Him and Lily? What kind of prophecy could be about the two of them.
"Alright," he asked carefully "well, what did she say?"
Dumbledore took a deep breath in "as I said, I do not believe she knew what she was saying. She seemed to be- how would one describe it… consumed by her own words. I do believe, however, that the prophecy is true."
Lily and James waited for him to continue
Dumbledore took another breath, and recounted in an airy voice the following words:
"The one with the power to vanquish the dark lord approaches… born to those who have thrice defied him. Born as the seventh month dies… and the dark lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the dark lord knows not… and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives… the one with the power to vanquish the dark lord will be born as the seventh month dies…"
His voice returned to normal as he said "i'm sure you can understand why I am led to believe this prophecy could very well be about the two of you."
"But- but- what does all that mean? Born to those who have thrice defied him? We haven't even defied him once."
"On the contrary, you and James have defied him many times over. Simply joining the order is once, i'm sure. And who knows how he counts the counter-raids the two of you have been part of."
"But-but…" James could see Lily searching for something to grasp on to that would prove for sure that it wasn't them.
"As I see it, the order is home to all of those who are serious about defying voldemort. We have done it the most effectively, and the most frequently- if I don't say so myself. And, besides this, only two people in the order are having a child soon. You, and Alice. Both babies due at the end of July."
Lily and James both sat on their bed that night, Dumbledore long gone. Neither of them quite knew what to do or say. It was all a little far-fetched, wasn't it?
"That can't… that can't be real, can it?" Lily asked in a quiet voice
"I dunno, what part doesn't seem real?"
Lily sighed "well i really don't like the part where we have a son whose fate is to kill bloody fucking voldemort."
James gave a sad, half chuckle "neither one can live while the other survives," he quoted.
"Does that mean.."
"I don't know, Lil."
"I'm scared," she breathed shakily "I don't want our child to die."
