Chapter Seven

Wally's POV

Once upon a time, there was a very poor family. They lived in the most poverty-stricken part of the kingdom. There was a father who worked night and day and a mother who was always busy taking care of their son.

The son was very sickly. He had coughing fits several times each day and his mysterious sickness never got any better. For years, the boy had to live with his sickness and while trying to survive.

Eventually, his family ran out of money to help care for him and his sickness. Because of that, they had to let someone else care for the son. The boy drifted from home to home of relatives and complete strangers for years. They always let him go because his sickness cost too much to care for.

Luckily, the Lord of Petalburg, Norman, welcomed the boy into his home and family with open arms. Lord Norman was very good friends with the boy's father and thus, the boy finally found a perfect place to call his home. Because of his influences, the boy was able to enroll in the Royal Guard as a trainee despite his illness.

There, the boy was able to regain some of his strength back. His lungs got stronger and his coughing fits lessened each day. However, they still happened since the harsh training activated them.

While training, the boy was harassed by the other trainees for being allowed in just for being a foster son to the lord. However, the boy did make one friend. And possibly another.

"Lack. Are you sure this is a good idea?" I whispered to him.

"Honestly? No." he whispered back, giving a glance to the girl walking behind us. "Let's just hope everyone is at the training grounds. Even the newbies."

I nodded and looked back at the girl. Her name was Moon and as far as I know, she was the very first girl ever to enroll as a cadet at the Royal Guard. Lady Erika is the land's most skilled archer and even helped in battles, but she doesn't technically count as she is part of the Council and not the Guard.

Out of all of the cadets, I'm one of the oldest. The main reason is that I'm not the most physically gifted, but I'm managing. Lack was the first one to befriend me. He's six years younger than me, but we still remained friends.

Our first meeting was not very interesting. One day, he noticed that I was struggling with fighting a straw dummy and he decided to help me out. From that day on, we stuck with each other. Lack was one of the most promising of the cadets, so I always wonder why he stuck with me. Not that I'm complaining! Without him, I wouldn't have any friends in the program.

"So!" I nearly jumped when Moon behind us suddenly exclaimed out loud. "How long have the two of you been in the program? What can I expect from it?"

Lack-Tow and I exchanged a look before I finally spoke. "I've been here the longest for about three years? Lack-Two here just joined last year. But we're the same rank for cadets. Lack has been helping me ever since he joined."

"It's a lot of training we have to do. Not just skills, but physically too. Build up that muscle and endurance." Lack added.

"Don't underestimate me!" Moon huffed and crossed her arms. "I may be only 11, but I can hold my own!" she quickly muttered something else under her breath, but I couldn't hear.

"Did you say something?" I asked.

"No." she shook her head. "So, where are you two leading me?"

"The barracks. All cadets have the same uniform and even you have to wear it. If you have any belongings, have someone bring it tonight. You'll be living here from now on until you graduate." Lack-Two told her. After that, she stayed silent and followed us without another word.

I frowned. I know that Lack-Two had two different faces when it comes to girls, but even that tone he had was harsh. And he put it bluntly too. It's not like him.

"Hey, Lack?" I whispered to him.

"Yeah?" he looked at me.

"I think you put that too bluntly. You were too harsh on her. I think you should put things gently from now on. Seriously, you always act different depending on the girl." I explained.

"I guess." He shrugged. With that finished, we stopped once we were outside of the entrance to the barracks.

I cracked open one of the doors and took a peek. I couldn't see or hear anyone in there. I nodded to Lack, singling it's clear.

He nodded back and turned to Moon. "Okay, we're at the barracks. You're lucky the rest are already off training." He said. Moon silently nodded and followed us as we entered.

The large wooden double doors creaked open and let the dust fly under the sunlight outside. I had to cover my mouth to stop myself from coughing. This dust is the only bad part of being a cadet here. That and the teasing, of course.

We walked down the maze of hallways and upstairs until we came across one marked 357. I took out a key and unlocked the door. I opened it and walked in.

"This is our room. Lack and I share it." I explained as I gestured to one of the bunk beds in the room. It was small and occupied with two dressers, two bunk beds, and two tables; each side mirrored the other, although one side was completely messy. The other was clean and looked untouched. A sole window in the middle of anything let sunlight fill the room from the wall opposite the door.

