The stadium reaching deafening decibels, the animosity between the supporters was at its peak ahead of a fairly critical sixth round of Clam Blitz of which became an elimination game for the unfortunate Toka, who stared down a possible exit following their defeat in the fifth round of splat zones that came via knockout. The sidelines of the trailing team carried great levels of anxiety as they listened to the voice of the stadium with many of the players wanting to get back out there and defend their season. Despite how well they played all match, it still wasn't enough to get them over the hump of besting Hugh-Napri. Following the third round where Hugh-Napri appeared to be getting into their usual groove, the fourth round of turf war became a critical round for both teams to make their statements; Toka needed to save their season, and Hugh-Napri needed to stomp on their throats before they catch a second wind and come back much stronger after already showing hints of that possibility.
What followed was a vicious turf war that displayed the desperation of both teams, the aftermath highlighting clearly who were the winners from all the ink plastered on the once blank canvas, which was nothing but a bright red that looked to almost sparkle thanks to the sunlight infiltrating the stadium. The taiko drums banging shortly afterwards to the tune of the vocal supporters from the tiny island that were even overpowering them, in the eyes of the neutral viewers it felt like the moment was becoming the catalyst that would start the comeback for Toka, the intensity shown from the loyal supporters encompassing all the emotion that Toka would need to possess to accomplish the improbable task of victory against such an opponent. Their best performance of the day was already achieved in that round based on how they moved, their attitude towards the enemy's response, everything just flowed so naturally that it truly felt like they had their statement performance to show they were the better team all match and could now have it reflected in the score, now they just needed to replicate that formula and get key stops to prevent Hugh-Napri's counter. In an exchange that lived up to the name of a turf war, both teams played like the venue belonged to them and showed just how urgent it was for them to protect what was theirs. Hugh Napri would hit hard, but Toka would hit even harder. Whenever it seemed like Shiore and her squad were making progress towards building a solid lead and controlling the turf, in came Toka followed by a wave of red making everything difficult for them and creating a constant struggle to maintain the majority of the turf. The resolve of Toka getting tested as they spent the match even or climbing out from behind, they saw the light towards the end and made their surge-overtaking Hugh-Napri and squeaking by late to secure a match tying victory.
Then came the fifth round. The sidelines of the two teams polarized as they came out of the preceding break with Toka looking rejuvenated following their tie and Hugh-Napri showing some agitation in allowing the match to get even once again. What was considered by Shiore to have been a miracle that it'd still been even after all that subpar play by her standards, her expectations of them led to an attitude adjustment. Her daggerlike and emotionless stare, her crushing silence, all of it proved effective in evoking a serious response from her comrades during the break. The struggles of failing to flip the switch, failing to live up to their potential, Shiore saw to it that all those faults were to be resolved swiftly before it cost them a spot in the quarterfinals. In turn, splat zones became a statement for Hugh-Napri with critical substitutions getting utilized-specifically Shiori and Takahashi-as well as the remaining starters of the team.
A competitive start early on, it was Toka who took the lead to kick off the round and built a cozy lead in no time behind the same intensity that worked in the previous round. The work of Toka's deadly trio Shunpei, Kazuma, and Yuto meeting its match of Hugh-Napri's ace trio of Shiori, Shiore, and Takahashi, the powerhouses of both sides clashed in an epic showing. The retaliation of Hugh-Napri starting with a big counter and a wave of specials that were saved for the ultimate stacking, Toka's lead evaporated shortly after. What followed was a response by Hugh-Napri who inflicted a bonus and began their quest to a knockout, getting interrupted by Toka moments later and succumbing to a bonus penalty as well. A back and forth routine that developed between the two in pursuit of victory, it flirted to a knockout several times as both teams neared the promised land only to get denied at the last moment. When time neared its expiration however, both teams stepped it up with the threat of overtime looming. Toka were leading after having worked hard to retake possession of the zones in a heated battle on two fronts, and now were actively engaged in defending their fragile lead at a critical moment where both teams could see their path to victory teetering between narrowing and widening, fluctuating in accordance with the flow of the battle. A desperate and fast paced clash on the zones, two battles were waged on both fronts in a bitter dispute that ended up coming to the main zone where the concentration of bodies compiled. After working together to grab possession of the first zone and stop the growing lead of Toka, Hugh-Napri's strongest duo waged war on the final zone and took on the team as a whole while time ticked against them. A testament to just how close they were in skill and relation by blood, Shiore and Shiori tore through Toka's defenses as time expired and forced overtime just at the last moment! What followed was a frantic struggle on Toka's part as they desperately fought to get back possession to end the round before it was too late. But like a stain that wouldn't be erased by any means, Shiore and Shiori remained in the borders of the zone regardless of the force used against them and managed to make Shunpei and his squad play sloppily.
