or at least as cold as you felt inside, the wind blowing across the rooftops of New York had been nothing compared to the cold pain your heart felt after hurting Egon to such a degree, or at least you thought you hurt him. 'How could a hug hurt someone so much?' your brain tried to wrap itself around this conundrum that was happening to you.
A knock at the open fire emergency door caught your attention, you turned with a jump. It was Egon standing there in his grey sweater vest and red tie.
"How are you doing?" He asked lowly.
"I'm more worried about you...I've been up here after the EMT left." You sounded depressed.
"I'm ok...for now." He walked closer to you with his hands behind his back.
"You shouldn't come closer...I might hurt you again." You lowered your head and rubbed your arms.
"I'm not hurt, just weak." He admitted bravely as he leaned against the wall next to you.
"Yeah but if you get too weak you might start getting physically hurt, ya know bruises and all." You were now getting temperature cold not internally cold, and shivered.
He saw you shiver and pulled what he had behind his back out, it was his lab coat. He suddenly draped it over your shoulders. You looked at him shockedly.
"Thank you." You blushed a little, even though you were still feeling bad.
"I figured you'd be cold up here, especially considering how long you've been up here." He coughed nervously. (A/N: Ray talked him into bringing the coat but we'll give Egon the credit here ;) )
"It's not that bad now." You chuckled.
"So," He cleared his throat, "I've been thinking...I know this seems sudden and or confusing, especially for myself but...would you, um, like to accompany me to the Halloween Party this year?"
Your eyes widened in surprise, but then a cold gust of wind caused you to tear up and close them immediately. You opened them as soon as you were able to and quickly replied, "Sure, but what prompted this?"
"Well, I figured since you will be staying here and will be working here you're an honorary Ghostbuster employee you should attend, also I have my plus one ticket you can use since you're not counted by the city yet until we file all the paperwork and financial information." He paused waiting for some kind of reaction.
"I mean, yeah that makes sense...but why your's?" You asked him further.
"Well, as you know Ray finds a date usually before the party, Winston brings his wife, Peter brings Dana, and Janine babysits for them with our lawyer/accountant Louis. I have no one to use the ticket(s) on so you can use my plus one...that is if you want to go." He put his hands in his pants pockets and casually rocked on his heels against the wall.
You just stared at him against the black, starred, night sky and the lights of the city just illuminated his tired face in a way that made you stop questioning him and finally say, "Yes."
"Alright then, we'll need to come up with costumes then." He gave a small smile, even though that was so unlike him but he did anyway.
"Wait...you actually want to do a costume this time? Whatever happened to the "imperfect copies"?" You asked with a turn of your head like a curious puppy.
He shrugged casually in the cold, "Well since you are my date, I guess it wouldn't hurt to switch things up a bit."
You shrugged in agreement but then your eyes widened in shock when you processed what he said, "Wait a minute...DATE!?"
(A/N: Ray basically told him to do it this way...and Egon is basically acting so it's definitely going to seem out of character for him...no fear, I didn't forget how scientific minded he is)
"You are using my plus one...which makes you my date doesn't it?" He asked staring at you plainly.
"I mean...I...I guess...but…" You were shaking under his lab coat, unsure of what to do at this point, you had already said you'd go, it was too late to turn back.
"Then that settles it...we'll discuss the costumes tomorrow, now let's get out of this cold." He started walking towards the fire escape door holding his arm out as a guide.
You just wobbly-kneed made your way towards the door his arm was stretched out towards and he walked in behind you and shut it.
The golden eyes across the darkness lit up and the fanged smile with it…everything was going in the right direction.