I pointed to the clean side of the room. "That's the only free bunk bed right now. All the other rooms are filled." I explained.

"You should be lucky that you ended up with us. Most of the other boys are perverted and you'll be living a nightmare." Lack added.

"I get it." Moon sighed. "You said something about a uniform."

I walked over to the clean dust-free dresser and pulled out a pair of brown pants, a white shirt, and a black vest. I looked under the table and picked up a pair of black boots that ended up halfway to the shins. It was the same as what both Lack and I were wearing.

I walked over to Moon and handed the outfit to her. "Here. We have to wear this every day when we're training. There're more outfits of the same thing in your dresser. They should be your size." I explained.

"Okay." She nodded. She just looked at the two of us, eyes flying from Lack-Two to me and repeating. "Uh, can I get a minute to change? In private."

I felt my face flush as Lack said. "Fine, but you better get over it soon." Lack said as he pulled me out in the hallway, closing the door behind him.

Moon's POV

I sighed once the door closed shut. At least they were kind enough to leave me alone for a while.

I looked over to the messy bunk bed on the other side of the room. The top bed was littered with clothes, while the bottom looked freshly made and not even a speck of dust covered the sheets. I looked over to what is now my bed.

It would be better for me to take the bottom bunk considering how I'm the only one with that bunk right now. I placed the outfit Wally gave me and set them on the bed. I could feel some straw poking out from under the sheets. Well, I never thought it would be comfy.

I went over to the window and drew the curtains closed so I could change. I took off of the dress I wore and put on the new clothes. They were a bit baggy and big, but it will do. I rolled up my previous outfit and placed them in the bottom drawer of the dress along with the slippers I wore before.

I stuffed the bottom of the pants into the boots and opened up the curtains again. I picked up a strand of my hair and sighed. I can't really train with my hair flying around everywhere. There were some ribbons lying around. I braided my hair into two short braids on either side and tied them at the end. My bangs were too short to do anything, but they settled flaring out on either side. I stared at my reflection in the window and smiled. Now I look like I'm ready.

"I have to send a letter to Sun asking him to send me my stuff," I muttered to myself as I looked outside the window. I faced back towards the door and opened it up. Wally and Lack-Two were still there waiting for me. Wally was standing patiently while Lack-Two was sitting on the floor. They seemed to be in the middle of a conversation before I interrupted them.

"Oh, was I interrupting something?" I asked, closing the door behind me.

"No." Wally shook his head.

"Come on. We got to get you to the training hall." Lack-Two sighed as he stood up.

"Actually, is there a place where I can send a letter?" I asked.

The two looked at each other before Wally nodded. "There is the Pidgey Post. We send letters from there all the time."

"We'll show you the way before we head to the training hall." Lack-Two nodded. They led me out of the barracks. I had to shield my eyes when we walked out in the sunlight. I always hated the daytime. It's always too bright and I never was a morning riser. I'm more of a night Noctowl.

I realized that my vest was unbuttoned and I was buttoning it up when the two stopped walking. I ended up walking right into Wally's back.

"Ow!" I yelped as I backed up.

"You better start paying attention. Our captains won't be too happy if you slack off." Lack-Two huffed at me as he placed a steady hand on Wally's shoulder to keep him stable.

"Well, I'm sorry if I wanted to look presentable and not a slob." I glared at him. I caught Wally laugh silently and smirked.

"Hey! Don't you go encouraging her!" Lack-Two exclaimed at Wally. He then turned to me. "And has anyone taught you to respect your seniors?!"

"You sure don't act like one." I retort as I crossed my arms. It was that moment that Wally just exploded into laughter.

"Oh come on! You're the oldest one here! Don't encourage this disrespect!" Lack-Two exclaimed at his friend.

"I-I'm sorry!" Wally wiped a stray tear from his cheek. "I-It's just that…" he had to hold his stomach from all the laughing he's doing. "SHE'S COMPLETELY RIGHT!"

However, it wasn't long until Wally started to cough. Lack-Two was suddenly supporting him with an arm around his waist, trying to get him to straighten up. "Don't just stand there, help!" he exclaimed at me.