An overtime finish that captured the essence of the match as a whole, the teamwork of Shiore and Shiori proved to be the difference maker as the final moments of the match ended in a wild quadruple kill set up by Shiori and executed by Shiore. Not only changing the tide and erasing that pesky bonus penalty to make the comeback and eventually achieve victory, they sent a terrifying message to their opponents by reminding them just how far apart they were despite the rankings being so close. It had been the first time all match that Hugh-Napri looked themselves on the turf, and with that the narrative shifted as they once again retook the lead in the overall match. With both teams on edge entering the sixth round, it was a do or die moment that felt like a decisive round when considering what was at stake. Although Toka weren't the first team to fight without any fear towards Hugh-Napri, a feat that belonged to the 24th ranked Joyriders, they were indeed the first team to actually sway the opinion of the viewers and make them question if Hugh-Napri could win; that alone was enough reason for Toka to still feel confident and hopeful about their chances entering the round despite being in elimination territory-though they'd already had some close calls earlier in the match. Hugh-Napri were anxious but not out of fear of failure, but rather to test whether they were finally in their rhythm or if it was a fleeting moment. It was brief, but that match was the best those players had felt all tournament and that stemmed from them having to hold back for so long that they'd unconsciously limited themselves. Finally, those limiters were coming off and they had Toka to thank for it.
What followed would be the moment of truth.
With the best squads of both teams fielded , it was a matter of survival for one team and a matter of conquest for the other. A game of clam blitz with the highest of stakes on the line, both teams had already done their reflections on the journey, both teams had found their peace moving forward, the fear of failure nonexistent for either camp. From the very start, neither team held back. They charged at one another head first like a pair of dueling rams, showing no intention of slowing down and creating a compilation of flashy kills created from the brutal executions provided. Clams spilled before they could reach the goal only to get scooped up by the enemy, the score remained dormant until a crucial play by Takahashi opened the floodgates for scoring delivering a big breakthrough for Hugh-Napri. Toka had a response though, delivering their rebuttal the moment the goal closed and dishing out a bonus penalty. But just as swiftly as Toka had a response, so too did Hugh-Napri who delivered a bonus penalty to Toka as well, and what followed was a competitive trade off behind big plays. Back and forth and fast paced between the two teams committing to the round, their intentions were evident as the match approached its climax: Hugh-Napri wanted to end it now but Toka wanted to stay alive at all costs, confident they could take them down in the seventh round if they forced it. The big players all featured in the free for all, it all came to a head as the round approached expiration with both scores narrowly even with a bonus in effect. Once again Toka were the ones who had the lead, but like last time, weren't in the driver's seat. Hugh-Napri were surging one the comeback and eliminated their penalty and targeted their lead. When the overtime siren kicked in, everything was clear as day. The effort of Shunpei and his squad becoming vain, it was the emergence of that cursed duo once again that spelled doom for the tenth ranked team. Once again, Shiore and Shiori's chemistry proved to be too dynamic to be conquered.
An overtime victory that sealed the fate of Toka, the result became official and the party for the Hugh-Napri supporters started as they hopped about joyously. A heartbreaking end to what was supposed to be a promising season for the team who ranked as high as the tenth spot, it was a well fought battle that earned the respect of Shiore and the other starters who refrained from celebrating and instead showed their respect to the team who gave them the toughest match they'd ever faced since their defeat from last year at the hands of the Emperors. Not bad for a strong school from a tiny island. But where plenty of respect was deserved for Toka who dished out their best performance in losing fashion and showed Hugh-Napri and the whole world that they weren't afraid of taking on goliath as a fellow powerhouse, a revelation as revealed for the remaining teams in competition: Hugh-Napri weren't the flawless team that they advertised all tournament and although the faults revealed were minimal and were immediately dealt with, it was the precedence that mattered the most; it served as proof for all the other teams remaining that though it would be incredibly difficult and near improbable, it wasn't an impossible task. If the conditions were met, even Hugh-Napri could get exposed. That revelation reached by Shiore and the others, they finally woke up and understood they needed to show no mercy moving forward unlike ever before or else risk getting another close call.