I snapped back to reality. "O-okay." I placed my arm on Wally's other side and placed his arm around my shoulder. With both of us, we lifted Wally up back to his feet. It didn't take him too long to stop coughing.

He hacked a few more times before it completely stopped. "I'm okay now." Wally sighed as he took his arms away from our shoulders. We let our arms drop from his waist as Wally was able to stand on his own again.

"Damn it, Wally, you nearly gave me a heart attack." Lack-Two sighed. "You have to watch yourself better than that. We don't have a healing pokémon with us this time."

"Sorry Lack." Wally smiled at him. "And I'm sorry too, Moon, for making you worry."

"Oh! It's fine! Really!" I tried to place a smile on my face. "I'm just glad that you're okay!" Seriously, I was. I thought he was going to pass out or something.

"Anyways." Lack-two sighed. "This is the Pidgey Post." He gestured to the wooden door we were standing next to. I apparently missed the entire part where we were walking up a set of stairs and arrived at the top of a tower. Was I really that distracted?

He opened the door and we all walked in. The room was fairly large and many bird pokémon were either on perches or flying freely around the room. A wire fence covered the open window that let in sunlight and fresh air.

"Does anyone even knock these days?" a woman with lavender hair descended down a set of spiral stairs that was circling up higher in the room. Her hair was tied in a low loose ponytail that ended all the way down to her ankles. Her hair matched her lavender eyes which sharp, but they were gentle and filled with passion.

She was wearing a light sky blue dress that dropped to her feet. The long sleeves were flared at the ends so they covered her hands a bit. A swirling white design marked the upper part of her chest with a silver belt separating the bottom and top. A green gem sat in her silver necklace as it sat on the white V-shaped collar of her top. White gloves covered only the back of her hand with a silver ring with a green gemstone on the middle finger of each hand holding it in place. A silver circlet, that looked like it was crafted out of delicate feathers, was wrapped around her forehead and the back of her head. Parts of her bangs covered some of the front.

"Please pardon us Lady Winona," Wally said, bowing slightly to her.

"Oh come now, Wally." She chuckled lightly. "I always welcome anyone who is willing to allow bird pokémon to fly as much as they want."

Wally blushed and straightened up.

"And who is this?" Winona turned her attention to me once she reached the bottom of the stairs. "A new cadet?"

Lack-Two elbowed me and I glared at him.

"Lack-Two," Winona said sternly. That made the boy jump.

"Sorry." He muttered.

"Now, speak child. Don't be afraid." She turned towards me. Her eyes were cold just a second ago when she scolded Lack-Two, but now they were soft and kind.

I finally found my voice, but it was quiet and echoed through the room, despite the constant chirping of the bird pokémon around the room. "My name is Moon Tsuki. I came here from Alola because my region is in trouble and I want to help it!" my voice unexpectedly grew louder. I didn't even notice. "Pirates have teamed up with the knights in my region and now everyone I care for is in trouble. I need the king's help so I can save my friends!"

I looked up and saw that Winona was looking at me in shock. I looked back and so was Lack-Two and Wally. I suddenly realized what I said and my face heated up. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-"

"No." Winona stopped me. I looked up and saw that she was smiling. "I see the passion you have for your dream and the love you have for your friends. But I must warn you, there is still a lot for this kingdom to overcome. A female cadet. That's a new milestone for this kingdom. However, just know that you have the support of all of your friends behind you to help push for your dream."

"Lady Erika has informed me that she was the one to enroll you as a cadet and I can see why. You have her support and now you have mines as well. I'm sure the boys behind you support you as well, am I right?" her eyes turned sharp as she looked past me and towards the two she mentioned.

"Yes, milady!" they gulped in unison.

I laughed silently.

Winona's eyes turned soft again as she looked at me. "Anyways, I'm sure that you originally came here to write a letter, correct?"

"Yes, Lady Winona." I nodded to her.

"Come with me then." She gestured for me to follow her. I walked with her over to a table with a stack of paper, quills, and ink bottles. "The biggest advantage of having an aviary in the same place as a mail post is the free quills you get every day." She joked as she gestured to the table. "Write your letter and then choose a bird pokémon to deliver it to whoever you want."

I nodded and grabbed a piece of paper. I took a quill that seemed like it was made from a Skarmory's feather and dipped the tip in one of the ink bottles.

Dear Sun,

I have been able to be admitted as a cadet of the Royal guard at the castle. However, I cannot come back to the inn anything soon. If possible, please send my belongings to the castle. Just send a note back with this pokémon and everything will be settled. I'm sorry that I can't see you soon, but I'm trying my best to get help for Alola. Hopefully, there will be a day where I can venture out in the kingdom. I even made some friends that I know you would like. I'll try to write to you as much as I can, but I will be busy. And promise me that you write me too okay? I don't you to be so busy working that you forget about me. I'm serious. I will send a bird pokémon after you if you do ignore me.

Until next time,

Moon

I finished up signing my signature and rolled it up. Winona offered me a ribbon to tie it and I took it. I tied it into a bow and smiled to myself in satisfaction.

"Now, what pokémon do you want to deliver it?" Winona gestured her hand to the entire room. We walked up the stairs as I looked around. There were much more bird pokémon then there was at first. The room was bigger than I thought as well as the stairs just kept on going up and up. Windows dot the wall every so often with the same wire fence covering them.

I stopped walking up the stairs when I spotted a certain pokémon. It was a very rare pokémon, even in Alola where it was supposed to be the only place it can be found. The small round pokémon was playing with a small leaf that was stuck in one of the windows. I leaned in closer to it. The pokémon noticed me and turned its head around to meet mines. It was odd to the see the head facing the complete opposite way of its body, but I knew that it was just one of the pokémon's traits.

"Ro?" the Rowlet tilted its head at me. "Le!" it cooed and jumped into my arms.

"Ah!" I yelped. The Rowlet was nuzzling against my cheek. To be honest, it was so soft. Its feathers were as soft as a flower's petal and Rowlet was softly chirping.

"Seems like Rowlet there likes you." Winona smiled. "Very rare. A pokémon like Rowlet often chooses who it trust. And it seems like that little chick picked you. He must sense something good in you."

"really?" I asked. I never knew that about Rowlet. But this one was so cute! He's adorable. Oh but wait, ROTOM!

"Heyzzz! What did I mizzzz?" the ghost himself came flying through the window closest to me. I completely forgot about him. I think he went and explored the castle while I was competing against Erika. What trouble did he get into?!

"Rotom! Where the hell were you?!" I scolded him.

"Sorry! But if you leave me alone, then you rizzzk me wandering off!" Rotom laughed. "Who'zz thizzz?" he looked at Rowlet.

The Rowlet didn't seem alarmed at all at Rotom presence and chirped happily at him.

"Nice to meet you too friendzzz!" Rotom buzzed happily.

"What an interesting pokémon," Winona noted. "I'm sure your time here will be interesting and never boring."

"It already was." I sighed.

"Anyways, let's deliver that letter now," Winona said. I followed her up to the top of the room. There was a door leading to a balcony outside. She opened the door and wind blew my hair back. A cold chill entered the room, but Winona just walked out like no problem. I followed her with Rowlet still in my arms, the letter clutched in my hand and Rotom floating behind me.

Winona instructed me to tied the letter to Rowlet's foot and have him perched on my arm.

"Since Rowlet likes you so much, what about I assign Rowlet as your pokémon whenever you want letters to be delivered or received?" Winona asked.

"Really?" I replied.

"Of course." She nodded. "Would you want a name for him?"

"A name?" I repeated.

"Give him a cool onezz!" Rotom buzzed. "Notzzz like minezzz!"

"Okay, um what about Robyn?" I said. Rowlet immediately chirped happily. "Then Robyn it is!"

Winona gave me two whistles, one for myself and the other to my friend, in case we ever need to call Robyn to us. I tied one along with the letter while I kept mines on a cord around my neck. I told Robyn to head for the inn near the harbor and to wait there until a letter comes back. He nodded and took off.

"You finally done up there?!" I heard Lack-Two yell from below. "We have to get moving!"

I looked over when Winona sighed. She pulled out a Skarmory's feather and threw below. I heard Lack-Two yelp. I looked down and saw the sharp feather between his legs, right near his crotch.

"I can wait." He squeaked.

Everyone but him just ended up laughing. I think I'm going to enjoy it here.

Crystal's POV

I sighed. This meeting much longer than Professor Elm told me. I'm stuck standing out here in the hallway with Sapphire. I sighed again as I looked up at the high and unnecessary decorated ceiling. Seriously, who needs a gold trimmed painted Swablu looking down at them all the time?

I looked over at Sapphire; she was laying on her stomach as she was scribbling on a piece of paper with a chunk of charcoal.

"What are you doing over there, Sapph?" I asked her, pushing back from the wall I was leaning on.

"Gold said he wanna put up drawings over the daycare for the baby pokémon there. Ya know, to make 'em feel at home." She explained, without looking up.

I was going to ask why he didn't ask Yellow for help, then I remembered that the drawings were for baby pokémon, not Burgh. "Well, he chose the right person for the job," I muttered as Sapphire continued.

Professor Elm apparently wanted me to come to wait for him for this meeting because there was something he wanted to talk to me about after what was supposed to be a very short meeting with the other Professors, but it's already been an hour.

"How much longer are they going to take in there?" I asked out loud, frustrated.

"Papa said that they're probably going to be in there for the rest of the night," Sapphire replied. "Done!"

"The rest of the night?!" I exclaimed. "But Elm never said anything about that!"

"Papa just said it," Sapphire explained as she stood up and dusted off her dress. "Everyone else complained."

Right. I forgot about her super hearing. "Okay, then what do you want to do? We have free time now."

"I actually haven't seen anyone else today. I wonder where they are." Sapphire said as she put away her drawing.

"You're right. We would've at least seen Green at least once today." I pondered. "Come on, let's see if we can find anyone."

Sapphire nodded and bounced alongside me as I walked through the castle. There were plenty of servants running around the castle, but none of our friends. I would expect Silver or White somewhere but no signs of hem.

"Let's check the training grounds. Lack-Two and Wally are sure to be there. Maybe Red and Green are too." Sapphire suggested.

I sighed. I always hate going to the training grounds. It's always filled with boys who never know personal space and lack personal hygiene. "I guess it's the only place left to look. I doubt X will be willing to have visitors now."

I followed Sapphire as she led the way towards the training grounds. The Royal Guard has been known as one of the elite armies across the country, maybe even the world. However, none of us have ever gotten a chance to explore the other regions ever since we all met each other. People are always trying to join the Royal Guard, but usually, it's only those who have a close bond with any of the lords or ladies in the council can join. It's very biased that way.

I shielded my eyes as we stepped outside in eh sunlight. Why does it have to be so bright? The castle was on top of a hill that overlooked the kingdom. I looked out towards the ocean and saw the sunlight reflecting off of the surface in glares. I had to squint and look away quickly to avoid being blinded.

"Come on Crys!" Sapphire snapped at me back to what we were doing. She was waving at me impatiently and I followed to where she was waiting near the entrance to the training grounds. "Geez, ya space out too much." She complained.

"Sapphire, you're just noticing this now?"

"Uh, yeah? Why?"

"Nevermind." I sighed. "Let's find the boys." I walked past her and took over the lead.

"Hey! Wait up!" the girl shouted behind me as she ran to catch up. We both stopped when we heard a loud yell coming from the training hall.

"What's going on in there?" I wondered out loud.

"I can't tell. Too much shouting." Sapphire whimpered as she covered her ears. Ah, super hearing. Both a blessing and a curse.

I flinched as the doors to the hall creaked on its hinges. "I think we should solve this before anyone gets really hurt."

"Isn't Green-senpai training the recruits today?" Sapphire asked.

Not it makes sense. Red would never cause this much of an uproar. Only Green can be this harsh. I marched toward the doors and using all of my strength, I threw the doors open.

"Yeah! Way to go Moon!" I snapped my head towards a greenet. No one would believe that he's actually 18. I turned my head to who he was shouting at.

It was a young girl, maybe 12 or 11, with black braided short hair and black eyes that was sparring up against a brunet. Lack-Two. They both looked exhausted and Lack was picking himself off the floor.

Green was overlooking the spar and it looked like he was surprised as well. Unfortunately, he didn't let it show. The girl was actually holding her own against Lack. Lack-Two of all people. He was the best cadet in the guard.

Hold up. Let's back up a bit. A girl was in the guard? An actual girl? Not a guy who thought that it was funny to make fun of girls? Seriously? And she was beating Lack?!

"Why does she get to join the guard?" Sapphire complained. "Papa never let me join!"

The girl straightened up and raised the wooden sword in her hand. Lack-Two was already back on his feet and started to charge at her. The girl quickly slashed up and blocked the hit, pushing back quickly after. Lack stumbled but caught his footing again. He pushed against his sword, but the girl released and side-stepped to the side, making Lack-Two fall forward. As he fell, the girl stabbed his back with the hilt of her sword. Lack-two landed unceremoniously on the ground and ate dirt.

I had to blink a few times to just get the scene to process in my mind. Sapphire was cringing from the loud increase of volume in the room. The boys were screaming louder, but with one hand raised from Green, the room became silent.

"Very good." He stated, eyes closed. "I believe that is all for today. Moon, you are done sparring for today. Lack-two, I would expect you to improve the next time we spar. Everyone is dismissed."

Sapphire and I pressed against the wall to avoid the herd of boys rushing out of the humid training hall. The only people left were Wally, Lack-Two, the girl, and Green.

"Heh. I was going easy on you. Since you're new and all." Lack-Two panted as the girl helped him up.

"And you're sure that was all. Not because I was a girl?" the girl asked.

"Ah."

"I wouldn't answer that question," Wally advised him.

"I know that!" Lack-Two exclaimed.

"Are you sure didn't have any prior training?" Green asked the girl.

"Back in Alola, I was only a healer. However, I was a field nurse, so I had to learn to defend myself sometimes." The girl answered.

Sapphire and I walked towards them. Wally was the first one to notice us. "Oh, hi there Crystal, Sapphire."

"Hmm?" Green looked at us. "I wouldn't think you two would be out here. Sapphire maybe, but Crystal, no."

I held in a retort and just glared at him. "Anyways, who is this girl?" I asked.

"I'm sorry!" the girl blushed. "I didn't introduce myself! My name is Moon Tsuki."

"Glad to meetcha! Imma Sapphire while this grumpy face here is Crystal!" Sapphire introduced us.

"Sapphire, that's your first impression?" I raised a brow.

"What? It gets the job done." She shrugged.

"So what are you guys doing here?" Green asked us.

"The professors are still in their meeting until night," I explained. "We were looking for you. Maybe we could head to the village."

"That reminds me," Lack-Two spoke up. "When are you going to take the cadets to the village? You did promise us trips out there on our own."

"I did not promise that. It was Red. Blame him. It's his problem, not mines." Green corrected.

"Come on senpai!" Sapphire exclaimed. "I'm sure you can work something out! You and Red are in charge of the cadets! Just give them some kind of excuse or something! Or better yet, make it some kind of reward!"

"Not a bad idea, Sapphire." I nodded. "Make it so cadets of certain ranks can get rights to go into the village for a certain amount of time."

"That would be nice." Wally nodded. "Some of us do get bored just hanging around the grounds and the forest. We do need to buy some personal stuff."

"Fine." Green sighed. "I'll think about it."

"Score!" Lack-Two exclaimed. "Now I might be able to take a good look around town then!"

"And I can visit my friend!" Moon smiled.

"Anyways, still want to come with us?" I asked green.

"Sorry, but I have more training to do with the cadets. I'll catch you two later." He waved us off.

"Fine then. Bye Green-senpai!" Sapphire waved to him as we exited the training hall.

"So what do you want to do now?" I asked her.

"I know! Let's go see what Scarlett is up to! I hope she's doing well." She exclaimed.

"I heard from yellow that she just got a new job," I explained. "It's somewhere on the docks. We can go there and see what she's up to."

"Then let's go!" Sapphire grabbed my wrist and started to run.

"Sapphire! Wait! I can't run that fast! Wah!"

And now it's a look inside the castle! I hope everyone liked it! I know not much happened, but it's refreshing! Everyone needs a break once in a while a slow-paced chapter may be what everyone needs!

Anyways, I hope you all liked and feel free to keep reviewing! I love to hear feedback and your thoughts! Hopefully, my next update won't take another year. I actually got more chapters written up already. Until next time!
